We hope everyone who participated in our Member/Guest “Margarittaville” event last Monday evening and Tuesday had as much fun as we did! We had perfect weather both days, and sharing our club with friends made it even better! The Ukulele band on Monday night really got everyone moving! We gave away great prizes and awards, and had a fine time drinking those special margaritas!

Many thanks to our chairperson Vickie Smith and her committee who did a outstanding job: Kimberly Griffith, Kim Ladd, Laura Veesart, Angie Martin, Barbara Greebon and Karen Robertson. Also, we could not have had the success we did without the support of our awesome Pro shop with Brent leading the way, and Andrew and Jeff Cox arranging our skills challenge and our Limbo Golf hole! Thanks to Steven Ash for our two nights of dining excellence.

Congratulations to Monday night’s Par 3 contest Diane Rosloniec and guest Sally Andrews. On Tuesday, our champions were member Jenna Calovini and guest Mary Virginia Horne. ~ WLGA

U.S. Kids Equipment Andrew Argotsinger, PGA First Assistant

Summer is here and the kids are out of school. They are begging you to take them to the pool, to the tennis courts, and of course to the golf course! If they have not gotten the bug yet then they will when you get them their new custom fit golf clubs. You have a custom fit set of clubs, why shouldn’t they? U.S. Kids has come out with a brilliant fitting system based on height and swing speed that ranges in 9 sizes and 2 speed cat-egories. We are an authorized U.S. Kids dealer and there is no better place to get your children’s golf game started than at Windyke. Studies have proven that many golf swings are ruined or stunted at an early age because children use equipment that is improperly sized for them. If you are looking to get them going and need help finding the best first or second set for them then swing by the pro shop and put them up against our Fit Stick to find out where to start. I will be happy to guide you from there on what we can do to develop the next golfer in the family.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2019 John Romeo, BOARD PRESIDENT

The 2019 Windyke Member-Guest has come and gone, but what a tournament it was! The Member-Guest is the premier event at Windyke each year and is a great way to introduce so many guests to the great things that Windyke has to offer. 54 teams in nine flights competed in a match-play format over two days. There was great competition, terrific food, and just a lot of fun had by all. In many ways, this may have been the best Member-Guest ever! The Member-Guest tournament is organized by the Windyke Board of Directors, working in conjunc-tion with Greg, Brent and the Golf Shop staff. A great job was done by all, but I’d like to single out this year’s Tournament Chairman, Tim Lohn, for his hard work and great contribution. Thanks Tim! And a big thank you to all of the wonderful sponsors who really help to make this tournament happen. If you haven’t played in the Mem-ber-Guest yet or recently, start thinking about putting it on your calendar for you and a friend in June of 2020.

STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP & CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER FOR CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHTSaturday Tee Times Begin at 11:00 • Sunday Tee Times Begin at 9:00

This year we are again combining these two events for your convenience. To help with everyone’s busy schedule and to make the Stroke Play a two day event we have moved it to August 10 and 11. It also serves as the qualifier for the Club Championship Championship Flight. The top 15 players, along with last year’s champion Nick Giles, will be seeded into the championship flight This event will be pre-flighted based on handicap and will cost $100 including cart for both days. The cost to play in the qualifier as well is $50 and that entry also covers the entry fee for the Club Cham-pionship August 17 and 18 even if you do not qualify for the championship flight. Call the golf shop today for more information, (901)755-3160.

MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPThis is golf at its finest. For those purists, this is golf the old fashion way: match play. All players electing not to play in the qualifier or missing in their qualifying attempt will be pre-flighted based on their USGA indices. This is golf for all ability levels. Matches will be played on August 17 and 18. The 1st and 2nd round will be on the WEST course. Flights, pairings and tee times for the event will be posted on Friday, August 16 at 5:00 p.m. The 3rd and 4th rounds will be on the EAST Course. Entry fee is $50 plus carts.

Note: This year the entire event will again be played on one weekend. We hope that this will allow more players to com-mit to playing by having more certainty of the time required to complete the entire event.

**Handicap indexes will be based on the August 15th revision*****SIGN UP MUST BE DONE IN PERSON IN THE GOLF SHOP***

LADIES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPClub championship schedule would not be complete without our Ladies Club Championship. This year’s event will be held on August 17 and August 18. As always this is a Gross and Net division golf tournament each and every lady should play. This is your event so we need your participation to make it a success. If you are not a member of the hole in one club or you don’t know about the hole in one club, then the next time that you are out ask the golf shop staff for help in signing up.

