Preface

There are persons who hate astrolory and have no faith init. There is no apprehension from such persons. They are inthe open field and can be dealt with. The greatest apprehen'sion is from those who love astrolory and have great faith inits predictions. The reason is that they make too heavy de-mands on it to be easily satisfied. Longevity of human being isone such subject. They will not be satisfied if they are merelytold that the particular person has a deerghaJru or a long life. They want to have the answer in quantitative terms, pre-

cisely, in years, months and days etc. I am also one suchadmirer. Being a serious student as well I worked on thesubject. The net result of my labours is presented to thereaders.

As an admirer of the science and its student I have alwaysbeen interested in taking it to as many per€on as possible. Ihave been for the purpose teaching this science under theauspices of Delhi Chapter of Astro Scienes Research Instituteof India. As for writing a book on a subject like longevitywhich is both difficult and vast I have to admit that the divinegrace of Gurudeva H. H. Swami Madhawanandji Maharajinspired me for it and the Invisible Hand of Lord Hanumandid the job. I bow my head in reverence to the lotus feet ofGurudeva and dedicate myself to the service of the Lord.

My sincere and unsolicited thanks go to Ranjan Publica'tions who readily agreed to publish my work under their sealand cover.

I am also indebted to Sh. S. C. Chaudhri who helped me ina second reading with a view to edit it.

Introduction

Determination of longevity of human beinp in exact andprecise terms of years, months and days etc., is a diffrcult task.It is transgressing the Providential domain. As we are imper-fect human beinp our methods can claim perfection, if at allthey do, only to a certain extent and nothing beyond that. Themasters had their way and the best way to reach some of theirheights is to follow their foot prints.

The sages tackled this question very competently and wehave no better alternative but to follow them most scrupu-lously. They based all their conclusions on a comprehensivestudy of the birth chart- To arrive at correct conclusions, therefore; the first important thing is to judge the reliability ofthe time of birth upon which the whole edifice of the chart hasbeen prepared. As it is not the purpose to show how therectification of the error in time oi'birth is made, we haverestricted ourselves only to check up the conectness of thetime of birth and not to indulge in its correction. The firstchapter deals very briefly with this subject. Three methodshave been explained here very briefly. The first is the easiestmethod in the light of Ruling Planets advocated by very emi-nent astrologer of our days, K. S. Krishnamurti. The second isthat of counting the constellations and checking up the posi-tion of Moon. There is yet another method by which we checkthe sex of the new c\omer and if it is the same as it should bethe time of birth gets confirmed.

It may be mentioned here very clearly that our sagesmeant by life the yogajayu determined by various combina-tions of planets called the yoga. Their judgement started withthe time of birth itself. In chapter 2 therefore the three types'of arishtas known as Gandarishta, Tithi ganda and lagnaganda, visha navamsasi, inauspicious muhurtas for the birth

have been explained. Sadyo'arishta, arishtas, and yogarishtas

have been described briefly and the principles in the back-

ground explained. various flactors that nulliff the effects of

iUo.'" arishtas have also been refened to in the chapter'

There is a special emphasis on the study of childhood

period which ranges upto 12 years of age with minor adjust'

ments both wayJ because it is during this period that the

prospects of liG depend more c,n various external circum-

"t.rr"u" than on the blessinp or curse of the planets. In other

words, the problem of early life was considered with reference

to Desh, Kala and Patra that is the country, period, and the

peison. chapter 3 deals with the claqsification of life into

1h""" compartments, namely, the alpayu, madhyamayu and

poornayu tased on the study of the strength/weakness of-houses

and planets. This has been followed by an attempt at

studying the various factors that prove deterrents to the pros-

pects of the continuitY.

In chapter 4 the principles relating to the study of the

birth charl have been explained. The good and bad planets

and houses, importance of nodes, variousyogas, importance of

drekkana.s and navamsas and the principle of Bhavadbhavam

etc. have been dealt with. various causes of death have been

studied. Transit systern, Pada rasis, the Upgrahas, Tara dasa'system, Spashta Deha, Spashta Mrityu and Spashta Jeeva

have also been included in the study.

Is is after confirmation in various ways that life would last

for some substantial period, atternpts were made about the

calculation of longevity mathematically in precise terms. Inall

there are 32 methods. All of them could not be included in this

book for reasons of space but the most important and popular

of them have found their place' Chapter 5 deals with ash-

takavarga system of calculations. Preparation of charts,

Ekadhipatya and Trikona Sodhanas. Mandal Sodhana, Rasi

and graha gunakaras have all been explained in detail with

.practlcal example Samudaya ashtakavarga and its calcula-'liotrs with practical illustrations have also been included. In

the end, a word about the circumstances under which Bhinna

ashtakvarga or the Samudaya ashtakvarga should be triedand working out the dasa system has been explained'

Badrayan's horary system of calculating the longevitywith step by step considerations supported by practical calcu'lations have been explained. The Rasmikayu calculations,Bharanas and haranas, the nakshatrayu, Gauri Jataka andJaimini system have been included with practical illustra-tions. They form the subject matter of chapter 6.

In Chapter 7 the Pindayurdaya and the Amsakayurdayamethods have been discussed in detail and illustrated withpractical exarnples in each case.

Chapter 8 has been devoted to a new method of determin'ing the longevity. Its separate treatment would indicate'itsimportance. The method is really novel in the sense that Ihave not found it in the classical books. It was found in thebook 'Span of Life' written by Sh. G. S. Rama Murthi. Thesecond edition of the book was published in 1971. Sh. RamaMurthi has stated that this method is being practised success'fully by one family of astrologers in the South. There are twomain merits of the method. The one great merit is that it is toosimple to be explained and practised. There are no ifs andbuts. The way it has been explained indicates that it is univer-sally applicable. The other advantage is that it is very easy topraciise without any mathematical calculations. As regardsits usefulness this author has very little to comment, as thesame has not so far been used by him. The ne,"sons for itsrecommendation is that it takes into account the life fiactorsfrom various angles. The calculations are rnade ovr that basisof four important fiactors which deal with life in its variousaspects. The lagna represents the native. The third houseindicates his prowess. The eighth house is for life itself accord-ing to astrological prirrciples. The tenth house stands for kar-masthana as well as the retirement from life. The readers arerequested to practise it thernselves and draw their own con-clusion. It would be better if they could share their experi-ences with others.

Chapter 9 deals with all the methodsof calculations oollec-tively. Their practical utility has been discussed and various

Page 7: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

8

circumstances under whlch one or the other method can beused has been explained. In short a comparative study of themethods is the subject rnatter of the chapter.

In practical life of today it has been noticed that themethods fail not so much on account of their own short com-irrgs as due to the diffierences in the times then and now. Theetresses and hurdles on the way today are not only many innumber but also much deeper in intensity. The accidentswhich take a heavy toll of hurnan life every now and then callfor a deeper study. Of course as human beinp we are quiteimperfect instruments to judge the ways of providence. Wecan howerrer be more careful and cautious attempts. The extracare that can be taken in judgement has been discussed andexplained to some extent in the chapter.

In the Epilogue the author has tried to cval.uate the vari-ous methods by way of critical appreciation of the methodsand their practical utility. A word about what the author hasbeen doing in this respect has also been added by way ofadvice. This may be followed or rejected lies within the discre-tion of the readers.

The basis of calculation of lonpvity, be it in mathematical

of the planets in degrees and minutes at least, if not in sec-

are two shoit cuts to check the correctness. One way is to try

to check up a few events of the earlier life of the native. If the

same have taken place during the period indicated by the

chart it ean be preeumed that the chart is correct to a reason'

within certain limits of time. This is an eaqy method and can

be relied upon. No rectification need be undertaken. The other

method is itre method of Krishnamurti Padhdhati or K' P', as

it is pnerally called. In this sletem we ane guided by the

Ruling Planets of the moment.

The sign lord of the ascendant and the nakshatra lordshould be one of the Ruling Planets. Venus being the ascen-dant lord of the chart is correct because it is also one of theR. Ps. Mars the nakshatra lord being also one of the R. Ps. isalso conect. It would be a little more interesting to note thatthe sub lord Mars is in Saturn star which is also one of theruling planets. If we wish to go into the calculations of sub-sublord he would also be one of the ruling planets at the time ofscrutiny. This appears to be the easiest method of checkingthe chart. Generally the difference of time may not exceedabout 10 - 15 minutes. In that case the lagna cusp may be insome other constellation which has to be moved to suit theruling planets and time adjusted according to the place ofbirth. The following case was refened to the author in Janu-ary 1991. Instead of checking the lagna at that time oneglaring fiact of life came to notice which was confirmed. Theglaring fact was that the native who at the time of consulta-tion was past 48 years, should not have been married. Thehoroscope of the native is reproduced below for readers'ex-amination.

not being dealt with here. The other equally easy method is also explained. Conrrert

the time of birth into vighatis if it is given in ghatis. If the timeis given in LS.T. (Indian standard time) eonvert it into ghatisand vighatis after sunrise and then corrvert them to vighatis.Multiply the vighatis by 4 and divide the result by g. Take theremainder and count asi many nakshatras from Aswini/MaghaMoola as the remainder. This is according to the posi-tion of Moon at the time of birth. If Moon has croesed Aswinibut not Magha count from Aswini and check up whether Moonis in the oorrect nakshatra in the chart. An example will makeit clear.

A child is born at 55143 ghatis after sun rise. Each ghatihas 60 vighatis. Hence total vighatis are (60 x 55) + 43 = 8348.This divided by nine gives a remainder 4. Moon is iri Leo at

. L4.2L. We therefore count 4 from Magha. We get Hasta thenakshatra. In the case under reference Moon is in poorvaPhalguni. Thus the time of birth is doubtful. Rectification ofthe chart is not the purpose here, hence the same has not beenexplained.

In Uttar Kalamritam there is one quite interestingmethod. Convert the ghatis into Vighatis and divide thern by225. lf the remainder is between 0 and llb or 45 and g0 or 1b0and225 the native shor:ld be male; otherwise a female. In theabove case the Vighatis are 3343. This divided by 22lleaves aremainder 193. The remainder is between 1b0 and 225. Thebirth therefore should be of a male child. The native is reallya male child. This one is too simple to be adopted. This showsonly the sex of the chitd. It does not confirm the time of thebirth. Unless there is some grave mistake of time the methodmay not work. It has nothing to do with the actual time. Itdeals with the period. Readers may be benefitted in predictingthe sex of the child just from the chart. The author does notclaim much of dependable experience on the subject. Researchis needed which some of the esteemed readers may be inclinedto undertake.

There are other methods of checking the correctness oftime of birth. The one method is through the Ardhayamesh

also. This is a long proc€ss. The same is not being dealt withhere. Those who are interested may refer, for easy expositionthe book A5rurnlrnaya by Acharya Mukund with Hindicommentary of Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra.

Chapter 2

Arishtas and Arishta-Bhangas

The longevity can be determined in many ways. They areboth astrologrcal and mathematical according to astrologicalprinciples. It is however agreed to by the sages that themathematical calculation should not be undertaken before thechild attains at least the age of 12 years. It is believed thatdeath before or upto 4 years of age depends largely on theoonstitution and the sins of omission and commission ofmother. Mother may be herself suffering from disease whichmay hamper the growth of the child who lives on her milk andprove fatal. The death between 4 years and eight years mayoccur due to father's negligence or his bad karmas. It is noteasy to identiff the sins (bad karmas) of father but it caneasily be appreciated that the negligence or ignorance of fa-ther can make or mar the longevity. When the child is suffer-ing from chicken pox the father may consult the witch doctorsinstead of medical oflicers, and be the cause of death of thechild. Competent medical officers may not be available whichmay also cause death. The death between 8 and 12 years ofage is supposed to be due to the sins of child itself in hisprevious birth. Whatever be the neasnna it is quite reasonableto say that no assessment of life-span should be attemptedbefore the child attains a stage where he can look alter himselfat least to some extent.

In view of the considered views of sages and seer€ it ispropoeed to deal with the arishtas and the class€s of life in thirschapter.

Life has been divided into three classes, namely the al-payu or short life, madhyamayu or the medium life anddeerghayu or the long life. The appropriate period of alpayu is

Page 14: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Arishtas and Arishta-Bhangas lb

32 years. The arishtas which may reduce this span have beendivided into three classes. They are saddyo aGhtu", arishtayogas and yogarishtas. The saddyo arishtas give their resultspromptly or, say, upto 8 years of age. The ar-irshta yogas do itbetween the ages of g and 20 and the yogarishtas betieen theages 20_and 30years. They are all, therefore, called the alpayuyogas. In the sense of our modern divisions of life the sjddyoarishtas may be calted the Balarishtas. They are of threekinds namely the gandarishtas, the grabarishtas and patakivedha arishtas.

Gandarishtas

There are certain periods which are considered inauspi-cious for any birth. They are called the gandarishtas. hhegandarishta.s are three in number viz the gandarishtas, tithi-alisftas and lagna-gandas. Virtually they are only two. Thethird one the lagna-ganda is only an extension of

-gandarish-

tas. .

There are se\En planets and two nodes. Each of themrules orrer three constellations. The constellations of Mercrrryand of Ketu are not judged auspicious for any birth. These areAswini, Mula, Maghq Aslesha,Jeyeshtha and Revati. If Moonhappens to be posited in any of these onstellations the new-born is supposed to sufrer from the ill effects of gandarishtawidely known in the lay-man,s languap as gandalmoola. Theparents of the child born in gandarishta seek the advice ofastrologers regarding epecial poojas havanas and charity etc.to be done to propitiate planets toavoid their displeas.tr"'. ttr"learned Acharya Mukand has further sub-diviied the gan-darishtas into three. They are the Dina-gandas or day ganias,Ratri gandas or the lSrt gpndas ana the Sandhi E""a*.According to him the birth when Moon is in Mura ur" J"rr"-ththa is the dina-gandq that in the Aslesha ana Irragha isRatri-ganda and in Rerati and Aswini it is Sandhya g""a"

fithi ganda

The former arishtas were due to Moon's occ'pation of theconstellations. Tbis is about the births on certain-dates of the

Page 15: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

lunar months.

The Hindu lunar month is divided into two fortnightscalled the Sukla Paksha (the bright fortnight) and KrishnaPaksha (the dark fortnight). The period when Moon is increas-ing is called the Sukla Paksha. The cuunting of days is 15 foreach instead of 30 straight-way. The first one ghati (24 min-utes) of the first and the last one ghati of the last 15th dateforms Tithi ganda. In this way thele are three tithi gandas vizthe periods between the 15th and lst, 5th and 6th, and be-tween the tenth and eleventh. They are all treated asinauspicious. For academic purposes only these tithi gandashave been mentioned here. In fact all this is with reference toMoon's position vis-a-vis Sun. The tithis in Hindu calender arewith-reference to Moon's position in relation to Sun and notamrding to the number of days passed.

Lagna GandaAs has already been stated earlier the lagna gandanta is

only an extension of the gandarishta. The constellations ofKetu, it would be noted, fall in the beginningof Aries, Leo andSagittarius rasis and those of Mercury in the end of Cancer,Scorpio and Pisces. If the lagna happ"ns to fall in the Sandhisof these rasis the period of one ghati on both eides is called theLagna-gandanta. A great deal tras been said about them inMuhurta Par[iata and Muhurta Martanda" It ie a point forresearch whether they are inauspicious and if so to whatextent and why. Readers may have their own experimentsand conclusions. To the author they are not always bad. Allthis depends upon the position of their lords in the chart.

It may be stated that in Hindu astrologr Sun, Moon andthe lagna are the three pillars of any birth chart. The auspi-ciousness here is with reference to lagna and its onjunctions.

It is however for consideration here that only the coastel-lations of Ketu and Mercury are considered evil. Why thesetwo have been singled out is a matter for research. So far asthe practical experience goes no star is universally good orbad. It is his position in the horoscope that makes him thirs orthat. In the view of the author it is neessary to judge the

Visha Navamsas or the Poisonous Navamsas

As some constellations have been declared inauspicious so

also some smaller portions have been clagsified as bad

or inauspicious. 'itt"y are rather worse than the

inauspicious ones. They are termed as Visha or the poison

which are as under:

The ill effects of the navamsas are as under'

The navamsa of Sun is harmful to father, of Moon to

mother, of Mars to maternal uncle, of Saturnto brother'of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus to the native himself'

For propet appreciation of the above observations it is

For Virgoans he will be the 6th lord. For Taureans the posi'tion is not so. We have to take into consideration the constel'lations involved. It would be the constellation of Sun who is agreat enemy of Satum. Similarly other positions can also beexamined. The fifth navamsa lord for C'emini, Libra andAquarius would be Saturn. He is 8th lord for Gemini, an<ilagnesh and, 12th, lord for Aquarius. For Librans Saturn isthe yogakaraka being the 4th, and the 5th lord but the con-stellation would be of Rahu who is a natural malefic.

Now there are certain yogas which may be classified asBalarishta yogas. They are Yamaghantayoga and Kulika yo-gas. The yamaghanta yoga is formed if:

' ,1. On Sunday Moon is in Magha,od 2. On Monday Moon is in Vishakha

The Kulika Muhurta is offset if the week day lord andMoon are strong and if a benefic planet is pcsited in the lagna.

Apart from the above our sages have identified certainsensitive points in the zodiac which are considered to beinauspicious if Moon occupies those points at the time of birthof the native. They are to be found in all the rasis. Theirdegrees are however difrerent in each case. They are Aries 8',Taurus 25" Gernini 22', Canrer 22';Lm 21"; Virgo 1'; Libra 4"Scorpio 23"; Sagittarius 18", Capricorn 20" Aquarius 20' andPisces 10'.i : .

After discussing various sensitive poinLs in the zodiac andtiminp of birth etc. considered inauspicious it becomes neces-sary to detail the planetary combinations called the yogaswhich inf luence the l i fe span of the individual.Considering the spacr: available in the book it is not possible togive all the yogas given by the sages. Those who are interestedare advised to consult the ciassical books on the subject. A ref-erence to some of them is enough to explain various funda-mental principles. .t ) \ j r -1 1i

It has been stated earlier that arishtas are in relation toLagna, Sun and Moon. In other words there are three cardinalfactors considered important in the a.*cessment of longevity. The liactors that afllict the lagna, Sun or Moon individually or'severally will tell upon the life span of individual. The positionof planets that is 6/8 are detrimental. The 6/8 position meansone of the planet is in the 6th house and the other in the8th house from each other. The other point that is detri-mental to the afliairs of house concerned is the 12th housefrom it. The following few yogas may be examined in thisbackground.

1. If Sun or Moon are afflicted in the lagna by Rahu or as-sociated with Saturn and l{ars occupies the 8th house, the mother and the child both die.

afllicted by the effects of eclipse produce the same r€-sults.

4. Moon in the 7th or 8th house surrounded by the maleficsproduce the above effects.

5. Malefics occupying 2nd, 6th, 8th and 12th houses formthe yoga of early death of the child. .

6. Lagna and 7th houses sandwiched between the maleficsbring about the results at 5 above.

?. Aflliction of Sun by Mars in the 7th house from Moonbring about the demise of the child within one week ofthe birth.

