PRELUDE TO THE OFFICIAL PASSING OF THE TORCH
By: Erlina Bartolata
Philippine Correspondent
It was 1958 when Meliton C. Geronimo founded the Sikaran Brotherhood of the
Philippines. He has, since then been the head of the Sikaran movement, taking over his father
Cipriano Geronimo (the last Sikaran Hari of Baras). His leadership made the Sikaran
Brotherhood of the Philippines the largest martial arts association in the country.
In 1966, Sikaran, then known as Philippine Karate, was granted recognition as a distinct
Filipino Unarmed Martial Art by the Asian Karate Association. Meliton C. Geronimo was
awarded the ultimate rank in the martial arts, the 10th Degree Red Belt, and the title
Grandmaster. Likewise, the Sikaran Elders of Baras, Rizal vested on him the title Supremo
(Leader).
As President and Leader of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo made Sikaran a household name in the martial arts. Membership of the
World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines grew by leaps, and bounds. Sikaran crossed the
seas, oceans, and the airspace to reach the other countries. Sikaran became one of the most
popular unarmed fighting arts alongside Japan's Karate, Korea's Tae Kwon Do, and China's
Wushu or Kung Fu.
It is the leadership of Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo that has kept Sikaran alive and
progressive all these years. For more than half a century Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo's
capacity to lead has been proven.
While training his son Meliton, Jr. in the physical aspects of Sikaran, he was also training
him in how to be a good leader. The Supremo instilled in his son the idea of always moving
forward and advancing with new ideas with emphasis on self-expression at the same time
keeping the Filipino heritage. Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo prepared his son to someday take
over leadership of the World Sikaran Brotherhood.
When Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo became incapacitated by a series of bout of stroke,
he knew that it was time for his son Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. to take over the leadership of the
World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. Anticipating some dissensions, the Supremo
issued a Legal Declaration naming his son the next President.
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo could have transferred his authority as President to his
son Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. anytime but he opted to do it on March 10, 2015, when he
celebrates his 88th birthday. Eighty-eight symbolizes the directions of the infinity of the
universe. The first 8 symbolizes the infinity of Sikaran as a Martial Art and the second 8
symbolizes the infinity of Sikaran as a Martial Sport.
Used universally as abbreviations in telegraphy and telephony, 88 means "Love and
Kisses." Although Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo has no religious or superstitious attitude, it
seems that all his actions are part of a heraldic field that serves as starting point for any action or
undertaking.
As a
prelude to the
official passing
of the Sikaran
Torch, Pantas
Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr.,
took a short visit
to the Philippines
on September 5,
2014. His first
action was to call
a meeting on
Sunday
September 7,
2014 of all
available
members. The
attendees were
led by Pantas Jaime Geronimo (the sole official who did not come in uniform), Mantas Ernesto
Millanes Regional Director of the National Capitol Region, accompanied by his Assistant
Regional Director Roberto Pamilar. Also in attendance was Mantas Ruel (Rogelio) Zuniga,
Regional Director of Region 4-A. Other attendees were Fernando Garay, F. Monforte, J.
Nabartey, R. Zabala, G. Burabod, J. Maglunob, A. Morilla, A. Facurib, M.Molero, E. Samillano,
On March 7, 2015 (in lieu of March 10), the World Sikaran
Brotherhood of the Philippines will celebrate the official passing of the torch and
transfer of authority as President, leader and master of the World Sikaran
Brotherhood.
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, will officially step down as President and
pass on the authority to his son Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr., thereafter will be addressed as Sikaran Pantas (Master) Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr. He is promoted to a higher level 9th Degree Red and White Belt. As
President, he will have the final authority in all and every affair of Sikaran,
especially in the grade and rank promotion.
Invited to this grand affair are all the Regional Country Directors, State
Directors, and Regional Directors. Rizal Provincial Officials, Baras Municipal
Officials, and Rizal Department of Education Officials are also invited to witness
this very important event in the history of Sikaran.

S. Villagan, L. Villagan, E. Bayog, J. Geronimo III, J Geronimo IV, R. Valeriano, R. Robles, and
B. Moreno. There were other officials, senior and junior black belts in attendance who did not
sign up. .
Prior to the arrival of Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., a meeting was held by those
present presided by Pantas Jimmy Geronimo. Topics that were taken up are:
1. Necessary documents for membership to be submitted to the Philippine Olympic
Committee (POC).
