Azar SynagogueProject Guidelines:

Create a worship facility in downtown Springfield, MO incorporating HVAC and attempting to connect the college students from various campuses through a specific religion and a central location. This site is also located in the heart of a city wide renovation to create a larger green environment through the downtown.

The Site had many opportunities to develop from the existing recycling company. One issue we removed from our design parameters is that this site is below the flood plain. I anticipate that the daylighting of the Jordan Valley Creek that runs along the east and south side of the site will help to relieve flooding issues. The great observation I made upfront was the overall foot traffic adjacent to the site captured my attention.

Design Concept:

Community engagement with a Jewish foundation and passion. I anticipate to accomplish this through architecture with the shifting of spaces that allow interaction in a meaningful way. Pro-grammatically addressing the function of an urban context by connecting the synagogue with the community through Education, Mentor-ship, and Nutrition. The developed intention of my synagogue design located in Springfield, MO is that a spatial shift can happen with the change in human activities and I am designing spaces that allow opportunities for these shifts to happen though plan and form cohesively.

Human Interaction Defines FunctionJordan Creek’s water flow is currently directed through a maze of underground man made concrete structures. This infrastructure has also been acquired as shelter to a large amount of the less fortunate homeless in Springfield, MO. Often East Phelps street is used as the quickest access point in and out of downtown in proximity to the underground structures. When you travel down Phelps you can often see the homeless walking or chatting right on side of the road. This connection is strong because within the Jewish faith the common mentality is that work/prayer/devotion is never finished, this helped to develop the design to keep an open relationship with the homeless that walk the perimeter of the site on a daily basis.

The Azar Synagogue is designed so that all spaces except for the ‘support’ spaces may be utilizes for multiple functions. The large open spaces in the worship, lobby, , and interior community spaces along with double the restrooms required allow the congregation to open these up to use them as an emergency shelter, expo area, food drive, etc. The Classrooms can be used for workforce training, Torah readings research, and other educational based practices. The exterior plaza space displayed to the right is intended to be very versatile, creating less limitations on what can be accomplished was a large factor. Materials: The glazing helps to keep a visual connection between the congregation and the community surrounding it. The rumber (rubber composite lumber) wood paneling that alternates the glazing along the vertical components of the envelope are used as an exterior shading device and to bring a feeling of aesthetic warmth to the building that

the metal panel roof nor glazing do not display.

The Facet roof system is used because of its unique way to transition while it covers multiple levels. After experimentation with massing models I discovered it also allows the ability to create unique roof overhangs. The overhangs create functional patios spaces since the ground surfaces are hard-scape or grass pavers. The covering also allow theses spaces to be utilized for various functions such as a small gathering space for celebration, studying, or to be used as a homeless sleeping pad.

Creating a Prosperous Divide

In 1947 the United Nations (U.N.) helped to draft a plan to divide the land into two separate nations what they thought was equal and fair. This was an issue because neither side could completely agree once the plan was taken to the physical land. The issue was that the agreement didn’t address the need each religion requires for a complete recognized nation. Both religions, Judaism and Islamic Faith, are peaceful at the origins and intentions but this fight for land has created extreme violence.

Israel the current home of the Jews has grown to be a world power and have been slowly acquiring land from the Palestinian people. This has been a slow successful over taking that is enforced by the Israeli military. The encroachment has created a terrible oppression on the Palestinian people. This result of fighting has continued on and off throughout the years and continues today.

Resolve the Violent Conflict Between Israel and Palestine

1896

In 1896 Theodor Herzi wrote Der Judenstaat, this was considered the start to the Zionist movement. He envisioned the founding of the future independent Jewish state during the 20th century. This supports the return of Jews to Israel as a means for Jews to be a majority in their nation.

Prior to the Zionist movement the majority land owners in Israel were Muslim Palestinians.

Bring companies and communities from both Israel and Palestine together to create a combined agricultural venture that will create local financial growth and provide a larger scale local food source.

Utilize the claimed No-Go zone as well as land in West Bank that connects physically. Between the settlements of Modi’in Makabim, Israel and Beit Liqya, Palestine specifically.

The initial communities to have equal opportunity of employment: Nof Alalon,Beit Sira, Re’ut, Safa, Nahshon, Beit Nuba, Modi’in Makabim, Beit Liqya

Provide national startup funding contribution.

The removal of the concrete wall is to happen in the proposed location. This decreases restrictions between the two countries access to the entire site, which shall span between Israel and Palestine.

There will be facilities created in various locations on the borders of the crops near highways. These facilities will be the processing and distribution locations for the various fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, and spices.

The lands will also incorporate various green spaces for public use and walking trails for the general access public use for both Israel and Palestine.

