The Liberal’s first budget, released a few weeks ago has been the biggest topic of passionate comment, outrage and even demonstrations not seen for decades on the streets.

feel for the elderly. My parents both worked all their lives and are self-funded retirees that are still taxed annually on their share

dividends and now stand to lose a concession card that allows them a few discounts to compensate for their significantly reduced returns.

I feel for the young also. Luckily my children have mostly completed all their tertiary studies but the cost of future tertiary studies is quickly becoming a weight of repayments for years. Families will do it tough as well with many losing family tax benefits and reduced child support payments. Hopefully some of these extreme measures will be significantly watered down or blocked in the Senate and some sort of middle ground will be achieved that is a lot fairer across the board.

Off my soapbox and onto the unbelievable weather. Shattering all the records, May has just brought us the longest, hottest period ever experienced since record-taking began!

Winter will be here soon.

COVER STORY

In the early hours of Monday 19th May, Galston residents were awoken to the sound of sirens as the RFS responded to a call out to Galston High School.

n arrival it was discovered that the library block was well alight and threatened the neighbouring structure. The

crews from stations such as Dural, Cherrybrook, Arcadia and Glenorie worked quickly to extinguish the fire before it spread. In the daylight of the next morning, it was clear to see the collapsed roof that had covered the internal offices and so made the firefighting efforts more difficult.

The school was closed to students for two days while the NSW Rural Fire Service and police investigated the cause of the fire. Sections of the external walls of the structure were deemed to be unsafe and demolition of these areas was carried out immediately by the fire service. Demolition has continued

under the Department of Education. In the meantime, two demountable buildings are being placed near the back ovals to house a temporary library and Year 12 study facility.

Investigations have shown that the fire began with an electrical fault.

Galston High School would like to thank our local community for their incredible support and consideration during this time.

The Dural and Round Corner Chamber of Commerce has established an account for the purpose of contributions to be made to the Galston High School Library Rebuilding Fund. The account details are: BSB: 082240 Account number: 848027761

Two dangerous incidents involving children occurred this week near schools, highlighting the need for drivers to take greater care in school zones.

t comes at the beginning of a joint campaign between Hornsby Shire Council and the NSW Police Force that is

targeting dangerous drivers.“These incidents clearly demonstrate the need for

action,” Hornsby Mayor Steve Russell said. “It’s a miracle nobody was killed in either incident and we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure that doesn’t happen.” General manager of the NSW Centre for Road Safety, Margaret Prendergast, praised Hornsby Shire Council’s work in school zones. “A great example of our local government work is with Hornsby Shire Council who, in partnership with Hornsby Heights Public School, have developed a parking advisory strategy which is on a banner outside the school so that parents and other road users are fully aware of their obligations,” she said.

The joint operation between the police and Council rangers will ensure that both parking and driving offences can be dealt with simultaneously. Illegal driving behaviours that are particularly dangerous around school zones include U-turns over double lines, speeding, mobile phone use and incorrect use of child restraints. Parking violations that pose a risk to young lives include double parking and ignoring parking signs as this obstructs the vision of drivers.

“Both Council and the police are determined to achieve the maximum level of safety we can around schools,” said Inspector Phillip Brooks from the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command.

“Working together on this joint campaign will help us achieve that.”

Young Endeavour Youth Scheme 2014 During January of this year, two students from Galston High School enjoyed the experience of a lifetime upon the Young Endeavour.

ourtney Pearce and Oliver Perrett were selected to board the tall ship in Devonport, Tasmania and set sail for Bass Strait and

eventually Sydney. Twenty-five other students combined to make up the Youth Crew to learn how to sail the ‘Endeavour’ under the guidance of ten navy-trained staff. On the first night, they were required to climb the thirty-eight metre mast - a challenging start to what lay beyond!

Watch groups were established, including overnight sessions, learned how to tie knots, do the rounds of the engines and generators, sing songs and of course, sail the ship. Leadership activities included listening to music, setting the storm sails in the very early hours of the morning with no help from the Watch leaders, made all the more precarious by the sea conditions.

The Youth Crew were rostered on to different areas to ensure competencies were learned in time for Command Day, where the young took over the entire running of the ship. Students were rostered on to work in the galley, learned how to set and furl the sails, were taught the ‘rules of the road’ and the etiquette involved in sailing. The navigation officer taught the crew skills in navigation to ensure safe arrival in Sydney Harbour once the Youth Crew took over. Happy Hour occurred every morning where the students had to polish the ship to a spotless Navy standard.

