Purpose of the Sport Equipment and Competition Uniform GuidelinesThe TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee (TO2015), in collaboration with the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), is pleased to introduce the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games Sport Equipment and Competition Uniform Guidelines for National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International/Continental Sport Federations (IFs/CFs).

The purpose of these guidelines is to clarify the use of commercial trademarks by using visual diagrams to illustrate the regulations, in an effort to make it as clear as possible how each manufacturer’s identification may or may not be used in both general and specific situations.

These guidelines contain the general rules to be followed regarding manufacturer’s trademarks for the following categories: equipment, clothing, accessories and footwear for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games.

Because TO2015 places great importance on the national identity of all athletes and respects the important contributions made by sporting goods manufacturers and sponsors, these guidelines are not intended to restrict or impair new, innovative technological design features of clothing, equipment and accessories, but to ensure they conform with the rules and regulations applicable to each sport as set out in these guidelines.

These guidelines apply equally to all persons participating in the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am Games.

Manufacturer’s TrademarksManufacturer’s trademarks are defined as the standard recognition of the name, logo or any other element, graphic or otherwise, which identifies the manufacturer of any item of clothing, including but not limited to training and competition uniforms, headwear, footwear, accessories and sport equipment worn by athletes, team officials and IF/CF officials.

SPORT EQUIPMENT AND COMPETITION UNIFORM GUIDELINES

General Conditions for the Presence of Manufacturer’s Trademarks• Only one manufacturer’s trademark is permitted per item, as noted in the specific size dimensions

outlined in these guidelines.

• No name, logo, corporate element or colour scheme (including those belonging to NOCs, IFs/CFs, individual athlete sponsors or others) may appear on any item of clothing, accessories or sport equipment.

• Manufacturer’s trademarks for non-sport products are prohibited from appearing on clothing, accessories or equipment. For example, headphones worn during a warm-up practice or at press conferences.

• Accessories are not permitted to be used for commercial purposes.

• Manufacturer’s trademarks appearing on the athlete’s body, such as tattoos, are prohibited.

• Manufacturer’s trademarks on some products used by athletes, per the requirements of the competition, are not permitted. These products include contact lenses, ear plugs, mouthpieces, nose clips and water bottles.

√ XThe general conditions above are applicable to all items of clothing, accessories and sport equipment worn or used by all athletes, team officials, IF/CF officials, accredited staff and product manufacturers.

Size Dimensions for Manufacturer’s TrademarksManufacturer’s trademarks may only be shown to a maximum dimension of 60 cm2 on sport equipment (or a maximum of 10 per cent of the item), 20 cm2 on competition uniforms and 6 cm2 (or a maximum of 10 per cent of the item) on accessories.

A rectangle or square will be traced around the manufacturer’s name or logo, or combination of name and logo, to calculate the surface area of the manufacturer’s trademark. See examples below.

Applying Manufacturer’s Trademarks Competition uniformsThis category includes the different types of clothing worn during training and competition sessions, including those worn by IF/CF officials. Uniforms are subject to specific requirements respective to each IF.

In order to comply with the maximum dimensions of the trademark (20 cm2), items made of elastic fabrics such as Lycra or cotton should consider the manufacturer’s trademark as it will look when placed on the athlete’s body. For example, how stretched the trademark will be when worn.
