Site Investigation

Brim CC is a small Japanese Oraganic Café that has been opperating for just over 6 years. They located on Little Collins Street between Kings Street and Spencer Street.

They occupy a ground floor shop within an 8 storey complex that is located in a small strip of shops that has a number of office buildings, apartments and a university surrounds it.

Design Proposal

The design that has been chosen for the space will offer:

- A cost effective solution - Functional spaces - A better use of space - Recycled materials

Demographic, historical and cultural findings of the area

Brim CC get a lot of foot traffic as they are located near Spencer Street station. They get most of their business during lunchtime and also in the evenings for dinner. They are open only on week days from 10.00am - 9.00pm. A lot of their business is takeaway.

Explanation of the design development

In the proposed design I will be looking to:

- Improve the flow of traffic eg. for takeaway customers - Keep the original seating numbers but improve the seating options - Make the space more user friendly for the staff

I have done this by:

- Moving and redesigning the POS counter - Including a small waiting area near the door with 2 seats - Moving wall between the shop and storage area to increase the amount of space available in the shop front - Separating the storage area into an office and store room to enable these spaces to be more functional - Increasing storage and bench space in the kitchen

In addition to this:

- The kitchen will remain where it is as the services will be difficult and costly to relocate due to the concrete slab - Current materials will be retain where possible to reduce cost and waste - I have also based my design and choices on their feasibility. If this project was to actually go ahead would it be the most suitable for the business?

The colour palate for the Japanese Café is neutral

with a combination of white and timber finishes.

Pops of colour have been introduced with the

addition of colourful furniture.

Timber has been used to give a natural warm feel

to the space and the white gives a clean, fresh and

open feel to compliment the organic food.