The yogas detailed above are r€ry few in number. Theyhave been detailed herejust to elaborate the points broughtout above. It may also be pointed out that the houses 2 andseven are regarded as marakasthanas because 2nd is 12th tothe 3rd house and ?th is 12th to 8th - the two ayusthanasi orthe places indicating life/prowess of the native.

There are yogas which give death in the matter of days, weeks, months and years. They are not being reproduced herefor obvious neasons.

As there are yogas for the arishtas there are yogas whichnulliff the effects of arishtas. They also need careful study be'fore pronouncing any judgement on the basis of mere arishtas.Jupiter is the greatest benefic planet of the solar system. Hisauspicious position in the birth chart is an indication that thenative can tide over his bad period by proper remedial meas-ures like bhakti (derotion), alms and charity etc. Some of thearishta-bhanga yogas are detailed here only to underlineagain the underlying principles.'

1. Jupiter in lagna, Kendra (4th, ?th, or 10th houses) or' Trikonahouses (Sthand 9th) wards offall the lagnarish-" tas. This is doubly so if the rasis ocorpied by Jupiter are

his own (Sagittarius or Pisces) or that of hig exaltationthat is Cancer.

2. Any benefic planet in Kendra with Sun in the llth housecan ward off all the inauspiciousness of lagna.

,, 3. If the malefic planets are in the vargas of benefic planets: and are aspected by benefics who are strong and in the

vargas of benefic planets the misfortunes of lagnarishtasare warded off. The vargas here mean the Navamsas.

, 4. All the arishtas are s€t at naught if all the benefics ar€posited in their vargottama navamsa (where the planetoccupies the same rasi in navamsa chart as he does inthe birth chart) and all the evil planets are in the rasis offriends or benefics.

5. If any one of Mercury, Jupiter or Venus is strong and oc'cupies Kendra and is unafflicted by aspect, coqjunctionor association of malefics all the arishtas are warded off.On Saravali Mercury has been left off). In fact Mercurybecomes a benefic only when he is unafflicted.

6. If Mercury is posited in his moola trikona, or in his ownnavamsa duly aspected by Venus the arishtas arewarded off. The same results follow if Mercury in thelagna is aspected by Jupiter.

The yogas warding off the arishtas on account of Gan-danta evils are grven below.

1. If Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are in 5th and 9th housesfrom each other.

2. Ketu's occupation of 3rd, 6th, or llth house which hap-pens to be Libra, Capricorn or Pisces is an importantanti-arishta.

9. Rahu's occupation of the 3rd, 6th, or l1th, house dulyaspected by the benefics produces the same resuJts.

4. Rahu's occupation ofAries, Taurus or Caner which hap-pens to be the lagna of the native produces the sameresults.

6. Saturn's occupation of ascendant, 3rd, 6th, or l1th housewhich happens to be his own rasi or the rasi of hisexaltation or that of Jupiter produces the same results asabove

6. In the case of night borns (between the period of Sun-set

and the followingSun rise) Moon's occupation of the 1lth

Venus, occupation ofKendra, Trikona or llth house pro-

duces the same results'

The various yogas that cancel the bad effects produced by

Moon's position.

1. Full Moon aspected by all the planets'

2. Moon in his highest position of exaltation duly aspected

by Venus.

3. Er.en a weak Moon posited in the navarnsast of benefic

duce the same resullt as ahove.

birth is in dark fortnight) is a strong antidote for all

arishtas.

These are some of the inauspicious yogas' The yogas

cancelling them have also been detailed. More can be had from

classical lexts or some of smaller books on the subject. The

purpose of repeatingsome of them is to underline their impor-

i.tr.u. Their i*po"tan* can never be over-emphasised when

subject under discussion is longevity.

Divisions of Lifet ; \ r

':i In the foregoing pages the discussion was restricted to a

very short span of period called the childhcod days. In that

short space the inauspicious timinp of birth and sensitivepoints in the zodiac affecting the life of the new born, and

some yogas nulliffing the arishtas were discu*sed in brief.'The

childhood period is normally a part of alpayu whichextends upto the age of about 32 years. This division is just anarbitrary division. In practice there may be a difference of 2-3

years both ways. The person living upto the age of 30 or 35years will be supposed to have an alpayu or the short life' A

sepiilate treatment of the period of childhood has been glven

because the life during that period depends more upon theexternal circumstances than the planetary combinationscalled the yogas or other factors. Despite so many arishtaspresent in the birth chart for the childhood days it has been

seen that child often does not even fall sick during the period

of arishtas. This is due to many factors. One of them is theadvancement of medical science. The chicken pox known tillthe other day as a dreaded and fatal disease has now almostbeen banished. Further, the high degree of health conscious-ness of the general man ha,s contributed immensely to reduc'ing the mortality rate. These days the illness is not supposedto be a curse of some divine power. No ojhas (persons practis'

ing witchcraft) are invited to cure the sick child. These andmany other factors have often fought the divine curse of theplanets and achieved the ultimate victory. This was particu-

larly on this account that a special treatment 'Has given to thechildhood period. For further study it is necessary to have afresh outlook on the life span as a wholc.

In the context of our study a brief reference to Ashtottari

and Vimsottari dasa system appears necessary' In terms of

Ashtottari dqsa the normal life of the individual is taken to be

108 years. In Virnsottari system it has been taken as 120

yearn. In fact none ofthe periods has beelr nearer to the actual

"prtt. In view of this position the long life is taken to mean 96

yL** with marginal adjustments on both sides'

The life span of the individual is divided into three catego-

ries or classes namely the alpayu or the short life, madhyayu

or the medium life and deerghayu or the long life. The short

life or the alpayu runs upto the age of 32 years' There are

various planetary combinations which, other thinp remain-

ing the ""-",

do not allow the longevity to go beyond 32 years'

The factors that attempt to cut short the life are known as

arishta.s and those that nulliff their effects aI€ known as

arishta bhangas. In judging the life span both of them need a

careful study. In the classical texts one can come across yogas

which fix upthe life span too precisely in mathematical terms.

There *"" yog* which limit the longwity ta 22 yearc or 30

years. nre stuay of such yogas is neither required in the work-nor

desirable also. It is not advisable to determine the longev-

ity in absolute terms on the basis of the yogas' An approxi-

mate idea to a certain degree of reasonable accuracy is what is

sought for here. Some of the important yogas for the alpayu

are detailed here.

1. Second lord in 9th house, Jupiter and Venus in llth and

Saturn in ?th house.

2. Mars in the ?th house, Venus in 8th and Sun in 9th

house.

3. Saturn in the 7th house and Sun in the 4th.

4. Malefics in the Kendras without any benefic influences

on them and the ascendant lord weak.

5. Out gf the three important planets that is the 8th lord,

10th iord and ascendant lord only one is strong and the

other two weak.

6. If all the planets are posited in the houses I to 12.

Page 24: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Diuisions of Life 25

In respect of the yogas refened to above the main consid'

eration has been of the lagna and of the death inflictingplanets. The planets in the houses 2 and 7 and the lords of

these houses are the maraka planets. The same thing should

be studied with reference to the ascendant lord, 8th lord, 10th

lord and Saturn the ayush karaka planets. Other combina-tions for alpayu are as under:

1. The ascendant lord is an enemy of Sun and is posited in

the house of his enemy.

2. An the planets occupy houses I ta 12.

3. Moon is weak in the chart and Jupiter and Venus occupylagna and Mars and Saturn occupy the bth house..

4. Saturn in Aries (debilitated ayush karaka), Mercury in' Taurus, Sun in Taurus/Virgo/ Aquarius and the 8th

house occupied by a nalefic.

6. The 8th lord in kendra, Jupiter and Sun in lagna (if the

lagna happens to be Cancer).

6. Jupiter in lagna and Moon with Rahu in the 7th or 8thhouse.

?. The 8th lord in kendra or the 12th house from lagna orMoon.

In the Prasna Marga some more combinationsl are grven

which cause alpayu yogas. Some of them are:

1. Weak lagna lord and weak Moon.

2. Lagpa and Moon having malefic aspects over them.

8. Lagna and Moon being associated with malefics.

4. Combust lords of lagna and rasi.

6. Solar or lunar eclipse at the time of birth

6. Moon in the 8th house.

?. Kendras, ttikonas and the 8th house ocnrpied by

malefics.

Page 25: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

,26 Judgement of l-ongeuitY

There are many other yogas which indicate a short span.Normally the alpayu means the age upto 32 years. This is soonly in normal cases which generally do not obtain in practicallife. This is only an approxirnation. Some marginal adjust-ments both ways may be required. In fact a very careful studyof the factors affecting the life both by increasing it and by,decreasing it is necessary. The study of planetary strength isalso equally important.

The higher and lower limits of madhyayu are 64 and 32years. As it is with the alpayu here also the minor adjust-ments are necessary. The persons enjoyrng the span of 50 and70 years shall both be considered to be having a madhyamayu. There are yogas for the madhyamayu also. The principlesgoverning the madhyamayu are the same as for alpayu. TheSun, Moon and the lagna are given maximum importance andthe rnutual relationships of tlrem as a result of their place-ments with reference to each other are studied. Some points inthe zodiac are declared inauspicious and the lagna rising atthose places is treated as undesirable for purposes of longspan. Some portions of the constellations are also found notconducive to the long span of life. In the madhyamayu alsoalmost the same principles are observed with some difference. It was the cusp of the lagna which was given special attentionto these. Here the exarnination is of the lagna as a whole.Saturn being the ayush karaka holds the same importantposition in the consideration of Madhyamayu as it did in thealpayu. The 8th house and the 8th lord get the sarne impor-tance. . r ! i , j : r I . . . i

Some guiding principlee for determining the strength ofhouses have been laid down in the Prasna Marga.They arew e a k i f : : ! . . . . ! , , ,

1. Their lords are weak. ' rii, iil"l'. 'ur

5. Evil influence of the badhakadhipaties

6. Involved in malefic yogas, and

7. Not being aspected by their lords.

The flactors opposite to the above indicate the strength of

the houses.'

A" it is for the houses so also it is for the planets. TheLstrength

of the planets here does not signiff the shadbala'necessarily.

For his strength the planet should not be aspected

by or associated with malefics; should not be hemmed between

them or in their rasis or navamsas. The planet should not be

placed in an evil house and he should be posited in his own

iasi, rasi of exaltation or his friend's rasi or navamsa or his

rasi of e:<altation. ii

Some of the important yogas indicating madhyamayu areglven below. The same cautions as were observed in thejudgement of alpayu are to be observed here. The favourableand the unfavourable yogas or arishtas should be noted along-

with the arishta-bhangas, their comparative strengths and

weaknesses assessed and suitable adjustments made in the

maximum life span of the native.

1. If malefrcs oct'upy houses 2,3,4,5,8 and 11-

'2. If weak Jupiter owns the lagna and malefics occupy ken-

i.r,j, dras, trines and houses 6,8 and 12.

3. If a benefic is in kendray'trine, powerful Saturn in 6th

,r, and/or a malefic in 8th house.

4. If the trines and kendras are occupied both by benefics &

6. Weak lagna lord, Jupiter in Kendray'trine hou'qes andmalefics in 6th 8th and 12th houses.

''"6. For day borns if malefics occupy 8th house from Moon.

7. It any of the three lords - lords of lagna, 8th and 10thhouses - is weak.

Besides the above yogas there are certain combinationswhich limit the life to certain specifrc number of years within

Page 27: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

the span of middle life. All those can be treated as yogas formiddle life.

1. If a benefic ir, his own sign aspects the 8th house the lifespan may be 10 years or 40years.

2. If a powerful benefic planet occupies a quadrant andMercury also occupies a quadrant which happens to behis own house/friends'house/his house of exaltation withMoon in the 7th aspected by Jupiter the native will have50 years ofage.

3. Mercury, in 4th or 10th house, Moon in lagna, 8th or12th house and Jupiter and Venus posited in any onehouse together the native may have 50 years of age.

4. Sun in association with malefics occupies the lagna,Moon in 10th, and Jupiter in the kendra, the native getsan age ofabout 55 years.

5. Venus in lagna, Jupiter in kendra, and Saturn in 9thhouse. The native enjoys an age of63 years.

6. From lagna to the 4th house, if any one of the houses isoccupied by four pianets the person enjoys 61. years ofage.

7. The person gets 60 years of ap if the lagna or any of thekendra houses is occupied by Jupiter and Venus andthere is one planet in the fourth house.

8. Venus in lagna, Jupiter in the quadrant and Saturn in9th. The native gets 63 years of age.

iikewise many yogas indicating long life may be quotedhere. Before such yogas are reproduced it may be clarifiedthat the long life extends upto 96 years. With suitable adjust-ments of the strengths of yogas, of the planets and of thehouses the maximum limit can be stretched upto 108 years.Persons have been seen living beyond this span also. Theremay be some who may cross even the limit of 120 years. Thesages are reported to be living those ages and beyond in nor-mal course. Their longevity comes under amityu yoga, Muni

considered necessary to deal with them because such long

spans of life are not a normal feature in the days we are all

We witt inciude them all in long life or deerghayu' The Jataka

Tatva mentions the following combinations for long life'

1. If Moon is in 5th house, Jupiter in trine position and

Mars in the 10th house.

2. If the 8th lord who happens to be a malefic or Saturn

8. Lord of8th house posited in the lagna and aspected by

9. Jupiter & Venus posited in quadrants.

In the Prasna Marga also there are some yogtss indicatinglong life. Some of them are given here for the benefit of read-

ers.

1. Lagna and Moon should be strong.

2. Lagnalord and the lord of Moon sign should have beneficaspects on or association of benefic planets with them.

Death Inflicting PtanetsiTlli 1. ; . I j ' ,

iJTi

liongevity is a very vast subject. Life span is not only thespan that the planets grant. It is also affected by the circum-stances that put an end to it. As the planets grant life so alsothere may be the planets which not only affect life but directlyput a stop to it. Such planets may be called the killing planetsor the death-inflicting planets known as the marakeshas inthe technical vocabulary here.

The discussion has so far been about the fiactors causinglife and sustaining it. Various Sadhaka and Badhaka factorswere studied. Sadhaka factors prornote the prospects of life. The Badhaka ones may be taken as deterrents to sadhakafactors. The same question of life can be studied fnom an otherpoint of view. An attempt to identiff the planets who canpossibly cause a cessation of life or bring about the death willalso be equally important. Any measure of suocess in thisattempt would also be rewarding. We know the time of birthand date of birth etc., when the horoscops is produced forjudgement. If by any device we can find out the probable dateand time etc., of death our problem is solved. The longevity, after all, is nothing but the period intervening between thebirth and death. In this chapter the problem shall be analysedfrom this point ot' view. The death inflicting planets will beidentified for the purpose.

.i: No particular planet is universally bad or good. It is onlyits placement in the birth chart that makes him so. The rankmalefic planet like Saturn has been seen as the most beneficfor some natives and it may look stranp but true that thesame rank malefic is considered to be the karaka or thesignificator of life. The most benefic planet of the solar s5retem,

rrib ot."rc.iw:s.d f r:r' :1 ' r . ' ,

Page 31: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

32 Jrtdgemcnt of I'ongeuitY

Jupiter, is not credited with this dignity when the question of

life span is considered.

In order to identiff the death inflicting planet it is neces"sary to identi$ the evil house of the horoscope from the pointof view of life because it is the place of the planet that makeshim dreaded or the dearest Planet.

Lagna or the ascendant in the chart represents the physi'

cal body of thd native, his general health and immunity orotherwise to diseases. Any house detrimental to Lagna may, ifnot must, prorre detrimental to the eontinuan@ or sustenanceof the physical body. Chandra lagna or the sign where lVloon isposited at the time of birth also gets the same importanoe astihe lagna. Twelfth house to any house is always detrimentalto the affairs of the latter aecording to astrological principles.

As lagna and the Moon sign in the birth chart stand forphysical existence, house 8 stands for the life of the individual.Eighth house to 8th is the third house which also gets thesame importance because it stands for Prakrama or the prow-

ess of the natirrc. Any deterrent to 3rd house would be fiatal tothe native in the same way ae it would be for the 8th house.

For the consideration of life therefore the important houses tobejudged are the lagna, the Chandra lagna, the 8th house andthe 8rd house. The detrimental house will be 12th house fromthese hous€s. The twelfth house for lagna is the 12th house ofthe chart and lfth to 8th and 3rd houses will be ?th and 2ndhouses of the chart respectirrely. The lfth house to Moon signcan be determined by finding out the house from the as@n-dant where Moon was posited at the time of birth. In short theevil houses from the point of view of longevity would be thehouses, 2,7 and 12 from the ascendant and the Moon. Theplanets associated with these houses in any manner are po-

tent malefics. Here one thing that is to be kept in mind is thatthe lagnesh or the lord of the ascendant should always betreated as benefic unless very badly afiicted. For the Capri-cprnians Saturn is the lagnesh as well as the 2nd lord or the

marakesh and the death inflicting planet. Despite his lordshipof the 2nd house he will generally remain a benefic unless he

is afilicted by other planets. Similar is the case with Venus'

Page 32: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Infl.icting Platwts 33

For the Taureans Venus is the lagpa lord as well as theseventh lord and therefore the marakesh. Unless he is af-

flicted by virtue of his occupation or association etc., he willprove a benefic. Having identi{ied the houses the study canproceed further.

Apart from the evil houses and the association or connec-tion of the planets with them Saturn being the anrsh karakahas also an important part to play in the question of life anddeath.

The important evil combinations are girn:n below.

L. The eighth lord posited in the houses 6, 8 or 12 becomesa potent maraka. Death may oocur in major or minor pe-riod of this lord.

2. The lord of sign occupied by Saturn also becomes a mar-aka. Death may oome about in the main or minor periodof 8th lord.

3. The planet onjoining the eighth lord also trecomes amaraka planet. The death may ocur in the concurrentperiods of the two planets.

4. Lord of 8th house from MoonA,agna occupying the 8thhouse and aspecting lagna or Moon. The period of both8th lords are bad.

5. Lagna lord occupying an evil house in conjunction orassociation with Rahufi(etu becomee a death inflictingplanet himself.

There are many other situations where the 8th lord andlagnesh turn to be maraka grahas. The main points to under-stand and remember are:

1. The planets concerned with the maintenance of life doturn malefics by their plaaements in the evil houses.

2. The sign lords of evil houses are sometimes the potentdeath inflicting planets and the planets connected withthese planets also become malefics to the extent ofbecoming the death inflicting planets.

In effect there are many death inflicting planets. In some

Page 33: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

34 Judgement of Longeui$

cases all the planets and nodes become marakeshas. Some of

them may become so by virtue of occupations of evil houses,

others by virtue of lordship of these houses and still others

by conjunction or associations. In such cases the actual

marakesh has to be determined on the basis of relative

strength of planets which again needs a careful study'

Normally the lagna lord is always benefic. If he occupies the

lagna and obtains the dignity of exaltation etc., he becomes

very powerful. If he happens to be comparatively weaker than

the81h lord, the later in his minor periods will cause illness

and death in his major Period.

Besides the above there are some mone yogas which may

be noted here.

1. Ifthe lord ofthe lagna and the 8th house occupy houses

LlLl\fl 19 or 10 alongwith some other planet the death

occurs in the Paka period of the planet occupying the 8th

house.

