1975“Barry? It’s John Wagner on the new comic. There’s an

artist in one of our rival’s comics drawing a story called

‘Chained to His Sword.’ We wondered if you have any idea

who he is—maybe you represent him?”

Barry hums and haws a little, clears his throat, before

cautiously admitting: “Uhhhh… I may do.”

“Well, thank the gods. We’ve been asking every agent

we know, we’re desperate to track him down. So he’s

yours?”

“Mmmmmm.”

“Who is he, what’s his name?”

A long pause. He doesn’t like the way the conversation

is going. “It’s Ezquerra. Carlos Ezquerra. He’s Spanish.

Why?”

“Because we want him, Barry. We have just the story

for him. It’s called Rat Pack —a sort of Dirty Dozen thing.It’s right up your guy’s street.”

Again, very cautious. This is like dragging a child to the

dentist. “Carlos is getting a lot of regular work where he is.”

“Yeah, I’m sure he is, Barry, but we pay three times as

much.”

“Yes, but will you still be there in six months’ time?”

Ah, so that’s it. Continuity of employment. “Barry, I

promise you, if the new comic goes belly up, whatever I

move on to, whatever Pat (Mills) moves on to, Carlos will

always have work. Always, Barry, I promise. We love him.

We absolutely love him. We have to have him.”

Barry finally relented. Little did I realize then that much

of the work Carlos would do for the next nearly 40 years

would be written by me. I did know that even at that tender

age he was an accomplished comic artist with a wonderful

ability to tell a story, to make it flow. And I was soon to

discover his unique talent for character creation. In my

experience he has no equal. Nobody does it like Carlos.

Year after year, story after story, the memorable characters

burst from his pen—Rat Pack, Major Eazy, El Mestizo,

Strontium Dog, Al Bestardi, Bob the Galactic Bum, Bloody

Mary, Durham Red, and so many more. All of them

impressive, fully formed, just a glance at them and you

instantly know so much about them. Then add to that list

arguably the greatest of them all, Judge Dredd, and you

have a truly stellar body of work.

Is Judge Dredd Carlos’s best? You’d have to say yes,

simply because of his impact and popularity, though when

I first saw the character I was appalled—so different from

the lean, mean law machine I had envisaged, more like a

“bloody Spanish pirate” (I’ve edited my reaction to make itsuitable for publication). But as usual Carlos was right, the

character he created swiftly caught the imagination of the

2000 AD readers and has been a mainstay—the mainstay—

of the comic ever since, winning numerous awards in the

process.

Here then is the 2nd IDW collection of Judge Dredd by

the great Carlos Ezquerra. Marvel at its fluidity and

imagination, appreciate the natural grip of story and

character, and above all enjoy.
