Attendance Policy/Tardiness:

Absences due to employment do not constitute excused absences. If you arrive after the attendance sheet has been completed, you will be considered absent.

ARRIVE ON TIME!

Your attendance and participation is expected, roll will be recorded and can affect your final grade. You are allowed to miss two classes during the semester without penalty. If you miss more than two class sessions your final grade will be reduced by one-letter grade for each absence in excess of two.

For example, if you earn a final grade of “B” and have missed three class sessions, your final grade will be reduced to a “C”. If you earn a final grade of “B” and have missed four class sessions, your final grade will be reduced to a “D”.

DEADLINES: THESE ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND ARE NOT FLEXIBLE UNLESS THE INSTRUCTOR DEEMS IT NECESSARY.

The following secondary deadlines categories have been established to create a consistent flow in class progression and will not be adjusted unless the instructor deems it necessary. The ACTUAL DEADLINES are located in the SYLLABUS. However, if a student misses any of these deadlines (unless adjusted by the instructor) the student will receive a ONE GRADE REDUCTION on the assignment but WILL REMAIN RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ASSIGNMENT.

1. Project updates as assigned. 2. Story Script writing as assigned. 3. Social Media teases as assigned.

The following primary PROJECT DEADLINES categories have been established to resemble the typical “real world” applications in the Communications profession. ANY ASSIGNMENT THAT FALLS UNDER THESE CATETORGIES THAT IS LATE WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT RECEIVING A ZERO FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT REGARDLESS IF THAT STUDENT MET ANY OR ALL OF THE PREVIOUS CATEGORY DEADLINES.

1. All on-campus video related assignments throughout the semester, including any

VO/SOT assignments. 2. All off-campus video related assignments throughout the semester, including NAT

Sound Packages, Personal Profile Packages and Reporter Packages. This strict policy is designed to foster respect for the cooperative nature of the class and the contributions each of you are expected to make. This policy also reflects the “real world” consequences for not being able to perform duties expected in a timely manner.

Course Assessment & Evaluation: Your final grade will be determined by your performance on the following:

Textbook Exams (2 @ 10% each {20%} total)

There will be a total of two written exams during the semester. These exams will focus on the readings from the textbook as well as camera and non-linear editing instruction. Exams will be curved if needed to reflect their difficulty. Absolutely NO make-up exams will be given without prior notification AND subsequent documentation of a medical excuse or other personal emergency.

Skills (Camera/Editing) Exam (1 @ 25% total)

There will be a total of one final skills test at the end of the semester. The final exam

skills test will consist of instructor provided package elements in which you will be required to edit a package within the scheduled final exam period, write an anchor lead-in and anchor-tag.. All students must complete this final skills exam within the allotted final exam time, which is one hour and fifteen minutes. No exceptions will be made, failure to do so will adversely affect your grade.

Arrangements for any make-up exams must be made within 72 hours of the original quiz date. This policy will be strictly enforced --- no exceptions!

Projects and Intermediate Assignments (4 for a total of 55% of your grade)

Project 1: Nat Sound Multimedia Package 1 (5%)

Intermediate Assignments: On Campus VO/SOTs

(5%)

Project 2: Reporter Multimedia Package 2 (15%)

Project 3: Reporter Multimedia Package 3 (30%)

EXTRA CREDIT: 25 pts Weekend HASTAGS (this has made a difference in the

final grades of other students in previous classes. Students will need to participate in 100% of the weekend

hastag projects to qualify).

Because of the time sensitivity of this work you will be expected to submit your projects by the due date and no later. In this industry tardiness = termination.

Therefore, late primary projects will not be accepted, no exceptions and you will receive a ZERO for the ENTIRE PROJECT regardless if you met the previous secondary assignment deadlines etc.

Plan your project management accordingly and manage your time effectively. All package projects will be done on stories beyond the UNFcampus.

Assignment Repurposing: Student work produced outside this class may not be submitted for class assignments. No assignment for this class may be submitted to any program outside the Department of Communication without authorization of the professor. Violations of this policy will result in a zero for that assignment.

Grading Scale:

All exams/assignments will be graded on a 100-point scale and appropriately weighted to determine your final grade in the class. The calculation of your final grade will adhere to the following scale.

