May - June 2011

Message from the President…

Jazz takes no vacation

April was Jazz Appreciation Month, and it was celebrated by an extraordinary number of well-attended events across the Valley - - from the Chandler Jazz Festival in the East Valley to

the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival in the West Valley…from the Ella Fitzgerald tribute concert at MIM in North Scottsdale to our own Jazz in AZ “Jazz Masterworks Orchestra” concert at Kerr and “Bad Cactus Brass Band-Roots of Jazz” Party at Kaz.

With the approach of summer, it's important to reflect on the value of supporting live jazz year-round. Many jazz fans are “snowbirds,” which creates a potential dip in audiences. But there is no dip in talented musicians whose passion for playing and sharing their gifts with us is their livelihood; and there is no shortage of venues that venture to offer live jazz even as the mercury climbs. So if you are going to be in the Valley for the next several months, I hope you will make your enjoyment of as much live jazz as possible a priority.

By the way, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) has a great summer series, beginning with a concert on Sunday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. by Young Sounds of Arizona featuring jazz saxophone legend Lee Konitz. Our Jazz in AZ May party will precede the same day from 3-5 p.m. at Kazimierz, featuring two great local ladies of jazz, Alice Tatum and Barb Catlin (recipient of the 2011 Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award). Two other Jazz in AZ events in May are Beth Lederman's “Jazz Con Alma” at Kerr on May 4, and a special in-home party and concert with the one and only world-renowned Francine Reed. This event is a fundraiser in support of the forthcoming Lewis Nash-Jazz in AZ Community Center, which will focus on performance and educational opportunities for young jazz musicians. For reservations, call Joan at 480-947-6119.

We also are working to finalize plans for several events in June and July, including our annual “Father's Day Dance” at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort featuring Dennis Rowland with the Extreme Decibel Big Band and the Young Sounds of Arizona; and a “Catch a Rising Star” concert at Kerr. You also will be receiving notice of our rescheduled annual meeting.

Funding is a challenge in the current economy, but we are striving to maintain all of the Jazz in AZ signature programs, as well as taking our organization's mission to the next level by opening the Lewis Nash-Jazz in AZ Community Center in the arts district of downtown Phoenix. Your support of these noble efforts would be most appreciated through attendance at our events and your consideration of donations, planned gifts and other financial, in-kind or volunteer support. To explore opportunities for your support of Jazz in AZ, contact our development chair, Celeste Winters ([email protected] or our executive director, Joel Goldenthal ([email protected], 602-750-7045).

Stay cool with jazz all summer long…and thank you for all of your support!

Sincerely,Dan KonzenPresident

News from Out & About

By Patricia Myers

Does hearing jazz make us happier? A recent brain-research study found

that listening to favorite music can trigger the release of large amounts of dopamine, a chemical that sends “feel good” signals to the body.

The small study, published in Nature Neuroscience and reported in the mainstream media, used brain scans to show that a group of college students released more dopamine when they heard their preferred music, ranging from Beethoven to Led Zeppelin.

The researchers found that even the anticipation of the next note leads to intense pleasure. “It's interesting because music is an abstract sequence of tones,” said Valorie Salimpoor, the study's lead author and a neuroscientist at Montreal Neurological Institute in Canada. “But somehow the way the brain is interpreting these tones, you get this intense physiological response, and the most potent reinforcing chemical in the brain is released, creating a wanting, a desire, a craving, and saying 'Do this again.' ”

She added that one “might feel a chill or hair standing on end, which means that a sense of anticipation or expectation in itself is creating a need to hear the next note, leading up to intense pleasure.”

This may explain why music has played a key role in almost every culture.

“This also provides an explanation of why people like listening to their favorite music, even though it's not critical to one's life functions,” said another neurologist, Ted Rothstein of George Washington University. “For a long time we've known that when you listen to music, it's enjoyable, it's relaxing, your blood pressure goes down.”

