Board staff met with Director andProfessor Marla Erbin-Roeseman and DeanRuth Welborn, along with several facultymembers and toured the building,including classrooms, skills and simulationlabs, faculty office suites, and supportservices areas. The building is extremelywell-appointed and equipped. The program has admitted their firststudent cohort of 100 students, withapproximately 60% having completedprerequisites at educational institutionsother than Texas State University.Students range in age from 20-58, withan average age of 23. Many are second-degree students and come from diverseethnic and racial backgrounds. Theprogram anticipates a stable enrollmentwith approximately 100 graduates eachyear and is making plans for graduateeducation, including an ADN to MSN

Thegroups accepted the current versions ofthe Differentiated Essential Competencies(DECs), discussed the process ofobtaining feedback from clinical affiliates,and discussed the process fordissemination of the DECs to allstakeholders for approval. As an update on the regional forums, Dr.Mary Beth Thomas and Dr. Paul Wallertraveled throughout the state in May,June, and July in order to present theDECs and to gather feedback fromstakeholders. Dr. John Lehman, Ph.D.,gave a presentation regarding physical andpsychological evaluations, includinginformation regarding the appropriatefocus of an evaluation; the value oflimiting certain types of evaluators tocertain evaluations; the importance ofspecifying the minimum standards forobjective testing; the components of agood evaluation; the limitations of riskassessment; and the role of an evaluatorin hearings. Dr. Lehman specializes inindividual assessment and lecturesnationally on psychological assessment fordetermining fitness to perform jobfunctions.
