Seven tips to help your landscapebeat the heat this summerby gardening expert, TV/radio host, author & columnist Melinda Myers

Summer has arrived and formany gardeners that means heat, drought and watering bans. Thiscan be hard on gardeners as wellas their landscapes. The goodnews is that there are ways to helpplants thrive despite these sea-sonal challenges. Adjusting land-scape care accordingly during thesummer months can not only pro-vide relief for lawns and gardens, but also for the gardener. Here aresome low maintenance eco-friendlyways gardeners can keep theirlandscapes looking their bestthroughout the summer months, while beating the heat:

Water plants thoroughly topromote deep drought- and pest-resistant roots. Wait until the topfew inches of soil are crumbly andmoist or footprints remain in thelawn before watering again.

Avoid light, frequent wateringthat encourages shallow roots. Shallow roots are less able to tol-erate drought and more susceptibleto disease and insect problems.Spread a 2- to 3-inch layer of shred-ded leaves, evergreen needles orshredded bark mulch over the soilin garden beds and around treesand shrubs. Mulching conserves

moisture, keeps roots cool andmoist, and suppresses weeds.

Mow lawns high. Taller grassproduces deeper roots that aremore drought-tolerant. A deeplyrooted lawn is also more resistantto insects, disease and other envi-ronmental stresses.

Always mow lawns oftenenough, so you remove less thanone third the total leaf surface. Leave the grass clippings on thelawn. They add nitrogen, organicmatter and moisture to the soil.Use a low nitrogen slow releasefertilizer, like Milorganite, to givegardens and lawns a nutrientboost. This organic nitrogen fertil-izer remains in the soil until thegrowing conditions are right for theplant.

Remove weeds from gardenbeds and borders as soon as theyappear. These “plants out ofplace” steal water and nutrientsfrom your desirable garden plants. Plus, they can harbor insects anddiseases that are harmful to yourgarden plants.

And don’t forget to take care ofyourself while caring for your land-scape during the heat of summer.Drink lots of liquid, use sunscreen, and work during the cooler morn-ing and evening hours.

Becausehome canning recommendations havechanged over the years, only up-to-date editions should be used.
