Building Project
The public vote for the building project was held
on December 15th. The results were 92-Yes and
12-No.
I would like to thank the public for their support.
As outlined in the last few Jottings, this project
will fix the leaks in the roof, replace the old
boilers, repair our sidewalks, and bring new
security features to the building. The vote is
only the beginning of the process. Before the
community actually sees “hammer and nails,”
the following steps need to occur; the architects
and engineers will draw up plans and fill out
paperwork required by the NYS Education
Department for approval. When approved, the
project will go out to bid to get the best price for
the work.
Once the initial requirements are met, we will
create a schedule for the work to begin, keeping
in mind that we would like it to be done with the
least amount of disruption to our students.
Schools generally like to have work done during
the summer. Due to the timeline and the fact
that all schools want to have their projects done
during the two summer months, it is not always
possible.
I will be sharing more information with you as
we go through each of the steps to make sure
everyone knows how things are proceeding.
Even though I would like to have this project
done this summer, we may not be able to start
until the summer of 2018.

National Jr. & Sr. Honor
Society
Members of the Johnsburg Central School’s
Gore Mountain Chapter of the National Jr.
& Sr. Honor Societies joined the Salvation
Army’s Red Kettle Campaign this season.
On November 19th
students rang the bell
outside the food court at Aviation Mall and
on December 3rd
they could be found at the
Quaker Road Walmart. This is a traditional
service activity for the National Honor
Society groups at JCS and they enjoy
greeting and serenading shoppers with
seasonal songs in the spirit of helping to
raise money for the Salvation Army.
Hugh O’Brian Youth
Foundation
Sophomore, Ava Anderson, daughter of
Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Stone, will attend
the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership
Program this spring, June 2-4, 2017, at
SUNY Oneonta. This weekend seminar
encourages students to be the best they
can be. Business leaders and
governmental officials show over 200
sophomores from New York State high
schools “how to think” can be just as
important as “what to think.” Through
small group discussions, students come to
a better understanding of leadership and
how important volunteering is. In
addition, students learn how to make their
community and school a better place.

5/6 Science Classes Complete Engineering
Project:
. . . Students in Mrs. Fink’s Science 5/6
classes recently completed an engineering
project that integrated building models,
wiring electrical circuits, and computer
coding. Students were challenged with the
task of creating a script to “teach” the
computer (in this case their Chromebooks)
how to play music. Next, they designed a
model of an instrument and wired it to a
circuit board called a Makey Makey, which
plugs in to the Chromebook. The
culmination of the project was to present the
instrument to the class and perform a
musical piece. Students then embedded the
digital project and performance video into a
Google Slides portfolio to share. Throughout
the process the students enjoyed learning
how to “think, make, and improve” as an
engineer.

“JCS Cares and Thanks You”
This holiday season students and teachers in grades PreK-6 wanted to take the time to thank their
local police departments, fire departments, and the Johnsburg EMS. Instead of classroom gift
exchanges or teacher gifts, students donated items to create goodie baskets filled with a variety
of “on the go” treats as a small token of gratitude to thank them for all their hard work,
dedication, and everything they do for our communities.
The following were Representing:
Warren County Sheriff’s Department – Sargent Robert Smith
New York State Police – Trooper Allen Hughes
North Creek Fire Department – Kathy Dubay, Caleb Buck, and Logan McKinney
Garnet Lake Fire Department – Jean Comstock
Standing in were several JCS students.
Baskets were also delivered to the North River, Riverside, Bakers Mills, and Johnsburg Fire
Departments, and the Johnsburg EMS.

On Friday, December 2, the JCS Pop Singers took a field trip to perform for members of the
senior community at both the Adirondack
Tri-County Nursing Home in North
Creek, as well as the residents at the
Warren Center in Queensbury. They
wore their best ugly Christmas sweaters
and caroled for the residents. They also
did a flash mob in the Queensbury Pizza
Hut, treating the patrons to an A Capella
song by Pentatonic. The group had a
great time and really enjoyed spreading
Holiday cheer!

