The day’s activities were led by James Realon, physical education teacher at Western Vance, and Randall Bullock, a volunteer. The third day of the week featured visits and tours at five industries and businesses in Vance County. The tours were of Duke Energy, Jerry's Artarama, Wal-Mart DC #6091, Carolina Country Snacks, & MARS Pet Care. The fourth day of the program involved information sessions, tours and activities at Vance-Granville Community College, as well as lunch at the Satterwhite Point Marina on Kerr Lake and visits to the Vance County 911 Center, the Vance County Courthouse and the Henderson Police Department. On their final day, students heard a special presentation about overcoming personal obstacles by Whitney Johnson, a Northern Vance graduate and U.S. Presidential Schloar. The Vance County School of Excellence was sponsored again this year by Walmart Distribution Center #6091, which awards a $1,500 grant to fund most of the costs of the program. The program is presented through a partnership by Vance-Granville Community College, the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce and Vance County Schools. A total of 20 rising sophomores in high school completed the 2015 Vance County Schoolof Excellence June 15-19. The participating students represented four high schools in VanceCounty.

Those students attendingfrom Northern Vance HighSchool were Jaylen Webb, ArahWells, Clara Bobbitt, AbrahamWright, Sarai Ross, MiayaOwens, Eric McAllister,Yasmin Walker.

Students participatingfrom Southern Vance HighSchool included AreliClemente, Ciara Gregory,Kimberly Rice, Mya Neal,Walter Hernandez, YareliAguilar, Adam Short,Brandon Loyd. 13 Graduate Leadership Vance 2015The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce has finished its 2015 Leadership Vance Program and will graduate 13 on July 23rd.

The graducation ceremony will take place at Henderson Country Club and will feature speakers from among the class as well as a slideshowwith pictures from all sessions of the six month program.

The Leadership Vance program is designed to inform,challenge and educate participants on the opportunities and needsof the community and to strengthen their leadership skills whileteaching about the social, economic, and political dynamics thatshape our community. The intensive training and exposure to allaspects of the community help provide participants with thehistorical background and the skills necessary for civic andcommunity positions. The program is ultimately designed tocreate a group of informed and dedicated leaders who willcontribute to the community.

Participants in this year’s class were: Kevin Bullock, 1450 AMWIZS Radio; Michelle Daniels, City of Henderson; LanishaDaye, Vance County Schools; Randy Gilmore, Century Link;Jermiel Hargrove, Vance-Granville Community College; ChristinaLyons, Maria Parham Medical Center; Patti McAnally, PerryMemorial Library; Jerry “Frankie” Nobles, Vance County AnimalControl; Ed O’Brien, Walmart DC #6091; Torreak Owens,Carolina Country Snacks; Lynn Thomas, Kerr Lake RegionalWater Plant; David Robinson, Vance County Planning &Development; and Travis Thompson, Maria Parham MedicalCenter.

Participants were exposed to various aspects of Henderson and Vance County, specifically in regard to city and county government, healthand community resources, economic development, agriculture and natural resources, history and media, and criminal justice and law.

The group is also required to participate in a community service project and this year’s class chose to do a beautification project oflandscaping and planting flowers at the new cancer wing of Maria Parham Medical Center. That work was done on July 7th.

Vanessa Jones Joins Chamber StaffVanessa Jones became the newest member of the Chamber staff on June 22 as Work First

Coordinator.Jones worked in the Vance County school system for five years before joining the Vance-Granville

Community College staff in 1988 as assistant coordinator and advisor at the college’s Warren CountyCampus. In 1996, she became a counselor at VGCC’s main campus. Jones also held leadershippositions as Dean of Student Development and Advancement Services, Vice President ofCommunity and Economic Development, and Dean of Academic and Career Pathways. She retired asDean of the Warren County Campus and Special Projects.

The Work First Coordinator works in conjunction with the Department of Social Services toconduct a monthly employability skills class entitled “Steps to Self Sufficiency” for eligible Work Firstclients. The class, held at the Franklin/Vance/Warren Annex Building, is also partnered with the VanceGranville Community College Human Resources Development Deptartment. Participants in the classare referred by DSS and are thoroughly trained for three consecutive weeks on goal setting, proper jobsearching techniques, interviewing skills, resume preparation, and more. Participants also take theNational Work Keys Certification Test through VGCC at no cost. In addition to class responsibilities,the coordinator meets with employers to discuss hiring needs and matches elegible clients withavailable jobs.

“Jones brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position and we are happy to have her.” said Chamber President John Barnes.When asked what her motivation was to get back to work, Jones said, “I want to serve in a role where I can be a help to others and give

back to the local community”. Please help the Chamber welcome Vanessa Jones to the Chamber family.

Charles Boyd Chevrolet-Cadillac-Buick-GMC, Inc. hosted a BusinessAfter Hours on May 7 from 5:30 to 9 pm to showcase their new showroomfacility and to provide a fellowship event for the community.

The event featured tours of the new showroom and service areas aswell as vendor tents from various businesses in the community. A varietyof foods and softdrinks were available in abundance and there weredrawings and giveaways throughout the evening. Ruin Creek AnimalProtection Society of Henderson volunteers manned a booth providinginformation about the organization and what it does and acceptingdonations.

The featured event of the eveing was a live concert by Jackie Gore, “theFather of Beach Music” and founding member of The Embers. Goreshared a collection of his Beach Music hits including “I Love Beach Music”.Members of several Shagg clubs were present and transformed theshowroom floor into a dance floor.

Boyd Hosts Business After Hours

Katie Bloom is a Universal Banker at Citizens Community Bank’s newest fullservice branch in Henderson. She has been in the banking industry for 5 yearsand was previously employed with Wachovia and Wells Fargo. She also ownsand operates her own photography business from home called CreativeConcepts Photography.

Bloom moved to North Carolina from Pennsylvania in 2000 to obtain her degreein Photojournalism from Randolph Community College in Asheboro, NC. Shehas lived in 6 different cities in North Carolina but has decided to makeHenderson her permanent home.

Katie has been involved in many community and chamber events includingribbon cuttings for new businesses, several Business After Hours events and asa volunteer at Meet Me in the Street. She has also volunteered her time to assistVance County Tourism with their annual car show event.

Bloom is excited to become an Ambassador for the Henderson-Vance Chamberof Commerce and looks forward to meeting everyone!
