Hello JMHS wolves! So far we’re doing great

in terms of starting the New Year right with

and ample amount of service events.

We’ve made such a huge impact to

people in our neighborhood by attending

the Silver Lake Clean Up and supporting

runners during the 10k Chinatown

Firecracker Marathon. In addition, I find it

amazing how sophomores and juniors of

our club are getting involved in political

campaigns! Phone Banking and organizing

data for Matt Szabo definitely is a small step

that will start something big. Speaking of

something big, did everyone get their “ON”

at the Region 7 Ohana Night!? Cause I sure

did. Bonding with our region not only is fun,

but it also shows how big of a club we are

and the amount of people who are willing

to make a difference in our community. But

most importantly, Congratulations to Arbyn

Olarte, Tiffany Chan, Michelle Simbajon,

and Ernestine Hong for being the new

chairs of the JMHS Board! Wolves, please

look forward to an inspiring term of service

with your new Key Club board.

Your Bulletin Editor,

Arianna Dela Rosa

Silver Lake Clean Up

The Silver lake Cleaning event was one that would

not be soon forgotten. Showing up I wasn't

expecting to be doing much, maybe pick up some

trash, broom here and there however once started

there was so much work to be done and so much

effort put in by everyone. Starting one's weekend

pulling out weeds and cleaning up the streets

certainly doesn't sound like much fun but it became

an incredibly fun event thanks to the wolves who

showed up to help. Every day I ride the bus that

passes by the area we helped clean up and I never

really thought about how much it could help just

pulling out weeds from cracks, throwing trash in

proper containers and generally making the area a

lot cleaner. There is still a lot to do for our community

and I am certainly looking forward to helping with a

smile on my face and my wolves all around.

Firecracker 10K Marathon

Chinatown has always been part of

my "native land" and I've always

wondered one day whether or not I'd

get the chance to volunteer there.

This was accomplished on a dark

Sunday morning for Chinatown's

Firecracker 10k marathon. Waking up

at 5 a.m. alongside my fellow key

clubbers wasn't all that fancy but the

work we'd done was interesting. We

began our early day by separating

completion medals that we'd later

hand out to the runners. It was really

fun considering the fact that some of

the volunteers were friends with some

of the runners. It was even more fun

watching the little kids run the 2k. Later

on we walked to the Golden Dragon

Seafood Restaurant to be served

some of the most well-known Chinese

dishes seated with other organizations

and divisions that shared the same

interest as our John Marshall Club.

Ernestine Hong

The 35th Annual Firecracker 10k sounded like a really exciting

event to go to on a Sunday, then I discovered that I needed to

be in Chinatown by the wee hours of the morning. But that did

not stop me from taking the opportunity of providing service for

other people, plus we were promised to be given FREE food

after volunteering. So I set my alarm clock to wake me very early

in the morning and took the train to Downtown. When I arrived, I

was stunned by how many people I saw already working to set

up the event, they were all filled with energy and had smiles

across their faces, while I just watched half asleep, shivering

under the cold morning weather. I was finally placed in a group

and immediately were put to work. We did things such as set up

tents , move ramps and fences, and tie medals that we were to

give to the runners after they completed the race. After that we

were given the chance to explore the corners of Chinatown

where people gave free samples of food and play in booths

where people can win prizes. I myself won two small bags of

rice! By eight o'clock all the volunteers lined up by the finish the

line to award runners with medals that they deserved. The

amount of smiles and joyful expressions I saw in the runner’s

faces when handed the medals was amazing, it inspired me to

continue to make people happy by serving the,. The runners

were not the only ones awarded, you know? After the event,

the volunteers were seated in a fancy Chinese restaurant where

they served us SO MUCH delicious food that people had to

come home. It was a perfect way to end the day. The 35th

Annual Firecracker 10k was an event to remember and I hope

there would be more events like this to come.

Member of the month

Arbyn Olarte

John Marshall Key Club bestows Member of the Month to enthusiastic member, Arbyn Olarte. In his first year of high school and Key Club, he has been quite active. He attended our monthly Ronald McDonald House. He and other fellow Key Clubbers also gave our medals to the runners at the 35th Annual Firecracker 10k in Chinatown. He is helping the community at such an early age. Even though he is still timid, shy, and new to the club, he is always encouraging his friends to come to our general meetings in school. Arbyn has been elected Sophomore Representative for our school’s club for the 2013-2014 term. Arbyn is a great addition to the club, helping the community and encouraging others to join the fun as well.

Officer of the month

Marian Montano

John Marshall Key Club would like to award Marian Montano as Officer of the Month for February. Marian, or as we like to call her, Mai, has been a stupendous officer from the beginning of her term to now. As she has risen from being a member, to Freshman Representative, and finally has achieved her well-deserved role of Vice President! She has collected many hours in both the club and service departments. Although her title was Freshman Representative, she not only brought along many new freshman faces to our club, but she also helped out in many other ways. She has been a blessing to us, and she will be a godsend to anyone who has to work with her in the future. If there could be anyone who deserves the title of Officer of the Month, even officer of the year, it would be Marian Montano.
