OnNovember27,2006,Croatiangovernmenthasopenedanewmemorialatthesiteofthe

notoriousJasenovacdeathcampcomplexinWesternSlavonia.ThedemocraticCroatian

governmentapparentlymadesuretheUstashas[CroatNazis]wouldvebeenproudofthis

shamefulexhibit,asoneoftheJewishsurvivorsoftheCroatWWIIbestialitycommentedatthe

time.

WhileDirectoroftheSimonWiesenthalCentersIsraeloffice,EfraimZuroff,criticized

organizersoftheexhibitionforfailingtonameanyoftheperpetratorsofhorrendousJasenovac

massmurders,foromittingtoexplainbackgroundofthefuriousexterminationoftheCroatias

Serbian,JewishandRomapopulationandUstashaideologythatledtopathologicalhatredand

genocide,Zuroffseemedtoacceptthescandalousreductionofanumberofthepeople

murderedinJasenovacdeathcampcomplex,leavinganoverallimpressionthatCroatiais

nonetomildreactiontowhatamountstoCroatHolocaustdenialonastatelevel,asmost

Ms.SmiljaTima:Ofcourse.IwouldfindtimeforthisevenifIdidnothaveit.

TheypretendthatitisaMuseumandanewpresentation butitisnotaMuseum.Youenter

intodarkcorridors,darkroomswithonlyweakelectricbulbsilluminatingthesocalledexhibits.

Attheplacesofpresentationtherearemonitorsthatshowphotographsinaloop.Forexample,

onedepictsthetransportofmiserable,poorchildren.Youdonotknowwhothesechildrenare,

orwheretheyarefrom,orwheretheyarebeingtaken,orwhomtheybelongto.Youdonot

knowwhatishappeningorwhere.

Atotherplacesyouwillhavetosquatdownalmosttothefloor,asthereisabulbthere,or

bendallthewaydown,ifyouareabletobendsomuchandhavehadthelucktonoticethe

lightinthefirstplace.Bending,youwillreadalabeltellingyouwhatwillbepresented.After

thisyouwillhavetowaitwhatfeelsliketenminutesuntilthepresentationstartsandthenyou

willhavetoquicklyreadthetexttheyshowonthemonitor.

Itisinaccessibleforanaveragepersonandevenworseforold,frailindividualswhoarealready

underconsiderableanxiety,astheirfamiliesperishedhere.

2.TheexhibitionfalselycutsthenumberofpeoplemurderedatJasenovacandtrivializesthe

genocideagainsttheSerbs.

fromJasenovac]whereIwasfirsttaken,therewasahugeroomwheretheyseparatedchildren

fromtheirmothers.CroatianUstaafamiliesadoptedsome;otherstheysenttoJasenovac;

thousands,includingmeandmytwosistersandbrother,theysenttoJastrebarsko,whichthey

setupexclusivelyforchildren.ThatswithoutevenmentioningJasenovacitself,orStara

Gradika,orSisak,oralltheirothercamps.

On27January2007,whichtheUnitedNationshasdesignatedasHolocaustRemembranceDay,

thegovernmentofSerbiaandtheJewishcommunityheldacommemorationinBelgrade.Mr.

CadikDanon,aformerJasenovacinmatehespent17monthsthere,escapingin1943gavea

speech.BracothatshisnicknamesaidthatattheendofthewartheCroatsmanagedto

wipeoutalltracesofJasenovac.Nowtheyhavedoneitagain,inanewway:noneoftheUstaa

murdertools,theheavymallets,theknives,thebrickfactoryoventhatwasconstructedfor

bakingbricksbutwasusedtoburnpeople,whowerethrowninaliveandfullyconsciousor

alreadyhalfdead,noneofthatisondisplayorcanbereadaboutthere.

Skendi:WhatabouttheinfamousphotographsthattheUstaetook,stagingphonyscenes

presentingJasenovacasalaborcampinpreparationforthe[WorldWarII]InternationalRed

Crossvisit?Arethosephotographsdisplayedonpanels?

