The Salem LIFE NEWSLETTER OF SALEM EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH SANDWICH, ILLINOIS June 15, 2015 VOL. 42, NO. 6 “…pray for one another...” – James 5:16b PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER Dear Friend, “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:7). I have three matters that I would like to share with you this month. The first matter is our need for a new roof on the education wing of the church building. You may be aware that we have had some leaks over the past several years. After a number of repair attempts, it is now obvious that we are very much in need of a new roof. I am sure that you know the importance of having a good roof. Our property committee has gotten four bids. When the work has been approved, we will need to raise funds to pay for this project. We hope (and need) to do this work this year. More information about this will come to you soon. The second matter is our prayer list. It will soon be divided into two parts: 1) people who are new to the prayer list, and 2) people who are in need of ongoing prayers. In our worship services sometimes we will be mentioning in prayer only the people new to the list and in other services we will be praying for everyone on the list. Please let someone in the church office know if you want someone added or deleted from the prayer list. Often in our worship services there is opportunity during the prayers to mention people’s names out loud or silently. Please feel free to do so. It is very important that we are praying for one another. The third matter concerns the E.L.C.A. “God’s work – Our hands” work day. This is a day that the E.L.C.A. encourages congregations to do a work project in the community. The official day always falls on the Sunday of the fair, but we are free to choose another day. Do you know of a work project that we could do this year? Painting, yard work, minor home repairs are some possibilities. Do you know of a needy person who could use some work done? Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas about any of these three matters. Thank you so much for all that you do for our congregation! Your Friend in Christ,

PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER

Dear Friend,

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 1:7).

Dear Salem Community,

Deep and dear thanks for all you did to help us with my mom’s memorial service. I also know over the years after she moved to Wisconsin you kept in touch. Thank you! Thank you Pastor Wayne for being willing to work with Pastor Sandy around the service. It was beautiful. You are a true servant. Gentle. And the women in the kitchen. There are no words!!! My mom knew so many of you if not all of you.

Thank you for work of hands and heart. I truly wish I could fill this card with all the love and thankfulness I have in my heart but it’s too little! Yet God is Big, Grace is Big and (I believe) we are all One. Thank you. Peace, Lou (Lou Ann Hjort Gallagher)

JUNE HIGHLIGHTS: The June 9th council meeting opened with devotions. Pastor Wayne gave his report. The minutes of the previous council meeting were approved.

For old business, the council: 1) discussed possibilities for the ELCA “God’s work. Our hands” work day, 2) approved Cintas doing repair work (as required by code) on our interior sprinkler system at a cost of $1,120; 3) discussed the possibility of additional lighting for the front of the church; 4) referred to the

finance committee the need for an additional check signer; and 5) discussed the need of a new roof on the education wing of the church building.

For new business, due to continued problems with Santanna Energy’s billing system, the council recommended to the property committee switching from Santanna Energy back to Nicor Gas.

Three thank you letters were read. The calendar and worship attendance were reviewed. Reports from committees were given.

The financial report was approved. For last month the General Fund had an offering income of $15,730 and expenses of $18,349 and the Capital Fund had an offering income of $5,582 and expenses of $6,191. The meeting was adjourned.

Getting to know your Congregation Council members…..

Throughout 2015 we will profile one of Salem’s Cong regation Council members in each issue of the Salem LIFE.

WALT FARLEY Walt Farley grew up in Ottawa Illinois. After graduating from North Central College in 1964, he and his bride, Michele (Mickey), came to Sandwich where Walt began his teaching career. They became Salem members shortly afterward. Walt’s professional career went from teaching junior high math to banking (28 years) and then back to teaching middle school until retirement. His passion since childhood has been running. He has shared that passion with many young people through years of coaching and mentoring. At Salem Walt has served a number of terms on the Congregation Council through the years. He has worked on nearly all of the standing committees at one time or another. His current responsibilities include the Worship Committee and the Mission Committee. He has also served on the Northern Illinois Synod Council and is currently a member of the Synod Stewardship Committee.

Walt and Mickey have been married for nearly 52 years. They are the parents of two children, both of whom were baptized, confirmed and married here at Salem. Now grandchildren are following that pattern. They feel blessed to share their love of Salem Lutheran Church with their family.

Featuring Salem’s Standing Committees…...

What do our committees do? Who is on the committee s? We will feature a different committee each month to help keep members informed about the various areas of congregational ministry.

WORSHIP COMMITTEE

The Worship Committee oversees the very important ministry of worship at Salem Lutheran Church. Eleven faithful committee members meet at 7:00 pm on the third Tuesday of each month (with occasional exceptions) to help plan Salem’s worship services and to provide support for Salem’s worship coordinators. These members are Sharon Adkins, Pastor Derber, Michele Farley, Walt Farley, Donna Fraley, Bob Harpster, Sandy Martens, Pam Pescitelli, Nancy Rex, John Sperry and Libby Welsch. Nancy Rex prepares agendas and facilitates meetings.

