The Diocese of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich Treasuring Christianity in Suffolk 100 Years 100 Treasures A glossy, full-colour book to celebrate
our magnificent churches and their
treasures is now available to mark the
centenary of our Diocese of St
Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
Our Diocese was formed in March 1914
from parts of the dioceses of Norwich
and Ely; the parish church of St James,
Bury St Edmunds became our Cathedral.
The 120-page book 100 Years, 100 Treasures: A Celebration of
Suffolk Churches, costs just £5 a copy and is part of the 2014
Centenary celebrations that start in earnest in March when the
Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Justin Welby, visits Bury
St Edmunds.
The book features ‘treasure’ from every period represented in the
diocese from the Anglo Saxons and Normans through to the Middle
Ages and on to the Victorians – in fact right up to the present day.
The concept of pilgrims and visitors touring parishes to discover
these remarkable treasures ties in neatly with the Centenary theme
of ‘Pilgrims in Time’. They are of special significance to the
churches which nominated them.
Generous sponsorship means that the book will retail for only £5;
the normal retail price would otherwise have been significantly
more. If you buy the book through your parish rep, then your
Church is able to retain £2 of the cost price of £5. Please contact
the Revd Chris Norburn on 01379 898 685 for details and to place
your order(s).
WELCOMEWELCOMEWELCOMEWELCOME Welcome to new residents in our villages. If you have
recently moved into one of our villages the churches wish
you a warm welcome. If you would like someone from the
church to visit you, or perhaps you would like your house
blessed, then please do get in touch with the Rector
on 01379 898685. May your life in these
communities be peaceful, prosperous and a blessing
to your neighbours.
FORGET-ME-NOT-CLUB On 28th May we all enjoyed afternoon tea provided by our President and Chairman. Many thanks from all of us.
9th July will bring us a visit from Christine Alderman of Wiltshire Farm Foods. She will be bringing tasters for everyone to try. Visitors will be welcome to join us for what should be an enjoyable afternoon. There will also be the chance to arrange delivery of their meals, should you wish to give them a try.
In August our friends from Ixworth and Bardwell Club will be joining us at Parkview Chapel for another afternoon of tea and entertainment, and September brings our annual outing to Lowestoft, so we have plenty to look forward to. Barbara Foster

It has been a very busy and productive summer term so far at St
Botolph’s and the children and staff are looking forward to a well-
earned break next month.
All of the children have been enjoying the recent good weather and
many of our children have been out and about visiting exciting
places and enriching their learning. The children also have their
sports mornings to look forward to which are well received by par-
ents and carers. It is fantastic to see the children enjoying them-
selves and taking part in a variety of competitive and non- competi-
tive sports events. The children not only demonstrated great effort
and determination but also good team spirit and sportsmanship.
The children at St Botolph’s will also be presenting their annual
music and art festival. For one evening in July parents and carers
will be invited to Redgrave Church to view a wide variety of art
work and be entertained by numerous talented children from EYFS
to YR6. The choir always delights the audience with their singing
and I’m sure we’ll be inspired by the range of children demonstrat-
ing their skills using different instruments; these will include guitar,
piano, flute, recorder, various brass instruments and drums. The
evening should be sensational and it will be wonderful to see the
results of such hard work and dedication from all of the children.
On top of all this we also have the carnival to get excited about!
This year marks the 20th anniversary of St Botolph’s so the staff
have been working very hard making plans and preparations for a
bright and vibrant carnival which will end with our Summer Fayre.
Finally I must mention our fantastic Year 6 children who will soon
be starting the next stage of their education. I wish them all well as
they move on to high school.
Mr M. Cobbold, Headteacher
In June our published speaker was unable to attend so Irene organised a last minute re-placement and what a joy she was. Christine Humphries spoke about Tears and Laughter in Finding Your Family. She gave us lots of history with fascinating stories about members
of her family. She has delved deeply and kept us amused with her tales.
Please join us on the second Thursday of the month at the Village Hall at 7.30pm.
