Letter from the President

Dear Neighbors,

2016 was an active year and the WRVNA is looking forward to continuing its efforts to im-

proving the neighborhood by focusing on three pillars: Community, Beautification, and Secu-

rity.

Over the last several years, we have worked to improve communication, build financial secu-

rity, and improve the overall aesthetics of our neighborhood. We launched a Facebook page

and an email distribution system that allows us to reach out to neighbors in real time. Our

Facebook page has more than 1,200 members and we are able to email more than 1,000 resi-

Last year, we continued to build on our financial security with a record

of more than $75,000 in cash collections. We have planted approxi-

mately 100 new trees throughout the neighborhood, power-washed

and painted our exterior walls, and launched a new logo and brand

strategy. This year we are planning to execute an even larger project

by redesigning the neighborhood entryway on the corner of Walnut

Hill and White Rock Trail and now we have a team to help us do it.

This year we will have a Beautification and Special Projects Commit-

tee that will be focused on this project along with other improvement

projects throughout the neighborhood. The committee will be chaired

by Dan Houchard, a landscape architect living in the neighborhood,

who will be joined on the committee by Kristen Fegale, owner of her

own interior design company, and Adam Chabira, COO of a physicians

group. I’m excited to welcome all three to the board this year. Contin-

ued on page 2.

Continued from page 1… In 2017, we are welcoming nine new board members; you can see all of

their bios beginning on page three of this newsletter. Effective for 2017 we also adjusted the

structure of the board to allow for broader participation. The new structure will ultimately in-

clude four officers, five committee chairs, and 11 committee representatives. This allows us to

engage additional residents in the neighborhood without requiring each of the committee mem-

bers to be present at all board meetings. Attendance at board meetings is required for the offic-

ers and chairpersons but is optional for committee representatives because they can communi-

cate through their committee chair. We still have three positions open on the board: secretary

(officer), social (chair), and newsletter (representative). You can review the job descriptions for

these roles on pages three through five of the newsletter.

In 2016, we also held our second annual WRV Jingle Ride (see page 6 for details) as well as an-

other successful National Night Out where we had more than 800 residents in attendance. We

also supported a neighborhood flag project to show support for our fallen officers.

In 2017, we want to continue our efforts to improve our neighborhood and we need your help to

do so. The easiest ways to help are to: Join the neighborhood association (see application below

or join on our website at www.wrvna.org ), volunteer for the WRVNA Board and /or join our Vol-

unteers in Patrol (VIP) program (see page 8).

If you have any questions or are interested in joining the WRVNA Board, please reach out to me

Second Annual WRV Jingle Ride

In 2016, we executed another successful WRV Jingle Ride. On December 17, in frigid condi-

tions, neighbors lined the streets to donate gifts to less-fortunate families of Lake Highlands.

In total we collected almost 1,000 gifts that were donated to 103 families. The families got to

shop from the donations and gift wrap was provided while children played in the gym and en-

joyed refreshments. We had numerous volunteers unloading and organizing gifts, entertaining

children, and wrapping gifts. This year, the families were able to choose two gifts per child,

one “family” gift (such as a board game), one book per child, and one stocking stuffing per child.

A special thanks to Courtnye and Isaac Lynch for their vision and leadership for this special

event. Additional thanks to Dan and Jennifer Jackson, Anna Woods, Susan Abrahamson, Brett

and Jill Creel, Mark Gray, John Rudebeck, Travis Durham, Ray Cumpton, Delene Ephraim,

Sherry Sefko, Kelly Musgrave, Erika Stilwell, “Cowboy” Gary, “Buddy”, and all of the other vol-

unteers that helped make this a success. Thank you for your commitment to the event and to

helping out those less fortunate.

VIP (Volunteers in Patrol) is the community crime watch program composed of your neighbors who

patrol the area on the lookout for suspicious activity. We are trained by the Dallas police, patrol in

pairs in our own vehicles, and call 911 if action is warranted. Patrols are strictly non-confrontational.

Presently we are conducting around 10 patrols per month out of a possible 90 (3/day times 30 days).

While many of us have very busy schedules, it only takes two hours per month to drive a patrol. Police

crime statistics show a very positive correlation between the number of patrols and reduced crime.

Top 10 Reasons to Join the WRVNA VIP:

1. Help prevent crime in your area by the presence of patrols

2. Keep your property values high

3. Help keep your friends, neighbors and family safe

4. Get ideas for your alley and back yard from others

5. Meet other VIP participants from your neighborhood

6. Chance to nominate candidates for "yard of the month"

7. Get four hours of free training by the Dallas police

8. Ride in the comfort of your own vehicle with a partner VIP

9. It only takes two hours per month at a time of your choosing

10. It will not add to the federal debt
