student councilCreated in 2005, the Jazz Links Student Council gives high school jazz musicians the opportunity to develop musically and professionally through exposure to live music, workshops with professional musicians, and performance opportunities throughout the city.

n Grades 8-12n Application required

Jam sessionsMonthly jam sessions provide students with an opportunity to connect with other student musicians and perform with world-class professionals in the Jazz Links house band. Hosted in partnership with the Chicago Cultural Center, the jam sessions provide everyone with a chance to see young talent develop right before their eyes and ears. The series also includes an annual Alumni Jam session for past program participants.

summer ensembleThe Jazz Links Summer Ensemble is a paid summer internship for serious high school jazz musicians. The ensemble performs regularly throughout the city at a variety of venues including the Chicago Cultural Center and Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park. Students build their jazz repertoire, hone composing and arranging skills and gain leadership experience.

n Grades 9-12n Audition required

Youth ensembleThe Jazz Links Youth Ensemble provides student musicians from throughout the city with an opportunity to improve and expand their skills in a big band setting. Directed by experienced Chicago Public School Band Directors, the ensemble rehearses on Saturdays and focuses on building musicianship and improvisation skills.

n Grades 6-12n Audition required

Kiewit-wang mentorship awardThe Kiewit-Wang Mentorship Award is given to two high school students who demonstrate excellence in jazz musicianship. Recipients receive fifteen free private lessons with a local jazz musician of their choice.

n Entering grades 9-12n Audition required

all citY Jazz band competitionCo-sponsored with the Chicago Public Schools, the All City Jazz Band Competition is designed to promote and showcase young Chicago jazz talent. Competition winners have the opportunity to perform at the Chicago Jazz Festival on the Chicago Community Trust Young Jazz Lions Pavilion. One ensemble is also selected to perform with a composer-in-residence during their performance. Participation is limited to Chicago Public School programs.

Jazz masters residencY/proFessional staFF development programJazz Master Residencies bring some of Chicago’s most sought-after jazz master artists into Chicago Public School classrooms for eight sessions. It provides professional staff development training for music instructors and builds relationships between teachers, students, schools and musicians. The program also includes free live concert access.

n Grades K-12n Application required (For Chicago Public

School students and teachers only)

straight ahead Jazz campStraight Ahead Jazz Camp provides music educators, jazz enthusiasts and students 18 and over with five days of jazz immersion featuring innovative, hands-on sessions led by professional musicians and clinicians. Sessions include lecture-discussions, workshops, and master classes.

teacher’s advisorY councilThe Jazz Links Teacher’s Advisory Council develops programs that serve young jazz students and teachers city-wide. It also functions as a professional network that advocates for more jazz in Chicago Public Schools.

n Chicago Public School teachers only

noteworthY Jazz ensembleA unique ensemble comprised of Chicago Public School music teachers, Noteworthy serves as a platform for jazz advocacy in public schools and allows music teachers to “practice what they teach.” The ensemble has been featured at the Illinois Music Educators Association conference and has performed for enthusiastic crowds at Millennium Park, South Shore Cultural Center, and Buddy Guy’s Legends.
