From the Baron and Baroness

Greetings Fair Bright Hills! Our apologies as we realize that this will be posting after some of the holiday season has passed, but our thoughts carry over into the New Year. As we reach the midwinter mark, we begin to think about family both by blood and by choice. There is much to rejoice and plenty of opportunity to do so. We look forward to celebrating the holidays and sharing the joys and accomplishments of all of you. Please let us know if you have observed a fellow Barony member that deserves both our recognition and their Majesties. His Excellency and I can see what is in front of us (and sometimes behind) but rarely what is transpiring around corners. We need the eyes and ears of the Barony to point us in the direction of deserving candidates that we may perhaps miss in the cacophony of activities, both in the forefront of events or behind the scenes that often appear so effortless to the naked eye. There are many upcoming events that we look forward to seeing you all these coming months: Baronial 12th Night January 2nd Friday Night Practice Location (as listed on our baronial web page) Kingdom 12 Night January 10th Sacred Stone (Greensboro NC) Ice Castles January 24th Black Diamond (Blacksburg, VA) Feast of St Brigid January 31st Lochmere (Severna Park, MD) Kingdom University February 7th Dun Carraig (St Mary’s City, MD) Baronial Birthday February 14th OUR BIRTHDAY!!! Tournament of Ymir February 27th Windmasters Hills (Reidsville, NC) So, whether you are celebrating Winter Solstice, Kwanza, Hanukkah, Bodhi, Pancha Ganapati, Chahar Shanbeh Suri or Christmas, we wish you a Happy Holiday Season with your family and friends. Safe travels to you all. Yours in Service to the Dream Kollack and Rebecca von Zweckel Baron and Baroness of Bright Hills

From the Chronicler Winter continues to bring a chill to the air, which has resulted in way too many people being sick. I think we all need a dose of chicken soup and ginger tea. I am gearing up for Baronial Birthday. January and February look to be busy months on the Calendar. I hope to see plenty of pictures. I would like to wish congratulations to Lord Janyn on being elevated to the Principal of the Order of the Golden Dolphin. This is wonderful news. Vivat!

A personal thank you to Lord Graham for providing me the officers’ meeting minutes, Lady Deirdre for her poetry article, Lord Randver for his story, Countess Rowan for her recipe, and Lady Amelia for her cover. Your contributions are invaluable. The newsletter is not possible without you. THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield Chronicler of the Barony Bright Hills

Officers of the Barony of Bright Hills

MINUTES

September 19, 2014, 7:10 P.M.

I. Attendees - Present were Graham Wright, Kenneth and Becky

Kepple, Hunter Fowler, Michelle England, Debbie Eccles, Jill Peters. Randy Feltman, and Robyn Becker.

II. Report of the Baronage – Royal Rabbit vineyards has asked us

back to their demo again. When the date is set we will know more. III. Officer Reports

A. Chronicler: THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield – I have updated the newsletter officer list to reflect the change in the knight marshal’s position and have updated the new location of PAGE.

The newsletter is full again this month. Lady Deirdre provided an article on Italian poetry, Lord Randver provided a story, Lady Amelia provided the cover and Countess Rowan for her ma’amoul recipe. I also included the various reports from Unevent. There are no pictures this month for the picture section due to lack of December events. I attended Unevent, even though the chroniclers’ meeting was cancelled. Mistress Mordryn was ill and could not make the trip. She plans to hold an online meeting sometime in January. I did attend the Public Relations meeting for Maestra Barbara. The rules for having the Press at events and official Demos are on the Society website. All press is required to have an escort. That person is either the Seneschal or his appointed representative. The public contact is officially the Seneschal, but he/she can appoint a representative contact such as the Chatelaine. Newspaper photographers do not need release forms to publish pictures or articles. Release forms only cover you within the SCA. Press releases about official Demo’s must be approved by the Seneschal before being sent to any mundane publications. B. Webminister: Lord Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire – The web site is up to date. There are still a few minor areas that need additional information and I will be working to finalize those as well. Unevent Report: Master Chris Cunning lead the session as we were informed that Master Talorgen will be stepping down due to RL and personal issues. Also Master Cunning informed us that the King requested that he lead a team of staff to correct the Kingdom issues of multiple databases and old out dated sites. The position of Kingdom Web-minister will be advertised for a replacement for Master Talorgen in the near future. There will be a new Social media policy with new rules coming from the Kingdom Seneschal about how we use and administer social media sites for SCA business. Direction discussed today was that no social media site should be owned / administered by "private" parties and parties that have not been approved and appointed by the local group’s officers. Also a reminder was presented that if you are posting on social media as an "officer" of our Kingdom or local group, you have a responsibility to the Kingdom to conduct yourself with the proper tact and not use derogatory or inflammatory wording against the crown or any group within our Kingdom that is a direct