The skills that Courtney and Oliver learned are skills that will stay with them for life. The memories are etched in forever. This voyage pushed them to the limits and helped themdiscover their inner strengths and opened up their eyes to what is possible in life.

A big thank you to Bendigo Bank who, in conjunction with Galston High School, provided the sponsorship that supported this wonderful venture.

It was a life changing experience that will never be forgotten.

The teaching of history in our schools has been taken hostage by those who seek to enforce politically correct reinterpretations of our nation’s, and our world’s, past.

o ensure our next generation are exposed to the realities of history, I will be offering six Western

Sydney students to experience the ANZAC legacy in person on a ten-day tour of Gallipoli, the Western Front and London.

Students will visit ANZAC Cove, the Palace of Versailles, the Australian War Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, Churchill’s War Rooms, the Palace of Westminister and attend the Remembrance Day Service at Westminster Abbey.

I am particularly hopeful of attracting a wide cultural demographic to participate in this essay contest.

Students from all backgrounds should not only be encouraged to study history, but also be encouraged to study Australian history, to learn about their new homeland and her narrative, forged in adversity and war.

We are often encouraged to embrace our diverse ethnic communities, and I hope that this contest offers the opportunity for our diverse ethnic communities to embrace a uniquely Australian story. Our story, our history, our spirit.

Students aged 16-17 by 1.11.2014, and who live in The Hills Shire or a Local Government Area within MACROC or WSROC, are to submit a 1000-word essay entitled “Why the Centenary of ANZAC is Important for Modern Australia” by email to [email protected] by 5:00PM 31.7.2014.

The Chamber applauds the Federal Budget for its support of key infrastructure projects in NSW such as the Badgerys Creek airport and WestConnex while at the same time confronting Australia’s fiscal realities.

owever, the Chamber believes some decisions appear to move problems to State Governments while

others could cause damage to the economy if they are not reconsidered. “One of the most important decisions in this Budget is the investment of $2.9 billion for major road upgrades in Western Sydney to support the construction of a second Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek” said Chamber CEO, Stephen Cartwright. “We also welcome the Government’s broader $11.6 billion infrastructure package, which includes support for WestConnex and the Pacific Highway upgrade, and $5 billion to provide “incentives” for State Governments to recycle their assets.

“In relation to budget sustainability, our main concern is the seemingly partial nature of the tax system changes. Key tax increases such as the levy on those earning in excess of $180,000, and the indexation of the fuel excise have been balanced against a 1.5% reduction in company tax”.

Recently, I welcomed students from schools throughout the Sydney Hills to hear their ideas for reducing food waste.

he Speaking 4 The Planet event has seen students from local high schools speak, dance, act or perform in a bid

to make their case for the best ways to eat, think and save. Families these days are increasingly becoming more conscious of the fact that we all do tend to waste a lot of food. Becoming more mindful of food waste can have a positive impact on the environment but it can also place a lot less strain on a family’s finances. It just makes sense for people to be more mindful of how they spend their money and not be wasteful when at the shops or supermarket, both with their money and with fresh produce. 2012 waste audit results revealed that 37% of waste in the red bin was food waste – roughly 4.15kg per household every week.

I value the ideas of young people and know that they have a lot to offer the community.

REPRESENTING OUR AREA

The blaze which gutted the library at Galston High School and caused damage amounting to more than $2m may have disrupted the daily life of the school and alarmed local residents, but it has not dimmed the spirit of this close-knit and caring community.

arents, ex-students and a teacher from the school were members of the Rural Fire Service brigade which rallied

when the alarm was raised and fought to contain the blaze. Then, within hours of the news spreading through the community, the Dural Chamber of Commerce had set up a Rebuilding Fund to seek donations to ensure that the school returns to normal as quickly as possible.

Having visited and seen the damage for myself, I urge everyone who can contribute to do so as this school community is a most worthy recipient.

Now, I want to say a few words about the Federal Budget.

Despite the attempts of the Opposition and many within the media to misrepresent both the intent and content of the Budget, it should in fact be seen as visionary. Tough measures have been taken, but these are needed to lay the foundation for a stronger economy which will benefit all Australians. Don’t let the media’s antics deflect you from this indisputable fact.

