Jacob and his family lived a long time ago in the land of Canaan.Jacob had 12 sons but one of them was his favourite. His namewas Joseph. Jacob gave Joseph a fine coat to show that he washis favourite son. His brothers hated him and not just because ofthe coat.

Another reason why Joseph’s brothers hated him was because ofhis dreams. One day Joseph told them, “I dreamt we were out inthe field tying up bundles of wheat. My bundle stood up andyours made a circle around mine and bowed down to it.”

Some time later, Joseph had another dream. He told his fatherand his brothers, “I dreamt that the sun, moon and 11 stars allbowed down to me.” His father was cross. “Do you really thinkyour mother and I and your brothers are going to bow down toyou?” Jacob asked. But he wondered to himself what the dreamcould mean.

Joseph’s brothers looked after the family’s flocks of sheep andgoats. They were often far away from home because they had tomove around with the animals to find grass. One day Jacob saidto Joseph, “Take this food to your brothers and find out if theyare all right.” So Joseph set off.

Look at the picture and find six things that would not have been therein Joseph’s time. Then count the number of sheep!

When his brothers saw him coming they said, “Here’s thedreamer! Let’s kill him and say that a wild animal got him.” Butthe oldest brother, Reuben, tried to protect Joseph. “Let’s not killhim,” he said, “but just throw him into this dry well.” WhenJoseph reached them, the brothers ripped off his fine coat andthrew him into the well. They just laughed at Joseph’s cries forhelp.

As the brothers sat down to eat the food Joseph had brought,they saw a camel caravan taking spices to Egypt. One brother,Judah, said, “Let’s sell Joseph to those traders and not harm him.After all, he is our brother.” The others agreed so they pulledJoseph out of the well and sold him to the traders, who took himaway to Egypt.

The king’s wine steward and his chief baker were in prison withJoseph. One morning they looked upset. “We had strange dreamslast night,” they told Joseph. “Tell me about them,” said Joseph.“I will ask God to help me understand.” The wine steward replied,“I saw a vine with three branches. I squeezed the juice from thegrapes into the king’s cup.”
