PARISH MISSION STATEMENT We the people of St. Raphael Roman Catholic Church bring together diverse gifts and backgrounds to form a growing vibrant community centered in the Eucharist, the source and sign of our unity. In pilgrimage to the Kingdom of God,
our mission is to demonstrate God's presence and love through: worshipping together, spreading the Good News, serving others, and enjoying Christ-Centered activities. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we are committed to sharing our time,
our talents, and our treasures to fulfill God's will for our parish.
JULY 26, 2020 SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Reflections on today's Gospel
MATTHEW 13: 44 - 46 (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12; Psalm 119; Romans 8:28-30)
KEY VERSE: "The kingdom of heaven is like a net which was
thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind" (v. 47).
TO KNOW: Jesus taught his disciples about the mystery of God's reign by means of parables (Hebrew, mashal). As future leaders of the Church, Jesus' disciples must interpret these ancient truths in the light of the gospel, and proclaim the eternal reign of God. Sacrificing everything for the sake of the kingdom was central to Jesus' teaching in Matthew's gospel (Mt 6:33). The world attracted with its artificial "treasures" -- wealth, power and prestige, but these would eventually pass away. Jesus' disciples were to "store up treasure in heaven," that which was of inestimable value and would last for eternity (6:19-20). Wherever their "treasure" was, there also was their hearts (6:21). Jesus also compared God's work to a dragnet cast into the sea, which brought forth both the "worthwhile" and the "useless." Likewise, God's judgment would ultimately reveal what was good and evil in the world. TO LOVE: What do I most esteem as my treasure? TO SERVE: Lord Jesus, help me to discern between the world's lures and the values of your kingdom.

We are so glad you joined us! If you are new to our parish, we would like to invite you to become a member.

During this difficult time in our community, we have served many families that have never needed food pantry assistance before. Our pantry needs have continued to grow with more demand in specific areas. As you can
understand, there is a need for disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and surgical masks and gloves. We are also in need of all toiletry items and general household supplies.
As for the food supply, our most needed item is meat. If you are able to donate any quantities of fresh or frozen meat, direct from grocery store to Saint Raphael pantry, please call the church office to set an appointment so the food pantry will be able to transfer the meat immediately into freezer space. We ask that you do not bring meat from home freezers as this could potentially create a health risk. Thank you for your continued support. For appointment please call 479-756-6711.

Daily Readings
OUT OF THE PARISH FOR A FEW WEEKS: Sunday, July 26th in the afternoon —Tuesday, August 11th late night. As most of you know, my mother, who lives in Hot Springs, has been struggling with dementia for the last 4 years. She still lives at home. She receives the daily care that is needed and my sister who lives close by has been in charge of my mother’s healthcare. To give my sister and her husband a break from their routine, my brother Kevin and I have been filling in while they are on vacation. My brother & I are covering the time between July 13- August 10. I spent the first 5 days with my brother and mom this past week and will be headed back to Hot Springs on Sunday, July 26th after my Masses. I will be there two weeks. Part of that time I will be with my brother and will occupy our time by working around the house on things that need repair, cleaning or simply to be thrown way. The last 8 days, I will be with my mom by myself. This is an opportunity to spend some time with her and to take care of her as she took care of me over 60 years ago.
After finishing my time with my mom, I will attend the Chrism Mass in Little Rock on the 10th (postponed from April 5th) and then the Diaconate ordination of Alex Smith in Jacksonville on the 11th. Fr Ramos, Fr Jon and I will also attend the priestly ordination of two new diocesan priests on Saturday, August 15th in Little Rock. I will be back in the office on Monday, August 17th. It is also my hope that we can resume a limited daily Mass schedule by then as well. Even though I will be out of town for a good part of 3 weeks, I will be able to respond to emails, texts, and phone calls.
OFFICE APPOINTMENTS: It has come to my attention that many of you believe I do not take appointments, that I am unapproachable, or I am too busy to meet with my parishioners. I assure you; nothing is further than the truth. I do have one exception: Marriage counsel-ing, because long ago I learned as a young priest that is not my area of expertise. I do take appointments especially with parishioners who have concerns or questions. If you desire an appointment, call the office, and speak to Lizzette Castrellon at St Raphael or Paul Scouten
at St Joseph. Living in these days of pandemic, it may be via Facetime or Zoom, but you can make an appointment me. You can always email as well at [email protected] with your concern or questions and I promise I will respond.