Page 5: January 2015 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/.../08/January2015.pdf · 1/8/2014  · The newsletter is full again this month. Lady Deirdre provided an

violation of Kingdom law. Also it was discussed that no "official" business is to be discussed or disseminated on Social media sites. Those communications need to stay private on official email channels for the local group. There have been recent issues with web-ministers who are missing in action or quitting but not passing along account information for the local group’s site. With this discussion, we agreed we would create accounts for the Seneschal and Baron / Baroness in our local groups so they have access in an emergency. This will be done for security reasons and there can be accountability if others were to log into the site and send a message or make changes. I will be creating these accounts within the next week or two and sending the information to our Seneschal and B&B to comply. The Kingdom website and OP will be the first to be addressed as to change their appearance and performance and bring them up to modern standards. Also databases will be combined and optimized to use identifiers for each SCA member so those can be linked to other areas within the Kingdom without having to have multiple databases as we currently do. An idea would be to use membership numbers as an index but this is still being worked.

C. Herald: Lady Deirdre O'Bardon – We had at least 5 local heralds attend Unevent. Baroness Wynne, Lady Alexandria and Lady Beatrice are handling kingdom level heraldry offices while still working on local heraldry. Lady Alexandria is also working on the Baronial OP and submissions. Lady Beatrice and Lady Sabine have commented on proposed names and devices. Baroness Wynne ran the consult table at Unevent and was assisted by Lady Katarzyna.

The following is the report of the Heralds’ Meeting at Unevent as recorded by Lady Serafina, the current Golden Dolphin:

Heralds’ Meeting Sign the roster or you’re not here. You don’t have to run faster, just faster than the person beside you. If you are interested in court, see silver nautilus herald [email protected] –Lady Alexandria Wright If interested in court, ask to 2nd a court with an experienced herald Look at scrolls before court if you are the court herald I have a friend in court to take notes of the docket as court goes on. Cindel is Atlantia’s Silent Herald Silent Heralds are Heralds If a silent Herald asks to see court Docket, let them see it We need more people to do court You do not have to do it all If you have a tabard, take it to the event just in case you need it for royal court to be a herald Hrothny will come to your area to have a herald’s workshop (she needs crash space) Need field heralds for events, especially crown tournament Wiki, tourist sites are not good documentation for names If you can’t find documentation, ask for help Nov 15 at this site, there will be a herald & scribe workshop We are one of the college of Heralds in the known world Cian wants to make a herald’s handbook. He wants to strengthen voice and court heraldry. Step outside the box, step outside your comfort zone Trying to get roster updated Working on updating website Make a library of ceremonies so people can use for reference to write ceremonies.

Addendum: I have joined the Northern Atlantian Commentary Group for online research and discussion.

E. MOAS: Lady Reyne Telerius Lady Katarzyna Witkowska - I taught the following classes at Kingdom University: Target Archery Basics; Target Archery for Children; Target Archery for Adults; The Cinderella Tale

Page 6: January 2015 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/.../08/January2015.pdf · 1/8/2014  · The newsletter is full again this month. Lady Deirdre provided an