2. If the 8th lord is weak and occupies any of the trine or

quadrant houses along with some other planet the death

takes place in the period of 8th lord.

3. If Saturn occupies the lagna or the 8th house it may be

the period of Saturn - major or minor-when death oc-curst.

4. The lords of lst and 2nd house, if occupying movablesigrrs, give death in their own periods.

6. The conclusions may be drawn from Ashtaka Varga also.

The classical writers have identified the evil periods on

the basis of birth constellations or the Janma Nakshatras aswell as the rasis in the lagna.

It may be pointed out here that despite all the exencise atthe identification of maraka planets it has not been possible todetermine the importance of each planet as a maraka graha. The yogas simply tell us the nature of planets, that is theplanets who can as well play the part of marakas. Who are themost pctent of them to do the work remains still to be identi-fied. It would be better if some sort of classification is made of :

Page 34: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Inflicting Planets 35

all the maraka planets and on that basis identification of thevilest and worst malefic can fruitfully be attempted.

It has been said earlier that houses 1, 8 and 3 are impor'tant for the existence ofthe native and 12th house ofeach ofthem is the deterring house for the fulfillment of the objectiveof the house. This is to say that if the houses 1,8, and 3 referto life, their 12th houses refer to be the maraka houses. Thelords of these maraka houses, their occupants and the planetsconnected with them become the death inflicting planets. There may also be some other planets who may not be directlyconnected with these maraka planets or the houses, yet mayappropriate to themselves the responsibility of marakeshas.Such planets, if planets they can be called, are Rahu andKetu. They easily deputise for the planets associated withthem in the same house, for the planets who aspect them, forthe planets whose constellations they tenant and finally forthe planet who is the lord of their tenanted rasi. All thesedeath inflicting planets can be grouped in three categoriesnamely the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary. The second and?th lords are the death inflicting planets. The occupants ofthese houses are also classified as death inflicting planets.Planets conjoined with the above two lords also become themaraka planets. In some cases the lords of the 3rd, 6th and8th houses are also the killing planets and also the aspectingplanets some times assume this responsibility. Lords of the22nd drekkana and 64th Navamsa occupied by Moon can alsobe clubbed together with the maraka planets. In the face of somany planets and sometimes almost all the planets it is nec-essary to classi$ them as Primary, Secondary and Tertiarydeath inflicting planets in accordance with their power toperform the unfortunate act.

The most important are the planetsoccupyingthd 2nd and7th house. They are the primary death inflicting planets. Theoccupants are stronger than the lords. Amonpt the occupantsthe malefics are stronger than the benefics. In the lastamonpt the Primary death inflicting planets come the lords ofthese two houses, that is, of 2nd and 7th and the planetsconjoined with them.

Amonpt the secondary planets are included the beneficplanets occupying the 2nd and 7th houses. The lords of 3rd

In the list of tertiary maraka planets can be included

of Jupiter Moon can be treated as strong lagnesh aspectingthe lagna. The third factor indicating long life is that thelagna lord and the eighth lord should notbe in the same housetogether. In this case both may not be in the same house buttheir mutual direct aspect may be taken to mean to have thesame effect. Thus there are indications that the span of lifemay be classified as long life. Here it may be pointed that thefactors indicating the spa.n are not very powerful. After mak'ing some adjustments towards the lower side it can safely besaid that she would at least live upto the upper limit of themadhyamayu. After determining the approximate span of lifean attempt has to be made for determining the death inflect-ing planets.

Prinary MarakasSecond and 7th houses are the maraka houses. Their

occupants and lords have to be taken. They are Sunand Salurn, Mars by virtue of his occupation of the 2nd houseand Mercury due to his association with Sun the marakeshhas also to be included. Saturn is an ayush karakaplanet turned a maraka by being the lord of 7th house. Moonas a lagna lord in the 7th may not be a very great marakaplanet particularly when aspectud by Jupiter the 9th lord.Being the 6th Iord also simultaneously Jupiter is not whollybenefic.

Amonpt the Primary Marakas are Saturn Sun and Mars. Then there are Venus, Rahu, Jupiter and Mercury. HereSaturn is most important because he is the 7th lord (maraka)and 8th lord posited in lagna without any benefic aspectexcept that of Moon. Next in importance areVenus and Rahuas occupants of 6th house, and Jupiter as lord. Nodes are monepowerful than the planets. We get on that basis Rahu at num-ber 2. Actually she was murdered during the mahadasa ofSaturn and Bhukti ofRahu.

3. If the lagna cusp sub lord signifies both benefic and

The above rules are simple and easy to apply' The position

will be clear by the example of Mrs Indira Gandhi's horoscope.

Details of longitude have to be noted which are as under:

The lagna cusp falls in the constellation of Mercury and sub of

Jupite;. ThusJupiter is the sub lord of the lagna cusp' At

fS.Of fre is posited in the constellation of Mmn' He is the

lagna lord and as such a benefic. By occupying the '/th house

Hence he is a malefic. Thus the sub-lord of the cusp, Jupiter is

concerned with both benefic and malefic houses. He himself is

the lord of 9th house a benefic. According to rule 3 Indira

Gandhi was ordained a middle life which is arrived at above

through detailed examination of yogas.

For purposes of signiSing the results of various houses

following principles have to be noted. They are:

1. The occupa.nts of the houses are stronger to offer the

result ofthe houses they occupy than the lords ofthqse

houses.

Page 39: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

,m Judgement of Longeuity

2. The planels in the constellation of the occupants arestronpr than the occupants to offer the results of thosehouses.

3. The planets in the constellation of the lords of the housesare stronger to offer l,he results of the lrouses than thelords.

4. Nodes. if in any way oonnected with houses are the

, strr:ngest of all to offer the results. Their order of offeringresults is like this in the descending order.

, (a) Nodes give the resuits of planets conjoined with them.

(b) Nodes give the results of the planets aspee, ting them;and

(c) Nodes give the result of the lord of the house they areposited in.

In respect of the death infticting nature following rulesapplv.

(a) Badhakasthanas, their occuparrts and the lords are theworst tnalefics, worst than the maraka planets.

ft) The occupants and the lord of ?th house come next inpower to do the job.

(c) The occupants and the lorcl of 2nd house have less po-tenry than the planets at O) above.

(d) The occupants and the lord of6th,8th and 12th housesare the least powerful of all.

After assessi.ngthe span of iife the next step is tojudge thedeath infticting planets operating near about the period of herlife span.

I{er la.gna is Cancer, a movable sign. Its badhakasthana isllth from it which is Taurus. Jupiter occupies Taurus' I'Iealso signifies the afftrirs of 10th house, the karmasthana.Being the 6th lord he is already a malefic. Being in the starof Moon who occupies the ?th house Jupiter becomes apotent malefic. There is no planet in any of the threeconstellations of J'upiter. Next, to Jupiter in power comes

Page 40: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Infl.icting Ploruts 4l

Venus,tt" 5"6|ukedhipati. He is in his own nakshatra and

hence very strong. Mars is also in Venus constellation. He is

not a-q great a malefic because by being in the constellation of

Venus he will offer more predominantly the results of the

house occupied by his star lord. Thus Jupiter and Venus are in

the list of worst malefics.

Next in order is the 7th, house. Moon though in Capricorn, does not occupy the ?th house because, its longitude is27.2l-Hence there is no octupant of ?th house. Saturn is its lord.Sun and Mercury are in his constellations' Here Mercury isposited in Scorpio with Sun the second lord, and he is alsoaspected by his star lord technically posited in the 12th bhava.Sun being the 2nd lord comes as the least malefic. In thedescending order we have Jupiter, Venus, Mercury Saturn

and Sun. Here Rahu occupies one of the houses of Jupiter andis also associated with Venus. Hence Rahu becomes mol€powerful than Venus and Jupiter and therefore replaces both.Mrs Indira Gandhi was murdered when she was running thedasa of Saturn and Rahu.

The intention of introducing this systern which is knownas Krishnamurti Padhdhati or merely K. P. is just to get

the new students acquainted with it and leave it for them to

benefic planet's period which has been identified as evil, thedeath may be expected in the middle of the dasa period.Similarly, if the lagna rasi is strong by day the death maycome duringthe night and vice versa. These appear too simplerules to be followed in such intricate cases as life and death. Itwould be better if the planets are judged in the back-ground ofthe houses they own or occupy.

1. The planets owning any of the trine houses are alwa5rsbenefic irrespective of their natural qualities.

2. ,The lords of 3rd, 6th, Bth and llth houses are always tobe considered as malefics even though they be benefic bynature

3. The benefics owning the quadrants become functionalmalefics and the rnalefics in the same position becornefunctional benefics.

4. Lord of Lagna is always to be considered as benefic be-cause lagna is the one house which is both a trine and aquadrant.

Based on the principles of Laghu Parasari some eminentastrologers say that the planet merely by virtue of his lordship of an angular house does not behave the opposite of hisnature. One exception is the lagna lord himself. It is on-tended that lagnesh even if he is the lord of sixth or eighthhouse remains a benefic. Similarly, the two luminaries Sunand Moon do not become malefi<s even though they may bethe lord of 8th or sixth house. They may be cruel lords ofhouses 2and7 and their occupants are called the marakeshasor the death inflicting planets. Jupiter and Venus are sup-pos€d to be great malefics if they occupy the Znd house.Normally this is not so. Sushloka Shataka, a book based onLaghu Parasari holdg the view ihat these two benefics do notbecome great marakas unless they happen to be the lord of Zthhouse. For deterrnining the maraka planets some baeic prin-ciples need to be remembered.

In Uttar Kalamrit it is stated that the alfairs of any bhavashould be judged from the bhava concerned and also from

Page 44: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Infticting Planets 45

bhava which forms the same bhava from the concerned bhava'

If for example the affairs for judgement pertain to 4th' house,

the fourth house should be judged and also 4th to 4th that is

the 7th bhava should also be given equal importance. If affairs

of 10th house are to bejudged, the seventh house should not

be left out because it is the 10th house from tenth. If the lon-

gevity judg€d from the eighth house is the concern the 8th

hot* from the eighth should also be judged. It is on the same

logic perhaps thab 8th and 3rd houses are considered to be

representing life or a5rusha. The house 12th to any house

becomes a detrimental house. Therefore 2nd and 7th, houses

are taken to be the marakasthanas. The twelfth house is alsrr

taken into consideration in the context because the lap3la

denotes the physical body of the native and death neans

danger to this physical body. The 2nd and 7th houses are tlie

m"".k*thanas but 7th is a greater evil than the 2nd' It is the

7th lord who is more potent killer than the 2nd lord and on the

same analory the occupants of the 7th house are stronger

malefics than the occupants of the 2nd house. Similarly,

amongst the tnaraka planets those who are associated with

the ?th lord becorne greater marakas than those who are not

asqociated with the 2nd lord. In case the death inflictingplanets are not judpd to be potent death inflictors the 12th,

ilo.r* lord and occupants should be judged. Sometimes when

no planet is judged to be strong enough to inflict the penalty of

aeattr the malefic planet does the job. About the potency etc' of

the planets for giving the results of a particular house their

mutual relationship (not friendly or inimical) should bejudged. Maharishi Parasar has outlined 4 type of mutual

connections of the planets. They are.

1. Mutual exchangeof houses

2. Mutual aspect

3. Planet's full direct aspect on the planet occupying the

former's house.

4. Occupying the same rasi

In Jyotis Tatwa one more relationship is added. The plan-

ets get rnutually related to each other if they are posited in

Page 45: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

46 Judgement of Langeuity

triire or angle from each other. If Mars is in 10th house andSun in lagna or the seventh house, then Sun and Mars willhave mutual relationship. Similarly if Mars is posited in sec-ond house and Saturn in 6th they are mutually in trine and assuch related or better connected with each other. E:rperiencehas shown that such positions can not be ignored.

On the question of marakeshas, Saturn and the nodee, particularly, Rahu should be paid special attention. If Saturnirs connected with the maraka planets he appropriates tohimseff all the powers and becomes the biggest marakesh. The position of nodes is still more sensitive. They assumethe qualities of the planets who are conjoined with themor aspect them or are their sign dispositors. To end thediscussion on Marakeshas the position maybrieflybe summedup as under:

1. The houses 2nd and 7th are the marakasthanas. Seventhis worse than the 2nd and the planets as lords and/or oc-crrpants of these houses are marakeshas.

2. The planets connected with houses g, 6, 8, 11 and twelveare the malefic planets.

3. For the identification of death inflicting powers thestrength and weakness of planets should be judged.

4. If all the planets are equally powerful the 6th lord shouldbe treated as most malefic.

5. If Saturn is onnected with the maraka planets Saturnshould be cpnsidered as the greatest malefic. The samerule applies to the nodes.

6. Rahu posited in Scorpio or Capricorn becomes a greatmalefic. This is one view. According to Parasar the maincondition is that Scorpio or Capricorn should be thelagna also and Rahu posited in lagna.

7. Gulika is regarded as the maha maraka.

8. If there are many maraka planets thene will be illnessduring their najor and minor periods and the sixth lordbeomes the decisi\re factor in catrsing death.

Page 46: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Inflicting Planets 47

T?ansit

Transits offer their results only when the relevant dasaindicates a particular event. The planets are always movingand transiting some or the other sensitive points but death isnot caused because the maraka dasa does not coincide withthe time of transits. Transits speciS the periods more pre-cisely than the dasas or the yogas. To find out whether aparticular transit will prove fatal or not it is necessary tojudge the dasa running at the time of the transit to get theresult. If it is the maraka dasa running at the time of aparticular transit the result will be fatal otherwise the transitmay simply pasrq away or at the most bring about some com-paratively minor event like accidents or illnesses.

As there are nine planets so also the sages had a concept ofnine sub-planets. These sub-planets are non luminous bodiescalled the Up-grahas. They are Kala, Paridhi, Dhuma,Ardhyam, Yamkantak, Dh4nu, Gulika or Mandi, Vyatipataand Upketu. How their longitudes are calculated is givenbelow.

t o l n

1. Dhuma = longitude of Sun + 4. 13.20.002. Vyatipata = 12 signs - Dhuma3. Paridhi = 6signs +Vyatipata

4. Dhanu = 12 signs - Paridhi

5. Upketu = Dhanu + 0.16.40'00

For Gulika (for day borns)

Days duration is divided by 8 and multiplied by the multi-plier. Multipliers are on Sunday 7, Monday 6, Tuesday 5,Wednesday 4, Thursday 3, Friday 2, Saturday 1.

After calculating the Ishta kala longitude of Gulika isdetermined as the iagna.

Sunday 3, Mondav 2, Tuesday 1, Wednesday 7, Thursday6, Friday 5 and Saturday 4.

This process will give the Ishta and like lagna its longi-tude can be worked out.

Deternrining time of death from Tlansits

1. Add the longitudes of Gulika, Sun and Lagna. When Ju-piter in transit reaches the rasi and point arrived at asabove death takes place; or

2. When Jupiter trarrsits the trine to the rasi of the lord ofthe above rasi death takes place.

3. When Jupiter transits the rasi or its navamsa obtainedby deducting longitude of Yamakantaka from the longi-tude of the lagna lord.

Saturn's transit

1. lObtain rasi after deductingthe longitude of Saturn fromthat of G'ulika, Death takes place when Saturn reachesthe navamsa rasi of that rasi.

2. When Saturn transits the trine of the above rasi.

3. Add the longitudes of Dhuma, Vyatipata, Paridhi,Dhanu, and Upketu and obtain the rasi etc. When Sat-urn reaches that rasi or its drekkana death takes place.

4. When Saturn transits dwadasamsa of Gulika.

5. When Saturn transits the trines of rasi arrived at bythe total of the longitudes of 6th lord, 8th lord and 12thlord.

6. Jupiter transits the navamsa of Gulika.

7. Moon's transit of the rasi arrived at by adding up the lon-gitudes of Moon and Gulika.

8. Sun's transit of the rasi anived at by adding Lagna,

Moon and Gulika (Addition may be with rasis or withoutrasi; both ways Sun's transit of the part of the Zndiac isdangerous to life).

9. Jupiter transits the rasi or its trines anived at byadding up the longitudes of the lord of lagna, Sun andGulika.

10. Jupiter transits the rasi or its trine amived at bydeducting the longitudes of Yamakantak from thelagna.

11. Jupiter transits the rasi or its navzrmsa arrived at byadding up the longitudes of lagna, Saturn and Gulikaand multiplying it by four.

12. According to Prasna Marga Saturn's first roundof the zodiac brings death to alpayu, in the secondround to madhyamayu and in the 3rd to deerghayunatives.

The classical writers have given some other methodsof calculating the evil periods. For day borns thelongitudes of Sun and Saturn should be added and theconstellation determined. The death shall take place in theperiod of the constellation lord. For the night borns theconstellation should be determined by longitudes of Moonand Rahu.

Therc is also the system of calculating Spashta Jeeva,Spashta Deha and Spashta Mrityu. If the total of SpashtaJeeva and Spashta fhha exceeds Spashta Mrityu the nativeenjoys deerghayu, if the same is less the person has short life. The calculations of Spa^shtaJeeva, Spashta Deha and SpashtaMrityu are given below.

1. Spashta Jeeva = (Iong. of lagna x 5) + long. of Gulika.

2. Spashta Deha .= (long.of Moon x 8) + long. of Gulika.

3. Spashta Mrityu = O.ong. of Gulika x 7) + long. of Sun.

Some easier methods have also been outlined for deter-mining the death period.

If all the seven planets join together in transit in thelagna or rasi (Moon sign).

The same result follows if the above associationtakes place in the 7th rasi from Moon sign or ascendantfaelr.

3. If all the malefics join together in the 8th rasi from lagnaor Moon sign.

4. If one malefic transits Lagna sign or the Moon sign and' other malefics come to 6l8lL2 houses.

There are so many ways of determining the dasa ofplanets malefic to life. The question as to when weshould erpect the transit results to fructiff still remains tobe answered. The question has been replied by the sagesas under:

1. Sun starts giving results 5 days earlier than his transitto the next sign.

2. Moon does it 72 minutes earlier.

3. Mars does it 8 days earlier.

4. Mercury does it 7 days earlier. Venus also does thesame.

6. Jupiter does it 2 months earlier.

6. Saturn does it 6 months earlier.

7. Rahu and Ketu start doing it 3 months earlier.

It is now proposed to study the causes that bringabout death of the native. This is another way ofdetermining the longevity. The sages have thrown a floodof light on this aspect of the question. It is the 8thhouse that needs a comprehensive analytical study inthis respect. Amongst the causes there will be, interalia, the fatal diseases, unfortunate aeidents as well asthe psychological and sentimental factors leading to suicidesetc. About the diseases, etc. it is necessary to knowthe three humors and seven elements represented by theplanets. All the diseases in those days were the result ofimbalance of these humors. They are:

Page 50: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

of body.

Fire, bone.

Planets Humars

Sun Biles.

Phlegm, wind. Water, blood.Biles. Injury b3r arms,

Phlegm, wind. Hunger, semen.Wind. Thirst, nervous

system.