As a great many constituents have done already, I invite you to provide me with your comments and thoughts on the measures contained in the Budget.

Students and teachers at Arcadia Public School celebrated a major historical milestone on Saturday as the local community marked the school’s 120th anniversary.

he School was opened in 1894 in an area known then as Galston Heights. The suburb was later

renamed Arcadia after the school founded by a retired Royal Navy officer G Shearston, who had visited Arcadia in Greece and thought the two areas shared similarities.

Arcadia School of Arts was set up as a house-to-house institution composed of three teaching stations, where the

teacher travelled from one station to the other by horse and sulky.

To mark the anniversary celebration, Arcadia Public School invited former students and community leaders including

Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean.Mr Kean said the historic anniversary was a major

milestone for Arcadia community to quality local education. In 1894 the school was started as a direct result of action and vision by the residents and parents of the Arcadia community.

Mr Kean said the buildings may have changed since 1894 but the school’s commitment to outstanding education has remained.

Pupils have come and gone since the school’s establishment but the values have remained unchanged.

You can see this with the school’s motto “Learn, Try and Enjoy.”

On the eve of the NSW budget it is worthwhile recapping on the last three years whereby the NSW Government has made substantial progress in rebuilding the State.

hrough economic reform, tight budget management and investment in infrastructure, we have created an

environment whereby NSW has the highest growth in economic activity and the lowest unemployment rate of all Australian states. The NSW economy has turned around from where it was five years ago – we now have the lowest unemployment rate in the country with almost 110,000 new jobs created since coming to government, the highest growth in economic activity and the strongest sales growth of all mainland States. We understand the important role business plays in growing the economy and delivering jobs which is why we raised the payroll tax threshold for business and we have reformed worker’s compensation. Through efficiencies to the electricity distribution and deregulation of the industry, businesses and households will experience annual reductions in average power costs. We are investing in essential services, having employed more than 5000 additional nurses, doctors, teachers and police officers. The evening could not have started better - clear skies, beautiful venue and great service.

usinesses flocked to Biviano’s from far and wide for a great evening of networking on 13th May. The event was organised by the NSW Business

Chamber under the watchful eye of Kerrie-Anne McLeod in conjunction with the Dural and Round Corner Chamber of Commerce. Our MC for the night was Jen Harwood, author of The Art Of Business Networking.

Our President, Rod Cuevas, started the evening welcoming all with a great speech, and Jen Harwood shared some of her excellent networking tips throughout the evening. The Soapbox participants all managed to pack a truckload of information about their businesses within 60 seconds and throw in a good deal or two at the same time - a mean feat to achieve! After such a successful evening, we can’t wait for the next one!

If you missed Rod Cuevas’ speech, it’s available for a limited time on www.duralchamber.org.au

Ted McKinley was born in Melbourne in 1927, the eldest of 5 children. The family moved to Sydney soon after and lived in Rose Bay where he went to school.

n 1952 he met his wife-to-be, Margaret Cape. Together they bought 13½ acres of land at Dural - £100 an acre. Ted and Margaret were married

at Numeralla, near Cooma. Ted spent the next three years building their home at Dural, finally moving there in 1961. Ted got a job with the NSW Electricity Commission where he worked for 35 years until he retired.

Ted and Margaret went on to raise eight children at Dural. He was a jack-of-all-trades and relished furniture-making. In the 1970s, he was Group Leader of Dural Scouts. He was a sports lover, an avid reader and he loved classical music. His offspring currently consist of eight children, 18 grand-children and two great-grand-children.

He enjoyed extraordinary physical health all his life but more recently he succumbed to the isolating disease of Alzheimer’s which eventuated in his admittance to The Donald Coburn Centre at Castle Hill for the last 2½ months of his life.

ROUND CORNER

Hornsby Shire Council is about to initiate a Community Consultation program aimed at seeking views and approval for a complete review of the entire Rural area (Dural to Wisemans Ferry).

s it has been 45 years since the last major review (establishment of the Galston and Glenorie villages), it

could be said that it’s not only about time, but none too soon! The pressures on all Local Governments from our State

Government (trying to cope with a significantly inadequate supply of housing) are immense – each Council has a housing objective that it is expected to fill.

