FFFFROMROMROMROMOUROUROUROUR PPPPASTORASTORASTORASTORThe Gospel today gives us the beginning of the most distinctive section of SaintMatthews Gospel, the Sermon on the Mount. It takes up three chapters (5-7) andis a masterpiece of religious and ethical teaching. Matthew shows Jesus as a newMoses, preaching from a mountain and bringing to his people the Beatitudes, which

are the New Testament parallel of the Ten Commandments. This year we hear this Gospel reading of Year A at the start of Catholic SchoolsCatholic SchoolsCatholic SchoolsCatholic SchoolsWeek,Week,Week,Week, the annual celebration of the importance of Catholic Schools in the life ofthe Church. The first Catholic Schools WeekCatholic Schools WeekCatholic Schools WeekCatholic Schools Week, held in 1974, had the themeCatholic Schools, Different Where It Counts--Message, Community and Service. We have a different message because teaching the faith is a priority, just as it wasfor Jesus. Our schools have a different feel because they are communities centeredon Christ, as we see when the students and faculty of Saint Charles gather eachweek for the school Mass. We are different, too, in our emphasis on service, although it is good to see that in the past 38 years the public schools have donemuch more to encourage service to the needy of the local community. Above all,Catholic schools stand for the education of the whole child: physical, intellectual,

social and spiritual. The logo designed for Catholic SchoolsWeek 2011 displays the words CatholicSchools: A+ for America beneath astylized banner of stars and stripes in redand blue. The theme celebrates the factthat Catholic schools provide added value(a plus) for the nation. Because of theirtraditionally high academic standards andhigh graduation rates, all supported bystrong moral values, Catholic schools andtheir graduates make a positive contribution to American society. Catholic schools

give a high level of service to their local communities because of the many serviceprojects students undertake; giving back to the community and helping othersare values instilled in every Catholic school student. In addition, Catholic schoolsgive a high level of service to the nation by educating students from all economicbackgrounds and giving them the strong academic and moral foundation whichallows them to succeed in life, serving in the government, armed forces, industry, business, non-profit and educational fields.

Saint Charles Borromeo church is unique in the Diocese because it is at the heart oa campus which encompasses three Catholic Schools: Bishop Moore Catholic HighSchool, Saint Charles pre-K to 8, and Morning Star School. For fifty-six yearsCatholic education has been a priority in this place and we should be proud of thestudents who have gone on to make a difference to the world of Orlando andbeyond. Pray for our current students and the teachers who guide them; encouragethe next generation to come to our schools and benefit from their excellence; and -if you are a grandparent, other relative or friend of a Catholic family - see if youcould help them with the financial burden of giving their children the besteducation possible.