Gospel Reflection from Alex Smith —Our Summer Seminarian
Sharing Christ’s Story Recently, I watched the play: Hamilton. However, it is a pseudo-fictional depiction of one of the American Founding Fathers-Alexander Hamilton. I recommend it to you all! One character that stands out to me in the play is Eliza Hamilton Holly, Hamilton’s wife. Even after Hamilton’s death (sorry if that is a spoiler), Eliza stills sees the need to live out the dream of being a servant leader to her country. She cares to tell the story of the life and mission of her husband. Sharing the legacy or the story of someone is essential. In this past Wednesday’s Gospel Jn 20:1-2,11-18, Jesus tells Mary Magdalene to share His life and mission.
From the time of her deliverance, Mary Magdalene followed our Lord. She went where He went. She listened, learned, and believed in Jesus. Mary, through God’s grace, desired nothing else but to serve her Lord, who had saved her life. The scriptures tell us that she and the other women that followed the Lord supported Him and the disciples out of their means. The resurrection of Jesus changed Mary Magdalene forever. All the fear that she had was washed away in a flood of joy. Everything that Jesus said was true. Mary’s hope was restored. Her Lord was Lord, and death was dead. Jesus had come to save the world by sharing in its curse. By taking the curse of death upon Himself, Jesus took it away from her and from the world. The curse of death could not contain the Lord of Life. Jesus tells Mary to go to His disciples. Mary could not help herself; she ran to the disciples. She had good news. Jesus was alive! They had not been deserted. Jesus was with them and always would be as He had promised. With the eyes of faith, we believe that Jesus was raised from the dead for our justification, proclaiming our innocence before God. We share in Mary’s joy and hope in a Savior that will never leave us nor forsake us. In Jesus, we have the promise of eternal life. Mary Magdalene is a great model for all of us, whether we are female or male. Today may we ask Mary Magdalene to help us develop a sincere and loving relationship with Jesus. Today may we ask Mary to show us the way! Let us share His story to the world; He has risen!
Alex’s last weekend here with us will be August 1st & 2nd. His Ordination to Transitional Deacon will be August 11th. Please keep Alex in your prayers as he completes his last year of study at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio, Texas.

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana.
Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.
For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.
In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.
We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

5 Ways to Be Kind to Your Community Be a good neighbor. Check in with your neighbors to make sure they have what they need and to let them know they have people that care. Be especially aware of elderly neighbors and people that live alone. You know all that technology we have - let’s use it like never before to truly connect.
Support local businesses. Order takeout or buy gift cards for later use. Send a Facebook message to remind them that very soon, we will all be back out and about again to visit their business. Keep your memberships going. Continue to give to your church and area non-profits and give more if you can.
Remember the caretakers. Find a way to say thank you to health professionals and first responders. Post words of encouragement on their social media channels. If you have to go to the doctor’s office or hospital, practice grace and understanding if they are short on time, resources, or answers.
Be generous. Don’t take more than you need when it comes to groceries and supplies. Or if you do buy extra, drop them off at police stations, fire stations, and emergency rooms. If you eat out, leave a bigger tip than usual.
Help people. From hungry kids that are missing school lunch to people in demand-shifted jobs like restaurant workers and event custodians, there will be people all over our communities that will be struggling. If you know them, think of what help could look like and reach out. If no one comes to mind, give to your local United Way or food bank; the needs these organizations will be addressing will be fierce. https://inspirekindness.com/blog/practicing-kindness-during-the-

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy
Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You
into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into
my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me
to be separated from You. —Amen.

and I know I shall not be disappointed. —Diary, 317
