When we in- formed you in our last newsletter that, due to budget cuts, there might not be a yearbook this year, your immediate response with donations was very gen- erous. In the meantime, a new teacher has volunteered his time after school to assist seniors, who will not get aca- demic credit for it, but have also volun- teered their time after school. The money that has been collected from your donations earmarked for the year- book will ensure that the yearbook will be completed. Because of you, there will be a 2012 yearbook. We would like to acknowledge you on a special donor page in the yearbook. We are already starting our campaign to raise money for the 2013 yearbook. According to Principal Harrison, next year we will need $15,000 to make sure that they will have a year book class where the students will get academic credit. CollegePath LA (CPLA) has helped over 100 Marshall students help with college exploration and applications over the last twoyears. As we expand our program, we would like to partner with alumni to provide even more services. Here are ways you can getinvolved:1. SAT Preparation Classes: Despite strong grades, many of our Marshall students do not score well on the SATs and this limits their college options. Weknow that familiarization with the testing format can help significantly. We are raising money to offer professional test prepara-tion classes. Our goal is to provide classes to 60 students for a cost of $7,000. This will include 22 hours of instruction, and three simulated tests. We have received a matching grant from the Mitzvah Fund for $3,500, and we are hoping you will match this fund dollar for dollar. Please support the SAT Prep Class with a donation. Checks should be made payable to the JMHS Alumni Association, withCPLA in the memo section. No amount is too small.2. Career Exploration: It is clear that motivation is key to keeping students engaged in school and a dream career often creates this motivation. InSeptember, College Counselor Tricia Bryan organizes a College and Career Fair in conjunction with back-to-school night (dateTBA). We would like to expand this fair. If you are interested in participating, please email Tricia Bryan at [email protected] you in advance for supporting these important efforts. Please feel free to contact us for any reason.Susan Philips and Lori [email protected], [email protected]

In a very special ceremony, the court was renamed in honor of the late Hal Uplinger, the only man from Marshall to ever playin the NBA. Several members of his family including his widow Hazel, daughters Tracy and Sarah and son John and a grandsonwere on hand to unveil the painting on the far wall of the gym across from the bleachers now reading "Lou Wheeler Gym/HalUplinger Court.” Additional sports news: This year's girls varsity team were Los Angeles City Division 3 runners-up, advancing tothe State Playoffs before bowing out in the first round. Congratulations to the MarshallCulinary Arts students who won 3rdplace in a districtwide competitionsponsored by Mrs. Cubbison'sStuffing Mix. The student chefs areteam captain Crystal Iniguez andmembers Jose Quezada, NicoleCaceres, and Maria Gonzalez.Their amazing teacher is Andi Phillips. Here is their recipe forFlavors of Fall Savory Bread Pudding! We taste tested this casserole at our student run cafe. Itwas a huge hit! If you are not cooking for a crowd you caneasily cut the recipe in half…..but, we didn't have any problemwith leftovers. Enjoy!

˘ cup unsalted butterI small red onion, minced1 pound pork or turkey Italian sausage (casings removed)1 (29 ounce) can of solid pack pumpkin2 cups small curd cottage cheese5 ounces grated parmesan cheese1 teaspoon dried rubbed sage1 teaspoon grated nutmeg6 cups half & half8 large eggs˚ teaspoon ground chipotle powder2 - 12 ounce boxes Mrs Cubbison's Classic SeasonedDressing

Melt the butter in a large skillet. Turn the heat to low andadd the minced onions. Cook, stirring frequently until the on-ions are soft. Add the sausage and continue to cook until thesausage is browned and crumbly. Allow it to cool slightly. Meanwhile start preparing the pumpkin filling. In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin, cottage cheese, parmesan cheese, sage, and nutmeg. Add the cooled sausage and onions to thepumpkin mixture. In another large bowl whisk the half and half, eggs and chipotlepowder. To assemble the casserole, cover the bottom of a 4 quartcasserole dish with one 12 ounce package of the Mrs.Cubbison's Classic Seasoned Dressing. Use a ladle to coverthe dressing with half of the egg mixture. Gently spoon thepumpkin mixture over the bottom layer. Cover the pumpkinlayer with the other 12 ounces of Mrs. Cubbison's ClassicSeasoned Dressing. Ladle the remaining egg mixture over thetop of the casserole. You may need to do this slowly as theegg mixture will need some time to soak into the dressing.Refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake one hour or until the until the custard is set and thetop of the pudding is light golden brown. Allow to cool for 15minutes. Yield: 16 servings