PTSA
We would like to thank everyone for your support with the Holiday Book Fair! We were able to
support the PARP Program and help the school library with the funds that were raised.
Winter sports are here! We encourage everyone to get out and show support by attending a few
games this season. The Music Department will be having their concession stand open. (I
personally love the convenience of having a quick bite to eat when schedules are so hectic). The
Beautification Club will also have items to show our school spirit.
Jan 20th
Family Movie Night the Featured Movie will be Finding Dory!
Now that the winter season is upon us, the PTSA would like to share some winter safety tips to
all who like to spend time in the snow and on the ice.
Cold Weather Safety Tips:
When it comes to staying comfortable in the great outdoors, layering is one of the
best methods for adapting quickly to changing weather conditions. If you’re new
to activities like hiking, backpacking, skiing, ice fishing, and snowshoeing,
knowing how to layer properly will help you avoid being too hot or too cold.
Be sure your kids are clad in bright colors and/or reflective material before they
head out in the snow. This helps motorists, snow plows, and snowmobilers, see
your child while playing out in the snow.
Wear sunscreen! Snow reflects 80 percent of UV rays. When those rays hit
exposed, unprotected skin, they can cause a bad burn. Worsening matters, UV
radiation exposure increases along with altitudes, making sunblock even more of
a must for pint-sized skiers and snowboarders.
According to a study in Pediatrics magazine, more than 20,000 youngsters under
the age of 19 wind up in the ER every year with sledding-related injuries, most
often to the head. So be sure to make sure the area is open and free of cars, trees,
posts, and rocks. Pick an off-peak time when child missiles aren't zooming
everywhere, and go only when it's light outside. To avoid injury, allow only one
child per sled, and avoid snow tubes, which can make it harder for others to see
your speed demon (and are harder to stop or hop off without injury).
Kids love seeing their breath in the air, but for asthmatics, simply taking a breath
in subzero temps can be challenging. That's because cold, dry air is a risk factor
for asthmatics, more likely to provoke the condition than warm, moist air. "Just as
the cold dries and chaps your hands, it can also be drying to the lungs, causing
tightening of the bronchial muscles," says Amy Burack, R.N., community asthma
programs manager for Children's Hospital Boston.
Snowmobile safety is a great concern. If you are interested in being well prepared
for your next outing please check out this link
http://nysparks.com/recreation/snowmobiles/documents/SnowmobilersGuide.pdf
Is the Ice thick enough?
Safe ice is the number one consideration. A minimum of three to four inches of solid ice
is the general rule for safety. Ice thickness, however, is not uniform on any body of
water. This is based on new, clear ice on non-running waters.
Ice Thickness Permissible Load
2 inches or less STAY OFF!
4 inches Ice Fishing and other activities
on foot
5 inches Snowmobile or ATV
8-12 inches Car or small pickup
12-15 inches Medium Truck
Slush ice is about 50 percent weaker.
Clear, ice over running water is about 20 percent weaker.
Use common sense! Be cautious in areas where "bubblers" are used to protect
docks. They can produce thin, unsafe ice some distance away.
Be especially alert in areas near shore, over moving bodies of water and on lakes
and ponds where streams enter or exit. Remember, just like swimming use the
buddy system while out on the ice of lakes and ponds - it saves lives.

Parents: All kids entering 7
th and 12

must have the meningococcal vaccine.
About the Vaccine:
• It’s not a new vaccine. It’s been recommended for a decade.
• Most parents already choose to vaccinate their children.
• What’s new is that the vaccine will be required for
school entry as of Sept. 1, 2016.
About Meningococcal Disease:
• It causes bacterial meningitis and other serious diseases.
• Teens and young adults are at greater risk.
• It comes on quickly and without warning.
• Its symptoms are similar to the flu.
• Every case of this disease can result in
death or long-term disability.
Check with your doctor. Even kids who have had a shot
before may need a booster to start school.