The rasi in the eighth house will represent the the part ofthe body of the l(ala Purusha and the planets their owneffects. The important parts of 8th house are the drekksna ofthe rasi falling in it and the nanamsaof the lagna. The planetsimportant in this respect are the lord of 8th house the occu-pa.nts and the planets aspecting the eighth house. If there isno occupant ofthe house, the eighth lord and the lord of2}nddrekkan of the lagna are to be taken into acrount.

1. The sign of the eighth house represents the part of thebody of l(ala Punrsha. The sayne part of the body of thenatire will be alfected. The trouble will be indicated bythe planet occupying the 8th house.

2. If there ane many planets occupying the house thestrongest of them will represent the trouble.

8. If many planets are strong in the house the trouble willbe complicated by the qualities of the planets concerned.

4. The strongest of the planets aspecting the eighth housecan also cause the disease.

5. If no planet aspects the house the rasi of the ZZnddrekkana or its lord would represent the fatal disease.

The main principles that emerge from the above ane:

MmnMars.

Mercury all three.Jupiter Phlegm.

VenusSaturn

Page 51: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

52 Judgeinent of LongeuitY

l. Occupants are stronger to cause illness'

2. The lord of house comes next'

3. Planets aspecting the house come next'

4. Lords and rasi of drekkana are the last to give diseases.

Thecausesofdeathcanbedeterminedbythedrekkanaof the rasi falling in the eighth house. Each has its own

peculiarities which are available in classics. They need not be

repeated here for want of sPace.

Similarly the troubles indicated by the Navamsa of the

rasi indicate the cause of death. Just by way of an example, if

the eighth house happens to be Scorpio or it contains the

r"rr-ri* of Scorpio tlie cause of death may be sprue, jaundice'

or injury by stone or arms.

If the occupant of the house is exalted there he will

give the troubles accrrrding to its nature. Sun in such position

iill "r.t*

death by fire, Moon by water, Mars by quarrels or

armed fight etc.

If the occupant happens to be exalted in the

house and also in the same navamsa the results will be

as under:-

Sun - Death due to some scandal or ill repute'

Y*") - Death by a quadruPed.MarsJ

Mercury - Death due to bad blood.

Jupiter - Death due to phlegmatic disease'

Venus - Death due to mouth disease.

Saturn - Death due to starvation.

If the planet is vargottam in the 8th house the cause of'death in the case of Sun is due to iron (it may be injury by iron

rods), Moon give it by quadrupeds, Mars denotes fall from

high place, Mercury from wind troubles, Jupiter by his own

hands (it may be suicide or accidental firing), Venus by leprosy and Saturn by cancer, tumour, injury etc.

Page 52: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Death Inflicting Plnnzts 53

If the planets are in inimical sign in the 8th house Sungives death due tci'impure blood, Moon by troubles of thebowels, Mars by the diseases of the sexual organs, and Saturnby a quadruped specially the horse.

The other details of the causes are as under:

1. If Mars is in the quadrant and Rahu in the ?th house thepersron hims€lf is the canse of death.

2. If malefics are in the kendras and lagna lord is sur-rounded by malefics the death is due to the native him-self.

Death oocurs due to the natire's own wife or husbandunder the following conditions

1. Ingna occupied by Sun and Saturn, Moon and Mars intlp 7th, and Venus in the Znd house.

2. Pisc€s is the asce, ndant. Sun and Moon o@upy it and themaletrlcs are in the 8th house.

8. Saturn and Mars in the ?th house and the ?th lord oocu-pies 6th 8th or lfth house.

4. Saturn and Mars in the 7th and Sun as the 7th lord irsposit€d in the 6th/8th/12th houee.

There are many other reasons of death. Some of them areas under:

The person dies in the prison if:

1. The lagna lord alongrrith malefic ocupies house of hisdebility and the 8th lord not oeupying or aspecting thehouse.

2. The lord.s of lagrra and 8th house are poeited in thehouses of their debility and aspected by those planetswho are in their own hous€s of debility.

8. The lords of lagns and 8th house are in their houses ofdebility and aspected by Rahu and legnesh notaspecting the ninth hotrse. The native in sudr acondition dies in air.

Page 53: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

64 Judgement of longeuitY

There are yogasr indicating the death of the native intoiletg by hangrng, in combats and armed strugles.

Similar conclusions about the place and mode of death, etc., can be drawn from the Padas of lagna and other houses. The rules are:

1. If the eighth house rasi from the lagna Pada and 7thhouse pada are movable signs the death takes place outof the house.

2. If the eighth house rasis from the lagna pada and 7thhouse pada are both fixed signs death takes place in thehouse.

3. If the eighth house rasi from the lagna pada and the 7thhouse pada are dual rasis the death may take place onthe way in the journey.

The determination of Pada rasis is erplained. If supposelagna is Aries and its lord Mars occupies the ninth house, thelagna pada will be the ninth house from Mars that is the fifthhouse of the horoscope. Similarly in the same case the 7th lordVenus, suppose, is posited in the 4th house which is 10th from?th house the pada of the 7th house would be tenth from 4th,that is, the first house. Thus pada of the ?th house is lagna. The pada calculation is the contribution of Jaimini. He hasfurther said that

1. If the third rasi from Pada navamsa rasi ie a movablesign the death of the perston is in an unnatural way.

2. If the 6th, rasis ftom the pada rasi or the navamsa rasiare movable signs death takes place in an unnatural wayand in a closed room.

3. If one of the rasis in the above case is movable and theother dual death takes place bebre the normal period.

4. If the third rasi from Pada rasi or Pada navamsa rasi isoccupied by or aspected by malefics the death takes placeat stony places.

6. Lf the eighth ra.si from lagna or atmakaraka and Pada

rasis or Pada navamsa rasis are occupied or aspected bythe malelics and particularly by Rahu death takee place

, by hanging.''6.

If th" 3rd rasi from the lagna or the atmakaraka happensto be Libra death is by lathis and if Leo is the rasi thedeath is by snake bite.

$:?. If Saturn is eighth from atmakaraka death is by takingpoison. If that is aspected by Mercury the death may befrom dianhoea"

There are many other ways in which Jaimini has tried tostudy the causes of death.

Chapter 5

Ashtaka Varga

Ashtaka Varga (A.V.) system of prediction is one of themost popular and easy way of prediction. It has achieved theadmiration of most a-strologers. They start all their predictionsand end them with it. Vraddha Yawan is all praise for it andhas gone to the extent of saying that he who knows the impor-tance of ashtaka.iarga is Go$. His famous lines are even todayrepeated with reverence.

Even Para-qara has refened to A.V. system as the part ofastrolory which deals with "Nischayatmic" prediction. Gener-ally the juCgements of horoscopes lead to general tendenciegavailable in it. For precise predictions A.V. system is one ofthe foremost systems.

The main fundamental principle of the system is itsassertion that no planet is eternally and universally good orbad. Even its placement in a particular bhava or house is notthe last word as to its competence to do good or bad uniformly.Planets have their natural mutual relationship. The relation-ship gets modified by their placement uis-a-uis each other. There are so many other factors that go into consideration atthe time of judgement and prediction. A.V. is the systemstudying actions and interactions of planets uis-o-uis theirmutual radical positions and also with regard to the lagna. Itis thus a composite study of the nature of results the nativemay expect. The planets taken special note of are the seven

Page 56: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

AshtahaVarga 57

planets namely Sun, Moon, Mars. Mercury Jupiter, Venusand Saturn, and one lagna. In all there are thus 8 chartsgrving the name to the system as Ashtaka Varga system.Ashta means eight.

The system deals with the nischayatmic aspect of astrol-ogr, that is, it talks in precise dates and timing of events. Theexact span of life irs the subject which is of great concern notonly to the native but also to the astroloprs who venturecertain predictions. A.V. system has an answer to such prob-lems also. Before going into the calculation of life span accord-ing to the system it is necessary to have a brief resume offundamentals.

Every planet has some benefic places. They are in rbspectof himself and in respect of other seven planets and the lagna.Briefly summarizing them they are:

l. Sun gives benefic points as unden

The following chart gives this position.

For the sake ofconvenience 8 charts are drawn and thebenefic points shown as small vertical lines. The charts on theleft hand shall show in horizontal columns the 12 rasis andthe names of planets in each rasi. On the top in vertical linesthe names of seven planets and the lagna glving beneficpoints.

In Sun's A.V. Sun grves benefic point.s at placesI,2,4,7,8,9,L0 and 11 from himself. He is posited in Leo. Hisplaces of benefic points are Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Aquarius,Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini. These places are marked bysmall verticdl lines under vertical column of Sun. Moon givesbenefic points at places 3,6,10 and 11. Moon is posited inCapricorn. His places would be Pisces, Gemini, Libra andScorpio. This chart and other charts can be prepared simi-larly. Different charts as prepared from the data are glvenbelow. The charts will give the total number of benefic pointsfor each planet and lagna separately. The last vertical linessha.ll indicate the benefic points in each rasi in each Ashtakn-varga which will be useful in future prcgess. They.shall haveto be subjected to two types ofreductions before they are readyfor the calcul, ation of the life span.

As has been said above figures in each A.V. have to be sub-jected to two progressive reductions. The two reductions areTrikona Sodhana and Ekadhipatya Sodhana and they followin the same order.

Thikona Sodhana or the Tlinal Reduetion

The rasis 1,5, and 9 are in trine to each other. The trinalgroup for Aries is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. For Taurus it isTaurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Similarly for Gemini the groupis Gemini, Libra and Aquarius and for Cancer it is Cancer,Scorpio and Piscres. Thus thene are four groups of trines. therules for trinal reductions or the Trikona Sodhana are:

1. If the number of lines in the same group is not the samethe lowest number should be deducted from the numberof each sign of the group. The remainder should be keptqgainst each sign. The sign containing tire least numberwill thus have zero.

2. If there is no figure in any of the signs of the group therewill be no reductions.

3. If there is zero in two signs of the group the figures in thethird sign will also be reduced to zero.

4. If the fig:res in all the trinal sign are the same all the

- figures shall be reduced to zero. The figures obtained after trinal reductions are further

subjected to another reduction called the EkadhipatyaSodhana or the reduction on accpunt of lordship. It may bestated that all the planets except Sun and Moon, are lords oftwo signs each. Mars holds sway over Aries and Scorpio,Venus over Taurus and Libra and Mercury over Gemini andVirgo. Similarly Jupiter is the lord of Sagittarius and Piscesand Saturn of Capricorn and Aquarius. These signs undergoreductions because of having the same lordship. There shallbe no reductions in Cancer and Leo. The rules of reductionsare:

1. If both signs of a planet are occtrpied there shall be noreductions after Trikona Sodhana.

2. If any of the two signs has zero after Trikona sodhanathere shall be no further reduction.

8. If one of the signs is occupied by planet (s) and the otheris not and the occrrpied sign has more number of lines

Page 69: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

70 Judgement of LongeuitY

than the unoccupied sign the occupied sign will retain itsnumber of lines but those of the unoccupied sign will bereduced to zero.

4. Ifone ofthe signs is occupied and the other is not and theoccupied one has less number of lines than the unoccu-pied one the number of the occupied sign will be repeatedat both places.

5. Ifboth the houses ofthe planet are unoccupied and bothhave equal number of lines their number will be reducedto zero.

6. If both the signs of a planet have equal number of linesand one of the signs is occupied by planet (s) the occupiedsign shall retain its numbers while the number of theunoccupied sign will be reduced to zero.

7. If both signs are unoccupied but have different numberof lines the sign having the lower figure shall have zerofor it and the sign having the higher number of linesshall have the the lower number.

8. Ekadhipatya Sodhana follows Trinal reductions and notthe vice versa.

To have a practical illustration of the two reductions it isnec€ssary to have the summary charts prepared of A.V. chartof each planet and the lagna. The first column shows the rasi, the second shows the figures of A.V., the third and fourthcolumns left blank to fill up figures after Trikona Sodhana(I.S.) and Ekadhipatya Sadhana G.S.)

In Sun's A.V. the figures in Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are3,4,4 respectively. Rule No. 1. applies here and the figuresehould be 0,1,1. In the Taurus group the figures are 5,5 and 1'Aeording to rule I they should b 4,4 and 0. In the group ofC'emini the figures are 6,3,4. They should be 3,0. and 1. In thelast group they are 3,5 and 5. They should be 0,2 and 2'

For Ekadhipatya Soclhana, Aries and Scorpio are the signs6f Mars. Both signs are occupied but one of them containszero. There will therefore be no further reduction after Tri-kona Sodhana. !'igures shall be repeated. Taurus and Libraare signs ofVenus, and one ofthem has zero. There shall be nofurther reduction. Mercury's signg are Gemini and Virgo. Both of them hav'e numbers. The occupied sign Virgo has morethan the numbers of the unoccupied sign' Rule 3 applies.

The treatment of rasis and of planets so far has been thesame. No weightage has been given on any account to any of

.these two important fiactors. Before finally computing the lifespan these factors have to be taken into acount. The two

important factors indicated above ar,e called the planetaryfiactors and the zodiacal factors. These fiactors remain constantin each case.

Sodhya Pinda of each planet indicates the groes span oflife granted by the planets or lagna. There are two methods ofconrrcrting the sodhya pindas into time span. One is that eachsodhya pinda has to be multiplied thrice as under:

Sun's Sodhya Pinda is 178

L78 178 178x3 xB x90

634 594 3560

(months) (days) (ghatis)

44 yrs 17 months 69 days+ 6 months ?/l daye 20 ghatie

= 46 yrs, 1 months 23 days,20 ghatis.

The same can also be worked out by multiplying theeodhya pinda by 7127. The prcduci will give the number ofyears. This is the easier method. The periods of differentplanets would be Sun 46.L5, Moon 36.04, Mars 24.89; Mercury42.52, Jupiter 56.00, Venus 31.37, Saturn 50.30 and lagna86.81years.

Aaording to Sambhu Hora this period should be reducedag under:

l. If it ie less than 2il it should be arepted.

2. If it is more than 27 but less tban 54 thenZl shorrlr' Ldeducted from it.

3. If it is mone than 54 but lees than 81 then 54 should bededucted from it.

4. If it ig more than 81 but less than 108 then deduct 8lfrom lt.

This process is called the mandal sodhana and the resultis the mandalayu. The revised figures after mandal sodhanaare as under.

9.04 years Venus 4.37 years

24.89 years Saturn 23.30 years

15.52 years Lagna 9.81years

The above are the gross periods contributed by eachplanet and lagna towards the longevity of the native. This hasfurther to be subjected to Harana Samskaras or thereductions.

1. If there are more than one planet in any rasi each ofthern will suffer the reduction by half of the span contrib-uted by it.

Here there is some difference of opinion. There are somewho say that each planet should be subjected to reduc-tions whereas there are others who say that only thestrongest of them will suffer the reduction. Devshal con'tributes to the former view. The author of Brahma-yamala holds the later view. We also agree with theformer view that the reduction should be tnade from each

' planet's contributions.

2. If the planet is in his natural enemy's sign he will lose1/3rd of his mandalayu

3. If the planet is in his sign of debility he loses half of hismandalayu.

4. If the planet is combust his mandalayu should be halved;Venus and Saturn are exceptions to the rule.

5. If a planet suffers in graha yuddha (planetary war) onethird must be deducted.

6. Chakrardha Reductions

Following reductions are required if the planet is positedin the visible half of the zodiac. The houses from 7th to12th house constitute the visible half of the zodiac.

7. If Sun or Moon are of unusual appearance (as in eclipse)one third of the mandalayu should be deducted.

In Brahmayamala the author says that this reductionshould be made if Sun or Moon are associated withRahu or Ketu in any rasi. We accept what Brahma_' yamala says.

N.B. If the same planet suffers more than one reductionsthe highest reduction should be applied.

Kalidas system which has been explained elsewhere'

Though the A.V. system has been able to predict m9."! 9fthe evenis of life with a precision, it cannot be a reliable

method of determining the life span of the individual' Many

astrologers are adopting this method for the purpose' It is dif-

ficult to assume that the results are always correct to some

reasonable degree of accurary

As has been said elsewhere there are 32 methods of

calculation of longevity. The A.V. method is most popular

with the astrologJrs. The question is whether this method

can be adopted universally in all cases. The old seers

and masterJof the science have never certified to the utility

of any one method in all cases. Before adopting any

one method it is required to judge the horoscope very'

carefully and one or the other method to be adopted depends

upon the circumstances indicated by the birth chart' The

circumstances under which the Bhinnayu (longevity through

individual A.V. of planets and lagna) is to be resorted to

are given below.

1. If the 10th house is oeupied by both malefics and

benefics. This view is supported in the Devasala Jataka

also.

2. If Moon occupies a Panaphara or Apoklima house with

another planet.

3. If Mars happens to be strong.

The above are the three circumstances under which the

Bhinnayu has to be calculated according to the A'V'S' of

planet.

After determining the longevity the next question that

arises is the chronologr of thg periods of the planets. They are

not to run according to the Vimsottari, Astottari or any other

dasa system. According to Acharya Mukund the order to be

followed is (1) Lagna (2) Venus (3) Mercury, (4) Sun, (5) Mars(6) Moon (7) Jupiter and (8) Saturn.

According to some other acharyas (masters) the periods

will follow in the order of Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Mars,Mercury, Moon and Lagna.

Page 80: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Ashtaha Varga 81

There is another view. Relative strength of Sun, Moon andlagna should be judged. The strongest of the three will be thefirst dasa lord and the period obtained in the A.V. of thatplanet or the lagna will run first. Next in order would be theperiods of those who happen to be posited in the quadrantsfrcm the frst dasa lord. Next in order would be the periods ofthose planets who are posited in the Panaphara houses andlast to follow are the planets posited in the Apoklimas.

In case there ane mone than one planet in any particularcategory the precedence can be determined on the basis oftheir strength. This classification of priority has been given inthe celebrated Sambhu Hora. Readers may have their ownchoice. Dr. Suresh Chandra Mishra supports the orders laiddown in the Sambhu Hora.

Other Methods of Aytrdaya

Badarayrna's method through horarXr s5zetem

- This is the "y"!*

of detemining the longevity throughItopry astrologr. The basis is that tnJ rztn hoise rrom tagnaindicates the past span; the lagna the present and the 2ndhouse the future span. For this purpose Maharishi Badaray-ana has specified the gunnkas or the multipliers of eachplanet. They are Sun 5, Moon 21, Mars 14, Mereury 9, Jupiter8, Venus 3 and Saturn 11.

As uzual the nirayana lagna is determined for the time

"i9 pl* of the question, and a chart erected. The longitude

of the lagna is reduc€d to minutes or seconds as the case maybe. The Paramayu of human beings is taken as 120yrs. and bdays. The longitude of the lagna reduced to minutes/wpnds ismultiplied by the Paramayu and divided by 21600 or by 21600x 60 if the lagna has been reduced to se@nds. This gives themadhyama;ru of the native in years and months etc.-

Next step is to identig the l2th lord and his multipliers. If, suppose, the lagna is Dhanu the l2th from it *o.rU U.Sorpio whose lord is IVIars. The madhyamayu has to be multi-plied by the gunakas of the 12th lord and divided by theParanaytr. The quotient is ignored and the remaindJr de-dueted from the Paramayu.