Hornsby Council is trying to prevent the wholesale subdivision of its rural area whilst still showing growth and, at the same time, stop a lot of the ad-hoc development that is occurring now due to the lack of a good overall plan for the area.

Council wants to develop a plan that has the backing of a majority of the residents in the rural area – thus the Consultation Survey that is due to come out early in June.

It is envisioned that the 5-acre allotments within a

reasonable radius of the Villages (possibly 1-2km) be rezoned to 1 acre lots (to prevent further subdivision by SEPP5 initiatives); that other areas be allowed to have development zones for small undertakings e.g. retirement villages; that 25-acre lots be rezoned in some areas to 5-acre allotments; as well as reviewing other considerations relative to protected areas and the use of the surrounding lands, where these occur.

This is a major forward step for the Council, whose overall objective is to grow the area conservatively, whilst preserving the rural character that makes the region such an attractive area to live in.

It is vitally important that all of the concerned residents reply to the Survey – this is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to plan the area properly, and avoid the prospect of mass subdivision if nothing is done.

The residents of the Hornsby Shire Rural area, in conjunction with this progressive and visionary Council, can allow sensible growth whilst protecting the area for the next generation.

They should seize the opportunity with both hands!

After ten years as manager of Galston’s Bendigo Bank, Bernie Triebe has benched his calculator and is retiring to new adventures and freedoms.

uring his time as Manager, Bernie has steered the bank from a business with $50 million dollars of managed

funds to over $150 million dollars. When asked for some highlights Bernie said “Working with the same staff over 10 years was very rewarding but perhaps the standout is that during my tenure, the Bank has given away over $1.2 million to the local community”. Bernie was also pleased with the

support for the local schools and youth. “After all”, said Bernie, “our young people are our future.”

Replacing Bernie is Gary Mangan who joins Bendigo after 28 years with the NAB and 11 years as a Finance Broker. A long-time resident of the local area, Gary is married with 2 children, and he relishes the opportunity to build on the foundations left by Bernie and his team. “I look forward to contributing to the growth of Bendigo Bank for the good of our shareholders and the local community and businesses”, said Gary.

The changeover is effective June 9.

OAKHILL COLLEGE GOES ‘WACKY’Oakhill College staff and students donned their brightest and wackiest socks today in honour of Wacky Sock Day.

The event was a fundraiser promoted within the school to raise money for the 52 Year 11 students travelling to India and the 21 Year 11 students travelling to the Philippines in September. The trips are part of the Lasallians Without Borders projects within the school and funds raised will go to De La Salle brothers in India and the Philippines.

Prizes were awarded for the ‘Best Wacky Sock Winner’ for a student from each of Oakhill’s colour houses, a chocolate for the best wacky socks in every homeroom. The major prize was awarded to Patrick Manning in Year 7. Science teacher and Wacky Sock organiser, Theresa Towner, said “It was great to see so many students and staff embracing the day, wearing their wackiest socks and making a difference to people on the other side of the world. This is going to be an annual activity within our Science Program as it has led to a deeper understanding of the concept of classification in Science.”

WHY IS THIS SO?Year 4 Hills Grammar students are curious about how our world works. The 9-year-olds were required to create an original experiment that demonstrated either the properties of a natural material or the changing state of matter of a natural material. “After working on a number of experiments over six weeks, the children understood scientific method and confidently approached their own investigations with wonder

and enthusiasm.” Year 4 teacher, Margie Raymond explained, “They loved working on these projects and the Science Fair, as the grand finale, was an exciting and inspiring culmination of the unit of enquiry.”

Parents, friends and staff were invited to the Fair to discover the answers to some of life’s most perplexing questions.

ExCITING GYMNASTAfter completing a very successful year in 2013, Galston High School’s Imogen Florian has continued her success into 2014. In February, Imogen was awarded Gymnastic NSW’s Trampoline Age Athlete of the Year. Imogen will now be heading to the Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne during May/June. She is also competing at the Indo Pacific Championships in South Africa in July. Selection in the ‘Team Future’ – Gymnastic Australia’s Youth National Squad demonstrates the unending potential of this exciting young gymnast.

The Galston High School community wishes Imogen all the very best in her pursuit of excellence!