Across Cultures and Time; Poland: The Development of Its Language and Literature. I also taught The Cinderella Tale . . . at WOW. I held a competition for children at Coronation on drawing a picture, writing a story or poem, about what it means to be King and/or Queen. I had 12 children enter. I did the same at WOW and 24 children submitted drawings and poems. MoAS Unevent Report: The meeting was run by the Kingdom MoAS, Mistress Branwen Wallis. I arrived a little late to the meeting, and am a terrible note taker, so I am providing the notes she submitted to the MoAS list. Thank you to all who came out to Unevent on Saturday and to all who brought in warrant paperwork! We had 23 people attending (which was just as well as we were in a very tiny room) and an excellent meeting with lots of discussion and information shared. There was also a very successful Performing Arts meeting that I was unable to attend due to the Great Officer of State meeting, but Lady Sophia has promised to post about that once she has recovered from her week of travels. The first thing that I would like bring up is the announcements. There are lots of things happening in the A&S community, including: Storvik Song and Dance - This event with take place on 24 January, and they are still looking for performers! Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival - This event will take place on 7 March and includes a large display and many competitions. There will also be some classes taught. The website for the event is http://kasf.atlantia.sca.org. Searching for a new Editor of the Oak - The Oak is Atlantia's online A&S publication. We need a new editor and will soon be putting out a call for resumes. Go to oak.atlantia.sca.org to view previous issues. Need University bids - Chancellor of the University, Lady Lisette, is asking everyone to, please, consider putting in a bid for a future University. This is, actually, an easy event to run and is always popular. Contact Lady Lisette at [email protected] for more information or if you have questions. A&S 50 Challenge - This is a challenge being conducted in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the SCA. It can be done in a number of ways and is a great learning opportunity. See artsandsciences50.org for more information. In part 2 of my notes from Unevent, I want to talk about some of the stuff that goes on at Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival (KASF). The main event is the Open A&S Display. This is where people from all over the Kingdom come to show off their stuff and is a great way to get comments and constructive criticism as well as meet other artisans and see what they're doing. Classes will be held throughout the day. Contact the event steward if you would like to teach something. Multiple competitions will, also, be going on, including several that happen every year, such as: Persona Pentathlon - This competition is sponsored by the Order of the Laurel and requires entrants to submit 5 separate entries all relating to one persona. See moas.atlantia.sca.org/forms.htm for details. NOTE: The date (7 Feb) that is listed on this page is incorrect. The correct date is 7 Mar. Persona Triathlon - This is the Youth version of the pentathlon, also sponsored by the Order of the Laurel for children 17 years old and younger. Only 3 entries are required, all relating to one persona.

Royal Baker - Their Majesties will be choosing a new Royal Baker to serve Them for the next year. This is a Kingdom Notable position. Royal Brewer - This is also a Kingdom Notable position that lasts for one year. Baronial Champions Competition - Each Barony sends its chosen artisan to compete for Baronial Bragging Rights. Gyrth Oldcastle Memorial Smackdown - Like a wrestling match, but with poetry, this is a really fun competition. Details for these and other competitions can be found on the KASF website: kasf.atlantia.sca.org. IMPORTANT NOTE: While the site has a policy prohibiting outside food and drink, this does NOT apply to displays and competitions. The Royal Baker/Royal Brewer competitions will take place, and you may still display your food and drink arts in the Open Display or compete with them in other competitions. So, spread the word! Let's make this the biggest KASF yet! Your servant, Branwen Wallis, KMoAS

We discussed the idea of placing up for auction at Birthday all the items left behind (that no one has claimed) from this last years kitchen efforts. The idea was hailed as brilliant and we will be doing this. Trial By Fire- We're thinking the 4th week of June. We're thinking of asking Yseulte to autocrat again and having at the Bowman possibly in conjunction with the Lochmere Arrow. We're thinking. The Bake Sale at Steppingstones' Victorian Holiday Faire- The Almond Tarts were very popular as well as the hot beverages. We grossed $178 before reimbursements. Lady Faye was most appreciative of our participation and has said that next year the Museum will be having the Faire on Friday and Saturday instead of Saturday and Sunday. New Site Search- There was a discussion about all the new Fire Houses that have been built in the Bright Hills area. Various folks will be checking these places out to see if they are suitable (and amenable) for SCA events. Baroness Wynne will be replacing me as the next Cooks Guild Mistress as of the March Meeting. Thank you for the honored privilege of having been able to serve you these past years. I know that she will do a wonderful job! The Wooden Cleaver of Authority and all the various Guild Accoutrement will be transferred to her with all due pomp and circumstance! Warm Holiday Wishes from my house to yours! Stay festive and enjoy the season. Respectfully, Rowan 6. Herb Group: No report

F. Knight’s Marshall: Lord Janyn Fletcher of Lancastreschire - I have turned over the office of the Knights Marshal to Lord Randver as of this report. With my selection to Principal of the Order of the Golden Dolphin, I felt it was the right thing to do. I enjoyed serving the Barony in this role and I know Lord Randver will do an excellent job!

