Boardman, Oregon – On April 28from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the BoardmanPolice Department and the DrugEnforcement Administration (DEA)will give the public another oppor-tunity to prevent pill abuse andtheft by ridding their homes of po-tentially dangerous expired, un-used, and unwanted prescriptiondrugs. Bring your medications fordisposal to the Boardman PoliceDepartment at 200 City CenterCircle in Boardman. The service isfree and anonymous, no questionsasked. Chief Stokoe encourageseveryone to take advantage of thisservice.

Last October, Americans turnedin 377,080 pounds—188.5 tons—of prescription drugs at over 5,300sites operated by the DEA andnearly 4,000 state and local lawenforcement partners. In its threeprevious Take Back events, DEA

Boardman Police Department takingback unwanted prescription drugs

and its partners took in almost amillion pounds—nearly 500 tons—of pills.

This initiative addresses a vitalpublic safety and public health is-sue. Medicines that languish inhome cabinets are highly suscep-tible to diversion, misuse, andabuse. Rates of prescription drugabuse in the U.S. are alarminglyhigh, as are the number of acciden-tal poisonings and overdoses dueto these drugs. Studies show thata majority of abused prescriptiondrugs are obtained from family andfriends, including from the homemedicine cabinet. In addition,Americans are now advised thattheir usual methods for disposingof unused medicines—flushingthem down the toilet or throwingthem in the trash—both pose po-tential safety and health hazards.

Four days after the first event, Con-gress passed the Secure and Re-sponsible Drug Disposal Act of2010, which amends the ControlledSubstances Act to allow an “ulti-mate user” of controlled substancemedications to dispose of them bydelivering them to entities autho-rized by the Attorney General toaccept them. The Act also allowsthe Attorney General to authorizelong term care facilities to disposeof their residents’ controlled sub-stances in certain instances. DEAis drafting regulations to imple-ment the Act, a process that cantake as long as 24 months. Untilnew regulations are in place, locallaw enforcement agencies like[agency] and the DEA will con-tinue to hold prescription drugtake-back events every fewmonths.

This year we have startedthe Food Backpack Program atIrrigon Elementary School. Thepurpose of this program is toprovide students in need with foodover the weekend.

The way the programworks is a backpack of food issent home for the weekend. Manyof our students rely on the mealsthat they are provided at school. Itis common on non-school days forsome students to go without food. Our hope is to provide them withthe proper nourishment for theweekends. Research shows thatstudents who are properlynourished perform better in schoolas well as life.

Through a grant our schoolis provided with 11 weeklybackpacks. We have receivedrequest from more than 33 familiesin need with more request comingin daily. We would like to send abackpack to every family in needeach week. The students lookforward to their backpacks eachweek.

Our goal is to raise atleast $1,000 this year. If you coulddonate food items or make amonetary donation to be used topurchase items to support theprogram, we will include yourname in acknowledgment of thesupport in the Backpack Program.
