Why benchmark? It’s simple. At the JH, benchmark assessments are given once a school year (during second semester) in order to measure students’ progress and provide teachers with data on how to adjust instruction. It provides valid feedback in what students need in order to be successful. It monitors student strengths and weaknesses. It helps us to move in the right direction to meet the needs of ALL students. Are they aligned? Yes, definitely. The benchmarks given are aligned with state standards. What if my child doesnt know everything on the test? GREAT QUESTION! There may be a few questions on the test your child may not recognize because there may be certain concepts teachers have not covered yet. There are concepts/skills/ TEKS that are still being taught right up to the last day of school! Benchmark assessments provide a glimpse of what students know so teachers are able to adjust instruction accordingly to ensure student mastery. We tell our kiddos, quote: “All we can ask of you is to do your VERY best.” We ask our students to truly try and to work hard. We encourage our students to show text evidence, prove answers, work out problems, use certain strategies that work for them, etc. in order to “think out” their thought process and /or to check their work. We also inform our hard working students that we look at EVERY SINGLE student’s test results and analyze all data to ensure student success for ALL students. Although this is just “practice” we want all students to give it their all and do their very best. The next time we shut down and test will be for the REAL DEAL!! So with that being said, we ask that you please make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before and that he/she has a good break- fast in the morning. Your child’s attendance on benchmarking days are very important so we advise you to reschedule any doctor or dentist appointments to a later date. It is also crucial that your child arrives at school on time so that they can get to their testing location as quickly as possible and begin testing on time. “Where Every Child Counts”

Thank you for your assistance in

helping your child have a successful

benchmark testing experience!

Why benchmark? It’s simple. At the JH, benchmark assessments are given once a school

year (during second semester) in order to measure students’ progress and provide teachers with

data on how to adjust instruction. It provides valid feedback in what students need in order to be

successful. It monitors student strengths and weaknesses. It helps us to move in the right direction

to meet the needs of ALL students.

Are they aligned? Yes, definitely. The benchmarks given are aligned with state standards.

What if my child doesn’t know everything on the test?

GREAT QUESTION! There may be a few questions on the test your child may not recognize

because there may be certain concepts teachers have not covered yet. There are concepts/skills/

TEKS that are still being taught right up to the last day of school! Benchmark assessments provide a

glimpse of what students know so teachers are able to adjust instruction accordingly to ensure

student mastery. We tell our kiddos, quote: “All we can ask of you is to do your VERY best.” We ask

our students to truly try and to work hard. We encourage our students to show text evidence, prove

answers, work out problems, use certain strategies that work for them, etc. in order to “think out”

their thought process and /or to check their work. We also inform our hard working students that we

look at EVERY SINGLE student’s test results and analyze all data to ensure student success for

ALL students.

Although this is just “practice” we want all students to give it their all and do their very best. The next

time we shut down and test will be for the REAL DEAL!! So with that being said, we ask that you

please make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before and that he/she has a good break-

fast in the morning. Your child’s attendance on benchmarking days are very important so we advise

you to reschedule any doctor or dentist appointments to a later date. It is also crucial that your child

arrives at school on time so that they can get to their testing location as quickly as possible and

begin testing on time.

The “Finer” Things

Our most outstanding and very talented UIL One Act Play students performed Peter/Wendy on Saturday, December

14th in Van. The entire company worked so hard and accomplished so much!!!! Mrs. Morales can’t say enough about how PROUD she is! I even received an email from

Van’s Contest Manager stating, “The rapport between teacher and student epitomized love, truth, discipline, and respect.” “The production was amazing bringing to life the Peter Pan

that is in all of us. These young students were true storytell-ers in every sense of the word .” “There was not an audience member who did not enter the fantasy of their story, and that is because those actors were disciplined and trained in the art

of storytelling.” What a compliment!! OUTSTANDING JOB!

Let’s all help in congratulating them for a job MORE THAN WELL DONE!!!!!