2. Rules and Regulations of Sikaran Tournaments and qualification of players.
3. Memorandum of the Department of Education that Sikaran Officials will no longer be
utilized in DepEd events, and everything will now be handled by teachers under
the Department of Education.
At the arrival of Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., the
meeting came to an abrupt stop.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.
took over the assembly. The first
action of Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. was to pass around a
piece of paper, and pencil for all
the present to write their questions
if they are too shy to speak up. He
knew that there were lots of
questions, but there are members,
especially junior members who are
not willing to speak up and be
recognized. He then explained the
two main purposes of this meeting.
The first and more important
purpose of the meeting is to
announce formally that on March 7, 2015, he will officially take over as President and final
authority of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. He further explained that
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo has
issued a Legal Declaration to that
effect. He also offered the fact that
there is a video of this transfer of
authority that will support his claim.
However, he said that this is not the
time or the place to present this
video. One of the senior officials
raised the question if there was
anybody who has heard this
supposed transfer of authority from
Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo to
his son Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo,
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. (in red shirt) passing
around Certificate of Appreciation to the attendees of the
meeting.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., assisted by
NCR Regional Director Ernesto Millanes (right)
and NCR Assistant Regional Director Roberto
Pamilar (left).
Jr. Mantas Ernesto
Millanes and Mantas Ruel
Zuniga stated that they
have heard Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo said
this at one time in the past.
Persons who have
ulterior motives and
personal agenda of course
will not accept this in its
face value. There was even
a self-proclaimed expert
who insisted that Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo's
transfer of authority
should have been a lateral
transfer to his younger
brother. Mr. Fernando
Garay of Cavite explained
to those who were not
aware of the laws of
succession, that in the laws
of succession, transmission in the acquisition
of possession, condition, or trait from past
generations is always from parents to
offspring.
This discussion turned into a rude
confrontation. For some unknown reasons,
those who have hidden agendas cannot
accept the wishes and order of Supremo
Meliton C. Geronimo. The only satisfactory
justification for this refusal to continue the
legacy of Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, is
the effect it will have on their "means of
livelihood" and their unwarranted self-
assumed "high position."
There was a question by one of the
participants in the meeting, that none of the
officers can answer. The participants asked
who was taking the minutes of this meeting.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. asked the
officers one by one but no one can give a
satisfactory answer. It was very obvious that
they want the title and the position but they
While Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. was explaining, Pantas
Jaime Geronimo displays his disinterest.
did not want the work. In order to change the subject, the very same person who asked why there
is nobody taking the minutes asked what the Sikaran Taliba's purpose is and who gave the
publisher the authority to publish the Sikaran Taliba. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. answered
all the questions and was applauded by the audience. He even offered the questioning officer and
all the attendees to have their Sikaran biography published. All they have to do is to submit their
manuscript to the Philippine Correspondent or to his or the Sikaran's email address.
The funny part is after they questioned Erlina Bartolata's presence in the meeting, they
wanted a copy of the minutes of the meeting since there was nobody taking the minutes, not the
Executive Assistant to the President or the elected (or is it appointed) Secretary, who was not
even present.
It was inevitable that the issuance of the Certificates of Promotion be brought up. Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., bluntly told the assembly that any Certificate of Promotion issued by
the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines will not be honored, and ranks above the 5th
Degree Black Belt, unless issued by the International Executive Council will be considered fake
and bogus.
When asked why this is so, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. gave the following
explanation:
1. The Headquarters cannot produce the necessary record validating the promotion as
provided for by the By-Laws.
2. The Headquarters cannot produce the payment of the Certificates and the accounting
or disbursement of such.
3. Nobody took responsibility in the promotion, issuance of certificate , and the
disbursement of the payment, which was supposed to go to the bank account of
the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. asked what happened to the funds of the World Sikaran
Brotherhood of the Philippines and the record of disbursement, however, nobody can give a
credible explanation. He also asked why there was no Philippine Delegation to the 4th World
Sikaran Tournament in Canada. Again, nobody can answer.
4. The numbering system is now out of control for failure of the Headquarters to keep
records.
5. Someone said that the Certificate of Promotion was changed without due process.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. explained that the change was with order and
approval of Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo. Likewise, he said Pantas Jimmy
Geronimo was part of the change and was one of the signatories in 2012, while he
was in the United States.
