New Year Celebrations In Kalyna Care

On the 2nd of January , residents at Kalyna Care came together to celebrate the New Year. A family member kindly volunteered his time to entertain us with his piano harmonica and sing some New Year and Christmas songs and made our residents day special.

Hey Dee Ho Music Session

On Monday 16th of December Hey Dee Ho Intergenerational Music Session was held at Kalyna Care. The atmosphere was full of love and happiness.

Sunday Activities As you are aware Kalyna Care added additional Leisure and Lifestyle shifts to trial Sunday activities for several Sundays as per resident survey. Unfortunately the participation rate for Sunday activities was low and so, we will discontinue weekly Sunday Leisure and Lifestyle activities (except for Church services which is regarded as an intrinsic part of our facility). However we plan to organise some Sunday events or outings from time to time.

We would like to say thank you to Father Marcos Yassa from St George Coptic Orthodox Church for coming to Kalyna Care with kids. Our residents had a good time enjoying the Christmas carols and lovely gifts from the kids.

Sviata Vecheria

Residents, Families and VIP guests celebrated Sviata Vecheria on Monday 6th January with a special Ukrainian Catholic Mass in the Hall. Halja Bryndzia ( Board Chair )and Pearl Forrester (Kalyna Care CEO)

shared the celebration with residents. We wish to thank the Bisilian sisters for providing the Kolach and Kutcha and our chef for the special Ukrainian Christmas meal.

CEO Update

Happy New Year and may the new decade bring to all, peace and good tidings. The start of 2020 brought heartache for many Australians with the unprecedented size of bushfires scorching millions of hectares and many homes, and resulting in loss of life. We all pray for better weather conditions to help our brave firefighters. Our staff collectively donated much needed funds which will be sent to a nominated charity. Our residents are also helping by knitting pouches for the many injured wildlife. A small but heartfelt gesture by all .

Capital Projects update Both builders, Harris HMC and Reliance Construction, are back

from holidays and it is all systems go. Following preliminary works

in the front car park just before Christmas, there were some safety

concerns identified resulting in a potential delay in the building of

the extension. However Harris HMC and Kalyna Care are working

hard to identify a solution to bring it back to schedule.

We welcome the opening of the hair and beauty salon, premium rooms and Konvalyia dining room, just in time for Christmas. The Significant Refurbishment project progresses with Stage 4 being handed to the builders who will deliver 5 to 8 refurbished rooms including a new Leisure and Lifestyle room leading into a courtyard and Physio room by end February, before moving on to the next stage. The Major Extension project will be running a few concurrent construction activities between January and March. This will include the construction of the new commercial laundry, completion of the new communications room and front foyer, and progressing with the two-storey Sosna and Topolya extension.

Car Parking is the biggest bug-bear and

unfortunately there is no way to improve on this for a few months. We have asked staff to park in the new staff car park from Frost Drive and to leave the front eastern grass verge area on Taylors Road for fami-lies and visitors. We have allocated GP and Disability Parking car spaces on the grassed area. We apologise for the inconvenience as we work to upgrade and increase capacity at Kalyna Care. Communication about the capital projects: As advised in the previous newsletters, Kalyna Care has put up a main notice board in the front foyer to provide all families/visitors and residents updates of the 2 capital projects. We also provide updates about the projects at Resident and Representatives meetings, and of course via the monthly newsletter. Please take time to read the main notice board to get the latest update.

Staff movements Kalyna Care recognises that all staff need some rest and is responsible to ensure that staff do not work continuously without a break. For many years, Kalyna Care has allowed staff to accrue their annual leave and not managed the leave liability very well. This sits as a liability in our accounts and it is good business practice to reduce the liability. We have many long tenured staff with many weeks and months of annual leave accrued and have started to encourage staff to take leave. In addition, we have quite a number of staff going on maternity and paternity leave in 2020! With our staff going on leave, we have to appoint new staff to cover their shifts. That is why you will see or have seen a few new faces. This also gives Kalyna Care the opportunity to work with new staff with fresh ideas and to prepare for when the facility increases its capacity to over 140 beds by the end of 2020. We have the founding members to thank for their foresight to take Kalyna Care to where it is today.

Security Due to security concerns, the backdoor nearest to the laundry will no longer use the much-known code on the key pad to gain entry. Instead visitors or families parked in the back (Frost Drive) car park need to press the call-bell button and staff will open the back door for you. We appreciate your cooperation to help us

keep our residents safe.