In July Andrew Bailey from Blooms will speak about ‘Roses and Labour Saving Gardening’. For our August meeting we have an outing to Pulham Market to see the Millennium Tapestry and in September our talk is ‘Memories of a Pomme Child Migrant to Australia’. Philippa Rixon

Lt. Col. Arthur Holt Wilson
In the churchyard of St. Mary Redgrave is a Commonwealth War Grave which is completely different to all the other Commonwealth War Graves. It is a large cross monument in the same style as many other monuments in this area of the churchyard for members of the Wilson family, but when it is clean it is a brilliant white stone the same as the other war graves. This grave is for Lt. Col. Arthur Holt Wilson.
Arthur had a privileged childhood, the second son of George Holt Wilson and Lucy Caroline Wilson of Redgrave Hall. Although he was the second son he had an elder sister Louisa Violet Elizabeth who was only nine months old when he was born on the 24th July 1869. In the Redgrave Estate Archive are letters from the family sent to his eldest brother Rowland who was at boarding school. These letters tell of a happy holiday spent at Yarmouth whilst part of Redgrave Hall was re-decorated. Arthur was aged about nine at this time, and had to travel in the luggage cart to Eccles station to catch the train to Yarmouth. The governess and two nursery maids were also taken to Yarmouth. Lucy had ten children in sixteen years, and died in 1888 when Arthur was nineteen and the youngest child, Piers, only five years old. Arthur was educated at Haileybury.
The Hartismere Magazine is a source of information on the progress of the family. As with many landed gentry of this period the eldest son inherited the estate whilst the younger sons went into the Church, navy or army. Many of the Wilson family were military men and George’s cousin Thomas Holt Wilson was Rector of Redgrave Church, and other members of the family had connections through marriage with Rickinghall Church.
By November 1889 the magazine says “Mr. Arthur Holt Wilson has been gazetted to the second battalion of the East Surrey Regiment and joins it at Guernsey early in this month. We hope that beside being useful as an officer, he may be of assistance in helping his regiment to win their cricket matches.” The previous month he had played well at cricket for Redgrave and Botesdale, who played at Barley Birch on the opposite side of the old turnpike road to Redgrave Hall.
In November 1896 Lieut. Arthur Wilson, 31st Regiment, returned after six years in India.
A Rickinghall parish magazine of 1898 says “We see by the London Gazette, May 28th, that Lieut. Arthur Holt Wilson, second son of Mr. Wilson of Redgrave Hall, has obtained the rank of Captain in the first Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment now stationed at Jhansi, Bengal.” Before sailing to India Arthur gave many of his possessions to his sister Evelyn to raise money for the bells at Redgrave Church which were in need of restoration. This gave her the idea of organising a giant sale of work which was very
successful.
The October, Hartismere Deanery magazine of 1904 says “Captain Arthur Wilson of the East Surrey Regiment has returned from India after seven [years] absence.” Whilst he was away his younger brother Basil aged 29 had died in 1902 in New Zealand where he had a school. His sister Louisa died in 1903.
Members of the James family of Barrock, in 1913, compiled a pedigree of all the families into which members of their family had married. Arthur’s mother, Lucy James, had married George Holt Wilson, therefore Arthur is mentioned on the Holt Wilson pedigree. Strangely enough Arthur is recorded as a retired
Major of the East Surrey Regiment living in British Columbia. His younger brothers Francis and Villiers are also living in British Columbia at this time.
Arthur re-enlisted in 1914. He is recorded as leaving Folkestone for Boulogne on the 1st June 1915, 2nd in command of the 7th Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment. He married Edith Mary Teevan only two months previous to this at St. Martin, London on the 16th March.
The war diaries of this regiment give further information. On the 24th August 1915 they say “The success of our snipers is mainly due to Major Wilson who being a big game shot treats the matter scientifically and only allows the snipers to shoot when they are practically certain they are hit, shooting at periscopes etc. is absolutely forbidden consequently hardly any if any of our sniping positions are as yet know to the enemy.” Arthur had an interest in guns from a young age as a member of a shooting family. In a letter to his brother Rowland in 1878 he wrote: “Papa and Mr. Hustler went out rook shooting, and they killed 27; Papa’s gun went bad and he has sent for a rifle which is to come by the last train tonight. Mr. Hustler’s air cane would not shoot well, so he did not kill many rooks, there was only one hung up and it was only wounded.”
