“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” — Edith Sitwell

Everyone gravitates to home. That special place where we feel accepted and appreciated, where even the most commonplace experiences bring us joy.

Home is not just where we live. It is a feeling that can be found whenever we leave our residence to pursue those things that bring meaning to our lives. We are delighted that so many of you view the center as home, based on your comments during our recent strategic planning process. One member even wrote on our Thanksgiving pumpkin that the center was, “a place for me to be me”, one of the best definitions of home that comes to mind.

So, when the cold, dark days of winter leave you yearning for the comforts of home, just click your heals together three times and come to the center. There’s no place like home.

STRATEGIC PLANNING

The past two years have been a transition period for the Enrichment Center- a time for letting the dust settle after opening and then creating something of value for our community. We thank each of you for the role you played in that process.

However, now is the time to look ahead. As Alan Lakein said, “Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now.”

Graduate students from the Wright State University Master of Public Administration program conducted a Strategic Plan for the center this past fall. A focus group was held and 146 members responded to a self-administered questionnaire about their satisfaction with current services and their suggestions for improvements.

The Executive Summary concluded that, “The data revealed a high level of appreciation for the hard-working staff and opportunities offered by the Enrichment Center. There were some requests and concerns by the members, ranging from the temperature of the facility to accessibility of the restrooms to requests for additional classes and opportunities. Some requests could be addressed in the short-term, while others will take additional time, planning and finances to address.” Other findings of note included requests for expanded hours, more coordinated communication efforts, increased opportunities to give input, and a solution to sound issues in the facility. Numerous suggestions for new programming were also provided.

Each comment we received from you is invaluable and will help us prioritize and move ahead with projects and programs that make our great center even better…well into the future. Thank you!

Filing your return does not have to be a taxing chore, thanks to AARP. IRS-certified volunteers are available in the Rec West Game Room from February 1 through the filing deadline to help you prepare and e-file your 2017 return. AARP volunteers, led by Charlie Roup, donated over 900 hours of service and filed over 1000 returns at the center last year.

The service is free, with no age restriction, although it is designed for those age 50 and older. Appointments fill quickly and can be made by calling the Enrichment Center at 433-0130 beginning January 2. Online appointments are not available.

Items to bring to your appointment include last year’s tax return, 2017 tax statements and receipts, social security card or other official documentation for yourself and every individual on your return, photo I.D., and your checkbook to direct deposit a refund or to make a payment.

On Friday, April 6, from 10 am to 2 pm, drivers age 50 and older can refresh their safe driving skills and learn new strategies to stay secure and confident behind the wheel. The 4-hour course presents strategies that can reduce the likelihood of a crash, including adapting to changes in ourselves, roads, and the vehicles we drive.

Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Class is limited to 20 participants. Pre-registration is required and begins February 5. Each participant receives a certificate of completion, which may result in discounted vehicle insurance rates. Check with your insurance company.

Mind Games It’s just as important to keep your brain synapses firing as it is to keep your joints lubricated and muscles limber. The good news is that playing mind games can be a lot more fun than sweating in the gym. Even better, there is no shortage of fun and games at the Enrichment Center to keep your mind nimble.

The Public Health Department conducts both screenings every other month on the 2nd Wednesday at 9:15 AM. The next visit is on February 14th.

St. Leonard also conducts screening on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, while retired nurse, Berneta Daley, checks blood pressure on the 2nd & 4th Thursday. Both are at the center at 9:30 AM.

Weather or NotThe last couple of winters have been pretty mild. If this winter should be different, the Washington Township Rec Center, including the Enrichment Center, will likely remain open unless there is a significant snow or ice event. In those cases, stay tuned to your local television and radio stations, or go online to www.washingtontwp.org/rec to see if the WTRC is delayed or closed. If it is, so is the Enrichment Center. If you are an instructor or coordinator of an activity and are not comfortable coming in because of weather but the center is open, please notify the front desk.

For the Health of It

A healthy habit is to have your blood pressure and blood sugar checked on a regular basis.

There’s No Place Like Home