Titd step is to judge the present age of the querent; andthe figure nearest to the approximate age of thJquerent, asjudged, ehould be accepted. Such errcnt i,g nery rare. In case

Page 82: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Other Methods of Ayurdaya 83

the figures do not come any where near the estimated age, the4th step is necessary.

The Paramayu is divided into 3 equal parts of 40 yearseach. The three divisions may be taken as the three stages oflife. If the querent belonp to 40 years or near about thefigures may be adjusted by t 3 years. This should go on till theestimated age of the querent is reached. If the querent isbetween 40 and 80 the difference should be adjusted by (J 9and ifthe age happens to be above 80 the adjustment shouldbe (-d 6 years. This would be past span of life.

The last step is to deduct the madhyamayu from Par-amayu and the balance multiplied by the multiplier of the lordof 2nd house. The product divided by the Paramayu gives usthe future span of life. Futune span + the past span is the totalepan of life of the native.

There are instructions as to when the lagna etc., should betaken into consideration. If the lagna is strong the calcula-tions should be made from lagna; otherwise this should bedone from Sun or the strongest planet in the horary chart.

An example would make it clear. Time of query 15.34I.S.T. Date 27-8-1991, Place Delhi. Lagna for the epoch Dhanu15.28. Sun - Leo 10.01 Moon in Pisces, Mars in Virgo, Merc.(R), Jupiter and Venus in Leo, Saturn in Capricorn and Rahuin Dhanu.

Step No. I

Lagna 15328 minutes. Paramayu reduced to days is 43205days.

15328 x 43205 = 662246240

662246240 + 21600 = Remainder 11840 and quotient30659. In other words 85 yrs 1 month 8 days. (hours ignored)

Step No.2

Lagna is Dhanu. Its 12th rasi will be Smrpio whose lord isMars and whose multiplier is 14.

Madhyayu x multiplier of Mars i Paramayu.

Page 83: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

84 Judgem,ent of Longeuity

(85-1-8) x 14 = 1191 yrs 5 Month 22 days + 49205= Remainder is 40087 days = L11yrs 4 month 7 days.

(120.0-5) - (111'4'7) = 8'7-28

Here we get two figures namely

LLL-4-7 and 8-7-28

The age of the querent is either ILL-4--7 days or 8-7-28days. Suppose the age of the querent at the time of askingthe question is roughly 65 years. His age is not nearer toany of the two figures. Since the querent is between 40 and80 years we may start doinp a 9 years. As the apparentap is much less we will p on reducing by 9. After deducting5 times 9 we come to the figure of 66 yrs 4 months and 7 days.Hence 66 yrs 4 months and 7 days may be taken as the pastspan of life.

Step No.3

Deduct madhyamayu from the Paramayu. Second lord inthe o<ample will be Saturn, whose multiplier is 11. Thebalance of Paramayu and madhyamayu is multiplied by11 and divided by Paramayu. The result is the future spanof life.

(120-0-5) - (85-1-8) = 34-L0-27(34-L0-27) x 11 = 383 years 11 month 27 days + (120'05)

= 3 yrs. 2 months, 1.2 days.

This means that the querent will survive 3yrs, 2 monthsand 12 days more from the date of the question that is upto29th October 1994.

Rasmika5rurdaya

This is one of the methods of calculating the longevity; Each planet is supposed to have some fixed rasmis or rays andit is on the basis of these rasmis that the grant of the planet ofthe span of life is calculated. After calculating the ayu on thebasis of these rasmis, suitable adjustments in the grant aremade according to the circumstances of the planet and thusthe net gant is oltained.

Page 84: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Other Methods of AYuri,oYo 85

, It may also be clarified here that the number of rasmis

of each planet given below are when the planet is in.his

o.*-o"it"ha po-ition or at his highest position of exaltation'

il; Gi;ion^ or the planets is rar_ety available and this

;r*itio" of all the plan"i" at one and the same time is just like

a dodo. They are generally at the intermittent positions' Some

of tfr"- may Ue heading towards the point of their. deep

debility while others -uy U" reaching their points of-highest

exaltaiions. In such circirmstances the ra.smis are calculated

by the rule of three or proportionately'

The first step is to obtain the Nirayan positiorr of

the planets and deduct from this longitude the longitude of

the ^highest

exaltation of the planet concerned' If this

differeice is less than 6 rasis it should further be deducted

from 12 rasis. If the difference of the longitudes is already

morne than 6 rasis there is no need for further deductions' The

result obtained, after deduction or without deduction from 12

rasis as the case may be, should be converted into degtees and

rninutes, etc., and multiplied by the rasmi of that planet' The

total number of degrees will give the number of days granted

by the planet, ani minutes, etc', the part of the 9ry' A"

elampt" will make it clear. Suppo'se the longitude of Sun is

11-4.i5. Sun's degree of highest exaltation is 10 degrees Aries'

(11.4.15)-(0.10.0)=L0-24,|5 'Thisdi f ferenceisalreadymorethan 6 rasis. Therefore there will be no further deduction from

12 rasis. on conversion of the difference in degrees and

minutes etc. we get 324.15. Sun's rasmi is 10. Multiplyingg24.l5by 10 the product is 3242.30' Herc3242 is total number

of compiete days and 30 minutes the fraction of the day'

This can conveniently be converted into years, months and

days etc. 9242 + 30 = 108 months and 2 days or 9 years and

2 days. 30 minutes are equal to 30 ghatis because one degree

is equal to one day and each degree has 60 minutes and each

aay OO ghatis. Hence 30 minutes are equal to half a day or

30 ghatis.

In another hypothetical case, suppo€e Sun's longitude is

4 - g.Ll. Here deducting 0-10.00 from Sun's longitude the

balance is 3-23.15. This is less than six signs. This has to be

Page 85: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

86 Judgement of Longeuity

deducted from 12 signs. The result is g-6.4b or 246.4b.This multiplied by 10 rasrnis yields a product of 2467 .B0.]F,ere2467 are the number of days whicli can be converted intoyears, months and days etc. This is called the madhyamRasmikayu.

The rasmis of each planet when at his highest exaltatio'are:

_Sun 10, Moon g, Mars 5, Mercury b, Jupiter Z, Venus g,and Saturn 5. After calculating the madhyam rasmikayuthe Harana and Bharana Sanskaras start. Harar," *""ir"peduction and bharana means increase. Bharanas have tobe done firlt.

Bharanas

1. If the planet is retrograde the madhyam ayu should bedoubled.

2. If the planet is in his rasi of exartation the period shourdbe doubled.

3. If the planet is in his Adhi mitra's rasi (in the rasi of, great friend) the period should be doubled.

The term Adhi mitra indicates that the temporalrelationships have to be taken into consideration.

- Ilt!" same planet has to get more than one bharanas onlythe highest bharana has to be done.

Harana Samskara

l. If the planet is in the last phase of his retrogressionthere will be no increase in his period. on the oth-er handthere will be a decrease of f/gth period. Here the lastphase of retrogression has not been specified. The lastphase should be treated as the last degree of retrogres-sion from where the planet will become margi or in directmotion.

2. I{ t!,: planet is in his natural enemy's rasi he will lose., 1/12th part of his grant.

Page 86: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Other Methods of Ayurdaya 87

8. Astangata Harana

If the planet is combust he loses half of his madhyamayuperiod. This rule does not apply to Venus and Saturn.

Note: The reductions have to be applied to madhyamayu.

A practical illustration is necessar5l to explain the above.Example horoscope is as under:

1. Jupiter is retrograde. Rule I applies.

2. Saturn is exalted. Rule 2 applies.

3. Venus is in Virgo the house of Mercury who is his natu-ral friend as well as his temporal friend and thus his in-timate friend. Rule No. 3 applies.

4. Saturn is also likewise in his intimate friend's house. This is also the rasi of Saturn's exaltation. Rules 2 and Bapply. As two rules apply he will get the benefit of one ofthem only. He gets double his madhyamayu period.

Thus Saturn, Jupiter and Venus get the double of theirmadhyamayu.

The net period granted by the planets is 58 years,3 months, 9 days, 59 gh. 20 vig.

It has been said elsewhere that the Pindayu has 12 vari-ations. Likewise, the Rasmikayu method has 4 variations. Here is another method of calculations.

In the 2nd method there is slight variation though themethod is almost the same. The rasmis of each planet in thisczrse are different. Each planet in his Paramochcha positiong_ets the following rasmis. Sun 16, Moon 20 Mars 1, Mercury g,Jupiter 8 Venus 9 and Saturn 25.

For illustration the same example as taken above for thecalculation of longevity may be taken here.

Sun's Contribution

The difference between the longitude of the planet andthat of his exaltation is 6-3-16 or 183.ld

183.16 x 16 = 2932.16. Converted into years etc.= 8 yrs I month, 22 days and 8.84 hours.

Moons Porlod l5 yrs 9 months.

Page 89: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Mars 7 months, 7 daYs and 5.28 hrs'

Mercury 7 years, 8 months, 19 days and 11.52 hrs.

Jupiter 7 years, l month and 26 daYs.

Venus 4 years, 7 months, 22 days and 13.68 hrs.

Saturn 24 years, 1 month and 5 daYs.

Bharana remain the same. Hence as earlier the periods of

Jupiter, Venus and Saturn will be twice.

In Haranas there is one more harana and that is

chakrardha reductions in addition to the reductions pre-

scribed in the first systern. There are four planets in thewestern horizon from the lagna. They are Jupiter, Moon,

Mars and Venus. Mars alone is a malefic. Rates of reduction

as explained in Pindayttrdaya should be effected. The result

after the adjustment of Bharanas and haranas will be the net

contribution of planet to the native.

NakshatraJru

This method of calculating the longevity should not be

confused with the Nakshatrayu method of Kalidas explainedelsewhere. As in Rasmikayu method, there are gunakas in

this method also. There they were called the Rasmis. Here

they are called the gunakas or the multipliers. There Rahu

and Ketu were not included amongst the planets and as such

the grant of periods by them was out of question' .llere they

are treated just like other planets. They have their rnultipliersand they do grant periods of longevity. It may also be said here

that the multipliers of the planets and two nodes are the same

as their respective periods in terms of years and the order of

the periods is also the same as in Vimsottari system.

The multipliers of Sun are 6, Moon 10, Mars 7 Mercury 17,

Jupiter 16, Venus 20, Rahu 18, Ketu 7 and Saturn L9' These

multipliers are applicable only when the planets concernedare at their highest exaltation point. To explain the process

the example taken in the calculation of Rasmikayu will serve

our purpose here. The details are reproduced here for the sake

of convenience.

Page 90: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Other Methods of .Ayudarya 91

Before we proceed with the exercise it may be necessary tosay a few words about Rahu and l(etu known as nodes ofMoon. They are shadowy planets and have not been grantedany lordship of any of the rasis much less their places ofexaltation. The later writers have granted them both thedignities. They are the lords of 2 rasis each and have theirpoinls of exaltation and debilitation as well. According tothese writers Rahu owns cancer and capricorn and is exalted' in Virgo 21 degrees. Sintilarly, Ketu is supposed to hold hissway over Aries and is exalted in Pisces 21 degrees. In theexercise rheir points of exaltation will be reckoned the same asmentioned here.

Following rules are to be followed in this method.

1. Longitudes of the planets should be Nirayana ones.

2. Deduct the planets' highest point of e:raltation from thelongitude of the planet.

3. If the balance is more than 6 rasis the same may be ac-cepted. If it is less than 6 rasis it should be deducted from12 rasis, and this balance should be retained.

4. The balance at 3 above should be reduced to degrees, minutes and seconds and multiplied by planetrs multi-plier. The product would be the madhyamayu of thenative in days. The minutes indicate the part of the daybecause 60 minutes make one degree and 60 ghatis makeone day.

There are no bharana samskaras or the increase in thegrants of longevity by the planets. All the haranas are how_ever applicable here. They are:

2. Satrukshetra Harana

The planet loses one third of its grant if he is posited inthe house of his natural enemy. Mars and planets in

retrograde motion are exemPted.

3. Astangata Harana

The combust planet loses half of its grant. This does notapply to Saturn and Venus.

4. KrurodayaHarana

This is the reduction on account of ttre affliction of lagna

by the presence of the malefic there. There is no harana

if the malefic occupying the lagna happens to be the

lagnesh.

If there are rnore than one malefics in the lagna theone nearest the cusp will get the reduction. If Rahu or

Ketu alone are posited in the lagna there will be no

reduction. The reduction will not apply when the maleficplanet i;r lagna is aspected by a benefic. For the quantum

of reduction please refer to the rules given underPindayu.

Note: If the sarne planet is subjected to more than one

reduction the one requiring highest reduction will be

applied.

Nakshatra A5rurdaya (Kalidasa)

Every planet grants a term of life to the native by virtue ofhis occupation of certain place in the zodiac. f}riS place is con-sidered in terms of the nakshatras and their padas. In thissystem the steps ofworking are as under:

1. Find out the nakshatra and the pada the planet is in.

2. Determine the nakshatras the planet has crossed andcount it from Aswini nakshatra (both included).

obtained at 2 above by 3.Multiply the remainder by 4.

4. Add the figure retained at 3 to the number of padas at Labove.

This is the number of years granted by the planet to thenative.

5. Find out the duration of time taken by the planet incrossing the particular nakshatra he was in at the timeof birth. The difference between the time of entry andexit will grve the information. This is cailed thePramana.

6. Determine the time taken by the planet to travel throughthe particular pada of the nakshatra from the time ofbirth of the native. The difference between the time ofbirth and the time of exit will give the information. Thisis called lchcha.

?. Convert the time of Pramana and lchcha into Vighatis.

8. Multiply lchcha vighatis by 12 and divide the product bythe Prarnana vighatis. This gives the number of monthsin decimals which can be converted into months, daysghatis and vighatis etc.

9. Add to this the number of years obtained at 4 above.

The total is the gross period granted by the planet.

Note: It is to be noted that the longitudes of planet harrcnot to be taken into consideration.

An example will e:rplain the above steps. Take the hypo-

thetical case of the natilrc born on 6-5-1991 at 10 ghatis and 15vighatis.

In the first instance the time of entry and exit of eachplanet from the nakshatra may be noted here from a reliablepandranga.

Sun enters Bharani 4th Pada on 8-5-91 at 9 ghatis and48 vigh. Sun entered Bharani 3rd pada on 4-5-91 and 4th.padaof Bharani on 8-5-91. This means that he was traversingthe 3rd pada of Bharani at the time of birtfi.

1. Bharani nakshatra 3rd Pada.

2. Planet has crossed only Aswini nakshatra which is onenakshatra.

3. The figure at 2 above on division by 3 will yield no quo-tient and remainder 1. This when multiplied by 4 gives 4.

4. Two padas of Bharani have been crossed by the planet.4 + 2 = 6. Thus 6 years is the period of longevity granted '

the longevity granted by lagna remains to be worked out'

The peiiod granted by the lagna is calculated a little

differently. Here the sigrrs are ignored. The longitudp

after ignlring the signs is converted into seconds, which

when li.rid"J Uy 1000 gives the months and fraction of

granted to the native is 54 yrs, 0 months 12 days, 14 hours

After determining the gross longevity Harana Samskaras

are done. The rules are:

1. When the planet is in the visible half that is in housesL2, LL,10, 9, 8 or 7 the period ofthat planet undergoes a

Jaimini Ayurdaya

J udgement of l-ongeuity

It is the method of determining the longevity most reliedupon and popular amonpt the astrologers both new and oldand masters and neophytes alike.

In the first place the longevity is determined in generalterms. Life as usual has been divided in three classes on thebasis of span or period of longevity. The three classes are (1)

the alpayu (2) the madhyamayu and (3) the deerghayu. Forthe determination of these classes there are three groups offacbors. The group offactors are:

1. The lagna and the 8th lord.

2. The Moon anil the ascendant lord

3. The Asrcndant lord and the hora lagna.

To avoid any confusion it may be stated at the outset thatthe hora lagna here is different from the hora of the lagna ac-counted for in the shadabalas or the six sources of planetarystrength. Hora lagna here may better be called the Kaal Horalagna to differentiate it from its name-sake

While the above three groups are important pillars uponwhich the edifice of longevity rests, it is to be admitted thatthe considerations from Moon and Saturn have been left out.Moon represents the mind and forms an important factor forlife. Saturn is the significator of longevity or the ayushkaraka. The great Maharishi Parasara has attached great importanceto this factor. The subject here under discussion is Jaiminis5rstem as applicable to longevity, and as such it is proposed tofollow the rules framed in the system without any modifica-tion etc. The subject has been discussed in chapter 2 and 3 ofhis Sutras.

In fact Jaimini, perhaps, never wrote full treatise onthe subject. Whatever has come from him is in the shapeof sutras or hints which rnay be a good mechanism forcommitting something to memory and recalling it atthe proper time rather than explaining the subject. Thesesutras are too brief to explain anything. The other misfortune

Page 104: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Otlur Methods of Ayuflaya 105

for the later generation has also been that no authoritative

translations or commentaries are available of all that he haswritten except the two chapters refened to above.

Apart from the above three groups he has also referredto the study of ?th and 8th lords and the atmakarakas'Judgement of longevity should also be made from thesefactors. Thus two more groups have been added which are(1) the lords of 7th and 8th houses and (2) the atmakarakaand the lords of ?th and 8th houses. He has said furtherthat the 2nd and 8th lords from the janma lagna havingany relationship with the atmakaraka planet indicate mediumspan. Relationship here means cunjunction, associationor aspect.

Jaimini has also talked of the strength of planets. Hereagain the strength of planets is not the same as arrived atafter the calculation of the six sources of strength or shad-abalas. In chapter 2 he says qRrc: IrM: that is, the strengthof planet lies in the strength of the rasi he is posited in. Inother words the strength of rasis has to be judged for theassessment of weaknesses or otherwise of the planets. For theassessment ofthe strenglh ofrasi he says:

1. Rasi occupied by planets is stronger than the one notoccupied.

2. Rasi occupied by more number of planets is strongerthan the rasi occupied by less number of planets.

9. If two or mone rasis halre equal number of planets theone that offers some dignity to the occupants is strongerthan the one which does not. The dignity of the planethere means the dignity of being in his own sign, Moolatrikona or the sign of his e:raltation. All this reguires nofurther elaboration, explanation or discussion. It issimple and easy to understand.

Even after taking so nuch care in the determination oflongevity he has introdued one more element. The element isof the revision of the class of life determined by the above con-siderations. Sometimes the alpayu becomes the madhyayuand sometimes it is vic€ versa. Before proeeding further it

Page 105: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

would be necessary to explain and erect the Kaala Hora lagnabecause that rvould be an important factor in the judgernent ofthe class of life of the native.

Kaala Hora Lagna or the K.H.L.

As in casting'the horoscope so also in the KHL we areconcerned with the Ishta Kaala.Ishta kaala is the local meantime elapsed between the previous sun rise and the time ofbirth. This period is provided in ghatis and vighatis etc. Oneghati consists of 60 vighatis and.\l2 ghati make one hour. Inother words one ghati has 24 minutes and one vighati 24seconds. If the time of birth is given in terms of LS.T. the samehas to be converted into time after sunrise.