Tima:Thereisnothingleftofanyofthephotographsthatweredisplayedbefore,inthe

museumthatwasatJasenovacbeforethebreakupofYugoslavia,nophotographsofanykind

onthepanels.Again,youhavetostandnexttoTVmonitorsandwaituntilsomephotographs

appear,butthesewillbepresentedwithoutexplanatorytext,soavisitorenterssomespace

andviewssomethingandthenexitswithoutanynotionwheretheywereorwhattheyhave

seen.Itisallreallywellthoughtoutwithaclearintentiontocamouflagethecrimes,the

murders,tocamouflagewhodiditandhowitwasdoneandwhy.BracoDanonmentionedin

hisspeechthattheUstaetookpleasureintheircraft,mutilatingtheirvictims,makingthemdie

overperiods

that

easily

lasted

for

hours.

The

exhibition

hides

all

this.

The

organizers

did

their

besttopresentJasenovacasalaborcamp.

5.TheMuseumcommitteecontactedandmadeplanswiththeOrganizationofSurvivors,then

snubbedthem.

Skendi:Itseemstomequitebravethatyoudaredtogothere,tothatplaceofyoursuffering.

Tima:Theyinvitedus.ThemuseumcontactedtheOrganizationofSurvivorsinBelgrade

proposingthatwecontributetotheexhibition.Weagreedthattheywouldfilmtenorfifteen

survivorsgivingeyewitnessaccountsaboutvariousUstaadeathcamps:Jasenovac,Jastrebac,

StaraGradika,Sisak,Jastrebarsko.

Theyweretosendacameraman,attheirexpense,inMayof2006,maybemidJuneatthe

latest.Ifoundthesurvivorswhoweretoparticipate.Peoplestartedaskingwhenitwould

happen.Iphonedthemuseumbutnobodyanswered.IwrotetoNataaJovii,theexhibition

director.Nobodyreplied.

Despitethis,wewenttotheopening.ThreeofusrepresentedourOrganizationofSurvivors:

me,asPresident;Mr.DragoljubAckovi,aRomarepresentative,thechildofasurvivor;andMs.

BrigitaKneevi,whohadbeenarrestedasachild,nottwoyearsold,andbroughttothe

Jastrebarskocamp.Shewaslateradopted;thatiswhyshesurvived.Alltold,therewere40to

50survivorsattheopening.

6.Thesurvivorswereignoredandabusedattheopeningceremony.

Tima:Theydidnotevenacknowledgeourpresence.

Skendi:NoteventointroduceyouandsayWehavesomesurvivorswithus?

Wecamebyinvitation.Theygaveusnametags.Weweretoldthatrightafterspeechesby

CroatianPrimeMinisterSanaderandPresidentMesi,andaftertheribbonwascut,thenwe,

thesurvivors,wouldenterfirst.Yousee,weweresupposedtobeimportant,butwhenthetime

cametoenter,wewerepushedaround.

TheeventwasonaconcretepavedareainfrontoftheMuseum.Afterthespeeches,wewere

shovedasidebythecrowd,pushedoffourfeet,ontothegrass.Astherehadbeensomerainfor

afew

days,

we

got

quite

muddy.

We

were

among

the

last

to

go

in.

Enteringtheexhibition,manycouldnotorientthemselves.AsItoldyou,thecorridorsare

barelylit.

7.Theexhibitionclaimstobefocusedonthevictimsasindividuals,butinfacteventheir

namesareunreadable.

Skendi:In2004,Dr.MilanBulaji,founderoftheMuseumofVictimsofGenocideinBelgrade,wrotethatCroatianauthoritieswereplanningaJasenovacexhibitionthatwouldnot

includeUstaamurdertoolsorphotographsofUstaacrimesandthatthissuppressionof

evidencewasjustifiedwiththeabsurdargumentthat,asJasenovacMemorialdirectorNataa

Jovii wasquotedsaying,"Wearenotgoingtolegitimizethekilling,butwillinstead

commemoratethevictims."Asifitsomehowlegitimizesacrimetoshowwhodidit,howthey

diditandwhy.Thisgoesalongwithwhatyoureportedthatthemuseumdeliberatelyfailsto

informpeopleabouttheUstaacrimes,personnelandbeliefs,includingtheirfanaticaland

murderjustifyingCatholicism,andfalselyportraysJasenovacasalaborcamp.

