Recently, the New York courts granted the
petition to move the mortal remains of the
Venerable Servant of God Fulton Sheen
requested by his niece. Many have asked
about the need to have the body present for
his Beatification.
It is common practice to visit the graves of our
loved ones. People often make a visit to a
cemetery on Memorial Day, Veterans’ Day,
and especially on All Souls Day. It is also
common for people to visit the graves of their
relatives on the anniversary of their deaths.
This same tradition has been a longstanding
practice in the Church. Since the time of St.
Stephen, the proto-martyr, when his pious
followers took his body for burial (Acts 8:2), the
Church has honored the burial places of the
saints. They are places of pilgrimage that
Christians have visited especially on their feast
days.
When Beatifications are celebrated today, it is
customary to venerate a relic during the Mass
of Beatification and to make a pious visit to the
tomb shortly before or after. In some cases, if
there is no first class relic from the body to
venerate, a second class relic is presented from
the items the Blessed owned or wore. (For
example, no first class relic exists for St.
Maximillian Kolbe as his body was cremated
after his martyrdom.)
In the case of Fulton Sheen, we know where his
mortal remains are. It would be very much out
of the ordinary to celebrate a Beatification in
Peoria and not to have the opportunity to
venerate a first class relic or the place of burial,
around the same time. While not strictly
required, it is noble to satisfy the desire of the
faithful who come for the Beatification and who
also want to pray before his tomb.
Please pray for the success of the Cause of the
Venerable Servant of God. God willing, we will
receive good news about the progress of the
Cause in the near future.
-Msgr. Gray

Totus Tuus June 30—July 5 We have a Totus Tuus team coming to St. Thomas the week of June 30th.
Totus Tuus encourages young people to begin discerning God’s call in
their lives: to be married, a priest, a religious, or single. Totus Tuus
demonstrates that one can be a faithful, practicing Catholic and still
have fun. Grades 1-6 will participate during the day, and grades 7-12 will
meet in the evening. Registration materials are available on the tables in
the Narthex, as well as in the school and parish offices. Questions?
Contact Molly Legaspi or Maureen Bentley at 685-2533, or
Corpus Christi Sunday On Sunday, June 23, we celebrate the Body and Blood of Christ, and
honor our Lord in the Eucharist. To make the day special, we will add
some time for Eucharistic Adoration. At the end of 9:00 a.m. Mass, will
have a short procession, and then leave the Blessed Sacrament exposed
in the Church for about an hour. Benediction will take place a little
before 11:00 a.m. On this day, please take a little extra time after the 9
a.m. or before the 11 a.m. Mass to pray with Our Lord.
Have you downloaded the My Parish App yet?
It is a great way to stay connected with the
parish. Search for MyParish in your app store.
Download the app and select St. Thomas as
your parish. This will give you quick access to
the messages sent from the parish, calendar,
bulletin, daily Mass readings, prayers,
reflections, confession materials, and more.

hospitalized, please notify the hospital at the time of admission that you
are a member of St. Thomas Parish. You, or a family member, may also
contact the hospital Pastoral Care Office to have St. Thomas listed as your