The Ishta ghatis may be multiplied by 2 and dividedby 5. The result would be hours, minutes and seconds. The number of hours show the number of rasis. If thenumber of hours is more than 12 hours the rasis would alsobe more than 12. In such cases 12 should be deducted toobtain the number of rasis. The minutes arrived at shouldbe divided by 2 to obtain the degrees. The remainder maybe converted into minutes. Thus the time in hours andminutes has been converted into rasis, degrees and minutesetc. If the lagna is an even sign these converted rasis, degrees etc. have to be added to the longitude of the lagna. In case the lagna happens to be an odd rasi the additionhas to be made to the longitude of Sun. The result ineach case is the K.H.L.

For the sake of explanation let the Ishta Kaala be44 ghatis and 25 vighatis and lagna Z signs, lg degrees and35 minutes. By multiplying the Ishta Kaala by 2 the productis 88 ghatis and 50 vighatis. Dividing this by b the quotientis 17 which is the number of rasis and 3 as remainder.60 vighatis make one ghati. Hence by multiplying B by 60and adding 50 to the product there is 230 which whendivided by 5 yields 46 minutes. By dividing 46 by 2 ttrequotient is 23 which is the number of degrees. The numberof degrees is 23. and zero minutes. Because number ofrasis obtained is more than 12, deduct 12 from it. The result

Page 106: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

'Other

Methods of AYudaYa 10?

5 is the number of signs. Thus the full figure is 5 signs and

23 minutes. In the hypothetical case above the lagna is

Vrischika which is the 8th rasi, an even one. Hence longitude

of lagna + 5 signs and 23 minutes becomes the K.H'L' Had

the lagna been an odd sign the 5 signs etc. would have

been added to the longitude of Sun.

Now reverting to the subject of lonpvity the first step

would be to determine the span of life from the three factors

refened to aborre, namelY.

1. Lagna and 8th lord from the lagna'

2. Moon sign and the ascendant lord.

g. Ascdt. lord and the K.H.L.

The rules of determination of the class of life are:

Long Life

1. If both the factors are in movable sign.

2. If any one of them is in a fixed and the other in a

dual rasi.

Medium life

1. Both in dual rasi.

2. If any one of them is in movable and the other in a

fixed rasi.

Short life

1. Both in fxed rasis

2. One in movable and the other in dual rasi.

The class of life has to be judged from all the threeconsiderations. If the result from all the three considerationis the same it is a welcome feature and should be acceptedfor further treatment. If the class of life determined by twoof the factors is the same and different from the thirdhctor, that determined by two factors should be accepted.

Page 107: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

108 Judgernent of Longeuity

In case the classes are different from each factor the oneindicated by the group of K.H.L. should be accepted.

The rules for the determination of the class from the lordsof 7th and 8th houses from lagna and from the atmakarakaplanet and the 7th and 8th lords are given below. An atmakar-aka planet is he who has the highest number of degrees irre-spective of the rasis. Sign or the rasi has no importance in theidentification of the atmakaraka.

?th and 8th lords

1. The stronger of the two lords by virtue of his occupationof a Kendra house indicates a long life.

2. The stronger of the two lords by virtue of his occupying aPanaphara house gives medium life.

8. Stronger of the two lords by virtue of his occupation of anapoklima house indicates a short life.

The same position holds good if consider€d from the lordsof the 7th and 8th houses and the atmakaraka planet.

1. Occupation ofa kendra house by the strongest indicatesa long life.

2. Occupation ofPanapharas house by the strongest ofthethree indicates a medium life.

3. Occupation of an apoklima house by the strongest of thethree planets shows a short life.

After carefully determining the span of life from all theconsidbrations there still remain certain circumstances whichcall for the revision of the cless either downwards or upwards.The_medium life may become the short life or the the long life,as the case may be. The upward revision is brought aUout inthe following ciranmstances.

1. If Jupiter is posited in the lagna or the Tth houseassociated or conjoined with benefisr or aspectedby benefics (Mere presen€ of Jupiter without beneficaspect or association is not an enough condition toalter the cl+ss).

Page 108: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Other Method.s of AYudaYa 109

2. When the ascendant or the descendant has benefic plan'

ets on both sides.

g. When the atmakaraka or the ?th therefrom has benefic

planets on both sides.

4.. When the benefic planets are in trine from the atmakar'

aka or the 7th from it.

5. When the benefic planets configurate in the lagna or the

descendant.

6. When thebenefics are in trine from the ascendant or the

descendant.

The considerations that cause a downward revision are ast

under:

1. If Saturn is one of the factors determining the class.

2. If Saturn is posited in the ra.si of his debilitation or in

that of the enemy duly associated with or aspected by a

malefic. This reduction will not be brought about if

Saturn is posited in his own rasi or rasi of exaltation or

, if there is only an aspect of malefic (s) over him or is

only associated with malefic (s).

'3. When Saturn is posited in kendrasthana from Jupiter or

if any of these places ib aspected by Saturn alongwithMars.

4. If Moon is posited in the gth or 12th house from the as-eendant.

5. If Moon is posited in the 8th house from the atmakaraka.

6. If Moon is posited in the 12th house or the 7th from lagna, or from the atmaksrek4.

?. If Saturn is posited in the lagna or rasi or the rasi of theatmakaraka.

8. If Saturn is posited in 6/8/12th house from the lagna orthe janma rasi (Moon sign) or the sign of the atmakar-aka.

Page 109: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

110 Judgem.e nt of Inngeuity

9. If Saturn is conjoined with the lagna lord or the lord ofthe 7th house.

10. If lagna or the 7th houee are hemmed between the male-fics.

11. If the malefics are posited in the bth/ftly'llth or grdhouse from the lagna.

12. If malefics have the same position as above fnom the at-makaraka.

13. If atmakaraka is hemmed between the malefics.

The above are the causesr which call for a downward revi-sion. As the whole edifice of Jaimini system stands on thequestion of the karakas or the three groups of factors theabove factors are important only when they ane involved inthe determination of longevity. Further it is important to notethat merely one factor of the so urany referred to above is notan enough reason for the reduction. There should be manyreasnns calling for the revision. They should at least be morethan one.

A practical e:rample is needed to oplain the above:

Ghatis 8/52,Lagru- 8-18.12; Sun 8-26.48; Moon 6 -7.29,Mars 6-12.18, Mercury &28.09, Jupiter 9-8.99; Venus

. 9-0.10, Saturn 6-20.58 Rahu 11-16.5? Ketu b-16.1?.

For calculation of H.ILL.

Ghatb (3/52x2\/5 = 1Hr.38 minutes.

Corrverting into rasi and degree it yields 1 rasi 16 degreesand 30 minutes. Here lagna is an odd eign. Here added to thelongitude of Sun the result is (8-20.49) + (l-16.90)

= 10 - 18.13

Three groups of factors indicate three different spans oflife. In such cases the span indicated by K.H.L. should beacepted. Henoe medium life is aeepted.

Here there is no case for upward rnevision. As regardsthe downward revision there are two reasons calling for it.Refer conditions 3 and 7. Saturn alongwith l\ltrars is placed inthe 10th house, a kendrasthana fnom Jupiter and Saturn'isalso posited in rasi that is the Moon sign. Under thesecircumstanes the native shall enjoy short life. One thing thatneeds special consideration is that Saturn has not beentaken into consideration for the determination of longevity. He is neither the lagna lord nor the 7th lord in the e:rample. As such no revision on the above account is called for. Theatmakaraka has also not been taken into acount here. Thespan therefore irs final. It is madhyamaJru or the age between82 and 64 years.

For calculating the longevity in mathematical terms itis necessary first to determine as to how many of thethree groups have contributed to the present determination. Ifthey are all the three groups the factors involved are 6because each group aonsists of 2 factors. In the present casethe determination of medium life is based on one group only, narnely the group of Ascdt lord and K.H.L. Thus there areonly two factors entering the determination. The average oftheir bhogramsas has to be calculated. The bhogamsas anethe number of degrees and minutes etc., a planet or lagna orK.H.L. has yet to pass to come out of the sign. Hypothetically,if the lagna irs 20 degrees in any sign it has yet to pass10 degrees. The bhogramsa of lagna is therefore 10 degrees. In other words the longitude, dropping the sign, should bededucted ftom 30 degrees.

average is 19.04'

After ascertaining the average in the above manner it isrequired to be multiplied by the gunakas or the multipliersgiven by Jaimini for deerghayu, madhya5ru and alpayu. Thegunaka for madhyamayu is 32. Hence 19.04 multiplied by 32yield 61,0.8. For conversion into days they are further multi-plied by 12. The result is 7321.36 days. Minutes become partof the day. Converting 7321days into years and months etc.we get 20 years, 4 months and 1.36 days. This period ha.s to beadded to the khanda ofthe respective classes. These khandasare the lowest limit of the respective clabs. The alpayu's lowestpoint is zero because it extends from zero to 32 years. Themadhyayu starts from 32 years. Its khanda is 32. Thedeerghayu starts from 64 years. Hene for deerghayu or longlife the khanda is 64. In the case under reference the'spandetermined is medium. The khanda for medium span'is 32years. Hence the above 20 yr. 4 months and 1.36 days are to beadded to 32. The result is 52 years, 4 months and 1.36 days. This is the span of life to be enjoyed by the native.

The above calculations have been done on the basis of 3classes of life namely long, medium and short life. Certainastrologers have further sub-divided each of them into threeclasses, and determined their upper limits. The divisionsmade by Sh. Durga Prasad are:

Higher

lnng life 120 yrs.Medium life 80 yrs.

He has also determined the khandas and gunakas of eachsub class as well as the system/method oftheir use in the sanneway as Jaimini has done.

Chapter 7

Pindayurdaya andAmsa5rurrdaya

There are many more methods of calculation of

longevity than the methods dealt with in the earlier

chapter. Pindayurdaya, also known as the Grahadatta

Pindayurdaya Amsayurdaya or Amsakayurdaya are

important.

Pindayurdaya

The basic concept of the system is that the planets grant

longevity according to their position in the zodiac. The period

granted by these planets is subjected to various reductions on

account of various causes. There are three schools regarding

the grant of periods by the planets and four subdivisions

""gt"dittg the harana sanskaras or the reduction of periods'

This constitutes 12 schools.

Grant of Periods bY the Planets

Yavanacharya, Manitha and Parasara hold the view that

the planets Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury' Jupiter Venus and

Saturn when in Paramochcha posit ion or their

position of highest exaltation grant a period of

L9,25,15,12,75,21 and 20 years respectively' According to

Jeevasarma the maximum number of years granted by the

planet in the same position is one-seventh of the maximum

ienggfr of life envisaged in the Vimsottari system that is 120

years and 5 days. Thus each planet according to Jeevasarmagrants an equal period of 17 years, 1 month, 22 days and

Page 114: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

8 ghatis 34.3 vighatis, or in decimal terms' l7 '14484 years'

Th"e third school is H by Badarayana' According to him each

planet gives one seventh of 100 years that is 14'28 years ap-

iio*i-It"ry. Thus there are three schools of thought about

ihe grant ofPlanetary Periods'

As there are lhree schools regarding the qllt of

peri, ods by the planets so there are four different

schools regarding the haranas also' One process called

the Neechardhaharan believes that the planet at the point of

J"Lifirv loses one fratf of its period granted at the point of

highest exaltation. The other, the Neechabhava process'

maintains that the entire period granted by the planet "! i!"

exaltation vanishes if the same planet reaches the point ofits

a""f a"Uifity or depression' The third process known as Kri'

taharana process allows proportionate -reductions' According

i" irr" lasfprocess kno*n-asihe Akritaharan proc€ss there is

no reductions what-so'ever in the grants of the planets on this

account, that is, at their points of debility'

Thus in all there are 12 variations of Pindayir method'

The method of Parasara with Neechardhaharana process is

"*lf"irrua here. It is not possible to- include all the twelve

.r"ri.tiorr" in this limited- space' The periods granted by

the planets at their points of ni4tot exaltations are Sun

Harana and 4. Krurodaya Harana.

Chakrapatha Harana

This is also called the Chakrardha Harana. In anybirth chart the lagna or the ascendant is called the eastand the 7th house the west of the zodiac. One half ofthe zodiac is therefore the houses 1 to 6 and the other halfis from houses seven to twelve. Planets suffer reductionwhen they are in the second half of the zodiac. Thereduction is maximum near the lagna that is house 12and minimum in the farthest from it that is the 7th house. Here also the reductir:ns are effected according to thenature of the planet. .A benefic planet loses half of what amalefic planet loses in the same position. However, regardingthese reductions, if there are more than one planet in anyhouse all of them would not suffer this reduction. Only thestrongest of them will tre subjected to this reduction. This isaocording to Satyacharya which is the view acceptable to all.The rates ofreductions are as under:

Planet 12th Llth lhh 9th 8th 7th

Malefic Full Il2 Llg LlA Lll Ll6

Benefic Lt2 u4 Ll6 u8 Llr0 LlLz

Satnrkshetra Harana

This reduction is made in the case of planets occupyingthe house of their natural enemies. The loss on this account isone-third of the planetary grant. This reduction is not appliedto all planets. Planets who are in retrograde motion and Mars, even when it is in direct motion, are exempted from this re-duction. The word used in the text, is vakra which has beeninterpreted as Mars by some and as planet in retrogrademotion by others. Varahamihira holds the former view andBadarayana and Gargacharya hold the later view. In practice, however, both Mars and the planets in retrograde motion areexempted from this reduction.

Page 116: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Pi nd.ay urd.ay a and Amsny urday a 117

Astangata Harana

The planet is supposed to be asta or combust whenhe reaches within certain limits from Sun. This limitis both forward as well as backward. At this point theplanet disappears from the view because his light isobscured by the light of Sun. In this position the planetloses U2 of its contribution. The limits of aombustionare different for each planet. They are 1? for Moon, 17"for lMars, 14" for Mercuryll' for Jupiter, 10 for Venus and 5'for Saturn.

Saturn and Venus are exempted from this.

I(rurodaya Harana

This reduction is carried out when the malefic planetoc.cupies the lagna. If the malefic planet is aspected by abenefic planet the amount of this reduction will be halved. There are certain exemptions to this rule also.

1. If the lagna lord happens to be a malefic and he occupiesthe lagna there will be no reductions.

2. If Rahu or Ketu alone occrrpy the lagna there is noreduction on account of Krurodaya Harana.

3. If there are more than one malefic planet occupying thelagna the reductions will be in the periods of the planetnearest the lagna.

Here it may be clarified that Sun, Mars and Saturn arethe only planets taken as malefics. WaningMoon and afflictedMercury are not taken to be the malefic planets.

As regards the quantum of reduction on this accountSaravali has given the same. The reduction ie obtainedby multiplying the total number of years already obtainedby the number of navamsas of the rising sign that hasrisen above the horizon and dividing the product by 108which are the total number of navamsas of the zodiac.

The above procedure is aU regarding the calcrrlation

of periods granted by the planets. The lagna, likeany planet, also contributes to the period of longevityof native. Its procedure is, however, a little different.

Lagna A5mrvarshas or the period glanted byLagna

Varahamihira says that every navamsa of a rasi givesone year because there are 9 navamsas in a sign, the periodgranted by one sign is 9 years. In olher words each degree ofthe sign gives 0.3 years of longevity. Manitha and some othershold the view that number of years grven by lagna is thenumber of signs between the first point of Aries and the pointof lagna rising. If in a hypothetical case the lagna is 10 de-grees of Virgo the native gets 5 years upto Leo and 4 monthsup 10 degrees of Virgo. According to Saravali the method ofVarahamihira should be followed if the lord of rising navamsais stronger than the lord of the rising sign. The other methodshould be followed if the case is otherwise.

An example will explain the case.

Process

1. Convert the nirayana longitude to degrees etc.

2. Deduct the longitude of the highest exaltation from thelongitude of the planet.

3. If the difference at 2 above is less than 18S it should bededucted from 360 to make it more than 180. If thedifference is more than 18O already no further deduction

"' is required.

4. Multiply the full term of the planet with the figure at 3above and divide the product by 36O

The result thus obtained would be the sphuta ayurvarshas

Sun: Inngitude is 135.1? and its e>raltation points is 10'

Hence 360 - 125.17 = 234.43

Sun grants a period of 19 years' Therefore

Saturn 170.02 - 200.00 = 330.02 (already more than 18O)330.02 x 20/360 = 18.34 sphuta ayurvarshas'

Note: All operations upto the stage of deductiol h1*been done in terms of degrees etc. Before multiplying the

difference the minutes should be converted into fractionof degrees.

The same results can be obtained in other way also' Eachplanet loses/gains half of its period in 180' Sun's longitude is

Now the grant of Lagna has to be calculated' The long'

tude of lagna is 4-5.g2. As it is second na\ramsa of Leo it falls

in Taurus. The lord is Venus. Venus is posited in the house of

his intirnate friend Mercury. The lagna is l,eo and its lord sunis occupying his o'arn sign. It is aspected by Jupiter. Thereisno malefic aspect on it. Thus lagnesh Sun is stronger thanNavarnsa lord Venus. Varahamihira's method should beadopted here. Every navamsa gives one year or the rasi givesnine years. Working on the basis of the grant of period Uy tfrelagna is I x 5.32130 = 1.66 years.

This can as well be calculated in the following manner.

One navamsa is 3.20 or 200 minutes. The navamsaspassed by the lagna is 3.32120A = 1.66 years. The position ofgrant of longevity by planets and lagna is as under:

This is Satyacharya's method dealt with by parasara also. This process in certain cases has to be varied into what isknown as Prakramanugata method oi the method in generaluse. These two methods are further divided into tw- partsknown as Kritawiddhika and Akritwiddhika methods. In ttreone method the increase in the grant of periods known asBharana Samskaras is allowed. In the otlier this is not al-lowed. Maharishi Parasara allows the increase in the periods. The arnsakayurdaya thus has four varieties or four methods.I{ow f;ar this method is useful is subject to difference of opin-ions- Rhattotpala considers this method as the only comectmethod. Varahamihira concurs with this. saravali and Mani-tha do approve of this method but do not attach much iinpor_tance to it. sreepati and satyacharya have also dealt with ihismethod.

According to Satyacharya, the nirayana longitudes areconverted into minutes and divided by 200 because each na-vamsa is of 200 minutes or 3.20. The quotient will indicate thenumber of navamsas passed by the planet from the first pointof Aries. This quotient is divided bt 12. The remainder willgive the grant of the planet in years and the remainder leftafter- dividing by 200 gives the fraction of the year. This maybest be explained by an example. Suppose the longitude of Sunis 243.15. This when converted i'to minutes is eq-ual to 14b9bnrinutes. This divided by 200 yierds a quotienl of 72'andremainder 195. Dividing the quotient by 12 the remainder iszero. In other words sun in this case grants a period of 19b/200 years only. These are the sphuta ay,urr".ihus of Sun inthis case. These sphuta a5rurvarshas of planets are subjectedto both bharana and harana samskaras. The method foiowedhere is that of Parasara.

Bharana Samskaras or the fnerease of thePeriods

1. If the planet is exartecl or is in retrograde motion hisJ aJrurvarshas should be multiplied by B.2. The ayrrvarshas shourd be doubled if the pranet is in his

rasioccupied by him in the rasi chart'

3. If rules 1 and 2 both are applicable to any of the planets

rule L will operate. Rule 2 will not be applied'

4. If aplanet is retrogtade in his sign- of exaltation applica-

tion of rule 1 shallle once only' This applies to the appli'

cation of rule 2 also.

