J.A.N.U.B. is an idea that starts from
the need of sharing knowledge. It’s a
digital platform that develops into an
interpretative container of information.
It deals with exchanging looks able to
keep track of different themes through
a multidisciplinary approach. The first
scope is to develop analysis capable of
interpret contemporary matters on a global
scale. Than to apply that observations to
the “Southern part” of the World.
The second and main scope is to carry
out and focus the results of the analysis
process experimenting and developing
real projects, artworks or exhibitions as
well as archiving, communicating, and
contextualizing our work.
The projects become authentic holder of
otherwise ideological concepts.

The Sud Est Railways nowadays are no
longer functional and comfortable. In
spite of that for J.A.N.U.B. they continue
to have their fundamental importance in
the process of decrypting Salento and
its landscape, in each one of its parts.
They represent an historic binder that
links different identities. In our idea,
the rail cars should become vehicle of
information, some kind of blog interface,
wagon of a new urban development. Slow
vehicles (50kmh) that reflect a slow way
of living. A new type of vanguard where
chaos and congestion takes their time to
become former values. Our scope is to
create activities inside Sud Est rail cars
in order to extend the catchment area
of the railways, reducing directly the
environmental impact (more trains, less
cars) and transforming the commuter train
users into active actors of this change.

J.A.N.U.B. (south, in Arabic) wants itself
to be an urban research laboratory, that
faces the matters of contemporary cities
with a multidisciplinary approach.
After a social-economic analysis of the
city of Lecce, J.A.N.U.B. starts up a
relation system between the work market
(and its matters), the actual problems
coming from migrations, the capability of
art-crafts, specially if applied to public
spaces. The project idea is to enhance
the historical workers ability and the
traditional hand-crafted techniques.
The scope is to hand down traditional
techniques to young generations,
including the ethnic minorities as to
lead them to a real social inclusion. In a
second time the project plans an urban
yard that will realize two catalyst artworks,
looking glass for the citizens’ hope.

The starting point of the project is that
the endogenous development is a process
generated from the existing connections
between two macro areas: the environment
sustainability and the integration between
urban politics and the economic fabric of
society. The architectural project is the
result of research of raw local materials
and hand crafted techniques in relation
to the analysis of costs. The adopted
typology is an interpretation of the
‘courtyard house’ in which the vital spaces
are transformed places of socialisation
and of economic production through the
dialogic relationship between the internal
and the external dimensions. These nuclei
foresee an expansion through an ‘A-B’
relationship, related to the economic
concept of Bataille that projects a
utilisation of the land without the need of
building.

Puerto Madero. The prosperous area of
Buenos Aires has become a metropolitan
battlefield: here within the speculative
schizophrenia of the contemporary
market economy, capital vices are clearly
conveyed in architectural terms.
As a parody, it may appear as a suggestion
for Post-Humanity: “Roll up! Roll
up! All creatures great and small, the
cities need you”. Like an Architekton,
our project explores gravity’s force
transforming the three bio-zones into
artificial planets meeting by chance on
earth’s surface, having the ability to be
conquered in a programmed manner by
a future civilisation that is perhaps more
deserving inhabitants of this terrestrial
globe. A succession of “dialectic” rooms
for living, naturally powered by sun, and
sanitised, creating a healthy refuge for the
characters of the comedy: the animals.

The image of a metropolis spilled over its
territory extend itself below the ancient
plateau: the result is a tangled urban
diversity, hard to be defined because of its
fluid structure.
From this point on starts the challenge
of Architecture: how can you foresee and
form a place, or a spatial organization,
sometimes even a cultural mood, without
putting everything into a concrete form.
Plug in the node, the articulation, the
woof able to encourage the dialogue
between pre-existing non-homogeneous
parts becomes now the main spot.
Building up new possible universes,
our architecture structures the plot
through geometrical harmonies, based
on synchronized forms and dimensional
rhythms able to generate volumetric
complexity and a multiplicity of views.
architecture
This represents a neutral linguistic choice,
at least an abstract one, that melts itself
with an opposite concept: the will of
express symbolical meanings through the
geometry built.
The shapes of the residential roof,
representing some parasitic splinters
that try to join themselves to the main
volumes, become some kind of molecules,
as much as the dried crack designed
at the ground level, that symbolize the
arid urban patterns typical of the urban
structure of middle-eastern cities, are
clear samples of our design process.

The architect, like a traveler getting off
the new train below the new station,
decide to go out towards the new
complexity, free from the smell of
baroque, hanging all over him. Coming
out from the new terminal, he want to
uncover the constitutional elements of the
history of that places: the stone, with its
hardness and its color, light, porosity has
been revalued from the old garbage dump
to the new architectonic front.
The stones, one by one, steel over steel,
glass and ceramics, every material joined
to the rest into a sort of “jam session”,
expressing the rhythm of the architectonic
recover. Multifaceted forms anchor
themselves to the crag border; sometimes
they become pure volumes, sometimes
they will appear carved with small
crossings of light, that dilate into the open
space of the new park and the new city.