When nobody can find fault with Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., some of the officers
showed their real character and became rude and unruly. However, the true leader that he is,
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo kept civil and cool. Instead of stepping down to the level of the
uneducated morons, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. attempted to bring them up to the level of a
gentleman worthy to be a Sikaran Official.
While Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. was
conducting the meeting and answering whatever
question whoever may have, Pantas Jaime Geronimo
showed his disinterest and displayed his rudeness by
texting and twiddling with his cell phone. His
supposed Executive Assistant, Mantas Alfonso
Facurib tried to talk over whatever Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. was explaining.
There was a refreshment break courtesy of
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. This was followed
by the the scheduled second part of the meeting.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. displayed the banner
of the World Sikaran Brotherhood and explained
what it is and the purpose and role it plays in the
advancement of Sikaran in the International Level.
There were those who were interested in what
the World Sikaran Brotherhood is all about but they
they were all more excited to have their picture taken
holding the banner.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., explained that the World Sikaran Brotherhood is neither
a new nor a breakaway group but the International Umbrella group of all the other countries'
Sikaran organizations.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. collected the cards he distributed at the start of the
meeting. There was only one complaint and that was the mismanagement of the Headquarters in
the affairs of Sikaran, including the failure of the Philippines to field a delegation in the 4th
World Sikaran Tournament in Canada in May 2014. There was enough time for preparation,
since the Canadian Host of the Tournament gave them the invitation almost one year in advance.
The headquarters announced the Philippine Delegation line-up in October of 2013. Nobody in
Gener Migo Burabod (left) was the
only official who showed interest in
the active participation of the
"juniors."
the headquarters was also able to explain what happened to the money solicited for the
Philippine Team.
In his short stay in Baras, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. took the opportunity to teach the
new generation of Sikaranistas, in front of Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo.
Instead of answering the complaints, officials in the Headquarters kept silent and ignore
the problem as if it did not exist.
Prior to the adjournment of the meeting, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., gave
everybody present a Certificate of Appreciation, which he printed right during the meeting to
impress on the members that the brotherhood has now to ability to print any form needed for the
furtherance of the aims and goals of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines. Pantas
Jaime Geronimo signed the Certificate as Philippine Director.
The meeting adjourned with divided and dissenting opinions. However, everybody was
united in their goal of continuing the legacy of Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo. In closing, Pantas
Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. reiterated the fact that he is the one who was chosen by the Supremo to
lead the members of Sikaran into the future.
After the meeting, NCR Assistant Regional Director Bert Pamilar posted the following
on his "Facebook" Page: " On march 8 2015 in Baras Rizal .you should watch , see and Join the event of Sikaran passing of torch of supreme Grand Master Lt. Col. Meliton c. Geronimo. To his Son Meliton S. Geronimo Jr. and will be attended by all Sikaran members around the World ! ! !
This information was corrected by Sikaran Valenzuela, to: " Sikaran Valenzuela sir Bert pugay po.. dba March 7. 2015 is Passing of the Torch and Leadership from Supreme Grand Master Lt. Col. Meliton C. Geronimo. to his Son Meliton Geronimo Jr. and March 8. 2015 is the Election Day for WSBP and a Discussion for the future Improvement and Development of Wsbp"..
In connection with this
election, Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. posted the
following on his Facebook
Page:
"Formal Election of Set of Officers for WSBP WILL BE ON mARCH 8. 2015 at Baras. Rizal.. If you have the Edge to grasp the authority and function for everbody like no ordinary officer then here is your moment to prove that with your knowledge and

Please be inform that all party interested on being an officer must submit letter of interest, send letter to my private message or email. election is for all regions. thank you P.S. all black belts have the right to vote and run for office…….
The last sentence on Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.'s comment is an answer to the
uncalled for comments of some officials not to include the junior members in the decision
making of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines.
Due to the inability of some members and officers from the other regions to attend the
meeting, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. decided to take short trips to Northern Luzon and
Southern Luzon Regions.
His first destination was Baguio City, where he met with Nelson Millare, Regional
Director of Region 1 and Joel Kiblasan, Regional Director of CAR. He also met with Donny
Calaunan, who complained to Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. about his expulsion without due
process. The latter promised to look into the matter and conduct an investigation. In addition,
present during their meeting were Rene David and Roger Orpina.
