My Experience at the Junior National Young Leaders Conference By: Cassie Dunbar – 7th Grade

I began the day Sunday, July 10, 2016 with excitement and nervousness. That was the day I left my family and not to see a familiar face for 6 days. I met with leaders from all 50 states in Washington D.C. Over 500 young leaders attended this Conference, and there among all of them, I am from little North Creek. As I arrived at Baltimore airport, I was efficiently taken to the Leadership Conference headquarters. There we were separated into 15-member focus groups. All the groups were named after presidents, mine being the Washington group. For the rest of that day, we focused on getting to know the campus and what our daily routine would be. The next day was focused on Voices of Freedom. We began our day taking selfies in front of the White House. We explored the National Museum of American History. There we read about how our country became the nation it is now. After we explored the museum, we visited the Lincoln Memorial (my favorite), the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Shockingly, one of the boys in my grade found his grandfather’s name on the wall. Then to end the day my group had a peace patch protest. A peace patch protest is when students wear patches with peace signs to show they are against violent behavior.

The third day of my trip was full of history. We spent the whole day at Harpers Ferry. That morning we followed the footsteps of John Brown. He was a very brave leader. After we ate lunch, we trained to become soldiers. We learned how to march, using many different gun stances. Surprisingly, the work was pretty hard! To end our day, we talked about our adventures at Harpers Ferry and discussed what we had learned. The fourth day of my trip started with me waking up at 4:30 a.m. to go visit the U.S. Capitol! We got to listen and watch a meeting with the Senators. We were able to take a tour of the Capitol which was amazing! The rest of the day we were assigned jobs that people in the Capitol have, including the President. We acted as if there was a gas leak and how we would fix it. Depending on the problem, the jobs in the Senate can become very stressful. The fifth day was the day I was looking forward to on the whole trip. I finally got to listen to Anthony Robles speech. Anthony Robles was born with one leg, but won the National Wrestling Championship. He talked about the challenges he faced at school and at home. He told us that every day he says to himself “Be Unstoppable” and told us as leaders to be unstoppable and to never give up. After that we set off to the Hard Rock Cafe and the Maryland Science Museum. The Hard Rock Cafe was full of signed guitars and fancy costumes. Then we spent the night at the Maryland Science Museum. There we celebrated all we had learned and experienced. Character, Communication, Goal Setting, Problem Solving, Respect, Teamwork, are all the traits I’ve studied and worked towards to become a strong leader. This experience has opened my eyes to a diverse group of friendships, and a bigger picture of the world. I appreciate the generous support of the many teachers, family members, and friends for this life changing opportunity. “Alone we can do so little; together we can to so much.” stated by Helen Keller.

Christmas Tree Safety

Make sure your tree is not too dry. Water your tree daily. Dry trees are perfect for catching fire! Rule of thumb: Real trees need one quart of water for every inch of trunk diameter. If you have an artificial tree, be sure it is flame retardant. Trees should be no closer (best if further) than 3 feet from candles, fireplaces, space heaters, radiators, heat vents, and other heat sources.
