Women’s Cornerstone March 6 & 7, 2015

What is Cornerstone? Cornerstone is an opportunity to renew your faith and grow in the experience of your Christian Community surrounded by a supportive group of women just like you. It is a place of warmth and hospitality where you take a breather from life’s daily stress. Come treat yourself to Cornerstone and know that You Are Loved. Share in some quiet, reflective time and learn about yourself on a personal and spiritual level again.

Look for brochures by the church entrance or read more online at www.stmarys-pompton.org or contact Registration Co-chairs Luci Mashereli [[email protected], 973.886.6546] or Mary Rose Hoffmann [[email protected], 973.432.7187].

Save the Date

Secondly, we have a very special parish mission planned this year. Although it isn’t happening until March 2 to 4, I want to make sure you get it on your calendar. Fr. Joe will lead the mission that he calls Reflections on the Holy Land. This will be a great opportunity to hear Fr. Joe talk about his sabbatical in Jerusalem and lead us in prayerful reflection on the sacred places in the life of Jesus that Fr. Joe visited. The mission will be offered twice each day this year, once in the afternoon and then again in the evening. There will be more details as we get closer. Finally, I’d like to welcome Joe Domko to the Parish Staff in the area of Youth Ministry. Joe joins us as the coordinator of senior high school ministry and retreats. He recently moved to New Jersey from Colorado and actually has been with us part time working with the Youth Ministry Staff until assuming the full time role on January 1. Joe is also in our RCIA program and will be fully initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. When asked about what else I could say about him, he simply said that he is incredibly grateful to be here! Joe is moving into the position that was held by Drew Canger for 18 months. Drew stepped in at a time when we really needed him and I am very grateful to him for the time he spent at St. Mary’s. Drew has moved on to advance his career. In short, one great guy is replacing another great guy!

Thank you for a great week and best wishes for a great week ahead!

Between the craziness of holiday schedules and the death of my uncle, I have been away from the Pastor’s Desk for a few weeks. So now that I’m back at it let me take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year!Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time. Christmas is over and Lent is on the not too distant horizon. During Ordinary Time the priest wears green, there are no special decorations and we hear the ordinary, yet life giving scriptures that sustain us throughout the year. This is Ordinary Time.We spend most of our lives, both liturgical and nonliturgical living in ordinary time. I remember reading once that our lives are full of high moments and low moments but most of our life is spent in very steady moments. That is good because we don’t have the energy to always sustain the high moments and we don’t have the fortitude to be constantly in the low moments. Ordinary time is a gift that keeps us steady and happy. In life and in liturgy this ordinary time is a time to reflect on our lives, take care of the day-to-day housekeeping of our souls and hearts, spruce up our relationships and open our hearts, minds and doors to new and exciting ways of encountering God and one another. Ordinary time is the time to pay attention to our day-to-day lives and that is very important because it is in our day-to-day lives that God is most likely to be rediscovered.Let me invite you to do your own reflecting this week. How do you spend the ordinary time of your life? Take some time to take stock of where you are in your life. Think of all the good things in your life—be grateful and tell someone that you are grateful! Two important things that will take place in the parish during ordinary time are the Franciscan Challenge and the Parish Mission. Since its very beginning, the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province have cared for the souls and the life of St. Mary’s Church in Pompton Lakes. Friars have preached the gospel of love here for generations and the people of St. Mary’s have deeply loved the friars in return. We bring our ministry and your love with us as we plan for our future. For many, many years you have generously supported Holy Name Province by giving financial support to our student-friars at the Washington Theological Union and by giving financial support to our infirm friars at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, NJ. Now Holy Name Province combines those two collections into one program called the Franciscan Challenge. This will take place the weekend of February 7 and 8. We will welcome Fr. David Convertino, OFM, the Director of Development for Holy Name Province and other friars who will make the presentation and tell our ongoing story. We will also welcome Fr. Michael Carnevale, OFM home that weekend to help with the Franciscan Challenge. Last year St. Mary’s Parish raised over $88,000 for the Franciscans—the most in Holy Name Province! Fr. Richard, Fr. Gonzalo, Fr. Joe and I are very grateful to you for your generous support of the friars.

For 2015, once each month, the Women’s Rights Team will present a bulletin article about a social justice issue that affects women and children. We ask for your support for our work through prayer, thoughtful reading of each article and, hopefully, a decision to take positive action to fight the cited injustices.

January Is Human Trafficking Awareness MonthDuring New Year’s Day Mass, Pope Francis urged people of all religions and cultures to unite to fight modern slavery and human trafficking and declared that everyone has a God-given right to be free. The Pope said “All of us are called (by God) to be free, all are called to be sons and daughters, and each, according to his or her own responsibilities, is called to combat modern forms of enslavement. From every people, culture and religion, let us join our forces.”Members of the Women’s Rights Team have had the opportunity to learn about human trafficking and work toward ending modern slavery by joining forces with various non-profit organizations that are focused on human trafficking and special interest groups that have a passion and mission to end this scourge.

Doing so has enabled us to be inspired and empowered by working with local and international people of various religions and cultures, as Pope Francis has urged all to do. We will continue to do so and urge you to join us in this crucial battle against injustice.

If you would like additional information about how you can get involved with this effort please contact us at 973.653.9728 or [email protected].

We are amazed at the continued generosity and creativity of many of our parishioner’s. This week we received a call at the Food Pantry from someone who recently had a birthday party to mark a milestone birthday in their life and instead of birthday gifts, they requested that their guest each bring a bag of non-perishable food to the party as a donation for the St. Mary’s Food Pantry! What a great way to celebrate and honor the birthday recipient! A total of 40 bags were collected and delivered to the Food Pantry. Our heartfelt birthday wishes and blessings to this very special person! This selfless of act -- of remembering someone who is not as fortunate, is something that happens so often at the St. Mary’s Food Pantry. We are blessed by the goodness and generosity of so many! Our heartfelt thanks to all!

Your continued care of our Food Pantry members through your prayers, your donations of food, gift cards and monetary support is so greatly appreciated.

God Bless Each & Everyone of you with an abundance of blessings!