Their meeting covered various subjects, including the Department of Education of
Baguio City to have a regular Sikaran event. The Program of Activities in Baguio City will
include Regional, Invitational, and Open Tournaments. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. also
suggested a regular seminar for all the members. For the first time, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr. suggested that every Regional Director must have a Junior Assistant so the junior members
will not feel being left out and neglected. This idea was welcome by everybody during the
meeting.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo,
Jr. personally invited those present to
attend the Official Passing of the
Torch on March 7, 2015, and the
election of officers on March 8, 2015.
Likewise, he extended an invitation to
the Golden Jubilee Celebration in
2016. In closing, Pantas Meliton S.
Geronimo, Jr. announced that he will
send the Certificate of promotion of
the following: Nelson Millare,
presently 7th Degree to 8th Degree
Black Belt; Joel Kiblasan, presently
6th Degree to 7th Degree Black Belt;
and Rene David, presently 6th Degree
Black Belt to 7th Degree Black Belt.
These members paid the certificates
but were never sent by the
headquarters.

entourage stopped by in Camiling, Tarlac to meet up with Sonny Mejia, who is interested in
establishing a Sikaran gymnasium. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. gave his word to help in any
way he can, including assigning an instructor to help out.
From Northern Luzon, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. motored to the Bicol Region.
There he met with Stephen Oli, Regional Director. Their initial meeting was successful in every
aspect. However, in order for the other officers to be present, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr.
came back a week later and met with Stephen Oli, Joseph Gomez, Leopoldo Bolofer, Romeo
Paje, Nestor Delloro, Police Supt. Alfredo Nebua, Reynolds Agnes, Nelson Oflear, Wilfredo
Rantael, Dexter Rebua, Jun Gonzales, Elinor Asico.
The Regional Officers presented their program of activities during the meeting while
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. reiterated his plans for Sikaran. He explained the difference
between the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, which is the local group in the
Philippines and the World Sikaran Brotherhood, which is the international umbrella organization
of the different local groups such as the Philippines, the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy,
Saudi Arabia, Ireland and the other different countries.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. enumerated the different programs he is working on.
First on his priority is to raise funds for the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines to
finance his projects. He will require all Regional Directors to submit an annual Program of
Activities with an estimated budget. When available, the WSBP Headquarters will subsidize
every region's activities. In addition, when funds are available, Regional Directors will have PHP
5,000.00 at his disposal so he can meet up with the different Provincial Representatives. During a
semi-annual seminar, members will undergo First Aid and CPR training to be handled by the
Philippine National Red Cross, who will issue them a Certificate of Completion. Pantas Meliton
S. Geronimo, Jr. is also looking in the possibility of giving life insurance to members and their
families at a very nominal fee to be included in the membership fee.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. also informed everybody that even as he speaks,
construction of the World Sikaran Brotherhood Central Training Center is underway in Bilog
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. with the officials of Region 5 (Bicol Region).
Lalim in Baras, Rizal. Aside from the training center, there will also be a barracks-type quarters
to accommodate members who are visiting where they can be billeted for free.
Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. extended his personal invitation to witness the Official
Passing of the Torch when Supremo and Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo transfer the
Presidency and Final Sikaran Authority to him. He also announced the grand Jubilee Celebration
on November 6, 2016, marking the 50th Anniversary of the international recognition of Sikaran
as a distinct Filipino Art of Fighting, and the First Sikaran Hall of Fame.
Finally, Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. invited all the members of the World Sikaran
Brotherhood of the Philippines to be a part of the history of Sikaran by supporting the Sikaran
Taliba. All they have to do is to send their Sikaran biography and pictures with captions to
Sikaran Taliba by email to:

President
World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines, and
World Sikaran Brotherhood
On November 6, 2016, The World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines will celebrate
its golden anniversary. It was on November 6, 1966 when the Asian Karate Association,
composed of Japan, Korea, China and the Phillipines recognized Sikaran as a distinct unarmed
fighting art of Filipino origin and named Meliton Geronimo Grandmaster with the rank of 10th
Degree Red Belt.
It is no coincidence that November 6, 1966 has a close harmonic connection to the
element of fire. November 6, 1966 is a Sunday, a holyday. In the Gregorian calendar, it is the
310th day of the year. There are 55 days remaining until the end of this year.
November 6, 1966 falls under the zodiac sign of Scorpio. The modern birthstone for this
month is Topaz.