Aftertheexhibitionopened27November,AssociatedPressquotedNataaJovii sayingthat,

regardingthelistofsixtyninethousandnamesthatyoumentioned,"Thelistsaimwasto

presentvictimsbyshowingtheirindividualfates,collectiveandindividualsuffering,theirplans

andhopesthatweredestroyedwhentheirlivesweretaken." AndAssociatedPressquotedan

advisorfromtheUSgovernmentsHolocaustMuseuminWashingtonagreeingwithJovii,

"sayingitwasimportanttopresenttheindividualvictims.Itsaboutme,aboutyou,about

everyone.Itsabouthumanbeings."

Somyquestionis,arethereanydisplaysthat"presenttheindividualvictims"?

Tima:Idontknowwhattheyaretalkingabout.Thelistof69,000includesnodetailsabout

thevictimsandnothingabouthowfamiliesweredestroyed.Asforindividualnames,allyoucan

see,hunguphighintheairandflutteringaround,aresomeplasticstripswithprisonersnames,

whichyoucanteasilyread,andtheareastheycamefrom,Slavonia,Kozara[mountain],Kordun

orLika[inSerbianKrajinaJ.S.].ItdoesnotsaywhethertheprisonerswereethnicSerbs,Jews

orRoma,orthatsomefewmayhavebeenhonestCroats.OurestimateisthatethnicCroatians

madeup0.3percentofdeathcampprisoners threeinonethousand.

Mr.Luki andagroupofvolunteersworkedforacoupleofyearsafterWorldWarIIinfive

countiesintheKozaramountaindistrict,talkingtofamilies.[KozaraisaSerbianmajorityareain

Bosniathathadastrongpartisanresistance.ItistheareawheretheGermanforceinwhich

KurtWaldheim,wholaterbecameUNSecretaryGeneralandPresidentofAustria,andwhowas

aNaziofficerinWorldWarII,committedinfamousatrocitiesJ.S.]

Theylistedonlythosechildrenaboutwhomtheycouldfindallbiographicalinformation the

firstandlastnames,dateandplaceofbirth,parentsnames andinthiswaydocumentedthat

morethannineteenthousandchildrenfromonedistrictweremurderedintwocamps.But

whataboutchildrenfromBanija,Kordun[intheSerbianKrajina]?Whataboutotherdistrictsin

theUstaesIndependentCroatia?Forexample,formanycountiesinmyregion,Slavonia[also

inKrajina],thereisnotownandnochildlistedinMr.Lukisbook.Whataboutallthechildren

whodied

in

other

camps,

such

as

Jastrebarsko?

AnexhibitionaboutthemurderedchildrencreatedbythelateMr.Luki isnowinBari,Italy,as

partoftheSerbianItaliancooperationproject,BridgeBelgradeRome.InItalytherearestill

somepeoplewhorespecttruthandjusticeandhatefascismandwhatitdidduringWWII.This

exhibition,withphotographs,waspresentedatDomArmije[theArmyClubinBelgrade]forthe

firsttimeafewyearsago.Againtheexhibitionincludesonlysomenineteenthousandnames

thatMr.Luki'shelperswereabletocollect.ThechildrenfromKozaramountainonly.

Thathastobesaideverytimeonetalksaboutthisexhibit,andpeopledon'talwaysdothat.

Forexample,inaspeechgivenattheHolocaustRemembranceceremony,Mr.Mirkovi from

theMuseumofGenocideVictims[foundedinBelgrade],speakinginthenameoftheMuseum,

forgottomentionthatnineteenthousandrepresentsonlyasmallportionoftheentirenumber

ofchildrenthatperished.HealsoforgottomentionwhichareasofUstashaCroatiathis

exhibitionisabout,andwhatareasarenotcovered.