A 94 – 100 A- 90 – 93 B+ 87 – 89 B 84 – 86 B- 80 – 83 C+ 77 – 79 C 70 – 76 D 65 – 69/F < 65

Academic Honesty and Integrity: A major determinant of your character is your integrity. Dishonesty not only irreparably damages your integrity, but it also damages the credibility of our institution. The purpose of your enrollment in this institution is not to be assigned a random evaluation but to develop your academic, intellectual and analytical skills. Any dishonesty is at direct cross-purposes to these goals. As such, any work you submit must be a product of your own efforts and without any unauthorized assistance. Any and all instances of academic misconduct will be subject to the policies outlined in the Academic Integrity Code and Academic Misconduct Policies, a copy of which is available at http://www.unf.edu/registrar/forms/misconduct_policy.pdf. As stated -

Violations of the principle of academic integrity include, but are not limited to: a) CHEATING: Intentionally using, providing, obtaining, or attempting to use, provide, or obtain unauthorized materials, information, notes, study aids or other devices in any academic exercise. This definition includes unauthorized communication of information during an academic exercise. b) FABRICATION & FALSIFICATION: Intentional and unauthorized alteration or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise. Falsification is a matter of altering information, while fabrication is a matter of inventing or counterfeiting information for use in an academic exercise.

5

Page 6: JOU 3342 MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING Fall 2016€¦ · JOU 3109 Multimedia Reporting . Course Description: This course will provide continuing instruction in reporting techniques learned

c) MULTIPLE SUBMISSIONS: The submission of any portion of the same academic work, including oral reports, electronic files, or hard-copy form, for credit more than once without authorization. PLAGIARISM: Intentionally or knowingly presenting the work of another as one's own (i.e., without proper acknowledgment of the source). The sole exception to the requirement of acknowledging sources is when the ideas, information, etc. are common knowledge. e) ABUSE OF ACADEMIC MATERIALS: Intentionally or knowingly destroying, stealing, or making inaccessible library or other academic resources material. f) COMPLICITY IN ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Providing assistance in any form to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty. Any violation in the above policy will result in an unforgivable F for the course.

Other Policies: UNF has a number of policies of importance to students, including a detailed academic integrity policy, grade appeal policies, Americans with Disabilities Act polices, sexual harassment policies and others. These are available in the catalog and/or in numerous offices on campus. Students should be aware of these policies.

Student Responsibility: According to the UNF Course Catalog, it is the student’s responsibility to adhere to all academic and University policies, procedures and deadlines that are provided by, but not limited to, the University catalog, University administration, faculty and staff make every effort to provide accurate information and standards tostudents.

It is the student’s responsibility to:

Be proactive to research all available services and resources and ask questions. Utilize information made available via myW ings, the University website, and the University catalog. Regularly check UNF email, Blackboard, and the myWings portal for new information. Email is UNF’s official communication method. Regularly visit academic advising to obtain pertinent academic information and curricularguidance.

Know and understand degree requirements and progress toward degree completion. View a Degree Evaluation and an Academic Roadmap.

Know and satisfy all financial obligations. Provide and maintain current and accurate personal information and records. Embrace

opportunities to be productive students on and off campus. Exhibit integrity and ethical behavior at all times. Be aware of personal safety and

security.

The University has the right to change policies and procedures at any time as necessary. Source: http://www.unf.edu/catalog/

Classroom Decorum: To demonstrate respect to your fellow students, please make sure you turn off your cell phone and/or pager before class, however at times you will use your phone to participate in storytelling assignments using various social media channels as part of your instructions. Only then will phones be allowed to be turned on in the classroom.

Page 7: JOU 3342 MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING Fall 2016€¦ · JOU 3109 Multimedia Reporting . Course Description: This course will provide continuing instruction in reporting techniques learned

I also understand “life happens,” so if circumstances dictate that you must be available for an urgent matter, please inform me before class begins. You are expected to arrive on time and stay for the duration of all classes. Excessive tardiness will result in being turned away from class and charged with an unexcused absence. In the event of severe weather, class will of course be canceled should the university close.

Classroom Equipment: The equipment used for this class, while not priceless, does have a significant value both in importance and financial to the entire Department of Communications. You will be held responsible for improper use, misuse or abuse of any piece of equipment they check out. We have established a checkout/return procedure for equipment and it shall be followed by all students to ensure there is a sense of accountability for University property.

For the purpose of instruction everyone will be using Adobe Premier editing software to complete assignments. I understand you may prefer another software program, however to fully understand the role of non-linear editing in today’s communication realm it perhaps is regarded as the most basic system available and the easiest to comprehend.

Please watch this tutorial prior to the first class meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMe HRRWNGgA

Additionally, there are plenty of tutorials available on YouTube or Lynda.com. I will be providing links to some of the tutorials I have found most useful to those who aren’t familiar with the program. These will be topic specific and posted weekly. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO VIEW THESE TUTORIALS PRIOR TO CLASSES. If you choose to not watch them, it will hinder your ability to learn and perform the daily tasks, most importantly complete the assignments and exams which constitute 80% of your grade.
