OUR MISSION The mission of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is to collect, preserve and interpret the material evidence of the Florida Jewish experience from 1763 to the present for Jews, non-Jews, Florida residents and visitors alike. We seek to examine how Jews form part of a dynamic mosaic of ethnic groups: all seeking to balance the continuity and traditions of their heritage with the values and customs of a larger society. Our focus is to explore the richness, diversity, complexities and legacies of the Jewish contributions in Florida, historically and culturally within the nation and throughout the world. We strive to illuminate the diversity that exists in Florida by providing a lens through which history can be viewed by everyone.

The Museum, while inspired by Jewish history in Florida, provides programs that resonate with all communities and all learners. The Museum depicts the immigrant experience and acculturation process of everyone’s family; a shared experience as illustrated through our exhibitions, public programs and collection of primary sources. Our educational programs are rooted in the benchmarks and desired outcomes of the NextGen Florida Sunshine State Standards, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and adopted Common Core Standards.

THE FACILITY   The Museum is housed in two former restored synagogue buildings, both on the National Register of Historic Places. The 1936 Art Deco building (R) includes such architectural features as a Moorish copper dome, marble bimah (altar) and 80 stained-glass windows. The other edifice (L), built in 1929, was home to Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation. In addition to both buildings’ value as cultural resources, they also provide an exemplary opportunity for classroom discussion of architecture, design, aesthetic principles and sense of community. A skylighted Bistro connects the two buildings. We Supply The Adventures: You Supply The Inquiring Minds! Our goal is to make your visit an exciting adventure in Florida history and culture. Our programs are designed to complement your classroom curriculum while engaging, inspiring, stimulating and motivating your students to THINK and LEARN. As your students enter the world of one ethnic group, they will experience a journey of self-awareness about their own heritage.

CORE EXHIBIT  MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida

Guided Tour (Recommended for Grades 3-12) Explore Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present through the immigrant experience. Students are guided through the history of one ethnic group’s contributions to Florida’s history, illustrated through artifacts and primary sources, learning lessons of cultural diversity in a museum setting.

Films A choice of two 20-minute films are included in the tour. • Four Families (recommended for Grades 3-8)

Focuses on the diverse experiences of families who immigrated to Florida from different countries and time periods, as examples of the acculturation process of all families.

• Jewish Life in Florida (recommended for Grades 9-12) Highlights the contributions of Jewish Floridians to the development of the state, as inspiring examples for all students.

Jewish Life in Florida Scavenger Hunt (Recommended for grades 3-8) Students are provided with a list of questions about Jewish life in Florida. The answers can be found among the artifacts, photos, maps, films and letters of our core exhibit. Students may work individually or together on teams to hunt for answers and, afterward, come together to share their findings. This activity provides a student-centered, inquiry based, educational experience that places the learning in the students’ hands.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish: A Gastronomic Look at Florida Jews & Food ON VIEW THROUGH October 5, 2014 Don’t miss the final days of this exhibit…. BOOK NOW! “Food” is a universal theme that relates to customs and traditions for all ethnic groups in our state. This exhibit comprises Floridian Jews in the food industry who grow, prepare, distribute, cook and serve the foods we love. The exhibit will prompt students’ exploration of the role food plays in developing cultural identity, assimilating, and maintaining and passing down traditions. A Creative Twist: Last year’s Annual Writing Contest garnered 379 statewide entries on the subject: “Describe an ethnic food or recipe that spells “tradition” in your life! See page 13 for this year’s writing prompt!

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION  From a Coin Toss into Politics: The Life of a Senator SEPTEMBER 16, 2014 - MARCH 22, 2015    The exhibit offers valuable insight into Florida politics, history and how leadership shaped and continues to shape our current landscape. This colorful exhibit includes photographs, documents, official correspondence and artifacts illustrating Senator Richard B. Stone’s fascinating Florida story starting from his early years on Miami Beach. The exhibit includes highlights of his service as Florida State Senator, Secretary of State, U.S. Senator and his prestigious Ambassadorships in Central America and Denmark. These authentic artifacts create an intimacy with educators seeking to transmit leadership figures, civic processes and vision “up close and personal.” Stone removed his office doors, reinforcing his sponsorship of a “Sunshine Law” and transparency in government. Its passage would later serve as a model for other states.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION THE CHOSEN: Selected Works from Florida Jewish Art Collectors NOVEMBER 14, 2014 – MARCH 8, 2015  Historically, the Jewish people have focused on the importance of remembering the past and teaching for future generations. There are many ways in which to make that connection. Art is one of the vehicles for linking the past and future. An art collection provides insight into the life of the collector - why and how they started collecting, how they choose the pieces they acquire, how their collections enhance their lives and what their collection says about them personally – their passions, vision and philosophy. This exhibit is used as a starting point to help students explore what is important to them and what type of collection of materials they would put together to illustrate their own personal image and tell the story of their lives.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

THE SEVENTH DAY: Revisiting Shabbat APRIL 14, 2015 – OCTOBER 25, 2016    In many religions, the Sabbath is considered a day of rest. In Jewish tradition, Shabbat is observed in many ways, including communal worship participation, cooking a special meal, resting from work or physical activity and scheduling time to reflect on life outside of our daily routines. This exhibit features contemporary and often provocative depictions of the Sabbath through the works of leading international artists. In an era when technology and culture have eroded the boundaries separating work, play and relaxation, this exhibit presents new possibilities and definitions of the 'day of rest.' It serves as an instructive, practical and refreshing connection for students to traditional community and challenges them to “turn off” and experience a tech-free day!

