President’s Report – July 2019

Hi Everyone,

As Braidy is away overseas enjoying the warm weather, I am trying to keep warm. The mornings,

in my neck of the woods, have been particularly cold with us not seeing a morning above 0 deg

and a couple at -5 deg for over a week now. Enjoy the warm weather Braidy!

This month we have a special feature at the club meeting. We are having the Collector’s Corner

again but this time it is open for all you collectors out there. Please bring along some items that

you collect (they don’t have to be Morry related) as well as a brief talk to give your fellow

members on your other passion. I hope to see some weird and interesting items on the night.

On the 21st of July we are having our Mid-Year Lunch at Donegan’s Farm in Gordon. It will be

great to see other clubs and their cars as we enjoy a very yummy lunch. Further details are in

the Generator.

The August meeting will be a feast for all as the club is supplying pizza for everyone before the

meeting. Turn up a 7pm for dinner, then enjoy the general meeting followed by a light supper.

Hope to see you out and about at one of the many events that are coming up.

Keep on Morrying,

Stewart Carr – VP MMCCV.

Vale Jeremy Kyd Rodseth.

16th February 1937 – 2nd June 2019

Jeremy was a member of the Morris Minor Car Club of Victoria for

thirteen years. Although he very rarely came to a Club meeting, he

attended many runs with either his wife Maeve or his grandson

Daryl and of course his English Grey and Red Morris Minor

sedans.

Born in Kenya, Jeremy, emigrated to Australia in 1976 with Maeve

and their two children. The family settled in Frankston.

Jeremy always had a passion for cars, not surprising given his

training as a mechanical engineer. Over the years he restored

many cars and was a keen motor racing driver building his own

racing and rally cars.

As a member of the Mornington Men’s Shed, Jeremy was part of

the group rebuilding a Morris Minor, his experience in restoring

Morries of great value. His donations of car parts were greatly

appreciated.

Caravanning, or “going on Safari” as Jeremy put it, was also a

great interest. Most years, Jeremy and Maeve would set off for a

three-month Safari to Central Australia, North Queensland and

many other places. During these trips he would indulge another of

his passions – photography, especially of birds and other flora and

fauna.

Those of us that knew Jeremy well, remember him as a friendly

person, always smiling and someone who didn’t hesitate to help

others.

Our thoughts go out to Maeve and his family.

Club Captain’s Report – July 2019 Hi everyone,

Since my last report, Jeremy Rodseth, who many of you would have known, lost his brave battle

with brain cancer. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge Jeremy’s involvement

and participation in the Club’s activities, particularly during the last three years whilst

recuperating from major surgery. Many of us were both surprised and gladdened by his

attendance at the runs to the Clarkefield Pub and Dixon’s Creek as well as the Club’s Australia

Day BBQ at Westerfolds Park, all requiring long drives. Jeremy will be greatly missed by all who

knew him.

For those who are still considering the possibility of attending the mid-year lunch at Gordon on

Sunday 21st July, late bookings and payment of $30 per head are currently being accepted by

our new Treasurer Katie for the lunch which has been organized by Wayne Cunningham.

For further information please ring Wayne on 0407 994 642.

Payment by next meeting (11th July) please and if paying by electronic funds transfer please

include, in the reference box, ‘July lunch’ and your membership number.

On Sunday 25th August there will be a run to the RACV Aussie Classic Car Show at the Yarra

Glen Racecourse, and a volunteer is still required to organize the run.

Please ring me on 0400273328 if you can assist.

Bye for now and I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting on Thursday 11 July.

Cheers to All,

Michael Dobson (Club Captain) July 2019

Run Report –– July 2019

The MMCCV goes ‘THROUGH THE DECADES’

with the Hamilton and District Veteran, Vintage and Classic Driver’s Club

Queen’s Birthday Rally – 7th to 10th June 2019

9 intrepid travellers in 4 cars (Trish and Rob, Lesley and Graham, Ann and John, Gladys, Rhonda and

Jeff met at the BP Rockbank on the Western Freeway on the Friday morning and after fuel, food and

coffee headed off towards Ballarat with Trish and Rob leading the way.

We all arrived at the “Amazing Mill Markets” at Ballarat where we met up

with another 3 Morries containing Brenda and Bob, Cheryl and Percy and

Lyn and Wayne. We decided to stay there for lunch at Mai’s Kitchen Rules

Café instead of going to the Beechworth Bakery as originally planned

which turned out to be a great decision.

After lunch and a wander through the markets, we followed Lyn and

Wayne through Ballarat and headed out towards Hamilton. The group

split up with some going different ways, but we all ended up arriving,

around the same time at our abode for the next few days, the Top Holiday

Park The park was great with all members having cabins which were very

warm and comfortable.

We settled in and then headed off to the rally headquarters which was at

the Hamilton Exhibition and Conference Centre (HECC) at the Hamilton

showgrounds. Rally registration was between 5pm and 7pm so we all

signed in and collected our bags containing info about the weekend and

the surrounds then we all departed for dinner at the Grand Central Hotel.

Everyone was tired and so we decided to

head off to bed as we had two full days of fun ahead of us.

We had to be back at the HECC at about 9am on the Saturday so many

were up early drying their cars with their Chamois as we had a heavy

covering of dew on the cars as well as road grime from the drive there.

When we arrived at HQ, our cars were all put into categories based on the decade of manufacture. The

earliest being a 1915 Ford T Model. There were Fords, Chryslers, Hudsons, Rovers, Morrises, Dodges,

Aston Martins, Pontiacs, Sunbeams, Austins, Holdens, Mercedes Benz,

Rolls Royces, Jaguar’s, Commers, Triumphs, Oldsmobiles, MGs,

Hillmans, Plymouths, Toyotas, Buicks, BMWs, Humbers, Isuzus, Volvos,

Citroens, Vauxhalls, Rileys, Rugbys,

Minis, Jowetts, Auburns, Chenard-

Walckers, Porsches, Subarus and

Wolseleys. There were about 30 clubs or

groups attending with about 128 entries.