On the 1st January 1916 it is recorded at Givenchy Windy Corner: A quiet day. Last night we shot 6 German revellers they were quite drunk and walking about on top of a crater. The Colonel went on leave in the evening. Major Wilson taking over command with Major James 2nd in command. One of the water carts was smashed on the 8th January and the horses were killed.
On 22nd January Major Wilson appeared in the London Gazette as having received rewards for gallant conduct. He received the Distinguished Service Order and was mentioned in despatches. Major Wilson was left in command again on April 4th when the Colonel went on leave again. The diaries tell of much action in the trenches. The last we hear of Arthur in the trenches from these diaries was on April 11th 1916. “General cleaning up and baths. Major Wilson left for an investiture at Buckingham Palace today and Capt. Garnett took control of the Battalion.”
Arthur retired in 1919 by which time he had become a Lieutenant Colonel. He died on the 18th November 1919 one year after the end of the war. He was buried in Redgrave churchyard. His younger brother, Leonard, was the Rector of St Mary’s, Redgrave at this time. I have been unable to find out what he died of, or why he had a Commonwealth War Grave but is not named on the war memorial of our parishes or the Southwold war memorial where he had a home. With thanks to Diana Maywhort for leads on the internet, Graham Clayton for loan of a compendium of magazine articles and various other people trying to help me find some answers.

First World War and Botesdale War Memorial continued.
Last month I wrote about Henry Whistlecraft who was the last man
commemorated on Botesdale War Memorial to die in the First
World War. The first men to die from our villages, as far as is
known, were killed in April 1915. They were Captain Lyon Playfair
and Lieutenant Frederick Thackeray who were both officers in the
Regular Army. Soon afterwards three men from the Suffolk Regi-
ment were also to die.
Lieutenant Frederick Thackeray, of the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wel-
lington’s (West Riding Regiment), was commissioned in 1912 after
attending the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. He was the grand-
son of Colonel Hasted, who lived in Brook House, Rickinghall. He
had landed in France on 15th August 1914 and, as well as other bat-
tles, had been in the battle and retreat from Mons in 1914. He was
killed on 18th April 1915 while leading an assault on Hill 60 near
Ypres. He had only returned to the battalion the day before after
being wounded earlier in the year. His father was killed in action on
15th October 1915.
The Hon. Lyon Playfair was the only son of Brigadier-General Lord
Playfair and Lady Playfair who at the time were living in Redgrave
Hall. He had been to the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich and
had been commissioned Lieutenant in 1908 and promoted Captain in
December 1914. He was in the 31st Battalion Royal Artillery and
had landed in France on 23rd August 1914. He was killed on 20th
April 1915 while acting as observation officer for his battery in a
trench close to the German front line. A memorial window was un-
veiled at the east end of the north aisle of Redgrave Church on the
20th April 1916 exactly a year after his death.
The three men, who were all in the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment
died in April and May 1915. They were involved in the 2nd Battle of
Ypres (22nd April until 25th May 1915). They were Privates Stephen
Boyce killed on 24th April from Botesdale, Arthur Bailey, from
Rickinghall killed on 8th May and James Sage from Botesdale killed
on 25th May 1915.
The battalion had arrived in France in January of that year but it
appears that Arthur Bailey and Stephen Boyce had arrived in France
on 14th April only a few days before they were killed. James Sage
arrived on the 18th of May and was killed only 7 days later. The 1st
Battalion suffered nearly 400 casualties in the few days before the
28th April then on the 8th May over 400 were killed. On the 17th May
the 2nd Battalion War Diary reported ‘a man from the 1st Suffolks
brought the news that the Battalion had been practically wiped out.’
The bodies of these five men were never found and they are com-
memorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, where a Cere-
mony of Remembrance is held every night at 8 p.m.
On 14th May 1915 the Diss Express reported the latest news about
men from Rickinghall involved in the war.
The War – Information has been received from the War Office that
Prvt. H. Smith, of the Canadians, who has four brothers in the Army,
and Sergt. R. Ray, of the Cyclists, have been wounded. Besides
these, Rickinghall has suffered to the following extent:- Lieut.