Creative Writing Contest: “Stepping Up to Lead”  Submission deadline: Friday, November 14, 2014

Exhibit Summary: The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU offers this contest in conjunction with our upcoming exhibit: From a Coin Toss into Politics: The Life of a Senator, on display from September 16, 2014 – March 22, 2015. This exhibit highlights the life and many leadership roles of Senator Richard Stone, who was Florida’s second and most recent Jewish U.S. Senator (1975-1980). Senator Stone’s official leadership career spanned 40 years of service, though his first act of public policy advocacy actually occurred when he was eight years old, lobbying for the building of a median on Washington Ave on Miami Beach! Answering the question, “What makes a good leader?” is difficult, since there is no one-size-fits all definition of leadership. A leader is generally defined as someone who guides or influences others, either in a formal setting, such as a political office, or an informal setting, such as directing the efforts of a group project. WRITING PROMPT: Tell us about a specific incident when you, or someone you admire, used leadership skills to effect positive actions and/or changes. Include details of the leadership skills that were applied and any challenges you or the leader had to overcome to produce the desired results.

Who is eligible? All Florida students in grades 6-12. One entry per student.

You may submit a poem, monologue, dialogue, essay (narrative, expository, or persuasive), or short story. Submissions will be scored as follows:

1. Follow the writing prompt closely. Define leadership as it relates to the situation you are describing. Tell about something that has special meaning for you and why it was significant. (35 points)

2. Use metaphor, vocabulary, and expressive language to evoke feelings. (20 points) 3. Make sure that your writing is compelling, that it inspires and/or engages people. (15 points) 4. Use main ideas and details in an essay, or creatively build momentum in your story or poem. (15 points) 5. Use proper writing skills: grammar, spelling, writing rules and also follow the guidelines below. (15 points)

Guidelines: Submissions must be in 12-point font on 8 ½” x 11” white paper, maximum length of 500

words. Completed application forms must be attached and can be downloaded from the Museum’s website: www.jewishmuseum.com.

Deadline: All submissions must be received by mail or delivery by Friday, November 14, 2014, 5pm

Send to: JMOF-FIU, 301 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL 33139. No email entries accepted. Prizes: Prizes will be awarded to (3) middle school and (3) high school students as follows:

1st Prize: $125 2nd Prize: $75 3rd Prize: $50

The awards ceremony at the Museum will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2014. The winners’ classes will also receive a free school group tour of the exhibit.

FLORIDA JEWISH HISTORY MONTH JANUARY 2015

Diverse cultures have enriched our State since early times. Each January, we celebrate Florida Jewish History Month, highlighting the contributions of one ethnic group in shaping the destiny of Florida. In 2003, the Jewish Museum of Florida initiated Florida legislation to honor the indelible impact of Floridian Jews on our State’s history. Since 1763, when Jews were first allowed to live in Florida, they have maintained the traditions of their heritage and contributed to our State in every sector. Florida Jewish History Month is a time to learn how Jews have been involved in enriching the lives and dreams of all Floridians. The Museum provides educational materials to complement your existing curriculum including:

• Florida Jewish History fact sheets and activity guides

• Timeline of Florida Jewish history

• Lesson guide of important Florida Jewish History time periods and historical figures Visit our website for curriculum materials for Florida Jewish History Month www.jewishmuseum.com.

THE REVIEWS ARE IN!

Teacher Evaluations:

“Thank you for a wonderful educational experience! Full of great information and appealing to kids.” – Brauser Maimonides Academy, Hollywood.

“Age appropriate and engaging. Highly interactive and the students learned a lot! Looking forward to using concepts when discussing immigration/discrimination and Black History Month!” – NSE/Sunny Isles Beach K-8 Center.

Professional Development Feedback 2013 - 2014:

Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish: Florida Jews & Food Exploring Cultural Heritage and Identity: “Through the workshop I learned how a culture’s identity is often associated with various food traditions. I plan to use the information with my first grade students and develop a class cookbook where each student will submit a traditional family recipe and discuss how the dish plays a role in their family. Thank you for holding such and informative (and fun) workshop.” – Laura Parente-Comsa, First Grade Teacher. Miami-Dade County Public Schools GRAPHIC DETAILS: Confessional Comics by Jewish Women Inspiring Student Narrative and Memoir Reflections Through the Graphic Novel: “I see multiple applications to the classroom. Art projects could easily incorporate history, reading, drawing, science and math into a single lesson.” – Neil L.Hornstein, Parkway Elementary, Miami Gardens CINEMA JUDAICA: The War Years, 1939-1949 Focusing on popular culture, mass media and effecting positive social change: “It was interesting to learn how many movies we have watched and never noticed the motivation behind the film. The teachers were asked to apply new information and create a persuasive advertisement based on a current topic. All the supplies were provided, the instructions clear, and examples provided. Finally, we were to include a rubric with our presentation. It was interesting to share everyone’s work and their ideas. – Silvia Fernandez, Fourth Grade Science & Social Studies Teacher, Conchita Espinosa Academy, Miami