G. Minister of Lists: Lord Alexander Fowler - I would like to thank my deputy Lady Livia di Samuele for attending Unevent for me. No other Mol news for December.

H. Youth Minister: Baroness Wynne ferch Rhodri ap Hwyell – It has been slow here in Bright Hills except for Coronation. As I was Head Cook, I was ably helped by Lady Scholastica, who assisted in the making of seahorses, reading and poetry by Lady Katarzyna, and a Tea Party, led by Countess Lynette. There were 8 children for the craft. parents were wonderfully helpful.

Unfortunately, I do not know the names of any other helpers. The poetry was a hit with Her Majesty and Lady Kat had plans to gather more from the children of Atlantia..

The "Lounge" area used during Battle on the Bay was a great idea. I'd like to provide something like that at one of our Baronial events in the future. In fact, perhaps something like that could be a traveling activity...hmmmmmm...must think some more on that..

I. Chatelaine: Baroness Barbara Giumaria diRoberto - Duchess Kalissa opened the meeting and asked her deputy to start.

Lady(?)Rhonwen is developing a library of classes.

Already available are Chatelain 101 and 102, How to organize a demo, How to organize a Gold Key, It's your first time in court, and Symbols and etiquette for newcomers

Suggested classes to be developed are How to retain new members, How to recruit mentors, Chatelain for marshals,

A southern chatelaine offered her "SCAdian guide for the mundane eye" She takes newcomers on a field trip to local sites to check out possible SCA gear, e.g. Walmart, thrift stores, fabric and craft stores.

Another suggestion is to walk the event with newcomers, the entire event, archery field, fencing, A&S and introduce them to the marshal and participants.

Discussions covered, how we teach current members to encourage and not criticize newcomers. Dealing with "snowflakes", those people who require lots of attention. Developing a core of mentors, who can buddy up at events. Respecting the experiences of transfers. Connecting with local colleges. Accepting and supporting folks who want a non white European persona.

NEED-The Kingdom Chatelain is in need of a northern and southern regional deputy, mostly to handle paperwork. However, the deputy will be an officer of state and unable to hold a local office.

POLICY revisions-all deputies MUST be warranted

No one is a chatelaine UNTIL warrant is acknowledged

Using social media in a negative way is grounds for revocation of warrant

the Atlantian server is not always dependable, please send copy of report to Duchess Kalissa's email

The handbook is in the process of being revised.

Printed media, including local group handouts must be approved by the Kingdom Seneschal. The Society is trying to standardize the information being passed around.

Likewise, when contacted by the press, make sure to contact the Kingdom Media Relations Deputy

Local Seneschal MUST sign off on demos. Marshall activities require an attending marshal and waivers. A MoL is NOT required.

J. Thrown Weapons Marshal: Lady Beatrice Shirwod - The meeting was run by Dame Dealla Cohen, Deputy Earl Marshal for Thrown Weapons in Atlantia. Sir Otto von Schwartzkatz, the Kingdom's Earl Marshal, was also in attendance throughout the meeting.

Among the topics discussed were ways to get people more interested in thrown weapons, and how to grow our numbers. Because thrown weapons doesn't require a lot of space(we measure our ranges in feet, rather than yards), thrown weapons ranges can be set up in a more central location than can archery. Having a range more visible at events can increase the number of people exposed to the activity, and generate interest. The novelty and kinetic targets Baron Kryss set up at Holiday Faire were well-received, and generated a great deal of interest; there will be further discussion of how to set up these sorts of targets so that more events can have them. Another recommendation was to offer beginner classes at events, for those who are new to throwing and/or to the SCA, closing down the range for a bit so that newcomers can receive instruction and perhaps discover a fun and exciting activity to keep them coming back. Night throws were also suggested to include at events where possible, as there are some who would travel to an event that hosted such a throw when they might not otherwise make the drive.