I have a few thoughts from the US Open last month. • Success is the product of a long period of faithfulness to a task. Gary Woodland is 35 years old and has been on tour for 12 years. He has won 3 times, but nothing of this magnitude. How did he do it? He was faithful to the task for a number of years. Some may argue that Tiger Woods never had to wait for success, but if you knew his training regimen as a youth, you might say it was about time when he won his first Masters at 21. You may say the same about Brooks Koepka, but he spent years in Europe on developmental tours before making a grand en-trance on the PGA tour recently with four major wins in 3 years. Koepka is 29 years old and had to spend a lot of time developing. Woodland used his most recent experience of playing in the final group on Sunday with Koepka at last year’s PGA Championship. That experience, though a losing one, is what gave him the preparation and confi-dence to win this time around. • Victory is an ‘all in’ attitude. On the 14th hole on Sunday at Pebble Beach, Woodland hit a perfect drive on the par 5. Unfortunately, he was left with a difficult decision. The green is up a heavy hill and guarded by a huge bun-ker in front. The pin was perched just 15 feet past the lip. Was there really any advantage in going for the green? Sometimes the answer is ‘no’ and patience is required in that situation, leading to a lay up. But, in Woodland’s case, going for it was the right call. Though hesitant, he was encouraged by his caddie to let it fly with a 3 wood. It led to an easy birdie. This was the right call because Woodland had just bogied 2 of the last 4 holes and needed to prove that he was there to win and not just to hold on for dear life. You have to be willing to risk it all at the right time and Woodland was ready to do just that. • Focus on your weaknesses. Finally, Woodland has always been one of the longest and best ball strikers on tour. Unfortunately, his short game came in ranked 150th. Woodland knew that wasn’t good enough to do anything special. He worked for years with a few coaches on the short game. Years ago, one of those coaches, Randy Smith, had Woodland working on hitting pitch shots off the green surface to improve his use of bounce and crispness of strike. The week of the Open, his current coach, Pete Cowen, had him working on that very same thing prior to the tournament. That set the stage for his incredible pitch off the green surface at #17 on Sunday. Though likely to blade the shot and lose the tournament, Woodland was prepared for it and decided against the safer putt. He nearly holed it, even getting a complementary fist bump from his opponent, Justin Rose. It was reminiscent of Watson’s hole out there, and both went on to pour in another long birdie at #18 as icing on the cake. Practice your weakness and relish the moments when it can win you a match instead of relying on your strength every time.

When it comes to taking private lessons, some kids and adults can find it awkward or uncomfortable in a one-on- one experience. This usually happens because people tend to be embarrassed of their skill level as beginners, or feel like they are being judged by the instructor. A great way to deal with this issue is through group lessons! Having a group of 3-4 students participating in a small clinic type environment is a great way for people to enjoy the golf learning experience in a fun and more laidback setting. A single lesson here at Windyke costs $75, but when doing group lessons, each additional participant is only $20 instead of the $75 rate! This is a cost-effective way for friends to learn golf together or for Mom, Dad, Grandma or Grandpa to take lessons together with their kids/grandkids at a lower cost!

Call the Golf Shop today to learn more about the advantages of group instruction and how it can improve your golf game and learn-ing experience! (901)755-3160.

Competitive Golf Brent Ratliff As you have noticed all of the club’s Championships are coming up. It is your chance to see how you stack up against your peers in fun and exciting formats. Here at Windyke we pride ourselves as having some of the very best amateur golf-ers in the city and here is your chance to become crowned as the best of the best in several different events. No matter you age or ability level we have events for you. If you have never or rarely played in your clubs championships then I challenge you to get out of your comfort zone and participate this year. Not only will you have fun during the events but it will give you purpose for all of that practice you have been doing or motivate you to practice a little more. To assist you in getting over the competitive jitters we will be having events during our upcoming Men’s Nights that will prep you for all of the situations that you will encounter in these competitive events. This is probably the most fun and interest-ing event during the Men’s Night season each year. So even if you have not played in one event all year make sure that you play in this one. So get off the sidelines and get in on the action. I promise that you will have fun and who knows you just might get better in the process.

Supervised Practice ProgramAs a golfer, I understand how tricky it can be to try and make significant changes to my game/swing during the time of year when we are playing the most! This is why I decided to implement a Supervised Practice program for our players looking to improve their game without making major changes.

The Goal: to create a structured and interesting way to practice and not only develop technique, but also test and improve golf skills.

Supervised Practice is a great way to work on the parts of the game that can help you play more consis-tently. Some of the ways we can use Supervised Practice are… Alignment, Posture at Set-Up, Pre-shot Routine, Post-shot Routine, Club Selection, Wedge Game, Green Reading, Speed Control (Putting) and Situational Practice.

These programs will run on a 4 week cycle on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 pm. For just $99 you will have 4 hours of DELIBERATE practice time where we can start to make the necessary tweaks to improve your game!

Call the Golf Shop at (901)755.3160 or send an email to [email protected] to learn more!