Thackeray and Prvt. Noakes (husband of a young Rickinghall
woman) have been killed; Col. Hasted was wounded at Mons and is
now invalided home, after returning to the front; J. Whistlecraft has
returned with frozen feet; C. Smith, A. Wales, and G. Powlisland
have been wounded; T. Rush, R. Foulger, and E. Smith are prison-
ers.
No information had been received at this date about Arthur Bailey of
Rickinghall. His parents did not receive confirmation of his death
until June 1916, over a year after he was killed.
On 4th August 1916 the Diss Express reported:
Rickinghall. On Sunday, July 16th, a memorial service was held at
the Lower Church, when the Rector made touching allusion to the
men belonging to the parish who had fallen in the War, and in
speaking of Private Bailey said that he was a regular church worker
and had been greatly missed since he had been called away never to
return. As a ringer he was known for many miles around his parish
and was loved by all, and his loss is deeply mourned by his brother
ringers, who while lamenting his death feel proud that he gave his
life for his King and country. The peal of 720 of Oxford Treble Bob
was rung by S. Moule, Market Weston, treble; Edgar Bailey 2,
Harry Morley 3, Wm. Morley 4, James Bailey 5, and C. Chenery,
tenor, and was conducted by the latter.
Charles Chenery would be killed in action on 9th March 1917.
*The Memorial plaque which came to be known as the 'Death
Penny' was given to the relatives of all who had died in WWI.

should be retained for reference by anybody who uses the Oil Syn-
dicate.
The next Oil Order, Summer, will be at the end of July. Orders to be
in to me by the end of Saturday 26 July. Delivery will be during the
following two weeks, so could be as late as August 8.
The Early-Winter order will be near the end of November. Orders to
be in to me by the end of Saturday 22 November. Again, deliveries
can take up to two weeks.
The Late-Winter order will be at the end of February 2015. Orders
to be in to me by Saturday 21 February.
I will try to send out reminders by e-mail to those who use the
internet; I will also try to contact those who only use the telephone,
but I can make no promises. Recent users are more likely to be con-
tacted.
So keep this copy handy!
And finally. Please, Somebody, come forward and volunteer to take
over production of the Magazine! If I wasn't already doing the Oil
Syndicate, I would do it; it can't be too much for somebody who is
retired and can drive a computer! It's not difficult, it just takes a
little time every month.

Bill Cordeaux Tel: 898286 I welcome feedback, do get in touch. Nyall Davies 01379 897 067
A headmaster of a Christian school wasn’t around when we were
there recently. He had been corresponding with someone who has
been on death row in America for thirteen years and had decided
that he should visit him. We were talking about that when my wife
observed how cruel the system in America was to keep people so
long on death row. I then realised that we are all on death row.
Despite the best efforts of medical research, the NHS and the drug
companies the death rate for the human race continues to remain at
very close to 100%. There may be momentary triumphs when
someone is saved from dying. They are but momentary.
The difference between us and the man on death row is (1),
he is better able to ascertain the date and (2), he gets the judgement
first. We get it later. However, both of us can find forgiveness now.
I write this on the day that Richard Dawkins has announced
that it is wrong to read fairy stories to children. Frogs don’t turn into
handsome princes he claims.
I find it strange that, with him being a professor of biology,
it has taken him so long to come to that conclusion. Perhaps it has
taken him sometime to find a princess that will kiss a frog so that he
can demonstrate the matter experimentally. Now, I know something
that will enlighten his understanding further: most children know
that frogs do not turn into princes. I knew that at an early age. He
clearly has underestimated the intelligence of children. It seems to
me that he underestimates the intelligence of most us so that I have
to consider it a distinct possibility that he will go on to want to ban
Harry Potter and all fiction with a happy ending as not all of life’s
events have a happy ending. He operates a philosophy that seems to
me to destroy hope. He lives in a hopeless world.
I note that the relatives of those missing due to the
disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight number MH370 are
getting together a fund of some 5 million to offer rewards to anyone
who can give them information as to where the plane is. They are
not yet willing to give up hope. It is something inbuilt into human
beings.
In hope Abraham believed against hope, that he should
become the father of many nations, for God told him that his
offspring will be like the sands of the sea and the stars of the
heavens. The Bible also says of us, “We wait eagerly for the time
when God finally adopts us as his children forever. ** For in this
hope we were saved... we wait for it with patience.”