Page 10: January 2015 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/.../08/January2015.pdf · 1/8/2014  · The newsletter is full again this month. Lady Deirdre provided an

A safety issue was brought up regarding throwing "cards"--thrown weapons which look like playing cards but are functionally similar to throwing stars or shuriken. These have been found repeatedly to have cracks in them after some use, and marshals were warned to check carefully for this.

Sir Otto asked that all marshals include notes in their reports after an event any time they have to bring up an issue with a thrower (unsafe techniques, moving around on the range before the all clear is given, etc), as well as more serious issues. This way, patterns can be tracked, and issues can hopefully be addressed before they get to be serious problems.

Dame Dealla mentioned that she had been approached about working out rules and logistics for equestrian thrown weapons, following the popularity of equestrian archery in the south. Several suggestions were made, and some safety concerns were raised. This will be an ongoing topic of discussion for the throwing marshals.

The topic of TW Royal Rounds, scores, and possible ranks was brought up. The format for the thrown royal round is already in place for Atlantia, and several other Kingdoms already use ranks similar to those used by the archery communities. Among other things, keeping scores is useful for situations such as the Champions' Tourney at Pennsic, where we were asked to present our Kingdom's best and brightest to compete. Scores and rankings could also help in terms of people seeing TW as more legitimate, rather than peripheral. This, too, will be discussed more among the marshals in the coming months.

There will be a Thrown Weapons MIT class held at Winter University, and possibly some other offerings as well. Anyone with an interest is encouraged to attend.

K. Target Archery Marshal: Lord Janyn Lord Janyn kicked off the meeting by thanking all marshals and archers for another great year of archery in our Kingdom. There were no reported accidents or injuries and he reiterated that we need to continue to be vigilant about safety and enforcing our rules to assure archers are being safe. Lord Janyn also discussed with the Teaching marshals that they need to assure they are using the correct sign in forms for MiTs and that ALL required information on that form is collected. There were 31 MiTs this year that could not be entered into the system because he did not have the correct information to enter into the system. In the end it is the MiT that doesn't get supported because of the Teacher's mistake. Lord Janyn also mentioned that this year at Pennsic will be our 5th consecutive year for the St. Sebastian's shoot and we need to make it the best yet with Atlantia's best novelty targets and all of the marshal help we can get to support this iconic shoot. A reminder was presented to the group that MiT's are NOT allowed to be alone on the line unsupervised by a warranted marshal. This also applies if a non marshal experienced archer is asked to assist, they need to be supervised by a warranted marshal at all times. Lastly, Janyn and Lord Seamus held a discussion with the marshals and archers about how we can keep the fun in archery and how we can assure that archers are not setting precedence with new comers about our elite archers or a specific class of archer. We wanted to openly discuss cross bow vs. hand bows and all of the misconceptions we have heard over this past year at various events. We are not looking to handicap archers and that is not the way to handle this, rather we encouraged the MIC's and shoot creators to think a bit more about making their shoot and scoring more geared for fun for all and possibly inducing more challenge for the top ranked archers with still allowing the newer archers to feel satisfied with their scores.

IV. Old Business

A. Baronial Birthday: Rebekkah sent a report in online.

Baronial Birthday report: Lady Nichola and the Archers will be preparing and serving lunch. Mistress Jeanne has offered to be our Royal Liaison, and I have accepted her offer. I would like to know if I can send an invite to East and Aethelmarc, possibly resulting in more feast seats. Perhaps we can request numbers for feast to know if we need to increase the budget. I will ask my deputy, Livi, if she will be there, but feel free to debate in my absence. In Service, Rebekkah