A growing body of research on music therapy suggests that listening to favorite music can help people sleep better, lessen pain of surgery or conditions such as arthritis, and improve conditions such as anxiety and depression. It also supports studies showing that music and dance therapy can be effective for people with Parkinson's disease, which is characterized by low dopamine levels.

“This is the science behind what we see in practice,” said Nancy Morgan, director of arts and humanities at a cancer

center at Georgetown University Hospital, which provides music-therapy programs for patients (as does the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale and Mayo Hospital in Phoenix, at which local jazz musicians perform regularly). “We have musicians who play for people who've just come out of surgery,” she said, and they say the pain subsides. “Now we know that perhaps dopamine is playing a role.”

All of this convinces me even more of my feeling that listening to jazz is good for my physical and mental health. I just wonder if I can get away with filing that as a tax deductible expense.

Jazz Buzz: Several farewell performances gave Barb Catlin a good sendoff for her move to Los Angeles. The Mesa Community College jazz-studies director was presented with the 2011 Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award during the April 21 concert at the Mesa Arts Center, when she led several MCC bands.

Barb was director of Young Sounds of Arizona for seven years (2003-2010), and active as a pianist in combos and big bands. She relocated to Arizona in 1994 from northern California, where she had

studied saxophone. In 1999, Barb was named "Player to Catch" by Downbeat Magazine.

She has performed on cruise ships and for touring shows of stars such as Lou Rawls, Wayne Newton, Ben Vereen and Smokey Robinson, as well as for local singers Alice Tatum, Sherry Roberson and Dennis Rowland. She has taught at the high school and community college levels, and was a clinician and adjudicator throughout the Southwest.

Barb Catlin will be missed in multiple elements of the local jazz community.

thInsider's Info: The 35 annual Paradise Valley Jazz Party, produced by Don Z. Miller, a Jazz in AZ founder and past president, will collaborate with the Musical Instrument Museum for the April 2012 weekend event.

Saxophonist Paul Brewer has been selected to head the Mesa Community College jazz-studies curriculum, moving from that position at Scottsdale Community College. The MCC program was founded in the 1970s by Don Bothwell and expanded by the late Grant Wolf.

Musicians' News: Saxophonist Dominic Amato released a CD titled “Illuminate” in April. Among the 12 tracks is "The Hope of One Man's Dream," an original written in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that Amato plans to perform May 15 at the United Nations in New York City. In October, he will tour 10 cities in France with Sister Sledge and Kool and the Gang.

Saxophonist Greg Fishman was featured in an April concert at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago that reconstructed Woody Herman's legendary “Four Brothers” aggregation of three tenors and a baritone sax. His colleagues were Harry Allen, Eric Schneider and Ted Hogarth.

Quotable: Judy Roberts, referencing her 1985 LP recorded with Ray Brown on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums: “Back then, I had cleavage and Jeff had hair. Now Jeff has cleavage and I have hair.”

Final Bar: Joe Morello, 82, drummer with Dave Brubeck Quartet, March 12 in New Jersey; Tom Miles, trumpeter, 59, April 11 in Phoenix; Jerry Davy, drummer, Jan. 14 in Wichita, Kan.

Joe Sample and worked with producer Don Costa. On local stages, she has opened for stars such as Nancy Wilson, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Tom Scott, The Righteous Brothers, Joe Sample, Alice Cooper and Paul Anka. But Arizona remained her home base because of strong family ties.

She was performing a jazz repertoire at the Arizona Biltmore in 1970 when Charles Lewis first heard her. The longtime Valley pianist, composer and educator recalled, “She had as good an 'instrument' as I've ever heard. Her low range was rich and her high range was still strong, and the personality of her voice didn't change, the quality was still there, which is rare in singers. And every time she sang a song, it was a little different. I had a lot of respect for her natural musicianship, and encouraged her to expand and take chances.”

The Jazz in AZ party at Kaz from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 15, will be an exciting afternoon of music, and a chance to acknowledge two of the most beloved ladies of the jazz community. Kazimierz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale, A grazing menu, extensive wine list and full bar are available. The event is open to the public for $10 admission; JiA membership rates apply.