Al Iskandariya, Egypt
Istanbul, Turkey
designed by
Afro C. Carpentieri
Enrico Clerici
Our work takes as test cities Istanbul and
Alexandria of Egypt, two metropolis in the
Eastern Mediterranean with a legendary
background, nowadays about to face a
reorganization of the rail network that
will involve the construction of a new rail
terminal.
The comparative approach we used made
much of our thesis: both the future train
stations will vest their crucial areas with
new functions, because of their proximity
to the present terminal but also for the
closeness to the historical heritage of
Istanbul (Topkapi Imperial Palace) and
Alexandria (archeological venues).
We think that designing a new rail station
in Istanbul and Alexandria of Egypt will
be a matter that goes over some purely
technical aspects, involving different
scales: first of all, we obviously need to
consider the regional network plugged in
with the new railway service, on the other
side we also have to foresee the urban
and functional structure due to the new
conditions of accessibility.
Consistently with all this premises,
the thesis carries on a project over the
new railway terminal of Al Iskandariya,
in Egypt, starting from the hypothesis
to lay underground the tracks coming
from Il Cairo, essential to let the train
to pass through the city and reach the
new settlements in the western side of
Alexandria.
After designing the technical architecture
of the excavation for the rail track and
the platforms, our project set up a
general reorganization of the ground
level, increasing the public facilities of
the whole area. The intervention grows
mainly under the ground level as to set
direct connections between the new
underground station, the old rail terminal
and the archeological area of the theater
and the forum. We suggest through our
project an access tunnel that will lead
to the archeological excavations. The
rhythm is measured thanks to a sequence
of different spaces that, as a real public
gallery, will receive modern artworks
besides the historic memorabilia.

Imagine now to pass through the wall of
the brownfield land of the ex “Acciaierie
Falck”, where the production line was
used to time and limit every kind of
action. In this empty space, nowadays
we can lose the meaning of our behavior.
Right here new landscapes appears, more
similar to some kind of a new logical
sequence, than the ones that we knew
before.
We perceive the need to imagine there a
project, never stiff into old pattern, but
able to slough off following the infinite
changes of the context. This feature find
its direct representation thanks to the
concept of the fold.
The park we designed becomes, through
its concave and convex shapes, an unique
element able to build up new hierarchies
between the focal points of the project.
urban
We believe that, coping with the matters
of a certain city or region, we should try
to get through all the different scales that
represent the spatial phenomenon we are
facing. Right for this reason we look for
every architectonic chance taken in our
project, investigating their ability to solve
social and urban problems.

The daily life of an Indian man, shown
through his slow walk and his still look,
is set against one of the old gate of Lecce
and the passing movement of the facing
square.
Sukdev get everyday started in the shadow
of a narrow street in the historical center
of Lecce. Just accompanied with his
squeaky stand, he get till his square ready
for another workday. Lights and shadows
all over this man’s face, still ornament
to the transitory, stand like echoes of a
different South, told through the eager
wait for the comeback to India.

An audio-visual archive starts up from an
occasional encounter with a film: the need
of self safeguard is mixed up with the
politic demand of information.
During the early eighties, Rodrigo Diaz
take on own the film over El Salvador, a
documentary on the politic situation in
Central America. It’s a film shoot by a
Dutch troupe in 1980, with a voice over in
Spanish.
Rodrigo takes with him all around Italy
this 16mm copy, translating every time
the text. This particular experience
takes him to collect more and more
material, until he could build up the
foot of the archive of the “Associazione
per la Promozione della Cultura Latino
Americana in Italia”.

Bioritmo is a festival that has brought
eco-friendly. The communications
project proposal pushed further by using
waste paper and a process that involved
the press but drilling support. The
communication including postcards and
posters, whose final form was developed
after a series of practical tests on the
materials being drilled and drilling tools.
The example of Biorhythm is a significant
desire for communication that goes
beyond the classic printing industry, to
bring nearer ecological requirements and
communication process, maximizing the
potential of the different resources out of
the mainstream press, paying attention a
issues related not only to environment but
to human and social context, using tools
and items that can be found at hand.
A visual communication that can used
printing systems self dependent.

artistic profile
Soulfiero (Lecce,1983) is basically a dj selector operating
all around Italy in the last decade, cooperating with different
independent music channels.
His selections space out from new and rare funk to soul and reggae,
till more modern electronic sound works.
His eclectic style makes him to be a kind of alchemist of sounds,
able to investigate into retro atmospheres mixing them with more
contemporary sounds.