MIDDLE DURAL ROCKS SMALL SCHOOLS CROSS-COUNTRY Middle Dural Public School hosted our annual small school cross-country carnival last month. Students from Middle Dural, Hillside and Annangrove not only raced alongside each other, but also enjoyed a barbecue and played together on that spectacularly beautiful autumn day. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and older siblings who made the carnival a success – and, of course, to Mrs Urio, the brains behind the operation. Bunnings very generously donated water bottles to the event.

ANZAC DAYThe Anzac Day march and service is an event that always reflects well on both our local schools and our local community. The entire suburb of Glenorie is only three thousand strong, yet we manage a turnout of around two thousand to honour our servicemen and servicewomen, past and present, and to remember those who died in our service. Maddy and Caleb were so confident in delivering their readings. They performed at least as clearly and competently as the adults who spoke on the day. I know that Mrs Mills was very proud of all the Middle Dural students and families who attended the service.

SENIOR CAMPIn June, our Year 5 and 6 students will attend a NSW Sport & Recreation camp at Lake Macquarie, along with their peers from Hillside and Annangrove, and accompanied by Mrs McLennan. Look out, Mrs Mac! There is such a thing as too much fun…

To celebrate the Blue’s triumphant win, taking them one step away from Origin glory, I found myself having a small glass of rum - a QLD delicacy.

’m no cane toad so it certainly wasn’t the Bundaberg stuff in my glass! Rather, it was of the spiced variety - Kraken

Spiced Rum. I’m told by the boys at Kraken that the kraken is the most fearsome of all sea monsters that lies up to 3000 feet beneath the surface of the ocean. This dreaded behemoth has been known to attack ships, dragging fearing seamen to their deaths! It has been rumoured that a large shipment of dark, spiced rum was once taken down by a kraken in the Caribbean Sea and the resulting rum barrels drifted far and wide. This exotic Rum has been named in the kraken’s honour and is made from naturally sweet molasses from sugarcane grown naturally on Virgin Island riverbanks.

Aged in barrel for 24 months to impart classic dark rum flavours of cinnamon, ginger and clove, this drink invites the thought of food pairing. This spiced firewater can be used in a number of cooked dishes as a flavouring agent. Think rum balls/cakes or more commonly to macerate fruit used in fruitcakes. It is also used in marinades for some Caribbean dishes. If you want to be really crazy, it can even be mixed into ice-cream!

So if you’re looking for something to celebrate a pending Origin revival - Go, Kraken!

Most of us have been told to take our vitamins, but few people know why, and despite all the talk, vitamins remain something of a mystery.

itamins are organic substances, essential for maintaining life functions and preventing disease

among humans and animals and even some plants. They are found in very small quantities in food; certain health specialists recommend taking vitamin supplements to augment the supplies in food, while others insist that a well-balanced diet provides all the vitamins that an ordinary person needs.

Some vitamins, such as vitamin C and the B complex, are water-soluble, which means that they are excreted easily and must be ingested every day. Others, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, are fat-soluble and therefore are retained in the body’s fatty tissues. With such vitamins, there may be a danger of taking too much, but in the case of most vitamins, the greatest harm comes from not receiving enough.

Vitamin supplements remain a big business today; however opinions vary as to the importance of enhancing one’s diet with them.

David Campbell and John Bucchino have performed together all over the world, even recording soundtracks to Hollywood movies.

n this deeply personal and intimate show, Campbell and Bucchino return to the stage to talk about their

lives, careers and the songs that have bound them together. David Campbell is one of Australia’s foremost entertainers with four platinum albums, an ARIA and three Helpmanns. He has been hosting Nine Network’s Mornings with Sonia Kruger over the last few years, but is heading back to his roots of Broadway.

John Bucchino is one of New York’s most beloved composers, with songs recorded by artists such as Art Garfunkel, Liza Minelli and Kristin Chenoweth and performed at venues across the world – from the Sydney Opera House to the White House. His work with Harvey Fierstein A Catered Affair opened on Broadway in 2008.

Iconic English stadium rock band Queen, who have spent many fruitless years trying to desperately find a lead singer with half the charisma of tragically departed icon Freddie Mercury, have announce their first Australian tour in 29 years.

t seems Freddie has been replaced by Adam Lambert,

probably best known to Australians for finishing runner -up in the 2009 series of American Idol.

