Ban on sale of Rasgullas, Rabdi & Rasmalai after 48 hours of making

Ahmedabad, Tuesday (From a representative): At the time of-festivities, -sweet " , makers can sell sweets made out of milk only within two days from the day of manufacture. Sweets like rasgulla, rasmalai, rabdi, rajbhog, chamcham, malai roll and almond milk have to be sold within two days of their making. Laddoo, modak, khoya badam, malai ghevar, shahi ghevar, khoya-mava badam roll etc. have to be sold within 96 hours of their preparation. While sweets made in ghee and with dry fruits such as kaju katli, shakkarpara, shahi laddoo, mung barfi have to be sold within 7 days of their preparation. These guidelines have been released to ensure that sweet makers do not sell stale and inedible sweets during Diwali.

After the bumper sale of sweets like Mathura peda, plain barfi, pistachio barfi, boondi barfi, motichur laddoo, these guidelines have been considered. Details of sweets that customers buy have to be written on the packs as to till when the sweet can be consumed. Moreover, details of every ingredient including the type of oil and ghee used in the sweet has to be mentioned on the pack. Any additives like added aroma or colour cannot be added without being tested. Reuse of oils for frying have been forbidden as per the guidelines. Even the packs of sweets have to be licensed by FSSAI and the materials used in their making have to be mentioned clearly.

The Food and Drug Commissioner said that the department has shut down 45 such manufacturers who were adulterating sweets with talcum powder. Among these claims from the Commissioner, many private companies producing such adulterated barfis are supplying the same in various locations of Gujarat and Mumbai through private lUXUry buses from Ahmedabad. The office of the Commissioner has also been informed about the same. No action has been taken on this issue as of now.

These adulterated sweets are hazardous to public's health. That is why post preparation of several sweets, the guidelines clarify as to for how long it must be sold. Their shelf life has been declared and stated. An estimated 200-250 sweets and their shelf life has been mentioned.

After the latest controversy of sweet barfis, these recommendations were released by FSSAI on October 17,2019.
