COURSE LISTINGS

The music audition serves two purposes: entrance for music majors into any

major. Instrumentalists and vocalists auditioning for the Jazz/Commercial Music concentration will need to prepare:

• Two jazz standard prepared pieces out of a fake book or Jamey Aebersold booklet: One blues and one long form standard. Acceptable examples for instrumentalists can be (but are not limited to) Billie’s Bounce and Oleo.

• Instrumental or vocal improvisation on at least one jazz standard is REQUIRED for advanced placement ensemble consideration. Accompaniment will be provided.

• Demonstrated knowledge of ALL Major scales. Demonstrate knowledge of Harmonic and Melodic Minor scales. Relative to the progress of your audition, you may be asked to play additional scale types/modes in the keys of our choice.

• IMPORTANT: self-composed selections are not appropriate for college auditions, unless you are submitting them for review for collegiate-level entrance into the BM in Composition and Theory degree program.

found under Audition Information on the Division of Music website (www.ju.edu/cfa/music)

Candidates audition before a music faculty committee that will evaluate technique, musicianship, tone quality, and sight-reading ability. Prepare carefully for your audition in order to perform as well as possible. An accompanist will be provided at no charge for on-site vocal auditions for scheduled audition days.

JU performing arts music students in the jazz program stay very busy, performing in at least two to three featured concerts per year, and also engage in concert performances at conferences, festivals and many local venues. They perform with a world-class jazz faculty, enabling some of the best personal jazz instruction available in an affordable private college environment.
