Vermont Ave., Los Angeles—Thisprojectenvisionsarevitalized,pedestrian-friendlyVermontcorridor,anchoredbyUSCNeighborhoodOutreachafter-schoolprogramsinthevisual,musicalandtheatricalarts.

Vermontwouldbebuiltouttoitszoneddensity—threeorfour-storybuildingswithsidewalkretail—andthedevelopmentofneighborhoodparkingfacilitieswouldencouragepedestrianactivity.

Amusicafter-schoolprogramwouldanchor29thStreeteastofVermont.Thebuildingwouldreplaceatwo-storystripmall,withanadjacentmixed-useblockreplacingasingle-storyhardwarestore.

Terengganu, Malaysia—TasikKenyirisanartificiallakeinruraleasternMalaysiaresultingfromtheconstructionofahydroelectricdam.Previouslyavirginrainforest,thelandscapehasbeentransformedbyintensiveagricultureandisnowbeingredevelopedasan“eco-tourist”destination.

DesignedincollaborationwithMirShariffudenfromUniversitiMelaya,thisprojectistheresultofasix-week

SitePlanwithVegetation

Tasik Kenyir Eco-Tourism CenterdesigncharretteinKualaLumpur.This“eco-tourism”visitors’centerattemptstodiagramandexplainthesuccessivestagesofTasikKenyir’sdevelopmentwhileprovidingrecreationalfacilitiesforbothlocalandtravelingvisitors.

Thevisitors’centeranticipatesvaryingseasonaldemandandclustersdisparateactivitiesintofunctionallyredundantinterpretivezonestoallowthebuildingstoadapttobothlocals’andtourists’needs,dependingonthetimeofyear.

Eachpavilioncarriesguestrooms,exhibitspace,andasupplementarypublicprogram.

Thecenter’sthematicpavilionsobjectifythelandscapebywrappingthemselvesinsubmarine-likecocoons.Floatingabovethelandscape,thefacilityinvitesvisitorstoexperiencenaturalandartificialecosystemsonequalterms,ratherthanattemptingtorecreateanidealized“natural”state.