My Christian headmaster friend has a message of hope for
his friend on death row for, if he truly repents and trusts Jesus Christ
he can experience life beyond death row.
I hope not to have Richard Dawkins at my bedside when I
die.
(** my paraphrase)
I finished June’s report
with an appeal for
more Turtle Doves.
Fortunately I was
lucky. The Turtle
Dove had returned to
its old terrain in The
Street, Redgrave and
another (possibly two
pairs) in the centre of
Hinderclay. Both
observers were
delighted to hear the familiar ‘purring’ songsters being with them
again, and so was I when attending ‘Coffee with Carol’ on the
morning of 12th June. As I got out of the car there was a Turtle
Dove very loud and clear, ‘purring’ away in a nearby ash tree.
Another migrant has, at last, reappeared. The Spotted Flycatcher,
whose numbers have been decreasing. Why? Well, possibly due to
increasing insecticide use. This bird seems to nest near human
habitation. It is quite secretive and often its nest is not discovered
until it contains fledglings and there is a constant coming and going
of the parents to the hungry young. Two sites have been revisited,
one in Rickinghall and one in Fen Road, Redgrave. Again, not
noticed until the young have appeared. Careful watching can
confirm the bird’s presence, it tends to do a quick ‘fly catch’ and
then return to its previous perch on a tree branch. An old frequented
site was the east window of the Chapel of Ease, when the bird could
be seen outlined feeding its young in the east window. A pleasant
distraction to the non-attentive worshipper!
A final migrant that I remember well, but will probably not hear, let
alone see, is the Nightjar. BUT, HOLD ON! On 9th June I had a
call from Wortham Ling where a group of watchers had heard and
seen a Nightjar. On the warm, still evening air the Nightjars ‘churr’
must have carried for miles. The Brecks and Suffolk Coast are well
known for their presence but in diminishing numbers. But no
mention of Wortham. The small group of us (yes, I WAS there),
stood enthralled by the loud ‘churring’ on a still night. White
handkerchiefs had been waved and the bird had appeared, possibly
thinking a rival had arrived. It had flown over the small group to
investigate a possible intruder! Was this the lone male bird, like
our Redgrave Fen Bittern, looking for a partner in a new area?
Many thanks to the kind group who gave me a chance to hear again
a bird on which I had given up!
How fortunate we are to have BBC 2’s Springwatch at Minsmere.
They have tended to concentrate on the appearance and breeding
habits of more common species, and not necessarily the bird life,
which most of us have never seen at such close quarters before.
Little did I think when I wandered over those marshes in 1953 that
the area I roamed, as a student, would one day be viewed
nationwide as our top bird reserve.
On a recent ’fine arts’ visit to Oxford and its surrounds, I was able
to do some birdwatching from a Simonds bus. Most noticeable
were the Red Kite on the M4 and areas near Oxford. They are
increasing quickly in numbers and I believe can be quite hazardous
if suddenly falling on carrion on the highway.
And now please say “not again”, if I conclude with the Redgrave
Bittern. I was reminded about a previous occurrence on the
Waveney in the Fen in 1971 by its observer, David Orr, one of the
pioneers in reviving the Fen, with particular reference to the Raft
Spider. He tells me he saw the Bittern in the winter of 1971. He
saw it on the Norfolk and Suffolk sides of the River Waveney, and,
if you doubt its sighting please turn to Page 57 of William Payne’s
1978 edition of ’The Birds of Suffolk’, which states “one visited
Redgrave Fen in December 1971 (D M S Orr)”.

A Wedding Day tale ...
During the wedding rehearsal, the groom approached the
vicar with an unusual offer.
"Look, I'll give your church £100 if you'll change the wed-
ding vows. When you get to me and the part where I'm to
promise to 'love, honour and obey' and 'forsaking all oth-
ers, be faithful to her forever,' I'd appreciate it if you'd
just leave that part out." He passed the minister £100
and walked away satisfied.
The next day during the wedding ceremony, the time came
for the bride and groom to exchange their vows. The vicar
looked the young man in the eye and said, "Will you promise
to prostrate yourself before her, obey her every command
and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your
life, and swear eternally before God and your lovely wife
that you will not ever even look at another woman, as long
as you both shall live?"