Bright Hills Baronial Birthday

February 14, 2015

Barony of Bright Hills

In the month of Adar, the evil Haman, uncle to the Persian King Ahasuerus, planned to have all Jews in the kingdom murdered. Esther, wife of the Persian king, risked her life to save her people by revealing herself as a Jew. Haman and his son were arrested and executed. Esther’s courageous act gave rise to a new festival – Purim. Come celebrate Purim with the Barony of Bright Hills! The tradition of Purim is to wear costumes. As Purim has been celebrated across the centuries, garb and costume from any century within the SCA time period is allowed. If you wish, add some “bling” to your traditional garb: spangles, ribbons, bows, bells, and anything else that makes it silly! Purim is also the only Jewish holiday when men and women can dress as one another… Martial Activities: As Weather Allows. Marshall-in-Charge: Lord Randver Askmadr (Randy Feltman) Arts & Sciences Activities: As is tradition, the story of Esther will be told. Our guests are encouraged to become part of the tale by providing sound effects: boos and graggers (noisemakers) when Haman’s name is mentioned, cheers for Esther’s. 2. Costume Contest: Most Outrageous Bling. Bling up your garb with the flashiest stuff you can find! 3. Passion Plays about Purim: Performers are encouraged to develop and perform passion plays about the events and customs related to Purim. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purim 4. Noisemaker Decorating Contest: Children can decorate a gragger (noisemaker) 5.Baronial A & S Champion: Going with the Purim theme, the theme of the A&S competition is "pretending" as Esther "pretended" to not be Jewish in order to become Ahasuerus' wife: a) Something that could be used to pretend to be another thing (ie a costume or mask); b) Something pretending to be something else (ie, like Lady Deidre's tree subtlety made of food). 6.Baronial Brewing Champion: The competition for the Baronial Brewer for Bright Hills will be held at the Baronial Birthday celebration. All entries are welcome, be they of alcoholic variety or non. Each entry will be judged on its own merits. Presentation and documentation will play a small part in the judging. Entries should be presented at the table by 11 of the clock at the hall. Cost: Adult, Member: $8.00 Day-Trip $10.00 Feast $0.00 Camping Adult, Non-Member: $13.00 Day-Trip $10.00 Feast $0.00 Camping Youth (6-17): $5.00 Day-Trip $10.00 Feast $0.00 Camping Child (0-5): $0.00 Day-Trip $0.00 Feast $0.00 Camping

The Jewish Holiday of Purim By THL Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield

On the fourteenth and fifteenth of the month of Adar is the holiday of Purim. Purim commemorates the victory of the Jews over the evil Haman, during the time of Xerses II of Persia. It is referred to as the holiday of freedom, because Haman wanted to destroy the entire Jewish nation and his plan was thwarted by a miracle. It is customary on this holiday to read the "Megilat Esther-The Book of Esther", which recounts the story of the holiday. After reading the Megila, Jews hold a "Se'udah"-festive meal and exchange Mishloakh Manot (Hebrew for "sending portions")-presents of food. Other customs include giving money to the poor, collecting funds so that poor people will

have matzah on Passover, and having a "Purimshpiel" (humorous theatrical presentation of the story of Purim followed by a discussion). It is also a custom to get so drunk that "one cannot tell the difference between Haman and Queen Esther." For those who don't know the story of Purim, I will be brief. Persia was an Empire that existed between the Babylonian Empire and the time of Alexander the Great. Cyrus the Great was one of the Persia’s greatest emperors. His daughter Vashti married a commoner-Ahashvarosh. This commoner was later known as Xerxes II or Artaxerxes II. Xerxes was a drunkard and a weak king. He was easily swayed to behead Vashti, when she refused his order to dance naked in front of the court at a party. Once he realized what he had done, Xerxes had all the virgin maidens in his empire brought to his palace to become part of his harem. One of these maidens was a Jew by the name of Hadassah. The king fell in love with her and made her his queen. Hadassah’s name was known as Asturya in Persian or Esther in Hebrew, a word which means “hidden.” Esther had to hide the fact that she was an observant Jew because the Jews in Persia were not well liked. Now, there was an ambitious person in the Persian court by the name of Haman. Haman convinced the king to make him Prime Minister and give a decree that all should bow to him. The Jews refused to obey this order and Haman plotted their destruction. Word of his plans became known to Esther's uncle-Mordehai, who told her of the plot. Esther risked her life to expose Haman's plan and save her people. Many of the foods eaten on Purim symbolize the meaning of Esther’s name – “hidden.” It is customary to eat stuffed vegetables, meat, and dough in both Ashkenazic and Sephardic countries. Many of the names for the foods eaten remind us the villain Haman. We eat foods that supposed look like his eyes, ears or hair. The most popular cookie eaten on Purim by Ashkenazi Jews is called Hamantashen which means Haman’s Hat. It is also customary to eat chickpeas, various sorts of beans and nuts and poppy seeds to remind us of what Esther ate in the palace because she didn’t have access to kosher food.

