A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE" by Bud Ozar

In today’s Gospel Jesus was “praised by all” except at home in Nazareth where the “eyes of all were intently upon Him.” Acceptance can be hard to find at home due to unreal EXPECTATIONS. Jesus challenges us to “proclaim liberty” to anyone “oppressed” or “captive” by our EXPECTATIONS.

Young Adult Ministry

Living out our Catholic faith can be challenging and can be especially difficult as a young adult trying to develop a career, raise a family, or simply grow closer to God. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish is starting a Young Adult Ministry for people ages 18-39 to get to-gether, form a community, and rediscover the beauty of the Mass. We are looking to form a committee of young adults who would be interested and willing to invest time in this new ministry. If this is something that you feel passionate about, contact Gabe Chabot ([email protected]). The first meeting will be planned once responses come in and a group can be established.

Please join us for Coffee & Donuts & Fellowship every Sunday after the 8:00 AM Mass in the Church Hall.

We are grateful to our Hosts: Mary and Michael Guidone,

Dina and Lily Lemieux, Laurie and John Mital,

Angela and James Piscatelli

Each week they share the responsibility to coordinate, setup and clean. Their hospitality is appreciated by all who enjoy

this warm and welcoming time together.

Liturgical Notes for the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we hear in the First Reading as well as the Holy Gospel that “the law” as well as the proclamation of “good news” was read or declared from the reading of a scroll.

The origin of a scroll has it’s roots from Africa. Scroll’s were the first form of record keeping texts used in Eastern Mediterra-nean ancient Egyptian civilization.

Scrolls, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, were written on parch-ment, made from processed animal hide known as vellum. Oth-er materials used to make them were papyrus and bronze.

In the Old Testament Reading were hear that the “Law” (God’s word) was read to the assembly. Hence, our Responsorial Psalm today reinforces that message calling out that the Lord’s Words are “spirit and life” and that the “law of the Lord is per-fect”. The anthem sung during the Presentation of the Gifts is a text taken from the Gospel passage which was read from the scroll after it was unrolled, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, he has anointed me.” Our Processional and Recessional Hymn’s bring forth the theme in the Gospel about “healing our infirmities” (giving sight to the blind) as well as “The Spirit sends us forth to serve”, and “help the blind to see”. All theses phrases are from the Gospel of Luke we hear today. Our Second Reading reminds us that we are all “One Body in Christ” and our Communion Hymn reflects just that message. ~ Written by: Raymond Murphy, Choir Director

Holy Happy Hour

Please join us THIS Monday, January 28th

as we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Thomas Aquinas. We will be raising a toast to this

influential saint with an adult beverage inspired by him. As we sip, we will discuss his background and explore some of his most well-known teachings. We are blessed as Catholics to have the saints as our spiritual friends and role models of holiness. We hope that you will come to learn more about St. Thomas and how his insight and wis-dom can help you in your own spiritual journey. We will be meeting at 7:00 PM in the Church Hall Meeting Room. Please call the office to register. Looking forward to see-ing you there!

Catholic Poetry

It is our hope that through this lively and engaging series of discussions, conversations and sharing about Catholic poetry each person will come away with a new under-standing of the topic and how it can relate to their personal faith journey. We will read, discuss, journal, hear and watch Catholic poetry in all of its forms. Sessions will run for approximately one hour, from 7PM to 8PM Tuesday evenings from February 12th to April 30th (the end of poetry month.) Leave all your preconceptions about poetry in general at the door and do be prepared to enjoy and learn. All materials will be provided. You only need to bring an open heart, an open ear and a willingness to share what it is YOU hear. Please call the office for more infor-mation and to register.
