Local Byway Project Wins National Scenic Byway Award

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byways Corridor Management Plan project receives prestigious award during the 2011 National Scenic

    Byways Conference.

Minneapolis, MN The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway in

Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia received a 2011 Scenic Byway Award for its

Corridor Management Plan (CMP) project in the Planning category on August 24 at the

National Scenic Byways 2011 Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

To include stakeholders from the three states within the historically significant

Journey Through Hallowed Ground (JTHG) National Heritage Area, an advisory

committee invited each community to contribute toward developing the JTHG Corridor

Management Plan. The completed plan outlined specific goals, identified responsible

parties and targeted potential funding sources for ongoing stewardship.

The plan, prepared by a multi-discplinary team of advisors led by Lardner/Klein

Landscape Architects of Alexandria, Virginia, has led to its designation as a National

Scenic Byway as well as for new funding for a visual and graphic identity plan

($270,000), wayfinding implementation ($1,300,000), master landscape plan for a

sesquicentennial commemorative effort ($300,000) in its first two years since completion.

Sponsored by the Americas Byways Resource Center, Federal Highway

Administration (FHWA), and the American Association of State Highway Transportation

Officials (AASHTO), the prestigious Scenic Byway Awards recognize eight projects of

excellence from byway nominations across the country. Selection by a panel of byway-

community experts is based on four criteria, including community involvement and

public outreach; partnerships; advancing the goals of the byways corridor management

plan; and, innovation. The winning projects must also serve as successful models for

    other byway organizations and corridors.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground National Scenic Byway is part of the

Americas Byways collection of 150 distinctive routes designated by the U.S. Secretary

    of Transportation.

We hope these winning projects will inspire new efforts to preserve, protect,

interpret, and promote the intrinsic qualities along Americas Byways, commented

Michelle Johnson, Director of Americas Byways Resource Center. For more information
