Doctoral researchersTwo of our current doctoral researchers share their experiences of studying for a PhD at the School of Business and Economics.

Bader outlines the SBE PhD communityI have been a part of several academic institutions in my academic career. Each one has its own advantages, but in Loughborough’s School of Business and Economics, there are various things that I admire.

Firstly, the welcome and greeting I have received as an doctoral researcher is notable as it helps me engage with my colleagues. The School provides a great working environment for PhD researchers. This can be seen through various activities, such as the PhD monthly tea meetings and the School of Business and Economics annual conference.

The staff in the School are very helpful and willing to support me whenever required.

Secondly, SBE frequently provides a variety of seminars which enhance our academic knowledge and keep us updated with recent work in different areas.

Importantly, Loughborough University is rated top in the UK for student experience, so no one should be worried about the activities available here!

Our green campus is one of the largest in Europe, which is perfectly suitable for those who enjoy sports facilities.

–“As an international student, I’ve always felt that I have been part of the community for a long time because the school has many

international students and there is also a Saudi society at the University!”

Albayan, Doctoral researcher shares her experiences Amongst the different universities that offer a PhD programme in my area of research, ‘information management’, I chose to join Loughborough University. The three main motivations that influenced my choice were the excellent academic reputation in my area of interest that the School holds, the effective educational environment and the exceptional student support offered.

It is a place where every PhD student aspires to unlock their potential to make a real difference in society through their research.

Once you have joined SBE, you are enrolled in a research training programme which offers an opportunity to develop your research skills and knowledge of different research philosophical traditions and methods. You will be assigned two academic supervisors to help you to refine and develop your initial research proposal and to produce a final research question which is of interest to you and your supervisors. An internal examiner will also be assigned to review your work and advise on how to enhance your contribution further.

At the end of each year, an annual SBE PhD conference will take place to provide you with the opportunity to present your work and receive feedback from your peers and experts in your field. In short, the School makes every effort to ensure that PhD students are well-prepared to maximise their potential and to carry out high-quality research.

During the course of your studies, you are treated as a member of staff and offered the opportunity to be involved in various activities, including teaching if you wish. This allows you to develop your academic and teaching skills. Further research training and skills development courses run throughout the year at Loughborough Doctoral College for all PhD researchers across the campus. Engaging in such courses and workshops will expand your knowledge and enable you to meet new people, enhance your interpersonal skills and integrate with other PhD students.

Loughborough enjoys a strong sense of community and promotes cultural and social diversity. People from varied religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds study and work together, and their sense of mutual understanding and respect lies even beyond the campus boundaries.

A variety of student advice and support services are provided on campus and the support for international students at the university is outstanding. It is no wonder that Loughborough is the UK’s top-rated university for student experience.

–“Being a PhD researcher at Loughborough School of Business and Economics is a rich and transformational experience. It is a place

where every PhD student aspires to unlock their potential to make a real difference in society through their research. It is a very supportive,

friendly, responsive, challenging and rewarding environment that is surrounded by a highly committed and motivated team”

Research Centres represent the key areas of our research strength; Research Interest Groups are emerging areas of research; and Discipline Groups are the fundamental areas of teaching and research in which individual staff members are grouped.

Research CentresThe School has developed four collaborative Research Centres to further enhance its international reputation for ‘research that matters’. These Centres are key components of the School’s research agenda and aim to be instrumental in shaping policy and practice across both the public and private sector.

Centre for Information ManagementThe Centre’s main purpose is to undertake internationally recognised research for the benefit of the individual, organisations, government and society.

In particular, the Centre aims to evidence the significance and value of information; challenge thinking and practice around information management; and improve performance through analysis, interpretation and judgement of information.

Centre for Professional Work and SocietyThe Centre conducts independent research on issues affecting work, professions and society. Members of the Centre deliver high-quality research that contributes to national and international debates around the changing landscape of contemporary professional work.

Centre for Service ManagementThe Centre conducts multi-interdisciplinary research relevant to the private, public and third sector service organisations; providing new knowledge to inform academics and educate managers through the exploration of theory and practice of service management.

Centre for Productivity and PerformanceThis Centre focuses on research in different fields of productivity, efficiency and performance measurement, and related areas, such as industrial organisation, and decision and risk analysis. Its research portfolio aims to assist decision and policy makers in evaluating and improving the performance of firms and public sector bodies.

Our areas of researchResearch degrees (PhD/MPhil ) available in Business and Management,

Economics and Information Management.

Accounting and Financial ManagementThis group’s research interests span a broad spectrum of methodologies ranging from social science-orientated techniques to applied financial economics. The key objective of group members is to produce research that is rigorous but also relevant to contemporary accounting and finance issues/debates. Many group members possess professional as well as academic qualifications.

A number of group members serve/have served on prestigious academic and practitioner boards, as well as holding editorial positions in key academic journals in their respective fields.

EconomicsThe Economics Discipline Group undertakes rigorous and relevant applied research in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, with a view to applying the powerful and flexible tools of economics to both understand and inform the economic decisions of individuals, firms, governments and other institutions.

The group’s research interests and expertise span five key areas, namely applied econometrics and productivity analysis, financial economics and banking, monetary economics and development, international economics and trade, and industrial economics.

Discipline Groups

Human Resource Management and Organisational BehaviourThis group is an interdisciplinary social science teaching and research group that brings together academics interested in a broad range of ‘people management’ issues. Psychology and sociology are major disciplinary influences, but some members of the group also take historical and geographical approaches. The Group conducts research in three broad areas: organisation studies, work psychology and employment relations, with output ranging from traditional academic scholarship to work with a significant impact on public policy and management.

Information ManagementThe research carried out by the Information Management Discipline Group is led by the Centre for Information Management. The Centre undertakes world-leading research on the effective management of information and knowledge assets, investigating big data, mobile technologies, email, social networks and social media, open and linked data, knowledge management in the voluntary sector, and much more. For more detail, please refer to the Centre for Information Management entry on page 10.

International Business, Strategy and InnovationThis group comprises teachers and researchers whose work draws on multiple disciplines including economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology and political science. The Group is committed to the advancement of world-class management scholarship and to the development of ideas that will help managers make better sense of some of the most complex problems of globalisation and the technology revolution.

Management Science and OperationsThis group is multidisciplinary, bringing together expertise in operations, systems and decision making. The group is committed to improving management practice by designing and implementing analytic approaches that help tackle routine, strategic or policy problems. The approaches are typically supported by models that can often be represented mathematically or visually and built using specialist software.

Marketing and RetailingThis group is a team of dynamic, research-oriented individuals with expertise in a number of key areas within marketing and retail. The Group is extremely successful in achieving its primary aim of advancing knowledge and thinking in these disciplines through high-quality, basic and applied research.
