Dear Fine Arts Educators, Happy new year! I hope that everyone had a tremendous Christmas break and is re-energized for the second semester! As the semester progresses, remember that I am here to help you, and am always excited to visit your schools to see your programs, projects and students. I am happy to

work with you and your curriculums, and help you develop programs and projects for the remainder of this school year or for the next. Please let me know how I can help you! The Archdiocese music festivals (elementary, secondary band, choir, jazz band, and song festival) will be held in February and March. The Archdiocese mall art exhibits will also be on display at area malls during Catholic Schools Week and into February. If you are a new teacher, or have not participated in these events for a while I encourage you to come to the festivals or go look at the art work so you know what they are and possibly partici-pate in them with your students next year. I know if I see how an event runs I feel much more comfortable partici-pating. They are great opportunities for your students, so please come to the festivals to see how they run and can help your students. The NCEA convention is quickly approaching! We need more students and teachers to sing in the choirs for the convention Masses April 18, 19 and 20th. We will have over 7,000 educators from around the world in attend-ance so we need to show them how strong our music programs are in St. Louis. April 18th is lead by elementary students grades 4-6, April 19th is lead by high school students, and April 20 is lead by teachers, not just music teachers, any teacher! If you or your students are interested contact me for all the details. I encourage you to participate and please encourage your students! Peace, Kenneth Lederle Director of Fine Arts 314.792.7324 [email protected]

4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair;

(“Living the Arts through Language + Learning: A Report on Community-based Youth Organizations,” Shirley Brice Health, Stanford University and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Americans for the Arts Monograph, November 1998)

Businesses understand that arts education:

Builds a school climate of high expectations, discipline, and academic rigor that attracts businesses

relocating to your community;

strengthens student problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adding to overall academic

achievement and school success;

helps students develop a sense of craftsmanship, quality task performance, and goal-setting– skills

needed to succeed in the classroom and beyond;

can help troubled youth, providing an alternative to destructive behavior and another way for students

to approach learning;

provides another opportunity for parental, community, and business involvement with schools,

including arts and humanities organizations;

helps all students develop more appreciation and understanding of the world around them;

helps students develop a positive work ethic and pride in a job well done.
