Editor’s Note

Dear ACCESS Colleagues,

Welcome to a brand new year full of hopes and aspirations. One of my favourite activities this time of the year is compiling a list of everything I must achieve. No doubt many of us enjoy setting goals and the challenge of meeting them. Learning a new language, losing weight, socializing more, travelling more – doing some volunteer work? On top of this, many of us who are still trying to get used to the rhythm of a new life in a new country may find the barrage of self-imposed expectations demanding.

Perhaps it is time to adopt a new mantra. One that emphasizes tranquillity in our

thoughts and actions. When we find life overwhelming, it is often from a lack of headspace. In the confusion that swirls around us, we feel over-busy, over-tired and over-stressed. My challenge to myself and to you this year – let’s try to find a space in our minds that allows tranquillity to invade.

Wishing you all year of happiness and desires fulfilled!

À votre santé et bonheur,

Sujin Chan-Allen

Letter from the Executive Director

We all do it, set goals for the New Year. Some easier to achieve than others, some revived from previous years and some, completely new! Looking back on the past two years and what ACCESS has been able to achieve, and where we are today, led me to reflect in the last few months: Are we still ‘serving the international community’? Are there other things we should be doing? Or not doing any more? Who are we serving? Can we ‘serve’ other needs of the international community such as HR departments or government instances in order to serve individuals better?

While there is still a strong relation between what we do today, and what ACCESS was set up to do, there have also been transformations over the years – reflecting not only the needs of the community itself, but also the make-up of our own volunteers and new challenges emerging. With this in mind I have summarised some of my, and ACCESS’s goals & points of reflection for 2014 as follow: 1. Develop a ‘product for HR departments’ – the Strat Dev project which Zoe is assisting us with is part of this, as is the exploratory content project on global mobility for which Babita is providing input. Linked to this, perhaps there is interesting data and information VRD and Neha are suggesting we start gathering with a new HR tool. Could these initiatives lead us towards new ideas? 2. Recruit alliances with Relocators – seems there is a ‘history’ of misunderstanding between us: they (globally speaking) consider ACCESS a competitive threat: I would like to convince, show that we are actually their competitive advantage – if they would consider us so. How can we implement such an alliance? 3. Projects – I believe we should only take on projects that contribute to our funding (which is why we take on projects as well) which answer the question: does this serve the international community? AND measure the investment of time/skills/effort of local and national projects: i.e. what is % of time/skill investment for local initiatives and does this add to or detract from our goal to be a national organisation? In so doing I believe we can also respect, value and recognise the skills and talents of our volunteers in the best possible manner. 4. Data collection – as we professionalise our ‘systems’ we continue to improve on our stats: on topics & traffic. Can we use this data more effectively? Develop, when ready, related marketing tools of this information (illustrated info graphs) or as input to policy/market related questions. 5. Targeting Social Media – so far we have been really, really good at ‘pushing’/sharing information – I would like to work towards improving our ‘active contribution’ in social media i.e. FB helpdesk (in addition to phone/email/face- at THIC) and a more responsive character on FB & Twitter as I believe this would build on the significant efforts made by Matt over the last two years! Perhaps you have answers or input to some of the reflections above. If so, I would love to hear them. For now though, I wish us all not only a Happy New Year, but one which fulfils and enriches us – personally as well as professionally. Sincerely,

Deborah Valentine Executive Director

Letter from the Office Manager

By Qin Cai

Hello again, ACCESS

It is my fortune and honour to be asked by Deborah and the

Board to come back and work as Office Manager at ACCESS as from 16th December 2013, I am most grateful for this opportunity.

First of all, I would like to thank Carina from the bottom of my heart for her remarkable work as Office Manager in my absence, I have heard much positive feedback of admiration and appreciation from fellow volunteers for her energy and professionalism. The transition would not have been such a smooth path without Carina’s devotion, intelligence and creativity. Thank you Carina!

For the past three months, apart from dealing with UWV and some job hunting activities, I have had the time to be more connected with my two teenage children by having tea with them after their school days and follow up with their daily activities at school and outside school gates, a visit to my mother in southern China, various trips to visit my fellow volunteer friends in different cities, meeting friends from my network outside ACCESS, some pursuits in things I enjoy doing like going to theatres, concerts, museums and reading. I have also had the chance to reflect on my time with ACCESS since September 2010.

It has been three years for me to be with ACCESS, first working as a volunteer at

Helpdesk, then at THIC, followed on by taking on the positions as THD trainer, Training Coordinator and THD Co-manager, for the past two years I worked as Office Manager. During this time ACCESS has evolved and developed much. It has become more active and visible within the international community and on social media platforms, we work closely with more municipalities and partners/associates/sponsors. Our volunteers are younger, but with higher educational qualifications and more diverse professional experiences, as a result of this, we invest more time and energy in training new volunteers who join us and then follow up with their work to ensure that the services we provide are of good quality, consistent and professional. Our organisation is better structured now, each department has a clear vision on what their responsibilities and tasks are, we are more communicative among all departments, plans and goals are more transparent between the management and individual volunteers. Additionally, we strive to give volunteers a lot of room for creativity, inspiration and self-initiative. Sometimes it is hard to believe that we are a volunteer organisation, far from the stereotype of a group of elderly people who get together weekly for a cup of tea or coffee to chat... well... we do still do that as well in the office, sometimes too loudly with our jokes and laughter much to the dismay of our neighbouring organisations on the same floor ;-) However, most of the time our volunteers work hard and produce amazing results on this unique platform called ACCESS. We have pride in the work we do and it is this undeniable positive and creative ambience in the office which attracts many volunteers to stay with us for a long time. We help and support each other which makes us feel at home, in due time we develop and progress.

Page 7: January 2014 newsletter

7 ACCESS for & by volunteers January 2014

For 2014, we have some exciting projects in the pipeline, we will need the continued help and support from all and each of our volunteers to accomplish our goals, I will continue my duty to be the point of contact for whatever it is. I will continue to do my best to help and support you all, for the work we believe in and, for all the fun we enjoy sharing. Let us be together and make a difference in 2014!

Love Messages in Vermeer’s Paintings A large part of the paintings of Johannes Vermeer is dedicated to richly dressed women standing in a beautiful interior. What we don’t realise is that many of these paintings are about love. Vermeer was – as were many of his contemporaries - inspired by emblem books. In these books we see illustrated proverbs and sayings, all with a moralist message. Since we are no longer familiar with these sayings neither with their meaning, it is often suggested that there is a hidden meaning in these paintings of the Dutch Golden Age. During the lecture we explore themes such as ‘Romantic Love’ and ‘Paid Love’ to reveal the hidden meaning of the paintings of Johannes Vermeer.
