Painful as it may be to say this in the presence of so many thousands of Jews, we must admit that we are standing helpless in the face of the danger of extinction to which Hitler has sentenced millions of Jews. It is beneath our dignity, and it would intensify our suffering, if we pretended to have power... The

democratic world has also betrayed us... The crime of the democratic world lies in its platonic sympathy for the indescribable sufferings of our brethren under Nazi rule, its passive attitude, its fatalistic resignation, its inability, or unwillingness, to translate feelings of righteousness into action." Finishes with a plea that "Perhaps now the hour has struck. Perhaps now the active conscience of that part of the world which still has a conscience, will awaken." Closes with a quote from William Lloyd Garrison about the liberation of slaves. 108. Hamilton, William [Ignatz Theodor Griebl]. Salute the Jew!