9.OntheattempttominimizetheCroatianHolocaustbyclaimingthatmostCroatiandeath

campswerenotpartoftheJasenovacsystem.

Tima:No,theCroatscleverlyexcludedJastrebarsko,whichisinZagreb[capitalofCroatia];by

theircalculation,theJasenovacsystemwouldincludeonlyadjacentplaceslikeStaraGradika.

ButwhataboutthetownofSisak[about160kmupriverfromJasenovacJ.S.]?Nowhereisit

mentionedaspartoftheJasenovacsystem.IwasinSisakwithmymotherandsiblingsfora

coupleofmonthsandthatiswheresomanywereseparatedfromtheirparents.Manypeople

weretakenfromtheretoJasenovac.Allthosesatellitecampswereintertwinedpartsofasingle

Jasenovacsystem.

[Note:ItisimportantwhetherornotJastrebarskoandotherCroatianUstaadeathcampsare

countedaspartoftheJasenovaccomplex.In1989,FranjoTudjman,leaderoftheCroatian

secessionists,publishedabookthatbecameinfamous.Itstitle,Bespuapovijesnezbiljnosti,is

obscureinSerboCroatianandworsewhenyoutranslateitintoEnglish,somethinglike

Wastelandsofhistoricalreality/truth.Butthereisnothingobscureaboutthecontents.

Tudjmanclaimedthatnomorethan900,000JewsdiedintheHolocaustandthatitwasJews

(nottheUstae)whomurderedSerbsandRomainJasenovac.Healsoclaimedthatnot600,000

ormore,butsometensofthousandsofpeoplediedatJasenovac.Tudjman'scampaignto

revisethenumberofUstaavictimsdownwardby90to95%servedthemostpowerfulforces

intheUSandGermany,whoseattempttodepictCroatiansecessionistsasfightingforfreedom

waseasierifpeopledidnotknowthatthelasttimeCroatiasecededtheywipedoutathirdof

theSerbianpopulation.OnewaytolimittheperceivednumberofUstaavictimshasbeento

limitthenumberofcampscountedaspartoftheJasenovacsystem.Thatiswhy,inher

TheUstaetookhimawayon17May1941andweneversawhimagain.Ionlylearnedmuch

laterandbyaccident,fromoneofthesurvivorswhoparticipatedinthebreakoutfrom

Jasenovacandwhohadbeenarrestedatthesametimeasmyfatherandwentthroughthe

sameexperiences,thatonemorningtheyfoundmyfather,nexttothatbrickfactoryoven,

dead.Howdidhedie?TheUstaewerekillingthosepoorinmateswherevertheywantedandin

MyfatherwasfromthevillageofKistanje,inKrajina,about20kmawayfromthecityofKnin,

towardtheAdriaticsea.TheareaiscalledDalmatinskaZagoraandwasoverwhelmingly

Serbianpopulated.Myfamilycametothisareainthe16thand17thcenturies,whenthe

SerbianpeopleranawayfromTurkishatrocities.PortionsofthefamilycamefromKosovoand

alsofrompartsofBosnia.

MymotherwasfromSlavonia[partofSerbianKrajina]andherfamilycametherefromthen

TurkishcontrolledHerzegovina.

IwasborninWesternSlavonia.GrandpaAndreja,myfathersfather,wasavolunteerwho

joinedtheSerbiantroopsinWWI.Hewaswoundedandasaresultofhisseverewoundshe

diedin1923.MygrandmotherMarijathensoldwhattheyhadintheKninareaandmovedto

Slavoniathinkingthatwewouldbelesshungrythere,soIwasborninSlavoniainthehousewe

bought.ItwasfromSlavoniathattheUstaepickedupmyfamilyandbroughtustodeath

camps.ThenameofourvillageinSlavonia,populatedbySerbs,wasZrinjska[pronouncedZree

nyska],inGrubiskoPolje[pronouncedGroobeeshkoPolye]county.Thevillagesaroundours

werealsoSerbianpopulatedvillages.