Unbroken Home (Competition Project Leader)

The Unbroken House is durable, cost effective, energy efficiency, easy to construct, and aesthetically pleasing for Joplin, Missouri. The design is a 3 bedroom single family home that is resistant against up to EF-5 rated winds. The mixture of passive, sustainable, and resilient systems used in designing the home is the correct direction in rebuilding in Joplin.

Just takes a bit of planning it out

Unbroken HomeThe design displays how resisting high winds by using an ICF (Insulate Concrete Form) wall systems. Extra protection is provided in the interior of the home with a safe room located within the mechanical room and a walk in closet, which has no windows and tornado rated doors.

How could we utilize passive systems to help with cutting down the life cycle cost achieving energy and resource efficiency? Large low casement windows on the South wall are used in allowing the South/Southeast primary winds to passively ventilate. The ICF creates a thermal mass that can transfer heated radiant through tubing that is integrated into a radiant floor.

The southern roof is at an optimal angle for Joplin Missouri which is 37 degrees. If the desire is for a long term financial savings adding up to 25 photo-voltaic thermal panels allows the home owner to maximize on solar gain in the Joplin location. If building resiliently and sustainable saves you a couple hundred a month on utilities and maintenance, this allows for earlier home loan payoffs.

Recovery becomes easier when a home can be repaired instead of replaced. When your wall system and roof is anchored to the ground proven to withstand the most dangerous storms, there leaves very little to be destroyed. The Unbroken House absorbs the damaging winds and hail conditions allowing for a comfortable piece of mind when it comes to safety in overall security.

1907 Peerless Steamer Tractor House

The building relates to the tractor’s needs and the multiple function capability. This tractor operates on burning wood that heats water to create steam that allows the tractor to plow and plant as well as to run a saw for cutting wood.

I incorporated a structural wall system that would also serve as a place to store logs of chopped wood and a slopped roof for directing water to the cisterns for collection. While the opposite wall helps to keep the daily sun off the visitors seats but also becomes a lateral stiffener for the vertical members. This wall can also serves as a place for displaying museum education information about the tractor.

Slotted ChairThe concept to design a piece of furniture with the use of the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. The intent is for the chair to be affordable and adaptive to a college student life style. Adaptive because the chair allows lounging and/or studying the two things students do the most on a daily basic during any given semester.

Affordable in the way of repair-ability if a piece were to break you could buy a small $10 piece of birch plywood and replace the component. The design requires no hardware. The cushion was a product of environment using something as common as a gym mat which most students have or have access to.

Prototype - Health Safety DesignThe Startup weekend was a chance to get a team Friday night and present: a whole business model, prototype, marketing strategy, social media interface, and a customer base supporting this by Sunday. It was a great chance for me to collaborate with people I had never met and provide leadership/support throughout the weekend. We received recognition for the best Pitch Performance!!!

My team and supportive facilitators made a mock up promotional video.

Here are some images of the process and product as it developed over the weekend.

Creating a Mobile Work StationThe client wanted to lease a 2013 Chevrolet Impala for 3 years then return. The custom work station had to be outfitted to the existing hardware. It had to be returned in the same condition it was leased it. So I created an adjustable workstation that would connect to the existing seat rails. I also temporary replaced the bench seat with two captain chairs for comfort while working during long drives.

Art of Space

The goal is to transform a space. This ‘Art of Space Club’ was founded after the founder was inspired by a group project I helped lead called the ‘bottle canopy.’ Knitting Space installation was created by Drury University’s Art of Space Art and Architecture students and faculty, lead by Gerard Nadeau, in collaboration with the idea Xfactory, RuBert Studios & community volunteers for the December 2011 First Friday Art-walk in downtown Springfield, MO

Knitting SpaceJust in time for Art Walk, Art of Space completed yet another installation for the Springfield community. The Knitting Space was in the works for several months, and after an impressive collaboration of Springfield community members and Drury University students, the installation opened to the public this past Friday. Thanks to Idea XFactory, an emerging Springfield arts collaborative and partner of Art of Space, we were able to construct the exciting new installation at 351 Boonville, just north of Park Central Square, neighboring with the Squidfoo art gallery.

Missouri State University’s Inertia Dance Company wowed Art of Space visitors with an impressive dance choreographed in response to the installation. Inertia performed twice for Springfield community members, then the installation became an active playground for the Springfield public. People of all ages came to admire the piece or roll around on the plastic, knitted form.

Modeled after Jamaican Olympian Usain Bolt capturing my interpretation of ‘Sprint’ this is what i see and feel compiled to created a stylized depiction though this composition. I utilized a recycled wooded stool some glue and paint chip samples to create the 3-dimensional piece. The lighting of the piece became very involved because his shadows became a interpretation of other runners trailing behind Bolt.
