SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS

It is with great excitement that I ‘unveiled’ two large projectsover the past week. After numerous conversations, artificialgrass was laid behind E Block to the huge relief of our students. The selected grass is ‘premium’ with optimal drainage and noheat retention. Students have already begun playing on thesurface and smiles have been prominent on their faces. Thisgrounds improvement will have so many physical and healthbenefits for our students. REMEMBERANCE DAY

Last Friday I was overwhelmed by the heartfelt Remembranceceremony run during the 3-6 Assembly. Prior to recess at11am, all students in the school observed a 1 minute silence toremember the soldiers that fought for our country and honour100 years since the guns fell silent. I would like to thank MrsWhyte, Mrs Keast and Mr Gosper for their organisation ofthe service and congratulate the students for the respect theyshowed throughout.

NATIONALS!

Congratulations to Lucie F in Year 6 for another amazingachievement. Lucie has been successful in winning through tothe National Athletics Championships to be held in Melbourne.Lucie set a personal goal at the start of the year to make thechampionships and she has certainly achieved. In my manyyears on teaching, this is the first time a student at one of myschools has made the National championships and for Lucieto achieve this feat twice in one year in Cross Country andAthletics is a massive triumph. Congratulations and good luck!

Weather Warning

With the change in weather, and an increase in pollen beingblown through the sky, it reminds me of how the weather canaffect our senses, and how we need regular check-ups forthese. Some children develop hay fever or runny noses, whichcan affect a child’s hearing. Others eyes get scratchy, dry anduncomfortable.

So here is a brief note about the importance of regular eyesightand hearing check-ups. Just as adult eyesight and hearingabilities change as we get older (unfortunately), so too do thoseof our children. Recommendations have changed recently forhow often these should be checked.

As a general rule, with the increase of screen-time for children,it is recommended that eyesight be checked at critical phasesin a child’s life, particularly when there is change. An eyeexamination every 2 years if no vision correction is required,or annually if glasses are recommended. With 80% of what istaught in schools being presented visually, it is crucial that weregularly check their eyesight. It is recommended for childrento have their first eye test by age 3 (many children also getthem tested whilst at preschool). Conditions such as squinting

2

Page 3: Jasper Road Public School eNewsletter...An audiologist is the person to test your child’s hearing. Not all hearing centres / audiology clinics test children, so it is important to

and lazy eye can often be treated more effectively if picked upearlier.

Hearing is another sense which changes as you grow. Youngerchildren are more prone to glue eye and fluctuating hearingloss. As children grow, the shape of their head changes, whichallows the fluid from their noses to drain better. As they developthe ability to blow their noses independently, and hold theirnose whilst blowing to unblock their ears, there is an increasedability to regulate their hearing. They also begin to realise whenthey miss out on hearing things, although children with ahearing loss will often be able to develop compensatorystrategies to assist them coping in life. Some children also findthat they are unable to hear certain frequencies. Others are ableto hear frequencies which adults are unable to, which results inthem being over-sensitive and over-stimulated by noise.

An audiologist is the person to test your child’s hearing. Notall hearing centres / audiology clinics test children, so it isimportant to enquire as to whether they are suitable for yourchild. A referral from a GP may assist in a rebate for the costof the hearing assessment. Although all newborns undergoscreening at the hospital. For children, it is recommended to gettheir hearing tested before they start school, before Year 1, andany other time you are concerned about your child’s hearing orlearning/attention. When people reach 18, it is recommendedhearing be checked every 3 years as it often occurs gradually.

Once children are at school, things may often also be pickedup that are not apparent whilst at home or preschool. If you dohave any information or reports it can be useful for teachers tohave these.

If you would like any further information about hearing andeyesight do not hesitate to talk to your local GP.

Staff car parks

Please be reminded there is no parking for parents in theJasper Road staff car park between 7:30am and 4:30pm forsafety reasons. We do not have sufficient car spots for all staffmembers, meaning the car park is very full with cars oftenneeding to double park. As such, we cannot accommodateparents/carers driving into this car park during these hours. Please make use of the pick-up / drop-off zone on JasperRoad.