The mythical animal representative of this date is the Horse. Interestingly, the first two
kicks of Sikaran were influenced by the horse. The front leg kick is called padamba in Sikaran
and the rear leg kick is called sipang kabayo.
In the very old art of astrology, fire is the element on this date. It is no surprise that when
Meliton C. Geronimo was born on March 10, 1927, the sphere of influence of his birth is the
element of fire.
Sikaran is like the element of fire. It is associated with energy, assertiveness, and passion.
Sikaran, like fire does not know fear or doubt. There is no mean tricks in Sikaran, and like fire it
consumes everything on its path. Sikaran is an important part of Filipino culture and vital to the
development of Philippine civilization
Spiritual Fire. Fire stands for emotions free from restraint, such as love and happiness, but also
hatred and anger. Fire stands for fair fight. Fire does not need mean tricks or dirty techniques.
Fire is the element burning in your consciousness, moving you to fight for the things you believe
in, in a manner that is fair and square. Fire represents a vision, a quality, a conviction, not only as
a commitment but also a realization. If the Fire has caught something, it fights for it until it has
consumed it or has burned it down, destroyed it. It can be extinguished or it can extinguish by
itself. Fire doesn’t know fear or doubt. It doesn’t know mercy or shame either. If it wants
something, it will get over everything on its path to get it. Fire also stands for inspiration,
compassion, love, longing and lust.
This jubilee will be marked by festivities worthy of this grand event. A Sikaran Hall of
Fame will be held in conjunction with the Golden Anniversary.
In 1966, the original plan was to invite the Grandmasters who were invovled in the
recognition of Sikaran as a distinct fighting art from the Philippines on its 50th Anniversary. But
this will not be so. Grandmasters from Japan, Kyojiro Furusawa and Koichi Kondo have passed
away. Grandmasters Dr. Kwai Byeung Yun of Ji Do Kwan Kong Soo Doo, and Hwang Kee of
Moo Doo Kwan Tang Soo Doo of Korea have likewise passed away. With the dissolution of the
Asian Karate Association in 1970, we have lost contact with Chinese Grandmaster Chua Tiong
Ki, but there were uncomfirmed reports that he too passed away.
Only Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo is still alive, albeit at 87th years old, he is suffering
from the ill effects of several bouts with stroke.
The only other master who is still alive and was part of the early age of Sikaran is Kim
Soo Jin, now 10th Degree Red Belt of Ji Do Kwan (now a part of Korean Tae Kwon Do).

2010 - 10th Degree Red Belt
From the early beginnings of Sikaran in the Philippines, it has now spread its wings in the
four corners of the world.
The golden jubilee is still 2 years away but preparations are now being taken to insure
that it will be the greatest event in Sikaran until Novermber 6, 2066, when Sikaran celebrates its
centennial or diamond anniversary.
Significant events took place on November 6, 1966. Of course everybody in the Sikaran
world are aware that it was on this important date that the Asian Karate Association recognized
Sikaran as a distinct Filipino art of fighting and declared Meliton C. Geronimo, Grandmaster of
Sikaran with the rank of 10th Degree Red Belt.
However, the recognition of Sikaran is not the only noteworthy occurrence of that day.
There are several events that took place in November 1966. Some were good, some were not so
good. Some changed the course of history, some changed people's life.
In China's Chairman Mao Tse Tung launched China's Cultural Revolution and begun the
purging of the intellectuals who were against Mao's administration.
An earthquake in Turkey left 2,394 dead and thousands injured.
In India, Indira Gandhi was elected Prime Minister.
In the field of science, Soviet Union lands Luna 9 on the moon early in the year. A few
months later the United States followed by a soft moon landing of Surveyor I.
In the field of fashion, Miniskirts are in.
In the field of health, cigarette packets in the United States must carry the health
warning "Caution! Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health."
In the early part of 1966, Ronald Reagan enters politics becoming governor of
California.
Bill Russell became the first black coach in NBA history (Boston Celtics.
Among the Sikaran members who were there on that memorable day, one who is still
very active to this date is Emmanuel es Querubin. Emmanuel Querubin is now 9th Degree Red
and White Belt, holds the appointive position of Executive and Technical Assistant to the
Grandmaster and Director for Research and Standards, and is the Editor-in-Chief of the Sikaran
Taliba.
