THE COMMUNITY CHURCH OF VERO BEACH “Founded in 1924 in the belief that there is more that binds us

together than separates us in the worship of God.”

A FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS DECEMBER 24, 2018

SANCTUARY SERVICE 7:00 AND 9:00 PM

WELCOME

Recognizing the wide welcome offered to all through Jesus Christ, Community Church opens its arms to all. We strive to offer Christ’s wide welcome to all people, regardless of creed, age, race, or sexual identity.

We invite you to join our congregation in worship and in membership, as we allow our lives to be shaped by the loving outreach of Christ.

This service recounts the historic prophecy and birth of Christ in the words of Holy Scripture and in songs of devotion and praise.

*Those who are able please stand. Bold text indicates congregational participation. The Garden Room, off the Narthex, with closed circuit broadcast of the service, is available for

the use of parents with infants and young children, as needed. Nursery care is available at the 7:00 p.m. service for children, birth to age 3, on the 2nd floor in the education building.

Our services are live-streamed via internet, capturing the chancel & the congregation.

PRELUDE “Distant Echoes: A Christmas Prelude” Orchestra

Kentaro Sato CAROL AND PROCESSION OF THE CHRIST LIGHT “Once in Royal David’s City” Soprano Soloist and Chancel Choir

arr. Jeffrey Van

Solo: Once in a royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed,

Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed. Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Choir: He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all,

And his shelter was a stable, And his cradle was a stall. With the poor and oppressed, and lowly, Lived on earth our Savior holy.

*Congregation: Jesus is our childhood’s pattern, Day by day like us He grew; (Please stand) He was little, weak and helpless, Tears and smiles like us He knew;

And He feels for all our sadness, And He shares in all our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see him, Through his own redeeming love, For that child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heaven above; And he leads His children on To the place where he is gone.

Amen. CHRISTMAS WELCOME Senior Minister

*CAROL “O Come, All Ye Faithful” Congregation, Chancel Choir, & Orchestra arr. David Willcocks

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!

Come, and behold Him, born the King of angels!

Refrain: O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!

Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation! Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!

Glory to God, all Glory in the highest! [Refrain]

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to Thee be all glory given;

Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing! [Refrain]

LESSON I “Christ’s birth and kingdom foretold.” Minister of Mission and Education

Isaiah 9:2, 6-7

ANTHEM “For Unto Us A Child Is Born” Chancel Choir and Orchestra

George Fredrick Handel

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given,

and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor,

the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father,

the Prince of Peace.

LESSON II “The glory of Bethlehem foretold.” Deacon

Micah 5:2-4 *CAROL “O Little Town of Bethlehem” Congregation and Chancel Choir

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, and peace to all on earth.

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel!

LESSON III “The angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary.” Deacon

Luke 1:26-35

ANTHEM “Mary’s Magnificat” Chancel Choir

Andrew Carter

Softly a light is stealing, Sweetly a maiden sings, Ever wakeful, ever wistful, Watching faithfully,

thankfully, tenderly her King of kings. My soul doth magnify, doth magnify the Lord:

And my spirit hath rejoiced, Rejoiced in God my Savior. Mary her song to Jesus Softly, serenely sings:

“I will love you, I will serve you, May my lullaby glorify, Magnify my King of kings.”

Lullaby. Lullaby. LESSON IV “Luke tells of the birth of Jesus.” (7:00 p.m.)Ministry Associate for Luke 2:1-7 Spiritual Formation (9:00 p.m.)Interim Pastoral Care Minister ANTHEM “Cradle Song” Tenor Soloist and Harp

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed,

The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,

The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.

I love You, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle, till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask You to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children in Your tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with You there.

LESSON V “The shepherds go to the manger.” Minister of Mission and Education

Luke 2:8-14

*CAROL “The First Nowell” Congregation and Chancel Choir

The first nowell the angel did say, was to certain poor shepherds, in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep.

Refrain: Nowell, nowell, nowell, nowell, born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continues both day and night. [Refrain]

Then let us all, with one accord, sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of naught, and with His love man-kind hath bought. [Refrain]

CHRISTMAS HOMILY “Our Turn to Sing” Executive Minister

LESSON VI “The wise ones are led by the star to Jesus.” Deacon Matthew 2:1-2, 8-11

*CAROL “Three Kings of Orient” Congregation, Chancel Choir, & Orchestra

arr. John Rutter

We three kings of Orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar. Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.

Refrain: O star of wonder, star of night, star of royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a king on Bethlehem's plain, gold I bring to crown Him again, King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. [Refrain]

Frankincense to offer have I. Incense owns a deity nigh. Prayer and praising all men raising, worship Him, God on high. [Refrain]

Myrrh is mine. Its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom. Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone-cold tomb. [Refrain]

Glorious now behold Him arise, King and God and Sacrifice. Alleluia, alleluia! Earth to heav'n replies. [Refrain]

OFFERING Minister of Missions & Education

All of tonight’s offering will be given locally to support over twenty five agencies in

Indian River County, working to care for those in need.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “O Holy Night” Soprano, Chancel Choir, & Orchestra arr. David T. Clydesdale

O holy night!

The stars are brightly shining; it is the night of the dear Savior’s birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!

Refrain: Fall on your knees! O hear the angel voices!

O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine,

O night, O night divine!

Truly He taught us to love one another; and his gospel is peace. Bonds shall we make, until we all are brothers, and His name all oppression shall cease.

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we; let all within us praise His holy name. [Refrain]

O night divine, O night divine,

Divine!

LESSON VII “John unfolds the great mystery of the incarnation.” Senior Minister

John 1:1-14 THE PASSING OF THE CHRIST LIGHT

The lighted Christ Candle will be brought to the center of the Church. Its light will be passed from person to person, in every pew, until the Light of the World has been spread among us, and all the candles are lighted.

Please...Tilt only unlit candles to prevent dripping hot wax.

ANTHEM/CAROL (seated) “Night of Silence/Silent Night” Chancel Choir and Orchestra

arr. John Ferguson

Cold are the people, winter of life, we tremble in shadows this cold endless night, Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, flowers that will echo the sunrise, Fire of hope is our only warmth, weary, its flame will be dying soon.

Voice in the distance, call in the night, on wind you enfold us, you speak of the light, Gentle on the ear you whisper softly, rumors of a dawn so embracing,

Breathless love awaits darkened souls, soon will we know of the morning.

Congregation please join the choir at the clergy’s invitation.

“Silent Night” (seated) Congregation and Choirs

Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon Virgin Mother and Child. Holy Infant, so tender and mild,

Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing: "Alleluia;

Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born."

Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love's pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

Please hold your candles aloft.

Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light; With the angels let us sing, alleluia to our King;

Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

CHRISTMAS PRAYER AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (debts) Senior Minister

*CAROL “Joy to the World” Congregation, Chancel Choir, & Orchestra

arr. John Rutter

Please extinguish candles.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come: let earth receive her King; Let every heart, prepare him room, and heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

He rules the world, with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove; The glories of His righteousness, and wonders of His love,

And wonders of His love, and wonders, wonders of His love.