Staffing 2019

Forming classes is a complex process.

Due to an unknown number of new enrolments and studentdepartures, a definite class structure will be provided next year.As with many schools, class numbers are changing constantly.Staffing in schools is determined by a staffing formuladependent on the number of students enrolled in each grade inthe school. This is why we regularly request that you to let usknow what your plans are for the following year.

We will not know the exact number of students or classes untilour kindergarten students arrive for their first day in 2019.

2019 class teacher allocation for Years 1 to 6 will be revealednext year after the final numbers are confirmed. Therefore, please don’t inquire about the allocation of teachers are as wedo not know at this stage.

All staff across the school are trained to teach all grades K-6.

Peer Support

This year all students from K-6 at Jasper Road Public Schoolare participating in a five week, Peer Support Program. Thisprogram is a student-led multi age program which provides afun and engaging environment for students to address socialissues. It encourages peer connections throughout the schooland assists students in developing practical skills to enhancesocial and emotional well-being, allowing students to formrelationships as well as develop empathy and a sense ofresponsibility for students which they might not typically engagewith. This process supports us to achieve and maintain apositive school culture. It empowers students to support eachother and contribute positively to our school and community. It caters for student wellbeing, student leadership with teachersupport and helps to develop a supportive learningenvironment.

All year 6 and some year 5 students undertook an intensive½ day training course to enable them to lead their allocatedgroup of up to 8 students through a series of sessions, whichare based on our particular focus of developing resilience or theability to “bounce back”. The structure and content combinedseek to build protective factors such as sense of self, sense ofpossibility, connectedness and resilience, as well as establish ashared language across the school community.

Happy National Recycling Week!

On Wednesday, Arbors visited all classes to educate theirbuddy classes on recycling. This included the paper recyclingand what can and can not be placed in the school recyclingboxes. Fruit break waste that can be used in both our wormfarms and compost bins and why we should use them. Wetrialled a bottle/can collection point near the canteen onWednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. Results willbe shared in the next newsletter, once we take the cans andbottles collected to Return and Earn.

The week, KB have been working on a recycled art project. Ican’t wait to see their masterpieces. KN and KY used recycledwrappers as part of their props for their assembly item. S1Fdiscussed the reasons why we should recycle and learnt thatour planet needs us to look after it for future generations.

Fundraising Committee Opportunities – Newstructure!

Due to some of our key members moving interstate or overseasin the past 12 months and more sadly leaving us at the endof the year we are seeking new members to join the JRPSFundraising Committee.

Currently meetings are held on Wednesday’s (Weeks 2, 5 & 8of each term) at 9:15am in the Cottage but we are consideringchanging days if we can get enough parents wanting to attendan alternative day. If you are keen on joining the committeenext year please email [email protected] or PM uson the Facebook Fundraising Page with your interest andpreferred days.

If you are unable to attend meetings but would still love to helpyou can volunteer, however, next year we are also opening upthe opportunity for any of the school community to co-ordinateevents such as discos, Mothers/Fathers’ Day stalls, Trivia Night,5c Challenge, Comedy Night and Kindy Orientations withoutactually having to attend meetings.

Opening up events to the wider community allows us theopportunity to restructure how the events run and make surethat the work is shared out evenly… many hands make lightwork.

A fundraising co-ordinator will liaise with the P&C and overseeall the event organisers who themselves will have manualprocedures or verbal assistance for all the help they need to runthe event….so all the hard work has already been done for you.

In upcoming newsletters, we will publish the events for 2019and all available positions for each event (some need severalco-ordinators). If you see any you are interested in, we wouldlove for you to put up your hand.

Due to personal reasons after 3 years I am stepping backfrom the current Fundraising President role but will still helpco-ordinate some events. I would have been super keen withthe restructure to take on the Fundraising Co-ordinator rolewith its lesser involvement but am unable to fully commit whichmeans that key position on the Committee along with Secretaryand Media/Communications