The groom gulped, looked around, and said in a tiny voice,
"Yes." He then leaned toward the vicar and hissed, "I
thought we had a deal."
The vicar put the £100 into the groom's hand and whis-
pered back, "She made me a much better offer."
Doctor : “I am not exactly sure of the cause. I think it
could be due to alcohol.”
Patient : “That’s OK. I will come back when you are sober”.

Have a safe Summer—tips from our PCSO Dave Faulkner Your home - Don’t leave ground floor windows and doors open
even if you are just nipping upstairs for a shower. If you live in a
bungalow or a ground floor flat don’t leave windows open in
unoccupied rooms open.
Check your doors and patio doors are locked before you go to bed.
If you are in the back garden gardening, barbecue, or sunbathing it's
easy for someone to enter your house unobserved via insecure
windows or door at the front of the house.
Your car - Unattended vehicles left unlocked or with windows or
sun roofs open make an easy target for thieves even when parked on
your drive.
Your garden - Mark your property, tools, lawn mower with your
house number/name and post code.
Don’t leave lawn mowers and other gardening equipment
unattended in your front garden.
Don’t leave your tools, garden spades out after use because a burglar
could use them to get into your property.
Secure your gates to keep intruders out your rear garden.
In the rear garden fit some security lighting on your house on a
movement detector or “dusk till dawn” sensor, this also helps with
barbecues and parties.
Your garage/ shed - Don’t leave garage doors open for others to see
the contents.
Make a note of the model and serial numbers of bikes, tools,
electrical goods and lawn mowers.
If you are putting in a new shed try and site it in view of your house.
Put a lock on your shed/garage door and use it!
With larger tools and bikes consider fitting a shed shackle to the
wall or “Eye” type anchor into a concrete floor and chain it to this.
Consider a shed alarm; they are quite reasonably priced from DIY
stores or internet, and effective.
Going on holiday? - Speak to your neighbour – ask them to look
out and listen out for anything suspicious while your away. And do
the same for them.
Make your property look occupied.
Secure your garage, home and gates.

A Heartfelt ‘Thank You’ On behalf of my family I would like to thank all the friends,
colleagues and everyone who sent cards, letters and flowers
to us when Brian died so suddenly on 24 March. We were
overwhelmed by the kindness, care and thoughtfulness ex-
pressed. A very generous £400 was donated to the Friends
of Botesdale Health Centre in his memory, most of which
was Gift Aided.

RAHOF A sincere “thank you” from the
RAHOF Committee and Chairman for
loyal support of their 2014 events so
far.
The “Meet Miranda” Coffee Morning
in April, which raised £230, intro-
duced Hospice Community Fund-
raiser Miranda McCoy to our area.
The May Spring Lunch was a delightful event which raised £648
and attracted an additional generous donation of £360. Guest
speaker was noted landscape designer Lady Xa Tollemache, who
was presented by the RAHOF Committee with a Pearl pendant,
from a series especially created to commemorate the 2014 “pearl
Anniversary” of 30 years of St Nicholas Hospice Care.
We look forward to welcoming you to our Annual Cream Tea in
July. Please note it is being held at Farm View, Ling Road, North
Lopham, IP22 2NH, as Chairman June Shepherd has now left her
Redgrave home to live in Botesdale, which has a smaller garden!
Please phone Catherine on 01953 681543 for directions.
Thank you, your support is greatly appreciated.
Regan Doreen and Bernard wish to thank everyone for their good
wishes and invaluable help with transport, especially Ella
Miles and Mary Baxter who ensured that Doreen could visit
Bernard during his long stay in the Norfolk & Norwich Hos-
pital.
The Parochial Church Council would like to thank all
who work, many voluntary and unnoticed, to keep the
churchyards in Redgrave, Botesdale and Rickinghall
looking so neat and tidy. It is appreciated by all who
visit our buildings. Thank you.
Coffee with Carol—12th June I would like to say a BIG BIG THANKYOU to eve-
ryone who supported my coffee morning - whether it
was by giving, baking, coming on the day or helping
on the stalls and with refreshments. You all ensured
that the magnificent sum of £2,088.00 will be given
to St Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds. I
am overwhelmed by your generosity .... thank you so much.
