Day in the life of a Editor-in-Chief

All papers submitted to the journal are first examined by me or the Managing Editor to make a recommendation regarding its suitability for the journal

I assign the selected papers to an Editor with expertise in the subject areaI handle papers as the “assigned editor” (choosing reviewers and making decisions)I handle appeals, adjudicate ethical violation casesI organize Special Issues, and Feature ArticlesI choose editors, EAB membersI organize EAB and editors meetingsI make presentations at ACS meetings and other meetings about JPCI work with marketing folksI interact with ACS Publications, including quarterly meetings, and various

committees, on publication policy issues, software issues, interface with the ACS, etc.

The EIC oversees the operation of the journal and is responsible for insuring that submitted papers are promptly and fairly evaluated

What is the value-added of an editor?

The EIC of an ACSjournal typically hasmany years ofexperience as an activeparticipant in the fieldof research and brings thatexperience into playeach day in theevaluation ofmanuscripts and inpiloting the course thatthe journal takes

How to choose where to publish research?

1. Which journal is likely to lead to the most readers of the paper? (This is a combination of the impact factor, the nature of the journal (society versus commercial), breadth of distribution, etc.

2. Is there urgency to the publication? Which journal is likely to give the fastest processing

3. Match with the mission of the journals (sometimes the journal specifies which papers they don’t want to see)

4. Issues of paper length (letters format versus regular paper)5. Is this a review or feature article? Are there special features, such

as videos, where a web-only format would be good.6. Do we have a library subscription?7. Do the coauthors of the paper agree on what should be done?
