Tip #4

Here are some literacy tips to improve reading.

- Encourage your child to read at the same time every day. This may be in the evening before they go to sleep.- Students should read a variety of text types such as novels, short stories, newspapers and magazines.- If your child does not understand a word, have them look up the meaning and use it in a sentence.- Share your love of reading by discussing your favourite book at their age.- Ask your child questions about what they’re reading. This could include describing the character, explaining the plot and discussing what they have learnt from the book.- If your child really enjoyed a particular book, they should research the author to find out why the book was written and what other books might interest them.

PD/H/PE Faculty Focus...

The PD/H/PE Faculty has once again had a busy and exciting year. Years 7 – 10 have participated in a variety of traditional and not so traditional sports and physical activities, where a fundamental skills base has been developed.

The Year 10 dance unit has produced some very creative routines, whilst the year sevens have put their creative skills to good use in developing some artistic and clever rope skipping sequences. Theory lessons have included discussions on relationships, drugs and alcohol, road safety, resilience, health information and knowledge, wellbeing and many more personal development and health issues.

Year 11 have completed the preliminary course which involved units of work on the health of Australians, the body and how it performs and first aid. Students in these classes completed the module on first aid and have earned their first aid certificate.

Year 12 of course have been working very hard towards their HSC and have covered topics such as: Better Health for Individuals, Factors Affecting Performance, Improving Performance and Sports Medicine. We wish Year 12

the very best in all their subjects for the upcoming HSC.

The Year 9 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) classes have learned the history of a variety of sports, whilst gaining experience in some basic teaching of their peers. During Term 4, they will be participating in a Bronze swimming program as the lead up to the Water Sports excursion. This will involve sea kayaking, four wheel driving on Stockton beach, snorkelling, surfing and feeding the sharks at the shark and stingray centre. An exciting way to finish the year!

Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS) students have also worked hard throughout the year, engaging in some Olympic style sports and a challenging fitness unit in preparation for the Snow Sports excursion held in Term 3. We stayed at Cooba Motel in Berridale and commuted each day to the Perisher Blue Ski Resort. Most students had never seen snow before and certainly had never skied or boarded. The students took to the mountain on the first day, which resulted in some mixed emotions, as snow riding is not usually something that is mastered in one day. During the second day, more understanding and skills were

developed. By the end of the third day the students were begging for just one more day – a very tempting prospect! The whole experience was very new to most students and included a new appreciation for such a beautiful environment.

Year 9 Recreational Sport has been travelling away from the school for activities such as bowling, indoor rock climbing and mini putt putt. Investigations are currently underway for trialling the new ‘Flip Out’ and ‘Boing’ indoor trampolining centre at Castle Hill and Bella Vista for both this group of students and for the Year 8 sport groups. Instructions and safety talks are performed at both these centres to ensure maximum student safety and enjoyment.

Overall our department has enjoyed our role in the personal development of our students, via both the theory and practical programs implemented in our school. There are still many opportunities for our students in the remaining part of the year, including the previously mentioned Water Sports excursion for Year 9 and the annual Year 7 swim and surf program. We look forward to these activities and further preparation for next year’s programs.

Once upon a time there was a very special netball team from years 9/10 who competed in the Sydney North Regional Netball Gala day on the 10th September 2014. The team comprised of 10 elite athletes who played some top standard netball despite being up against some quality opposition. Shivana Mudaliar, Emily McCauley, Sarah Pernice, Taylah Massingham, Chloe Skewes Weir, Tahlia Clarke, Sally Parkinson, Isabella Stout, Kianna Munro and Lucy Fretus all played exceptionally well on the day winning 2 games by over 20 points! We were very fortunate to have two voluntary referees in Kayla Brown and Ebony Norton who did a great job at times under very difficult circumstances.

Throughout the tournament we were under pressure and in our first match against a representative standard Riverside Girls outfit we were completely out of our comfort zone! To our credit, however we persevered and in the final match of the day while experimenting with positions our new shooters namely Emily and Lucy managed an amazing

Sydney North Regional Year 9 /10 Netball

90% shooting average! The most unexpected goal of the day was scored by Sarah Pernice who while facing backwards and overbalancing scored a perfect shot which didn’t even touch the ring!