Once all the cars were in place and on display, attendees, as well as the

public, moved around to admire the collection. This went on between

10am and 12 noon.

Page 14: July 2019 Volume 44 Number 07 - morrisminorvic.org.au

Another member, Jeff Peck, joined us with his Green Traveller. The traveller is currently for sale so, if

anyone is interested, please contact Jeff on 0409 970 654.

Lunch was provided and then, after we had eaten, we all took to our cars

and headed off on a run to the Clyde engineering works and the Deutscher

Son and Walker Traction Engine Museum which contained many working

traction and stationary engines followed by a visit to a farm where we saw

a collection of very old Ford tractors (one was 108 year old) we then

climbed to the top of the hill behind the property for some fantastic

panoramic views of the area which was just spectacular. The property was located on Mt Pierrepoint

which was a 1,000,000-year-old volcano. From the top, we overlooked Mt Napier which dominated the

skyline.

We returned to our cabins from here and prepared to go back to the

HECC at 5.30pm for Happy Hour. This was followed by a 2-course meal.

We had a guest speaker on the night. Her name was Pam and she really

knew how to entertain the crowd. She kept sticking a microphone under

the noses of some of the visitors and asking them about 'the first car they

owned' and got some strange replies

.

It was off to bed again to get ready for another fun-filled day.

After breakfast on the Sunday, it was back to rally HQ to collect our

instructions for the day and to head off for

a 141km run around the Melville Forest

area through the stunning redgum and

grazing country. It was a fantastic sight to

see all the wonderful machines rolling up

the road.

We went out to the Wannon River Bridge and then off the main 'track' into

the beautiful grazing country of Tarrenlea and the Wannon River Valleys, up to Coleraine and on to the

Melville Forest area with its beautiful Red Gums.

We first visited the Motorcycle collection of their Club Member’s, David & Joan Lewis which was a great

collection of motorbikes mainly BSA’s with a Velocette and a Royal Enfield. There was also a powered

hang glider sitting there too.

We then went “over the road' to the ancient Woolshed of the 'Old Melville

Forest Homestead' where Andrew Dufty gave a talk about the property

and the unique features of the old building. It was a very old shearing shed

which still has its original wooden shingles beneath a modern iron roof.

This property is part of an early sub-division of the great “Koonung

Wootong” run which originally ran from near Coleraine up to the Dundas

Mountain Range. The complex consists of a timber home which was built after 1858, a huge woolshed,

stables, Chinese Gardeners Room as well as additional sheds.

It was nearly lunchtime when we arrived at the Melville Forest Hall so we parked all the cars where we

could and went inside to collect our picnic lunches and a cuppa. As you could well imagine, the hall was

packed so we went outside and set our chairs up amongst the cars for a very relaxed break. Up to now,

the weather had been fine but there were some very ominous clouds

looming from the South direction.

After lunch it was back in the cars to drive to the Gringegalgona

Homestead owned by the

Gaussen Family.

Page 15: July 2019 Volume 44 Number 07 - morrisminorvic.org.au

The property was originally settled by a Simon Cadden in 1843. It was sold and Gringegalgona

homestead was built for Duncan Robertson, a successful Western District pastoralist who acquired the

Gringegalgona pastoral run with about 40,000 acres in c1861. The house was built to replace the original

homestead, the archaeological remains of which survive in the grounds.

It was the grand centrepiece of a squatting run, which even by the early

twentieth century still comprised 28,000 acres of open woodland country

watered by dams, tanks and waterholes, and was stocked with 25,000

merino sheep. The grounds today comprise a small fraction of this area.

The house is a two-storey mansion built of

sandstone quarried locally from the Dundas Range. It is the only large

house known to have been built using this stone. It was begun in 1873

and the design has been attributed to a South Australian architect, WT

Gore. The house is a vigorously formal expression of the Italianate style.

It is raised up on a terrace and visually dominates the site. The formality

of the house is one part of the overall axial

design for the landscape and garden.

Behind the house, the stables are also arranged along the same axis.

The overall park of Gringegalgona homestead is bounded by a circular

fence and partly by mature conifer plantings that act as a backdrop to the

house. The curving drive terminates in front of the house as a turning

circle comprising of three circular beds.

The house is on an axis with Mount Melville in the Dundas Range, visible

in the distance. The original owner is buried close to the house.

The current owners gave the crowd a talk on the history of the house before letting us in to wander around

the ground floor. It was a wonderful experience seeing such a significant

part of Victoria’s history that has been faithfully restored and maintained.

The threatening rainclouds arrived in earnest and it started to drizzle but

the timing was perfect as the tour had ended and we headed back to the

cabins via the Nigretta area to get ready

for the presentation dinner where some of

the group dressed in the fashion of the day

dictated by the Decade of their Car.

We arrived in time for predinner drinks then sat down to a three-course

meal provided by our hosts. During the evening, a DJ provided music, a

raffle was run, presentations for each decade were made and a good time was had by all.

On Monday, 120 people showed up at the club rooms for egg and bacon

rolls, fruit, cakes and biscuits, tea and coffee and then after saying our

goodbyes to the Hamilton and District Veteran, Vintage and Classic

Driver’s Club members, we all headed off in the direction of our homes.

Thanks to all the efforts of the club members of the Hamilton and District

Veteran, Vintage and Classic Driver’s Club who helped over the weekend.

This was greatly appreciated by all the visitors.

Regards,

Graham and Lesley Dines – June 2019