While Lambert, 32, doesn’t have Mercury’s giant stage presence, he has earned impressive reviews for his fine vocals and his own magnetism. Of his performance with Queen at the iHeart Radio concert in Las Vegas last September, Rolling Stone wrote: “Lambert astounded the audience on songs like We Will Rock You and the closing We Are The Champions and A Crazy Little Thing Called Love.”

As well as Queen, the Eagles and Bob Dylan have decided on a jaunt down under. The Eagles, six-time Grammy winners, are bringing what could be their final world tour to Australia. They last toured Australia in 2010, playing to more than 130,000 fans over 12 shows. Mr Dylan, who recently turned 73, has announced a month-long Australian tour, gracing our shores for the first time in over two decades.

Queen and Bob Dylan will arrive in August 2014, whilst the Eagles are set for February 2015.

We really are spoiled for choice.

Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) are now the largest and fastest growing segment of the super industry.

or trustees of SMSFs, managing your own fund and getting it right is very important. There are many

rules and regulations in the various laws that govern superannuation (super) that are designed to protect your retirement income. As a trustee, you need to adhere to the rules and know that you are ultimately responsible for the running of the fund, even if you use tax, financial and super professionals to help manage it.

Like other super funds, SMSFs are a way of saving for your retirement. Generally, the main difference between an SMSF and other types of funds is that members of an SMSF are the trustees. This means the members of the SMSF run it for their own benefit. There are myriad rules applying to superannuation. If this didn’t make the job of being the trustee of a self-managed super fund hard enough, the rules are contained in two different pieces of legislation: the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act and the Income Tax Assessment Act. Despite the complexity of these rules, trustees of an SMSF can avoid major breaches and penalties by being aware of the three areas where breaches carry the highest penalties.

They are of the rules relating to contributions, accessing superannuation, and what a super fund can invest in.

June heralds the beginning of the winter season which brings the close of an extraordinary autumn selling season and the real prospect of a record winter follow-up. The activity looks like continuing during the Winter months.

ignificantly improving affordability and pent-up demand for residential properties has flowed to our

local rural area. That, coupled with our local ‘hotspots’ in the Hills District which is driving demand for properties even more. We have buyers selling out of residential areas and moving onto acreage thus the entry point onto acreage have lifted.

Accessibility is another key factor pushing the local market. The Norwest Rail link means that transport will now be easier with many buyers stating that the “train line isn’t far away”. Confidence levels are still strong with most

prospective buyers. We often hear “the market is the market.” However

if you are looking to move during the 2014 period this Winter could be just the right time to make the decision. Traditionally, there reduced stock levels will give you the upper edge on the Spring market. It is worth checking out the market now and not hibernating over Winter! The buyers are certainly not waiting.

Having a baby is both an exciting and busy time. Before they even arrive, we are changing our lives to cater their needs.

afety first. By nature, children are inquisitive so it is important to

cover off a safety checklist before the arrive.

If you have blinds or curtains in your house, make sure any cords are able to be strung up high and out of reach to prevent any nasty strangulation accidents to your loved ones.

For all power points, I suggest installing outlet plugs in all power points that are not in use, and use power point safety covers for those items that are. Place any electrical cords behind furniture where you can.

If you have staircases in your homes, install safety gates to prevent any falls and injuries. Also, move away any furniture or shelving that may be placed near a window as toddlers love to climb.

And lastly, do not forget to consider where you store chemicals in your home. Make sure that any cleaning products you may own or other poisonous materials are stored somewhere safe and out of reach from children. Also make sure the items are not visible; remember, out of sight out of mind. Kids can be dangerously curious.

Don’t stress too much about the arrival of your baby; it’s as much a learning curve for you as it is them but please take some precautionary steps before they arrive to prevent any harmful accidents.

The latest in residential and industry trends is polished concrete floors.

olished concrete floors originated in warehouses and now are making their way up the interior design ladder and

are seen in luxurious residential projects. Concrete flooring is a modern internal choice which gives a modern industrial look that is both versatile and is highly functional.

Colour can also be added to give the concrete more appealing look. This diversity is ideal for just about any decorating style. Concrete is a material with both positive and negative energy for homeowners to consider prior to construction.

Concrete is a very hard-wearing and durable material, which is long-lasting. Concrete flooring is also an ideal and hygienic choice for people with allergies and asthma. Although it is a great flooring option, concrete flooring labor and materials can be very expensive. A great alternative, which is both durable and comes in an extensive range of colours and shapes, is a concrete imitation - glazed porcelain tile.