Reductions or llarana Sarnskara

l. Chakrardha Harana

The planet loses part of his grant of life to the native if he

, happens to be in the visiblehalf of the horizon' Lagna is

the Ascendant. The visible half of the horizon covers the

houses 12th, 11th, 10th, gth, 8th and ?th houses' The

loss ofthe term is according to the nearness ofthe house

to the ascendant, The reduction also varies according to

the nature ofthe planet concerned' The reductions on ac-

count of the nature of the planet and the house he is

posited in are as under.

2. Satrukshetra Harana

The planet in an inimical house (the house whose lord is

the enemy of the planet) brinp about the reduction of

1/3 of its grant of life. Satrukshetra harana follows the

dftuhtpJfta harana. The planet in retrogrademotion is

exempt'from this reduction. It may be stated here that

the word used in classical texts is "vakra" which means

the planet in retrograde motion as well as Mars, whether'

in direct or retrograde motion. There is therefore some

Page 122: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Pi ndoyurdoy a and Amsay urdorya 123

difference of opinion in effecting this reduction. Thereare those who feel that only Mars is exempted, and notall planets. In practice, however, this reduction is nei'ther applied to Mars nor to planets in retrogression'

3. Astangata Harana or Reduction due to Combus-tion

Sun is the most powerful planet in the solar system andthe planet that neaches near Sun during transit loses itspower to some extent. Sun ol'ershadows him. This isealled combustion. As a result of combustion the planetloses one half of its grant of longevity. This rule does notapply to Venus and Saturn. The reasons of the exceptionane not known. This deduction is to be done according tothe grant that remains after the Chakrapatha andSatrukshetra haranas.

The degrees of combustion of different planets have al-ready been given under Pindayu method and thereforeneed not be repeated here.

4. Krurndaya llar:ana or Reduction on Account ofmalefic in lagna

No reductions are made on this account from the plane'tary grant of lonpvity in the Amsayu method. This re'duction is done only in the Pindayu method'

All the above operations can well be understood by an ex'ample.

Lagna alrurnzarchas

The method of calculation is the same as explained in thePindayu method earlier. The first thing to be judged iswhether lagna lord isetronger than the lagna navamsa lord.Ifthst be so we adoptVarahamihira. If it is otherwise the proce'dure to be followed is tbat glven by Parasara.

The lagna is Libra. Its lord is Venus who is posited in thehouse of his debility. Navansa lagna is C'emini whce lord isMercury in the house of his enemy lUars but receiving thebenefic aspect of Jupiter. Hence Mercury can be said to bebetter placed thanVenus. In guch cases the method prescribedby Varahamihira has to be taken.

Page 127: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

L28 Judgentent of Longeuity

The lagna gives one year for each navamsa passed. Thelongitude of lagna is 6 - 29.48. In other words it has passed gnavannsas. Hence 8 full year. Eighth navamsa runs upto26.40, for the balance 3.10 the amount can be calculated byrule of 3 which oomes to 0.94years. Total contribution of lagnawill be 8.94 years.

Thus the total period of longevity grantd by planets andthe lagna is 56.56 + 8.94 years = 65.b or 6b years, 6 months.

Chapter I

Novel Method ofDetemination of Longevity

This is a new method of determination of longevity' This

is new in the senFie that I have not found it in any classical

work. It has been given a separate treatment in a separate

chapter because it is a simple and easy method which needs

to be e:rperimented upon and verified as to \Yhat extent it can

be relied upon and whether it can be universally applied'

Sh. G.S. Rama Murthi in his book Span of Life published in

19?1 (second edition) has referred to it as being practised

by one family of a,strologers in the South. The great merit

oi ttt* method is that it is too simple. If analysed it will

be found that it gives importance, besides the janma lagna

and Chandra lagna, to Aroodha lagna and Pak lagna'

Taking each lagna as the a-scendant it treats four important

lords of the chart viz. the first, third, eighth and tenth' First

lord directly represents the native, the third denotes his

prowess, the eighth his ageAife/ayush and the tenth his

karmasthana as well as the house of retiremerrt. The special

feature of the method is that he does not regard eighth

house as a bad house totally. Arly way, the method needs to

be practised and experimented upon and the results obtained

therefrom to be verified from facts. Here there are no ifs

and buts. There is no consideration as to whether Sun

is strong or Moon or the lagua.

Page 129: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

130 Judgement of Longeuity

To start with, we may prepare the chart of birth anddetermine the ascendant, Chandra lagna, paka lagna andAroodha lagna and judge the position of the lords of lst, 3rd,8th and tenth houses in each case. The readers are expecied tobe well acquainted with all the above four types of lagnas. Thefirst two that is the ascendant or Janma lagna and Chandralagna or the rasi, as it is called, are very common. Every bodyknows how to calculate them. A little explanation about thePaka and Aroodha lagnas may be necessary here. The pakalagna is the sign occupied by the lord of ascendant. If theascendant is Libra and its lord Venus occupies Capricorn, thePaka lagna would be Capricorn. The ascendant lord is hereposited in the fourth house from asoendant, count four signsfrom Paka lagna which is Aries. Aries will be the Aroodtralagna. From each lagna find out the lst, 3rti, 8th and 10thlords and deal with them as under.

1. If the concerned lord is in Kendra or Trikona house fromthat lagna allot one full mark to the planet.

2. If the concerned lord is neither in Kendra nor in Trikonahouses but is in his own sign or the sign of exaltation orMoola Trikona or posited in 3rd, or 8th house from thatlagna award Ll2 mark to him.

8. If the concerned lord is a malelic planet posited inupachaya houses allot half a mark to him.

4. lf a planet getting full mark be in the house of hisdebility or in his enemy's camp his mark must be reducedto half.

5. If the concerned lord has evil association or is combusthis mark has to be redued to half.

6. Add up all the marks of all planets in the exercise andmultiply it by 6.25. The product would be the lifie span ofthe native in years and part of the year which can beconverted into months and days etc.

An e:rample will do best to explain the above procedure. The child born on 4-5-1990 has the following horusoope.

The process to be followed is as under:

I From the lagna or the ascendant

(a) Lagna lord is Jupiter posited in kendra ftom lagna. Hegets full mark. The relevant house is that of Mercurywho is an enemy of Jupiter. The one full mark is rcduc€dto half.

(b) The third lord is Venus posited in the ascendant it€elf. He gets one full mark. He is in enemy's camp because Ju-piter is his enemy. At the snme time he is exalted. Thenet result is one full mark.

(c) Eighth lord is again Venus. He gets one full mark a€t ex-plained above.

(d) Tenth lord is Jupiter who gets half a mark as e:plainedabove.

Chapter I

Mathematical Methods andTheir Applicability

We have discussed and explained with practical illustra-tions various methods of calculating the life span of the individual. Now it is time to consider their utility and applicabil-rty.By utility we mean here whether the results obtained bythese methods have any relevance to fact; that is do theycorrespond to the period of life actually enjoyed by the native? The comments of old sages and reports of later eminent as-trologers and research workers ane our best guides in thisrespect.

1. Varahamihir in Brihat Jataka has said that all these cal-

. cula.tions apply only to ordinaqr personst. The sages andsaints born in this world are much above the influencesof these planets. They can and do outlive even the maxi-mum human life span granted by these planets.

2. All these calculations apply only to normal conditions oflife. They cannot be applied to abnormal conditions likethe disturbed social or political conditions.

If these be the limitations it would be an exercise infutility to attempt any calanlations, much less the strenuousmathematical ones. While some attempt maybe made to judge

the future greatness of the native by a careful and intelligentstudy of various yogas pr*ent in the birth chart there isabsolutely nothing to indicate about the general oonditions oflife.

Further, we do not know what the words "extra-ordinar5lperson" signiff. Is it to mean only the sages and saints or to

Page 133: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

134 Judgement of InngeuitY

include also the great persons like Einstein, Hitler, Jawahar-lal Nehru and the like who influenced the world to the extentof moulding its future in their own special ways. Under suchcircumstances it appears proper to girc up any attempt atmathematical calculations. Our indulgence in them may oth'erwise be only a sour@ of indoor amusements.

The reports of eminent astrologers and researth workersalso serve as guiding lights to us. Dr. Suresh Chandra Misrahas commented thaf it is difficult to say ( ffiiQr{ ) or'thatis it" in this respect. Pandit Gofresh Kumar Ojha in one of hisc-ommentaries has said that during his long experience he hasnot found the results of any of the methods corresponding tofiacts.

Under such circumstances it may not be difftcult toconclude that indulgence in mathematical pursuits is asheer waste of time and enerry. Before discarding themlike this a little deeper study of the subject is called for. Here comes the question why did the sages devise so manymethods if they are not to serve any useful purpo€e.Maharishi Parasara, who can be called the father of astrologr, has included all thme rnethods in his work the BrihatHora Sastra. Varahamihir has simply conditioned the resultsbut not discarded them outright. Jaimini, another luminaryin the horizon, has added one more method to so manymethods. There must be some big reason behind theinventions cf these methods.

A little more careful study would reveal that oursages meant by ayu or life only the life granted by the variousplanets who govern all that happens and is likely to happenin the terrqqtrial world. The life granted by these planetsetc. was called the yogajayu or the span of life arrived atby study of various combinations of the planets in the chart. They start their study of the problem from the rrery birthof the native. They studied deeply even the moment of birth.Certain timings of birth were declared inauspicious bythem because they were not considered helpful to the ontinu-ance of life. Gandarishtas etc. are the points under referencein this context.

Page 134: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Mathematical Methads an"d Their Applicability 135

Jt is also significant to note that their study at the earlieststages of life was not of the factors prnmoting life but of thosethat hinder these prospects. They were concerned more withthe prospects of life than the er.ents of life. They harre advisedus not to indulge in any predictions unless the span of life wasn<sured. They studied first the arishtas; then the arishtabhangas; and then ultimately the various combinations ofplanets indicating various spans of life and the factors thatnullify their effiects. LiG span was their first concern. In thisconcern they wanted to be doubly sure of their conclusions. They tried to check them in more than one ways. Theyinterpreted the various yogas present in the horosmpe. Nextthey studied the same thing the other way. They studiedthe possible fiactors disturbing the life span. Study of thecauses of death was one step in that direction, identificationof the death inllicting planets was another. It was onlyafter study ofthese death inllicting planets that they devisedsome mathematical ways to check up their oonclusiong. Thus it is quite evident that the mathematical methods werenot supposed to be any independent source sf informationbut merely as supplementary to the study of the yogajayu. This gets a conlirmation from two facts. The one is thatthese methcds are to be applied to certain conditions onlywhich gave them a reading of life span. ?he methodsby calculations were required only to confirm their determina-tions. The other irs the fact that the determination of lifespan was the pre-condition of the application of one or theother method. It would thus appear that the methods, ifthey fail, are not to be blanred as such. They have only towork within specific limitations as secondary or tertiaryagents to detennine the life span.

For the applications of various methode they harrcdown certain conditions. The onditions under whichBhinnayu of the Ashtqkq Varga ehould be adopte<l

2. If Moon with some planet occupies any of the Panapharaor Apokli.ma houses.

3. If Mars is strong in the chart.

4. if lt{oon is weak but other planets are strong in the birthchart.

Likewise for the application of Samudaya method of ayur'daya of the Ashtaka Varga there are two specific conditionslaid down by thern. They are:

. 1. Moon with some other planets should occupy a quadrantand other weak planets should be in the panaphara and/or apoklima houses.

2. Saturn the ayush karaka should be strc.rng'

Misrayu like wise should be atternpted if:

L. Moorr is strong and other planets are also strrcng.

' 2. There is no planet in the kendra and Moon is strong.

It would be observed from the above that Ashtaka Vargamethod is linked particularly with the position of Moon. Thereis no consideration other than Moon. The calculations in theashtaka varga method are not likely to serve any useful pur-pose in conditions different from those laid down above. Thosewho are using the method in all and sundry curses are commit'ting grave error. It would be no wonder if they fail to arrive ata conect judgement. The a-qhtakavarga system is perhapsdevised to collaborate with the judgement of the life span onthe basis of Moon's strength and l\{oon's position. For condi-tions other than the position of l\{oon and his stren6$h othermei.hbds have been devised. The.y should lrc adopted. It wasnot the intention of the sages to devise any one self-containedmethod which could universally be applied.

For Pindayu, Arnsakayu and Nisargayu following arc theconditions under which one or the other method should bepractised. These methods are based on the comparativestrength and weaknesses of Moon, Sun and lagna. These arethe three important pillars upon which the life of the native

Page 136: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Mathernatical Methods and Their fuplicability 137

rests. Lagna is like the fulcrum. The strength of lagna is a

must for a long life. Likewise Sun stands for physical vitality.'He is the positive and primal fount of life. He offers power of

resistance. '

Pindayu method is to be applied if Sun is strong in the

chart. It should attain the dignity of being in his own house or

in the house of his exaltation or moola trikona. It gets

strengbh when he is in trine to other strong planets. If thereare Mahapurusha yogas the Pindayu should be attempted.

For the Amsakayu it is the position of lagna that is takeninto consideration. Lagna should be strong. For the purtrPsesof strength of any house or bhava including the lagna, thq lordby his occupation or even aspect grants sulficient strength. The aspect of benefic planets also makes the lagna strong'When lagna is strong the Amsakayu method should be fol-lowed. Nisargayu method is to be followed if Moon is strong inthe chart. Thus the three methods, are linked with threedifferent flactors - Sun, Moon and Lagna. There is no otherconsideration in selecting this or that method.

The other three methods are Rasmikayurdaya, Naksha-trayu and Navamsa5ru methods. The position of the ayushkaraka Saturn, the benefic Jupiter and Mercury are the im-portant factors. The Rasmikayr is to be attempted if Saturn isstronger than Mercury and Jupiter. Navamsayu is to be fol-lowed if Jupiter is strongand Nakshatrayu method if Mercuryis strong.

Just as there are specific rules for following any particularmethod of calculation so also there are rules for dasa of plan-ets etc. and their order of chronologl. The many dasasystems that are in vogue are not to be followed in theayurdaya system. Even the number of years under each dasasare different.

There are many dasas in vogue. Most popular amonptthem are the Vimsottari and Ashtottari system. They havefixed number of years allotted to each planet. They also havea fixed chronolory. There is no such fixed chronological orderor the number of years in the periods of any planet in any

Page 137: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

138 Jttd.gemcnt of Longevity

qrstem. Number of years etc. of each planet here is in accor-dance with the grant of longevity the planet has done.

In respect of the chronolory there are some differences ofopinion. There are some wh'believe that the order shouldcommence from sun. Next to follow are the periods of saturn,Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Mercury, Moon and lagna. Thene areothers who take it as lagna, V'enus Mercury, Sun, Mars Moon,Jupiter and Saturn. This is one of the easiest-s;retems. Inother words the order of the periods is fixed as ii is in anyother dasa system.

Some persons do not agre€ with the above order. Theirspretem is quite different from the above. According to themthe order is not fixed. Each case has to be dealt with i-ndepend-e1tly. The system is first to determine the strength of

"Uplanets_ and lagna. Next step is to compare the stlength ofSun, Moon and Lagna, who-so-ever is ihe strongest Io*ofirst in the order of dasa.s. If by any chance ali three areequally powerful the deciding factor would be the grant oflongevity by each of them. Who-so-ever has the long6st spanwill be crnsidered to be the strongest. In case the numbei ofyearsr is also the same the decision will rest upon the order inw-hich thel are spoken. The spoken order is Sin, Moon, Mars.\Iercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Lagna. Sun will ttrus bethe lst, Iord. whose periods will start. Next in order will be theplanets who are posited in the kendrasthan from the first dasalord. Next in order would be the planets in panaphara housesfrom the first dasa lord and last number will be of those whoare posited in the apoklima houses from the first dasa lord. Ifthere are more than one planets in any one category theirorder of precedence shali be decided it) on the- blsis ofstrength (2) on the basis ofthe longevity granted by them andlastly (3) on the basis of their rising inihe horizon The otderof planets and lagna has to be decided in each case on meritsin the light of the above guide lines.

The number of years for each of the planets would be thesame as the longevity granted by them.

Chapter 10

Aecidents and theUnfortunate Events

Accidents are one of the important and major factorsputting impediments and obstacles in the way of easy flowof life. They otten put an end to human life. They may beclassified in two categories. The one class is that whichaffects the native individually and the other where a groupof persons are involved collectively. The former type ofevents can be studied to some extent by the natal chart irtthe normal rvay. The accidents in the other group canrrotbe studied through the natal chart of the native becausethey relate to the society as a whole and the individr.lalconcerned is involved as a member of that society. It is thesecond type of accidents generally which put an end to indi-vidual lives and are a major cause bringing disrepute to thescience.

It may be stated here that there are two branchesof astrolory narnely the hora and samhitas. They are trvodifferent branches having differeni techniques of study. (Inthe case of natal ch.art it is the hora branch that is tlz.emetlznd. of study. The other branch that is the sarnhitacorrLes into play where the study of society or the country asa wh,ole form the subject m.atter of stud'y. Mundane orpolitical astrologt comes under the study of samhitas.) Theresults or conclusions arrived at with the aid of one cannotbe put to test and blamed as a result of the oonclusionsarrived at through the study of the other. The events likefiring on the mob, major air crashes and rail accidentscome under the study of samhitas. They relate to the social,

political and other forms of disturbances. The circumstancesof the individual do not remain normal and as suchneither the yogas nor the mathematical methods are likely torespond to them. If at all we wish to be greatly concernedwith our predictions about the native we may have to takesome extra precautions and make a comprehensive study.Even with all our care and pre-caution the success obtainedthrough the study of natar chart with the techniques ofhora are not likely to crown us with cent per cent sucess. The reason is that the individual forms a veryinsignificant part of society. He is quite negligible. witha view to bring home the point at issue one question isposed here. Somebody sits on the tea table to Ir"* som.tea. The tea served to him is too hot. The p€rson busy insome serious discussions just takes a sip. He will burn hisliqs an! the tongue and, may be, his ihroat may also beaffected. He will have pain and minor troubles also. Ifsomebody at that time says that the horoscope of thepersron did not give any indications about the burning ofhis lips or tongue or the throat will he be justified? s"uchevents can not be foretold from the native's chart.fra5na lagna may grve some indication. Despite all this itis always commendable to harre as deeper a study as possibleof the birth chart. In the case of the native also we mayperhaps find some indications about the social and other con-ditions which may affect him adversery. Elaborate rulesformed by the savants of astrologr have to be folrowed. whileundertaking such a comprehensive study we should have thejanma kundli, Navamsa and other Shodash \xarga charts, exact longitudes of planets and cusps and the exteniof ho'"o.Sun sign also has its own importance in such studies.

