News from John Muir Health FoundationISSUE 13 | SPRING 2019
B R I E F I N G S
The O-arm™ allows John Muir Health surgeons to perform a
CT scan in the operating room and provides a safer and more
reliable workflow. “Financial contributions from donors help
support this technology,” says Max Merkow, M.D. (pictured left).
John Muir Health Gala Is “Out of This World”ANNUAL EVENT RAISES RECORD $2.25 MILLION FOR NEUROSCIENCES SERVICES
Liftoff occurred on November 3 when more than 700 guests gathered for the fifth annual Celebrate John Muir Health! Gala. Themed “Out of This World,” the event was held at the Concord Jet Center in a private hangar generously donated by the Hofmann Family.
Proceeds from the 2018 gala will help pur-chase advanced technologies and state-of-the-art equipment for John Muir Health’s Neurosciences Services. In fact, funds from the gala have already purchased one such piece of equipment: the O-arm™ Surgical Imaging System.
The O-arm™ allows neurosurgeons to more precisely map and place devices in the exact right
spot. “The O-arm™ has transformed spine surgery and surgeries on patients with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s and essential tremor disease,” says John Muir Health neurosurgeon Max Merkow, M.D. “When nonoperative treatments are unable to provide patients with adequate relief, we can use real-time and computer-navigated guidance to make precise repairs, resulting in less postopera-tive pain and a quicker return to normal life.”
“Technology is intertwined with our work, and financial contributions from donors help support this technology,” says Merkow. “The current and future implications of this technology are ‘astronomical.’ ”

The stars were aligned on November 3, 2018, for this year’s Celebrate John Muir Health! Gala as we celebrated and raised a record $2.25 million for the “Out of This World” Neurosciences Services at John
Muir Health. The fifth annual event was once again held at the
Concord Jet Center in a private hangar generously donated by Jean and Lisa Hofmann. More than 700 guests came ready to be transported to planets far, far away, including a live countdown and blastoff to kick off the event.
I want to personally thank everyone who spon-sored, supported and attended the event this year. We couldn’t have done it without you!
Margie MurphyCO-CHAIR

help us support and celebrate the extraordinary work of John Muir Health, the many lives saved by talented and caring staff, and the world-class community hospital we have right in our own backyard.
If you were not able to join us in 2018, you will want to watch the inspirational video (see QR code below) that tells the story of two patients whose lives were changed forever by the exceptional care they received by John Muir Health’s Neurosciences Services team (see back cover for more details).

“John Muir Health Saved My Life”GRATEFUL PATIENTS SHARE
THEIR STORIES
Vicki Goodwin and Shawn Ferron have a common bond and a new connection to one another that will last a lifetime. Both were featured at this year’s gala as patients whose lives were transformed by the extraordinary care they received by John Muir Health’s Neurosciences Services.
A debilitating movement disorder forced longtime John Muir Health nurse Vicki Goodwin to quit the job she adored. “I was completely disabled,” says Goodwin, “and I cried every day because I thought my life was over.” Medication had become ineffective for Goodwin but John Muir Health neuro physicians were able to offer her an option with an outcome she never dreamed
possible. “John Muir Health’s ability to perform deep brain stimulation gave me my life back. I donate because you never know what’s around the corner. I owe my life to John Muir Health.”
In April 2018, Shawn Ferron suffered a stroke while hiking. “I couldn’t believe it,” says Ferron. “I’ve always considered myself extremely healthy, so stroke never crossed my mind.” Neuro physicians at John Muir Health determined that Ferron was a candidate for thrombectomy, a procedure to remove a blood clot
from inside an artery or vein that is performed under emergency circumstances to save a patient’s life.
“I am alive and healthy today, in part, as the result of the generosity of John Muir Health donors who provide funding for advanced technologies,” says Ferron. “I credit the John Muir Health physicians and staff with my ability to talk and walk, and consider myself the luckiest man alive.”