This concrete imitation is a great alternative and is more cost-effective. Here at World of Tiles Castle Hill, we have an amazing range to satisfy any project. So visit us during the week or over the weekend to view out amazing concrete imitation range.

Installing a pool cover has many benefits for both you and your pool.

Daisy solar pool blanket can help extend your swimming season through the action of the sun. Light

is allowed through the blanket, but is then trapped below the blanket adding the warmth of the sun to the pool water and keeping it there. This action can add up to 8 degrees to the temperature of your pool water. The blanket will also help in keeping out leaves and debris and also reduce water and chemical use. With the addition of a roller, these covers can be removed and replaced easily by one person.

If you already heat your pool through means of an electric or gas heater, a Daisy thermal pool cover is a must. Without a thermal cover, you are just pumping that costly heat straight into the atmosphere.

If your problem involves lots of leaves and sticks, then a Daisy WinterKleen pool cover may be the answer to your problems. These covers do not float on the water surface like the other two. With floats installed under the middle of the cover, any leaves and sticks are easy to sweep off or use a leaf blower to remove. These covers are easy to remove and install and are light and small enough to store in your pool shed or garage.

For a free quote on a pool blanket, contact the team at Dural Poolsmart to come on-site for a measure and quote, until the end of August 2014.

If you didn’t winterise last month, bring a water sample into Dural Poolsmart this week.

The colder months can drain the life from your lawn, leaving it a listless shadow of its normally lustrous summer self.

uring autumn and winter, your lawn needs as much sunlight as possible. Make sure that leaves dropped

from deciduous trees and lawn clippings are kept to an absolute minimum.

During the cooler months, grass grows much slower, so it’s a good idea to raise your cutting height a little so as not to damage it. As a general rule, it’s wise not to cut your grass lower than 2.5cm. If your lawn is a bit patchy and lacking in some areas, the colder months are the perfect time for seed germination without weeds impeding. Aeration will also help with the germination process.

Just because your lawn’s productivity decreases over winter doesn’t mean that your lawn loses its hunger for nutrients. Apply a fertiliser with a good mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

Before the harsh effects of winter kick in, it is a good idea to give your lawn one good last drink. This will also help to activate lawn fertilisers.

Exchange student Leticia Inoue is ready for all things Australian - except spiders and snakes.

eticia,18, will attend a local school as part of Rotary International’s Youth exchange program and will be

hosted by Glenhaven Rotary Club. She comes from a small town in Brazil.

The values of youth exchange are experienced not only by students involved, but also by host families, sponsoring clubs, high schools and the entire community.

While with Glenhaven Rotary club, Leticia will live with several club members, friends of Rotary and their families.

The international friendship between the Epping and Tokyo-Ikebukuro Rotary Clubs was celebrated with a morning tea in Hornsby Shire Council Chambers today.

he two groups, which are sister clubs, have had a relationship for 43 years and regularly make visits to

each other’s country. “I am honoured to be hosting this event with our

friends from the Tokyo-Ikebukuro Rotary Club, who share a long history of collaboration and close friendship with the local Epping Rotary Club,” Mayor Steve Russell said. “I hope that they enjoy their time in Hornsby Shire and that their relationship with our area continues to flourish.” President-elect of the Tokyo-Ikebukuro Rotary Club Shohei Noguchi highlighted the benefits of the relationship, such as joint projects like that which raised money for children

in the Philippines. “We would like to further tighten the relationship and strengthen the friendship between our two clubs,” Mr Noguchi said.

Both clubs currently hold an event each April to celebrate one another. The Epping club previously raised around $6000 to help Tokyo-Ikebukuro after a tsunami devastated the area in 2011.More can be found on our website www.galstonrotary.org.au/ or on facebook.

Glenorie Vet Clinic partners Bruce and Trish Hindmarsh and Michael Hawkins.

The partnership has been a very effective and amicable one, and the practice has grown over the years to now have four full-time Veterinarians and 3 full-time nurses, and 2 part-time nurses.

“Glenorie Vet Clinic would not be where it is today without the tremendous support the Vets get from the nursing staff, and those clients, who come to Glenorie from the local and not so local area,” said Bruce.