There are many delicious treats that are customary in Sephardic countries, for this holiday. Our Mishloakh Manot are presented on a beautifully decorated, fish-shaped plate. (The fish is the symbol of the month of Adar-the month when Purim takes place.) On this plate you will find Malboof, which are rolled puff pastries filled with nuts, Masafan, which are star-shaped macaroons, Orejas de Haman-Haman's Ears, which are fried pastries, Huevos de Haman, which are hard-cooked eggs that have been baked inside a pastry basket; and Sambusak-Chick pea or cheese filled dumplings. Ashkenazic Jews have a custom of serving Hamantaschen-Haman's hats, which are triangular pastries filled with a mixture of honey and poppy seeds. Other traditional Ashkenazi foods include Kreplach which are similar to Sambusak and filled with meat, Lekach-honey cake. Beigli-yeast pastry filled with poppy seeds, and poppy seed cakes or cookies.

The Poets’ Corner

A Sampling of Italian Poetic Forms By Lady Deirdre O’Bardon, Poeta Atlantiae In honor of Atlantian Twelfth Night, which occurs in Venice this year, I researched some of the Italian forms that were used in fifteenth century Italy. These poetic forms include the ottava rima, terza rima, canzone, sestina and ballata. Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) was first major poet to use the ottava rime for serious narrative verse. The ottava rime consists of eight lines of eleven syllables each. The rhyme scheme could be abababab, abababcc, ababcccc or ababccdd. Although the ottava rime was used in the fourteenth century, it continued to be used throughout Italy until at least the seventeenth century. The terza rime is an Italian form pioneered by Dante (c. 1265–c. 1320) and was used in the Divine Comedy. Other major Italian poets who used the form include Petrarch (1304-1374) and Bocacio, although the form continued to be used during the fifteenth century. The Italian form has eight syllables per line. There can be any number of three line verses with the rhyme scheme aba bcb cdc ded. However, the terza rime ends with a single line that rhymes with the second line of the stanza preceeding it. For example, if the last stanza rhymes efe, the terza rime would end efe f. The canzone covers a number of different poetic forms, all related to songs. These include the canzone a ballo (also called ballata), frottola, barzeletta, canto carnascialesco, lauda cacra and cansone petrarchesca. Although Petrarch wrote primarily in Latin, he also composed Italian canzone. Dante described the poetics of a canzone without distinguishing the Italian form from the canso of Provencal. The canzone form and its variations continued to be used for centuries. The canzone petrarchesca is divided into several equal stanzas and usually concludes with a shorter stanza. The shorter stanza is called ripresa, comgedo or comiato, or more generally the envoy signifying the end. The stanzas within a Petrarchan canzone are divided into 3 sections; two equal sections called piedi and one unequal part called the sirima or

Page 20: January 2015 Yeoman - Barony of Bright Hillsbrighthills.atlantia.sca.org/.../08/January2015.pdf · 1/8/2014  · The newsletter is full again this month. Lady Deirdre provided an

