Reflecting on God’s Word
They were men in love with the lights of night—astrologers, star‐gazers, meaning‐makers tuned in to the signs in the heavens, as Matthew tells it. A strange star moving across the sky led them into Israel. Arriving in Jerusalem, they asked where the newborn king of the Jews was, so they could offer homage.
Herod was less than delighted, indeed “greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him,” at hearing of a new king on the block (Matthew 2:3). But he assembled the chief priests and the scribes, who remembered that the prophet Micah had proclaimed that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
So they set out again, with Herod’s duplicitous request whispered into their ears. The star reappeared and led them to the house where the child and his mother were. Falling down in worship, they offered gifts, and went back home. End of story—as we like to remember it.
Of course, that is not the end. Receiving no word, Herod is enraged and orders the death of all children under the age of two. Joseph, Mary, and the child flee to Egypt. Power does not welcome competition, even in the form of a child.
But God wills all people to know salvation. Jesus came to draw all into the reign of God and to empower them to live the God‐life that is the Father’s gift. The darkness of evil continues to threaten but it will not overcome as long as there are those who seek the light, follow it, and allow it to lead them to the child.

Eran hombres enamorados de las luces celestes—astrólogos, observadores de las estrellas, sabios sintonizados con los signos celestes, tal como lo dice Mateo. Una estrella extraña, que se movía por el firmamento, los dirigió hacia Israel. Al llegar a Jerusalén preguntaron dónde estaba el rey de los judíos recién nacido para adorarlo.
Herodes no estaba nada contento; es más, “se alarmó y con él toda Jerusalén” al saber del nuevo rey (Mateo 2:3). Así fue que convocó a los jefes de los sacerdotes y a los escribas, quienes recordaron lo que había proclamado el profeta Miqueas acerca del Mesías que nacería en Belén.
Así es que los sabios se pusieron en camino de nuevo, con la petición engañosa que Herodes les había susurrado al oído. Por supuesto que éste no es el final. Al no recibir noticias Herodes se enfurece y ordena la muerte de todos los niños menores de dos años. José, María y el niño huyen a Egipto. El poder no admite competencia, ni aun en la forma de un niño.
Pero Dios quiere que todas las personas se salven. Jesús vino a llevar a todos al reino de Dios y a habilitarlos de manera que puedan vivir la vida que Dios Padre les ha ofrecido como don. Las tinieblas del mal continúan amenazando, pero no vencerán mientras haya personas que buscan la luz, la siguen y dejan que esa luz las conduzca hasta el niño.

“The Ups and Downs of Diabetes” At Little Company of Mary Hospital
Little Company of Mary Hospital will be offering a program, “The Ups and Downs of Diabetes” on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 8:00 am until 10:00 am in the Link. A light breakfast will be served. Topics will include changes in diabetic treatment, Nutrition and well‐being, Positive Thinking, and Keeping Active. Registration will begin at 7:30 am and the cost is $5.00. Seating is limited.
ATTENTION: Everyone is asked to pick up their photos from the Altar of the Dead in the rectory. Pictures will not be saved for next year’s altar.

BEARING GIFTS The magi brought gifts to the baby Jesus. What gifts do you bring to the Lord? You might have the gift of patience or understanding and bring this gift in your interactions with others. You might have a talent for bringing new ideas and creative insights into situations at home, work, parish, or your city. You might have a gift for helping people to work together for a great cause or purpose. All of these gifts have been given to you by God, to be used for God’s purposes, for God’s greater glory. All of these are glimpses of God’s grace, and like Saint Paul, you are called to be a good steward of them, as a sign of Christ’s life within you. You bring your gifts to the Lord by using them well, sharing them generously and responsibly in caring for others and for all of creation.
TRAYENDO REGALOS Los magos llevaron regalos al niño Dios. ¿Qué regalos llevas tú al Señor? Quizá tienes el don de la paciencia o comprensión y llevar este don en la forma como te relacionas con los demás. Quizá tienes un talento para ofrecer ideas nuevas e intuiciones creativas para tu hogar, trabajo, parroquia o tu ciudad. Quizá tienes un don para ayudar a las personas a que trabajan juntas por una causa o propósito importantes. Todos estos dones te fueron entregados por Dios para usarse para los propósitos de Dios, para su mayor gloria. Todos estos son destellos de la gracia de Dios y, como san Pablo, tú estás llamado para ser un buen corresponsable con ellos, como un signo de la vida de Cristo dentro de ti. Tú llevas tus talentos al Señor al darle buenos usos, compartiéndolos generosa y responsablemente cuidando de los demás y a toda la creación.
St. Mary Star of the Sea School is excited to announce that we will be starting our winter season of Baby Stars. This is a fun-filled class just for the younger set of students in our parish community. Children ages 18 months to 3 years are invited to attend our bi-lingual classes held on Mondays from 9-10 AM beginning January 13th. Please call our school office to register the week of January 6th. There is absolutely no cost for this program. We ask only that you pre-register each week so we can anticipate the class size. Call 773.767.6160.
Parents are asked to sit down on the carpet with their child, while participating in song, dance or other movement. For this reason, children and parents dress casually and comfortably to sit during circle time, wearing clothing that allows full movement and participation. We ask that each child wear long pants, to avoid knee scrapes. The program includes circle time, music, songs, dance, rhythm, stories, an obstacle course, play dough and parachute fun. Please see the pictures below for some exciting memories from our fall program.
La escuela Sta. Maria Estrella del Mar se complace en anunciar que comenzaremos nuestra temporada de invierno de Baby Stars. Esta es una clase llena de diversión solo para los ninos de nuestra comunidad parroquial. Los niños de 18 meses a 3 años están invitados a asistir a nuestras clases bilingües que se realizan los lunes de 9 a 10 de la mañana a partir del 13 de enero. Por favor llame a la oficina de nuestra escuela para registrarse la semana del 6 de enero. No hay absolutamente ningún costo para este programa. Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday (English) or 1st Thursday (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.
MARRIAGES: Arrangements should be made at least 4 months in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation and instruction. Contact the Rectory for an appointment.
CONVERTS: RCIA The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception into the Church at the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.
COMMUNION CALLS: Please call the Rectory to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick.
SICK CALLS: For confession, anointing of the sick or in any emergency, please call the Rectory.