As the day progressed our combinations developed with the fluency in centre court established by Shivana, Kianna and Emily certainly giving us some much needed impetus while our defensive click of Tahlia, Lucy and Isabella worked tirelessly. Our goal scorers Taylah,

Sarah, Shivana were extremely accurate while Sally and Chloe proved their versatility that is until Chloe got “collected” by an over zealous opponent.

A huge thank you to Mrs Massingham and Mr Parkinson for their support and good luck to Kayla who is competing at the NSW All Schools Championships this weekend and to Isabella, Tahlia and Sally who will also be playing their grand final on the weekend.

It has been a remarkable year for Luke Millican in Year 10 who has achieved some great results in NSWCHS Lawn Bowls events after having to take a year off from the sport on health grounds.

Luke competed at the NSWCHS event at Warilla in June coming 4th in the singles and 4th in the pairs event. Luke was also selected to play in zone 5 seven a side NSW Championships coming 3rd place in the fours event which won him a bronze medal.

In August Luke competed in the NSWCHS Lawn Bowls at Wagga Wagga. The quality of the bowls was outstanding and at the end of this carnival he was selcted to play for the NSWCHS State Team.

NSW Combined High Schools Lawn Bowls

In September the NSWCHS State exchange event was held at Port Macquarie over three days. Luke and his team mates won the fours event bringing home a gold medal, a well earned achievement.

Over the course of this year, Luke who also plays in the Nepean District, has competed in the junior singles, triples and fours, winning all three, including the President Reserve Singles which is an open age event.

Luke also competed with his father in a pairs event at Taren Point. They were competing against some great opponents including some renowned Australian Bowls players. Luke and his dad ended up with the most points, taking out 1st place.

Sydney North Regional Orienteering Championships

The long journey began at 8.00am at school on Monday the 28th July as we headed for St Ives Showground to compete in the Sydney North Regional Orienteering Championships. After arrival and registration we did a short warm-up in the form of a brief practice course to familiarise us with the terrain and important landmarks. Working with others made it more enjoyable and successful and enabled our friends to remind us the two key points of orienteering namely to keep your map orientated and to check your bearings frequently! Soon after we were back at home base having a quick snack, rehydrating and concluding our final race preparation. Shortly after the organisers were summoning the competitors to the race start and with nearly 200 athletes in a small area the enthusiasm was infectious. We were issued with a map and only given 1 minute to study our current

position and work out which way to head for the initial checkpoint. It was a troubled start for a few, but, not long afterwards we got into our groove and found checkpoint after checkpoint with ease; that was until we reached checkpoint number 12! A challenging 2 metre high rock face had to be scaled to reach this checkpoint and this landmark certainly sorted out the contenders from the rest of the field. As we sprinted to the finish line we all agreed it had been a great event even though we only finished mid field which on reflection was a commendable effort for our first attempt. Our junior students who were also on debut (except Josh) earned the following amazing results; Sam Ostavich and Josh Webb bronze medals, Lauren Mansfield and Jarrad Bray silver medals and Loegan Ainsworth the gold medal! We really missed Callum Trethowan who had been one of our best performers at the corresponding championships

back in 2013, but he unfortunately was still recouperating from a large gash in his quad which he had endured the previous week during training. Congratulations to all our competitors who were fine ambassadors for their school including; Loegan Ainsworth, Ellie Allbon, Lauren Mansfield, Madelynn Morgan, Paris Hookham, Sam Ostavich, Kiara Steele, Jarrad Bray, Matt Clark-Donaldson, Jack Parker, Ryan Hogan, Nathan Mepstead, Paige Dowd, Harrison Rogers, Lucy Quaken, Josh Webb, Chloe Skewes-Weir, Claire Byrne, Sally Parkinson, Sarah Harris, Jordan Richards, Sarina Randoja and Shivana Mudaliar. Plus a huge “THANK YOU” to Mrs Ostavich, Parker, Bray, Mansfield, Ainsworth and Morgan who assisted with transport on the day. By Chloe Skewes Weir, Sarah Harris and Sally Parkinson