In the judgement of the relevant house we should judgethe house, its lord and also the karaka or the signirrca:torirthe event under study. The principle of tshavad bhavam, should also not be rost sight of- If foiinstance the question oflife is under judgement the eighth house from the eigthhouse thAt is the Brd house should atso be studied the sa;eway. The study of badhaka houses and their rords arso calrs for

Page 140: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

the same detailed study. In the judgement of hqusesthe strength of the house, its position with reference tothe placement of planets (it may be hemmed betweenmalefics), the various influences, benefic and malefic, upon it,their relevant strength, the position of house lord, his associa-tion with benefic'and malefic planets, his placement inthe malefic or benefic houses ane sone of the points whichneed particular attention. Here some personal experiences ofthe astrolopr at study needs to be made use of. No planetis uni'"ersaly good or bad. His nature should be considered inthe context of the affiairs under study. Eighth house is badwhen we consider it in connection with the affairs ofthe lagna, It is not bad when the affairs of tenth house areconcerned because it is l ith to the 10th. The eleventh houseis always a house of fulfillment of desires. Sixth hotse islikewise the ninth to tenth house and as such auspicious. Thefifth house is considered to be a very auspicious house. If thesame house is judged in the context of the seventh houseaffairs it will be helpful for the opposite party because house 5is 1lth to the 7th house. The same thinp can be said aboutthe planets.

While studying the houses and planets it is verynecessary to study the nature of both of them. Sun and Marsact differently when the matters about the marriage etc. areconcerned from that when they are concerned with othermatters. Jupiter alone may be a greattolerant but with his as-sociation with Mars he may become a fanatic in religiousmatters.

Normally the lord of the house is taken to be a very strongsignificator of the affairs of his houses. This is actually not so.The occupants are stronger planets than the lord of the house.Sornetimes the nodes occupying the houses of significatorhecome stronpr significator of the affairs than the sign lords.Jupiter and Venus the two great benefics are supposed to begreat malefics if they happen to occupy the maraka houses.'

The bhava karakas should normally be away from thehouse concerned as it is believed that karakas presence in the

Page 141: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

L42 Judgernent of Inngeaity

karaka bhava is not very helpful for the affaire of that house. There is however an exception to the general rure fior theayushkaraka Saturn. Ifit happens to be posited in the eighthhouse he is helpful.

The planets in the houses 10th to 4th show theireJfects directly and help the native in achievingthe results desired for. The planets in the other half ofthe cha* that is in the houses bth to gth show theirrnesults idirectly by removing the obstaclers and makingttrc atmoephere favourable for achieving the desiredobjectirrc.

The benefics in retrograde motion become more beneficsand the malefics in the same pcition become greater malefics.similarly as a rule the benefic retrograde lhnets in theirsigns of enaltation offer the fruits of debilitated planets andmalefics in the same position offer the ftuits of exalted plan-ets.

Ttrese are some of the general rules which ehould nel* beignored. In the case of longevity following points are of greatimportamce.

1. The 22nd drekkana fnrm the ascendant falls in theeighth house. This is one of the major sour€es of death.Likewise the 6th navarnsa is very important in the con-text.

?. The position of Gulik or Mandi and the rasis they ooeupyane of great importane.

8. Jhe eighth lord, the planets oeupying the eighthhouse, planets aspecting the eighth- house, lord! of22nd drekkana and of 64th navamsa should be studiedspecially. The bitter enemies of the gth lordand badbakadhipatis of the 8th house are important inrespect of the alfairs of the Bth house. Apart from thesignification of the planets their relative strength shouldbe etudied alongwith other factore.

Aceidents and the Unfottunate Euents 143

Timings of fnrctifi cations

For the timinp when we can expect the result promisedby the planets we harre to wait for major and minor periods. This is the well established rule of astrolory. In the considera-tion of the results some fundamental principles harre also to beborne in mind. Sometimes the same planet holds the rulershipof the houses which ane contradictory to each other. Saturncan be ruler of lagna as well as of the maraka house the 2ndhouse. Mars can also be the lagnesh as well as the 8th lord. Insuch cases their malefic and benefic nature of lordship givesthe mixed results. They are never off-set. TVhen the planet willgive bad results and when he will give good results wouldmostly depend upon the placement of other planets. Theplanet gives good results in the sub period of thoee planetswho arne well disposed to him and the amount of good or badwould depend in the same way according to the temporal

relationshipe. Snt. IndiraGandhi's horoscope mayhere be cited as an example. Here Saturn is the lord ofthe maraka house ?th andaleo the house of longevitythe 8th. He is posited in la-gna. Had he been strong hewould have killed the natircsoon. He is weak. Ivlrs.Gandhi continued her jour-ney of life for quite a long

time. Saturn's unlucky period start€d. He is eighth lord along-with his lordship of a maraka house. He therefore did not giveher a death blow and left the work to some other planet.Rahu is in a malefic house as regard.s the lagna. He is also6/8 to the major perid lord Saturn which is not a happy posi-tion. Hence in his minor period Rahu did the job of a marake-gha. She died in this period.

Often the question arises when we can e:pec{ the planetto give his results. The planet gives the result in his major orminor periods. The major periods are generally of very long

duration. The minimum period of dasa is that of sun which is

6 years which is too long a period to keep watching' This

p."ioa is shortened by the gochar or transit system' No planet

is stationary except for a small period when it changes from

direct motion to retrograde motion or vice versa, During the

transit the planei gives the result according to the rasi he

reaches from the lagna lord or Moon sign. Saturn remains in

a house for about two and a half year. JupiLer remains for

about 13 months. Thus his period of dasa ha-s been shortened

upto about 13 months. Sun remains in a rasi for a month'

Thus we have come to such a short period. If more precision is

needed we can take recourse to Sudarshan system which is

alg; a part of the Transit system. In the Sudarshan sSrstem

one year period is allotted to each rasi commencing from the

lagna. After 12 years the circle starts afresh. For the purposes

of prediction we can ascertain the age of the native and find

out which house of the horoscope is concerned with that year

of the native. The lord of the rasi gets prominence for that

year and for the events during this year. Results can be pre-

aict"a on the basis of the relationship of the year lord t'ith

other planets who will offer results in their transits of the

various malefrc and benefic houses reckoned from the year

lord planet. This planet should not be confused with the va'

rshesha or the year lord in the pnrgressed charts. To explain

the method Smt. Indira Gandhi's case can agEun be taken as

illustration. She was born in 1917 and died in L984 that is in

67th year. The rasi associated with this period is Capricorn.

Its lord Saturn is posited in the lagna. Fortunately or unfortu'

nately the period running at that time was of Saturn himself.Rahu and Saturn."" po"It"d in the house 6/8 from each other'This is a very. bad position. Saturn being the ayush karahaand Rahu being in an inauspicious position brought about thedeath of Smt. Indira Gandhi. Saturn came in the compart'ment of Moon. During the same period when Moon transitedSaturn's compartrnent of rasi the death occuned.

The compartments of each planet and lagrra are of equalunits in each rasi. Following are the comparlments of planetsip each rasi.

Epilogue

As has been said elsewhere there are 32 methods of calcu'lations of longevity. Many of them have been discussed andexplained here. Many more could have also been added but forwant of space. The question that arises here is "why so manymethods and which of them is more reliable and dependable atleast in majority of cases.

The questions urge us to go into the whole issue once moreand a little deeper for a reply. It is a fundamental question.Unless fundamentals are discu*sed the proper reply may notbe available.

'What is longevity''? It may be defined as the period be-tween birth and death or the life that the individual has beenallowed to Iive on this planet. Our ancestors did not look uponlongevity qs the period between the birth and death. Theytook it in the later sense. They meant by longevity the lifegranted by the planets. This is the basic difference in theapproach and provides eloquent answer to our question.

According to the sages life is the span granted by Provi'dence through the agency of celestial bodies, the planets. Thiscan easily be verified from the fact that they always talked ofyogajayu as ayusha and of no other ayusha. In fact the rvholeconcept of life was the span gtanted by the planets. For thecessation of life also they looked to the planets. The planets onone side indicated the prospects of life and on the other theprobability of its cessation. Each way it was for the planets torespond to the queslion. If that be the approach how couldmathematical methods have an independent identity. Ratherthey were supposed to serve the conclusions arrived at by thestudy of various permutations and combinations of the planetscalled the yogas.

It, is adrnitted that the basic concept of life was not mathe-matit:al. It rl-as plarretary. They could very well fx up some

Page 146: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Epilogue L47

norms of calculations. If Sun grants us life they could veryeasily say that Sun when in Leo or Aries or any other sign forthat matter gives this much of life and for each aspect of otherthinp they could prescribe suitable reductions or increase.Had this been done mathematical formulae and calculationscould have been criticised or applauded according to the meas-ures of failure or success. On the other hand what they didwas to assess the yogajayu from various angles and then themethods were utilised to corroborate the conclusions drawn onthe basis of their study of planets, their effects and resultingrirodifications. Their consideration was the yogajayu. If we failtoday in the correct estimation the failure is not the failure ofmathematical method but of their own conclusions of lifebased on planets.

The third and equally important factor is the way theylooked at yogajayu. Apart from the fair play of planets theyhad many other principles governing the extent of life. Theydivided the zodiac in 12 parts and each part in 2rrn naksha-tras. Even these 12 signs and the 22 nakshatras in them couldnot serve their purpose. The concept of janma lagna wasevolved. The rasi that rose in the east, without any considera-tion of planets, was given the top most importance and allother divisions of zodiac were considered in relation to thatpart of the zodiac. These 12 parts of the zodiac or the 27nakshatras were not considered as homogenus. The gan-darishtas got their birth. These gandarishtas were so mi-nutely treated by them that there came to be tithi gandas. After dividing the space they tiivided the time also. Some timewas considered as auspicious and some inauspicious. Thequestion of navamsa$ and drekkana were also given due im-portance.

The other fiactor that added dimensions to the problemwas the karakatwa.: er the significations granted to the plan-ets. These significattons were also two fold. One was the per-manent significa-tion as Saturn stands for ayu and Moon forthe mind. Besides thece ihetq ]?es some temporary significa-tion allotted to the plarret by virtUe of their lordship and occu-pation of the hous€ cr bhava. iit dny individual horosmpe.

Page 147: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Saturn if posited in the second bhava is supposed to work as

the maraka planet also. Thus karaka and maraka the twoportfolios quite opposite to each other were granted to thesame Saturn. They did not define when Saturn would act asmaraka and when as karaka of life.

They did not stop here. The concept of Sun, Moon and theatmakarakas alongwith lagna and the sign occupied by Moonwas also evolved. Out of the 12 houses some houses were iden-tified as evil and some as benefic. Houses 5 and 9 are alwaysauspicious and houses 3 6,8 and 12 evil'

After studyingall the sadhaka and badhaka factors that isthe fiactors that promote and put up a stop to life the sagescommenced another exercise. They had considered so far thevarious factors, yogas and arishtas, that were responsible forthe continuity of life. Now they looked at the problem fromanother angle. This was the study of purely deterring influ-ences on life. The one who has been born is sure to die. Deathis surer than anything else. If the planets bestowed life theymust also be responsible for taking it away or snatching itaway. In other words they tried to identify various causes ofdeath. Sickness is one. To determine the planet causing fatalillness they assigned some qualities to the planets. On thebasis of this assignment and comparative strength of planetsthey identified various diseases. The basis of illness in thosedays was the dis-balance of three humors. They studied sick-ness and tried to identiff the most serious of them as fatal.

There may be causes other than sickness. The punishmentawarded by the state for some reasions was also studied withreference to the seven planets, two nodes, lagna, and rasis etc. There could be deaths due to some unnatural walrs. The per-son may be killed by his friend. He may meet with an accident. These factors were also studied and estimates of life span wererevised by them.

It is true that every effect has a cause. The death mustalso have some cause although it may not be perceptible at themoment. What is to be done in such case? Whatever be thecauses there must be some planet responsible for it. The con-cept of death inflicting planets was evolved

Page 148: Judgement of Longevity by D P Saxena

Epilogue L49

Now comes the question of dasas. Let us suppose in ahypothetical case Mars is the marakesh, and the a;ru deter-mined is alpayu" We may also suppose that the balance dasaat birth is 18 years of Rahu. How to adjust these 18 years andwhy should he die in Rahu dasa when Sun and Moon havegranted him some span of life. Their dasa shall come at a verylate stage. It was with this end in view that they started a newsystem of dasas quite different from theVimsottari, Ashtottariand other systems. They decided the order of planets as re-gards periods etc.

All this system can be set at nought by the transits. Thusthere were more than one way to judge the sam-e question. This is not to plead that the sages committed some inexcus-.able blunder in having so many considerations and viewpoints of the same problem. Rather it is the other way round. They gave us wider perspectives, as they appeared in actuallife, to examine the question. They command respect andgratitude. Not-with-standing, the mathematical methods arebut poor vehicle to convey their concerns and cautions andpractical approach. We cannot blame the methods, but if atall, the sages fcr so many ways of examining the subject.Under these circumstances we have hardly any cause of griev-ance against the mathematical methods.

In their quest for truth the sages reached a stage wherethey had to admit some exceptional cases where no normalrules of life operate. Nothing of this world is applicable. Theyare the cases of highly evolved spiritual saints. The saints arenot subject to the commands of these planets. They, on theother hand, comrnand them. They are over and above theseelements who have to behave themselves so far as the ques-tion of these sages is concerned. The author in this respectmay like to go a step further. It is accepted that the planets donot crcmmand the sages. It has also to be accepted at the sametime that no astrolopr less evolved than these sages canpredict any thing mrrectly by any means. If at all he does, thecredit shall go to those sages who granted their grace to theastrologer to be able to predict something with some measuneof accuracy. This has been the personal experience of the

author that even in the case of ordinary pensons who are

devoted to God the astrologer less devoted than they will

never be able to give. correct prediction. In tsrihat Jataka this

truth has been acepted indirectly'

The above discussion n'ould clearly show that the mncept

of our longevity has nothing to do with-mathematical bias' It

that case we may apply the transit rules and find out when

the inauspicious transit takes place.

The author applies very simple rules' In the first place the

basis for all this is not the birth chart. It is his belief that birth

chart depicts the life as a whole. It gives only a birds' eye view

of it. The minor details are.certainly not available there. Thehorary astrologr with the sole purpose of answering thequestion of longevity is taken recourse to. A detailed chart forthe rnornent of jtrdgement is prepared showing the degrees ofthe cusps and the longitudes of'each planet. This takes hardlyten minutes. The sublord of ascendant cusp is examined. It ishis disposition which is the deciding factor.

1. If this sublord is posited in the star of the planet octupy-ing a badhaka or the marakasthana and if the sublordhirnself is also connected with houses 6l8lL2 the life ofthe native is very short from the tirne of the judgernent.

2. If this sub-lord of the ascendant cusp signifies both bene'fic and male{'rc houses the life rnay be taken'asmadhyamayu.

3. If the sublord is in the star of the planet situated inhouse ll5l9ll0 or owning these houses the life is a longlife.

After the assessment of longevity he calculntes whichplanet will have his dasa during that age and determinewhich are the maraka planets during that period of age. It isalso exatnined by progression u'hen the lagna, lagna lord andthe ayush karaka Saturn receive evil aspects' When the deathinflicting planets transit such sensitive poinLs death may takeplace. This narrows down considerably the period of the eventfrom the time of judgement. This process takes another 8-10'minutes. In general cases even this long exercise is not con-cid-ered necessary.

Here is one practical example where the horary chart wasnot prepared. The judgement was based purely on the ba-sis ofthe birth chart. To have correct results the birth chart shouldbe conectly prepared. In important cases the author preparesthe charts himself on such occasiors.

The native whose birth details are given on the next pagehad been ill for quite some time. The complications arose oneafter the other and a time came in 1987 when the closestrelatives started doubting efftcacy of any treatment. Theyconsulted rnany astroloprs who confirmed their worst fears'

Here it may be seen that the da-sa lord Venus is the ?thlord and bhukti lord Jupiter the 2nd lord. Both are marake-shas and hence even the prominent astrologers convenientlytold the relatives that the last time had oome.

The question for judgement was "life or death?" The firctthingto judge was the badhakasthana and the badhaka lord ofthe ascendant. The chart was prepared again with Krish-namurti aynarnsa.

Ascendant is Libra. Its badhakasthana is Lc'o. There is nooccupant of Leo. Sun, its lord is alone concerned with theaffairs of badhakasthana. Mars and Rahu are in the stars ofSun. ?hus Rahu, Mars and Sun are the worst malefics. As anode Rahu is most malefic. Being the period of Venus themain period of these plancts are yet to come. The earliest pe-riod would be of Sun. It woultl operate frorn 14-7-1994. Therewas no fear of the main periods of any of the three planets.About Venus whose period was in operation at the time of con-sultations he is the lagnesh as well as the 8th lord posited inthe 12th. Being the lagnesh he is not likely to deal a fatalblow. He rnay make hirn ill urhich he had started doing. Rahua rnalefic by his position in the quadrant becomes a functionalbenefie. He is in the house of Saturn the ayusha karaka as

well as the yoga karaka. There was no fear from him also. He

is also aspected by retrograde Jupiter and Moon the 10th lord.

As a benefic in kendra he would have become a functionalmalefic but due to his occupation of his own sign that draw-

back disappears. Sun, though a badhaka lord is the lord of

1lth house occupying Iagna with the ayush karaka and yoga

karaka. Hence he also does not rernain that malefic. We mayhave apprehensions from Mars as he is the 2nd and 7th lordplaced in 12th house. All the three positions are extremelymalefic. His sub-period was over in 1981. The sub periods tofollow were those of Mercury and Ketu. Mercury being theninth lord and also under direct aspect of retrograde Jupiterwas also not likely to deal the blow. Thus the native wasquite safe at least upto the end bf Venus period. The relativesof the native were therefore advised to go ahead with thetreatment. They were also told clearly that the native was notgoing to die so soon though he would be seriously ill. Asadvised they provided the best medical treatment and now heha-q resumed his normal duties aflber a hospitalisation of abouta year. As the native is alive it is not proposed to discuss thehoroscope further. Another case may however be taken up fordetailed discussions. This is the case of President Ziaof Paki'stan who died on 17-8-1988 in an air crash.

The lagha is Aquarius, a fixed sign. Its badhakasthana isninth frorn it, that is, Libra. The lord of Libra is Venus. Saturnoccupies it. Occupants are strongpr than the lord of the house.Saturn occupies a badhakasthana, is lord of 12th and a rankmalefic by nature. He beomes the worst marakesh.

Next to Saturn comes Venus. Stronger than Venus arethe planets occupvingVenus stars. Moon and Mercury are po-sited in Ventts Star, Mercury is the greater malefic of the two, because of his lordship of 8th house and placement in the 7th

house the marakasthana. In des@nding order we have Sat-

urn, Mercury ancl Venus. It is no surprise that the President

died during the concurrent period of these three planets' As

regards the date of the unfortunate event transit of planets

..n b" examined from Moon sign according to rules. Saturn

and Moon were transiting the Moon sign and the ?th house

from it respectively. Saturn was in Ketu star arrd Venus in

Rahu star.

It may be added here that death may be predicted fairly

accurately even by the examination of the birth chart in place

of the horary chart. When extreme caution is needed the

horary astroiogy can be applied' None of the two, that is the

horary chart or the birth chart, takes much of a tirne'

In the end it rnay be added that astrolory remains a sci'

ence of probabilities whatever be our accuracies of predictions.