Responsibilities of committee members include the coordination of all worship personnel – musicians, ushers, readers, acolytes, worship leaders, communion servers, media technicians and altar committee. They review past worship services and recommend plans for future services including seasonal midweek services as well as the regular schedule of Sunday worship services. They work in cooperation with all of Salem’s other committees in “Serving Christ” at Salem Lutheran Church.

Anyone interested in being a part of the Worship Committee should speak to any of the above named committee members.

NORTHERN ILLINOIS SYNOD ASSEMBLY—Pastor Wayne, along with lay delegates Sharon Adkins and Walt Farley, will represent Salem at the Twenty-eighth Annual Assembly of the Northern Illinois Synod, ELCA on June 19-20 at Augustana College, Rock Island. Please keep them and the whole assembly in your prayers as they make important decisions about the work of the church. Reminder: they will be delivering our in-kind offering of personal care items. Anything you wish to add must be at Salem no later than Thursday, June 18.

FUNERAL LUNCH COORDINATOR

Salem’s Member Support Committee is still seeking a volunteer to serve as the coordinator for funeral luncheons. This is one of the most important services that the congregation offers to bereaved families. It is a great comfort to them to be able to gather at the church to share a meal and conversation following the death of a loved one. There is no guarantee as to how often these services would be needed, but during the past several years there has been an average of only two luncheons per year.

The responsibilities of a coordinator would be to: 1) serve as the contact person for the family; 2) order

food as necessary from local grocery stores; 3) call volunteers to help in the kitchen (usually 4-5 people); 4) call members to donate prepared dishes (usually 10-12); 5) arrange for set up of tables

and chairs; 6) be present at the church two hours before the time of the funeral to coordinate kitchen

and dining room tasks.

Be assured that the coordinator is just that. He/she would not have to DO all of the tasks—just make the arrangements. For instance, a calling committee could be arranged to help with calling. A responsible substitute could be asked to be present on the day of the luncheon. Please prayerfully consider this important ministry. Contact Laura Caupert (815-786-8955) or the church office to volunteer or to have questions answered.

COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP FEAST— The June feast is set for Tuesday, June 23, 4:30—6:00 pm at Somonauk Baptist Church. ALL ARE WELCOME. THERE IS NO COST. Salem is asked to provide vegetables. If you have signed-up to provide veggies, please deliver them to the host church around 4:00 pm on feast day.

The Green Team’s next road walk is scheduled for Saturday morning, June 27. We will meet at Prairie View School at 8:30 am. Walkers of ALL ages are welcome. Please wear sturdy shoes, long pants and work gloves. Safety vests and bags are provided.

WEDNESDAY MORNING FRIENDS is a monthly forum for believers from area churches and friends to learn about a topic of mutual interest. The group will meet on the first Wednesday of each month, 9:00-10:00 am at the Federated Church of Sandwich. There is no cost, and you do not have to sign up. Just come when the topic interests you. The program for July 1 is “ What Is a Refugee & What Can We Do About It?” by Rev. Steve Mindrup.

Our June date for volunteering at the Northern Illinois Food Bank in Geneva will be Tuesday, June 23, 9:00 am—12 noon. Volunteers will meet at Salem at 8:00 am to carpool. Please contact the church office ASAP if you plan to go and have not already signed-up. Please see Walt Farley if you have questions. The next opportunity will be Thursday, July 16.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NETWORK— Valley West Hospital has recently begun a new program that seeks to partner with churches and other organizations in our area. This program is called “Community Health Network.” This program offers non-medical help to our members after they have left the hospital or during other times of illness. It also offers educational programs on ways to stay healthy. More details will follow about this program. For now, we are in need of volunteers who would be willing to provide help to other Salem members after hospitalization. We are also in need of someone to coordinate this effort. Please see Pastor Wayne if you are interested or have any questions. GREETERS NEEDED—Can you smile, be friendly and welcoming on Sunday mornings? THEN WE NEED YOU! It’s time to reinstate greeters at the parking lot door for Sunday worship services. If you'd like to help, please sign up on the clipboard in the narthex. Then just come to church 15-20 minutes before your assigned service and be welcoming to folks as they arrive for church. It’s easy. It’s fun. Please volunteer.

LIKE TO SING? CONSIDER JOINING THE PRAISE TEAM. Salem’s Praise Team is inviting anyone who would like to join them to contact Connie Hanson (815-498-3666). The group practices on Monday evenings at 7:30 pm. MUSICAL TALENT WELCOME AT SUMMER WORSHIP SERVICES Any individuals or groups who would like to share their instrumental or vocal musical talents during summer worship services are encouraged to speak to either of our worship coordinators, Nancy Rex or Libby Welsch.

DON’T FORGET USED GYM SHOE COLLECTION THROUGH JUNE 30 - The DeKalb County Health Department is collecting gently used gym shoes for DeKalb County school children. Shoes will be furnished to school children of ALL AGES, so adult sizes for teenagers can be used as well as children’s sizes. Look for a collection box at the top of the parking lot stairway throughout the month of June.