20

cauda. The number of lines per stanza varies from seven to twenty while the envoy may have between three and ten lines. The lines within the stanzas may be of 11 and 7 syllables, and the rhymes within the stanzas are uniform. If you use a canzone, you will need to document the rhyme scheme. The ballata or canzone a ballo is a lyric genre of Italian poetry. The ballata has an indeterminant number of stanzas, each of which is followed by a refrain. The stanzas may be divided into mutazioni (variations) or piedi (feet) and volta (turn). The mutazioni have the same meter and number of lines. The volta has the same number of lines and rhyme as the refrain, which is usually one to five lines long. The last line of the refrain and the last line of the volta rhyme while the last line of the mutazioni rhymes with the first line of the refrain. One rhyme scheme is xy yx /ab ab bc cx yx / de de ef fx xy yx / etc. The lines themselves may have a mixture of seven and eleven syllables or may have eleven, seven or eight syllables. This form should not be confused with the later ballata romantica. The sestina is considered to be the most complicated of the verse forms created by the troubadours. A sestina has six stanzas of six lines each, followed by a stanza of three lines. According to the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, Italian sestinas have 11 syllables. However, you may be able to document exceptions to the rule. Usually, the lines in a sestina are not rhymed. Instead, there is a recurrent pattern of end words. Each stanza has six end words which are used throughout the poem. The first stanza’s end words are represented by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. In each succeeding stanza the end words in the preceding stanza are reverse paired. Thus in the second stanza the end words would be [6- 1] [5- 2] and [4- 3]. So the rhyming words in the second stanza would be 6, 1, 5, 2, 4, 3. The pattern for the end words throughout the sestina would be: Stanza One 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 Stanza Two 6, 1, 5, 2, 4, 3 Stanza Three 3, 6, 4, 1, 2, 5 Stanza Four 5, 3, 2, 6, 1, 4 Stanza Five 4, 5, 1, 3, 6, 2 Stanza Six 2, 4, 6, 5, 3, 1 The end word pattern in the envoi or tornada may be either 1, 3, 5 or 5, 3, 1. Many, perhaps most, sestinas also include the words represented by 2, 4 and 6 within the 3 lines to draw the poem together. Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of the Italian poetic forms. I would love to see any forms that you document. Bibliography Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, ed. A. Preminger and T.V.F. Brogan © 1993 by Princeton University Press. William

Lord Randver askmadr

St. Anthony was waiting at the pearly gates one day for William, an old friend. When his old friend arrived St. Anthony asked him how he was doing. William replied that he was doing a lot better now. He no longer had the aches and pains he had on Earth. He could run across the fields as fast as the wind. St. Anthony asked his old friend if he had any regrets. William said he had only one regret, that he had to leave his master. Why do you feel that way, didn’t your master have you put to sleep? William said that yes his master had had him put to sleep, but his master was kind and did everything he could before having him put to sleep. “You see I just couldn’t do the things I used to do,” William said. My master saw this and sent me here where I can be young again. I wish my master would find a new friend, one that could do the things I could not. St. Anthony said he would see what he could do. Some time went by and one day William was thinking about Alain, his old master. So he found St. Anthony and asked if Alain had found a new friend. St. Anthony said that Alain had indeed found a new friend and that they were at this moment riding in the games William so often talked about. William asked to be able to see and St. Anthony waved his hands and the clouds parted. William looked and there was Alain mounted on a yellow horse riding and laughing. William got a tear in his eye and said to St. Anthony, “That is what I tried to do for him, but I was too old” St Anthony waved his hands and the clouds began to close, but just before the clouds closed William said, “Ride on master, ride on.”

Directions Dough: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. To make the filling: Puree the filling ingredients in a food processor until evenly combined, about 1 to 2 minutes. Remove and set aside. Clean the processor bowl. Put the flour, baking powder, the 1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar, and salt in the bowl of food processor and pulse 3 to 4 times to mix. Add the butter, oil, and milk pulsing until the dough just comes together. Take care not to overwork the dough; it will be slightly wet. Remove dough from the processor, and roll into 20 equally sized balls. In the palm of your hand, press and pat each ball of dough into a 2 3/4-inch round. Place a rounded teaspoon of filling in the center of each round and draw the edges up and around the filling. Pinch the dough together to make a sealed ball, and then carefully roll the cookie between your palms to make a smooth round ball. Press gently to flatten the cookie slightly, then place them seamed side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling. Gently prick the cookies with a fork or a wooden skewer in a decorative pattern taking care not to pierce the dough to the filling. Bake the cookies until firm and slightly puffed, and the tops are pale but the bottoms are just beginning to turn slightly golden, about 25 to 30 minutes. Dust generously with confectioners’ sugar, cool and dust again. Apricot Golden Raisin Nut Filling: Puree in a food processor until evenly combined. Quince-Walnut Filling: Puree in a food processor until evenly combined.
